A New Theory Of The Spalling Of Fireclay Products With Relation To Thermal Expansion, Robert Legrande Stone
A New Theory Of The Spalling Of Fireclay Products With Relation To Thermal Expansion, Robert Legrande Stone
Bachelors Theses
"There is one factor that is responsible for much of the failure of refractories in furnaces and other metallurgical processes and boilers, namely spalling. Many times this action has been the cause of roofs to cave in, side walls to slump, and bungs to fail. Consequently it is a factor that is of utmost importance. The erosion and slag effects are also of greatest importance to refractory stability. Spalling, as referred to refractories, is defined as the breaking or crushing of the unit due to thermal, mechanical, or structural stresses, presenting newly exposed surfaces of the residual mass. Taking the …
The Photobromination Of Azobenzene, Oden Cass Garst
The Photobromination Of Azobenzene, Oden Cass Garst
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this thesis is to make a study of the photobromination of azobenzene. The effect of various variables has been studied. The factors considered were, temperature, frequency of light, and concentration. Information on photobrominations is of great scientific importance, as it opens up a comparatively new field of research, and also contributes further data which helps to establish the quantum theory, if indeed this theory is still in controversy"--Introduction, page 3.
A Study Of The Effects Of Paraffin Wax Upon The Viscosities Of Lubricating Oils, Charles Leo William Hunze
A Study Of The Effects Of Paraffin Wax Upon The Viscosities Of Lubricating Oils, Charles Leo William Hunze
Masters Theses
"The determination of the mean molecular weight of oils and paraffin waxes may have significance as: (1) an important property from a purely research point of view; (2) a step towards structure determination; (3) a study of molecular association with viscosity, making possible the application of well established viscosity binary mixture formulas to oil blends and oil and paraffin wax blends; (4) an aid in the calculations of latent heats for refinery engineering purposes (see A.A. Ashworth's applications of this property); (5) a possible means for identifying bitumens of unknown origin, and determining the approximate proportion of each type in …
Fuller's Earth In Southeast Missouri, Willard Farrar
Fuller's Earth In Southeast Missouri, Willard Farrar
Professional Degree Theses
"Recent work, (1933-34) in southeastern Missouri by the Missouri Geological Survey has shown that deposits of bleaching clay occur in the Porters Creek formation of Tertiary age. Various localities in Scott and Stoddard counties are described, in which favorable conditions for development exist. The method of testing the clay for bleaching power is treated briefly. Suggestions are offered in regard to prospecting, mining and milling"--Abstract, page 5.
Cost Of Engineering On Highway Projects, Walter John Shaffer
Cost Of Engineering On Highway Projects, Walter John Shaffer
Professional Degree Theses
"It is customary for highway departments to set up certain finances in addition to the contract price to take care of engineering and slight overruns in the contract quantities. Generally a certain percentage of the contract price is used. The Missouri Highway Commission follow the practice of setting up 10% of the contract price to finance the engineering, contingencies, and slight overruns. The term "engineering" as referred to in this paper consists of the salaries and incidental expenses of the project engineer and his assistants, project office rent, and transportation. It will be noted that the preliminary survey work, blue …
Efficient Management Of Highway Projects Under State Administration, From The Point Of View Of The Project Or Resident Engineer, Jean Paul Bryan
Efficient Management Of Highway Projects Under State Administration, From The Point Of View Of The Project Or Resident Engineer, Jean Paul Bryan
Professional Degree Theses
"Efficiency in any project is an admirable attribute. It is even more than admirable in an undertaking designed for the spending of the taxpayer's money in which the lack of this trait is so liable to be interpretated [sic] as graft. It is necessary. After some eight years of connection with highway construction, a familiarity with inefficiency in the management of high projects under state construction is sufficient excuse, we believe, to warrant a dissertation of the opportunities for the practice of efficiency by those in direct charge of these project - the Project Engineers or the Resident Engineers, as …
Foundations For Aquatic Oil Wells, Henry Emmett Gross
Foundations For Aquatic Oil Wells, Henry Emmett Gross
Professional Degree Theses
"During the past decade, man has found the courage to drill for oil at those forbidding locations which were made inaccessible by several feet of water. Some of the major fields of the world have been developed by this new manner of work, and others might have been added had the stage been set for the play. The most spectacular marine oil field development occurred along the Santa Barbara Coast of California from 1929 to 1931. It was the writer's good fortune to have been an assistant to Mr. Hans E. A. Gude, the field engineer of Pacific Western Oil …

A Survey Of A Sanitary Sewer System With Findings And Recommendations, Warren Roy Gettler
Professional Degree Theses
"The object of the survey was: 1. To determine existing evils in the present system and make recommendations for their correction. 2. To create new sewer districts of the unsewered portions of the city and submit tenative [sic] estimates of quantities and costs"--page 2.
The Study And Solution Of A Corrosion Problem Induced By Air Conditioning, Frederick William Hoertel
The Study And Solution Of A Corrosion Problem Induced By Air Conditioning, Frederick William Hoertel
Professional Degree Theses
"A recent personal investigation conducted by the writer has disclosed the extremely interesting fact that almost every large air conditioning plant in operation in St. Louis is experiencing serious difficulty in operation due to corrosion of some component part. With the ever increasing number of installations of large air conditioning plants the problem of corrosion prevention is becoming one of major economic importance"--Introduction, page 7.
Problems In The Cement Industry, William Alonzo Mccanless
Problems In The Cement Industry, William Alonzo Mccanless
Professional Degree Theses
"The major problem of the cement companies is the matter of marketing the product in sufficient quantities and at a price which will return a profit; however, there are some other problems that are of great interest to the engineers, i.e., the interest in the economics of cement based largely on its effect on the cost of contemplated structures"--page 1.

A Comparison Of Florida, Georgia And G-1 Kaolin As The Chief Clay Ingredient For A Sanitary Ware Casting Body, George Armour Sellers
A Comparison Of Florida, Georgia And G-1 Kaolin As The Chief Clay Ingredient For A Sanitary Ware Casting Body, George Armour Sellers
Bachelors Theses
"The purpose of this investigation, originally, was to determine the suitability of substituting G-1 kaolin for Florida kaolin in a sanitary ware casting body. It was later extended to embrace a comparative study of Florida, Georgia and G-1 kaolin as the chief clay ingredient in a sanitary ware casting body"--Introduction, Purpose of the Investigation, page 1.
The Effects Of Sodium, Barium And Calcium Chloride Upon The Physical Properties Of A Whiteware Body, William Newton Coffman
The Effects Of Sodium, Barium And Calcium Chloride Upon The Physical Properties Of A Whiteware Body, William Newton Coffman
Bachelors Theses
"The wide spread use of American kaolins and ball clays has been frowned upon by the majority of white-ware manufactures because the product resulting from their use in most cases has a color which is inferior to ware produced from English raw materials. This inferior color is generally attributed to the presence of a small amount of iron in the American clays. If some inexpensive chemical addition could be made which would eliminate the iron stain or in some way mask it, a wider market could be found in the white-ware industry for the domestic clays. One way to eliminate …
