Enhanced Superconductivity And Vortex Dynamics In Quasi-1d Tas2 Nanowires, Mathew Pollard, Visakha Ho, Clarissa Wisner, Eric W. Bohannan, Yew San Hor
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
We report the synthesis of high-quality 2H-TaS2 nanowires via a controlled two-step conversion process from TaS3 precursors, achieving robust superconductivity with a transition temperature T c ≈ 3.6K, which is significantly higher than bulk 2H-TaS2 (T c ≈ 0.8K). Structural and compositional analyses confirm phase purity and preserved one-dimensional morphology, while magneto transport measurements reveal an enhanced upper critical field μ 0 H c2 (2K)≈5 T, far exceeding the bulk value (μ0Hc2 (0)≈1.17T), attributed to dimensional confinement and suppression of charge-density wave order. Magnetic characterization demonstrates complex vortex dynamics, including flux jumps and a …

Pciafl: Personalized And Class Imbalance-Aware Federated Learning For Driver Behavior Classification, Osho Osho, Shubh Garg, Suchetana Chakraborty, Sajal K. Das
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Automated understanding of driver behavior from vehicular kinematics is vital for safety-aware intelligent transportation systems. However, centralized cloud processing suffers from latency, scalability, and privacy issues. Federated Learning (FL) provides a decentralized alternative but faces two major challenges: (i) non-IID client data due to heterogeneous driving styles and sensors, and (ii) severe class imbalance, as risky behaviors are inherently rare. In this work, we propose a personalized FL framework that uses a shared CNN-LSTM backbone with client-adaptive classifiers and incorporates a cost-sensitive loss to address behavior skew. Evaluated on the UAH-DriveSet dataset, our method achieves 92.60% accuracy and 91.68% macro-F1, …

Meshless Collocation Methods For Time-Dependent Nonlocal Problems Based On Radial Basis Functions, Qiao Zhuang, Yanzhi Zhang, Zhongqiang Zhang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present radial basis function (RBF) collocation methods for time-dependent space fractional problems on general bounded domains. Building on a recently developed approach for accurately computing the integral fractional Laplacian of any RBF, we design collocation schemes for fractional heat and Stokes equations using extended-domain techniques. In particular, we propose a numerical Leray projection method for fractional Stokes problems, where both the discrete projection operator and the collocation scheme are formulated on extended domains to handle complex domains. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods in solving time-dependent nonlocal problems on complex domains.

Doctoral Dissertations
"The Circular Economy (CE) has gained momentum as a transformative framework for steering the construction value chain towards greater sustainability. However, this transition requires shifts in production and consumption patterns, adoption of circular business models, and the replacement of linear practices. Despite growing interest, CE adoption in construction faces persistent challenges, including sectoral fragmentation, lack of integrated governance frameworks, and limited coordination among stakeholders. This dissertation aims to accelerate the CE transition in the built environment through a multi-scale, interdisciplinary approach spanning five modules: (1) Module 1 develops a construction value chain-structured portfolio of CE strategies and assesses their implementation; …

"The human body represents a rich source of physiological and behavioral information, where precise analysis of anatomy, body parts, 3D pose, and motion enables cross-disciplinary precision applications. This dissertation formulates this challenge as a human modeling problem, where proposed algorithms convert the human body into a three-dimensional digital twin capturing anatomical structure and pose. These representations are further analyzed using additional algorithms to enable precision applications. To realize this vision, LiDAR sensing is adopted due to its privacy-preserving nature, robustness to lighting conditions, color-blind sensing characteristics, and decreasing cost.
Human modeling using LiDAR is challenging due to sparse, irregular, and …

"The construction industry contributes to the global economy, yet its cost management practices remain constrained by labor shortages and material price volatility. These challenges are intensified by economic disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and trade policy shifts. Despite a growing body of literature, five knowledge gaps remain unaddressed: (1) the absence of dynamic, and localized measures of construction labor shortages; (2) limited empirical investigation of macroeconomic leading indicators of labor shortages; (3) underutilization of deep learning (DL) algorithms in forecasting local construction labor earnings; (4) the limited treatment of structural breaks in existing construction material price forecasting models; and (5) the lack …
Strontium Titanate For Capacitor And Energy Storage Applications At Cryogenic Temperatures, Hung Trinh
Strontium Titanate For Capacitor And Energy Storage Applications At Cryogenic Temperatures, Hung Trinh
Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigates the dielectric properties of single crystal and ceramic strontium titanate (SrTiO3) for cryogenic capacitor applications from room temperature to 4 K. Permittivity (k) and loss tangent are dependent on temperature, frequency, mechanical stress, and applied DC electric field. Accordingly, the dielectric constant and loss tangent were measured at various frequencies and DC bias levels. Loss tangent data are also presented as equivalent series resistance (ESR). For single crystal SrTiO3, an impurity level of ≈500 ppm barium resulted in an increase of the maximum permittivity to approximately 50,000 at 6 K. This relatively high …

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a thermoplastic polyester widely used in beverage bottles and packaging materials, accounting for approximately 60% of global plastic production. Due to its non-biodegradable nature, the accumulation of waste PET has posed a serious environmental challenge worldwide. In recent years, the recycling of PET for use in road engineering has been considered an effective approach to promote resource circulation and reduce plastic pollution. This paper first reviews the main recycling methods of PET, including mechanical shredding and chemical depolymerization, and analyzes its molecular structure, thermal properties, and reprocessing adaptability. Two typical engineering application paths are then evaluated: …

Implicit and hybrid particle-in-cell methods are widely used for efficient simulation of DC discharge plasma transport. However, their computations require solving anisotropic elliptic equations and face challenges related to mesh geometry, non-axisymmetry, and complex interfaces. Moreover, the accuracy of particle trajectories is critical for plasma etching and erosion studies, where errors near interfaces can significantly impact simulation results. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a three-dimensional anisotropic trilinear partially penalized immersed finite element (ATPPIFE) method, which captures interfaces on Cartesian meshes and effectively reduces discontinuities at interface element faces, ensuring that particle trajectories better align with real-world behavior. This paper develops and compares multiple control strategies for a two-degree-of-freedom CIWS (Close-In Weapon System)-style turret tracking rapidly maneuvering airborne targets. A simplified nonlinear manipulator model with realistic actuator torque limits is used as the plant. Five controllers are implemented: a baseline PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller, a feedforward PID, a Kalman-filter-assisted PID, and two feedback-linearized designs using PID and LQR (Linear-Quadratic-Regulator)-based surrogate dynamics. Controller performance is evaluated on increasingly aggressive three-dimensional target trajectories under varying sensor noise. Results show that PID-family controllers achieve competitive tracking accuracy while remaining torque-efficient and largely unsaturated. Feedback-linearized controllers improve tracking accuracy only when sufficient actuator …

Producing high-quality fiber-reinforced composites requires precise temperature control during autoclave curing, as even small variations can lead to defects that compromise strength and reliability. At the same time, manufacturers aim to reduce energy use and shorten curing cycles without sacrificing material performance. To address these challenges, this study develops a data-driven Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network model capable of forecasting temperature evolution inside the autoclave throughout the curing cycle. The model is trained on time-series temperature data collected from multiple sensing locations, enabling it to learn the spatial and temporal trends that govern heat flow during curing. Data augmentation …

This work presents the results of the potential of band linear system solvers for improving the scalability of the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) method at large model sizes. The model is tested on the standard MNIST dataset with a range of solvers provided by the SciPy Python library. The results are analyzed taking into consideration the overall performance and the performance impact of band solvers across different matrix bandwidths, as well as the performance versus runtime analysis. The findings show potential in applying the proposed method to very large ELM models with narrow band matrices.

Bone regeneration is a multistage and tightly regulated process driven by coordinated interactions between the immune and skeletal systems. While inflammation is essential for initiating repair, its dysregulation contributes to delayed union, nonunion, and impaired healing commonly seen in trauma, chronic disease, and aging. Traditional interventions, including autografts and inert biomaterials, provide structural support but fail to engage or modulate the immune microenvironment that governs successful regeneration. Emerging research in osteoimmunology has revealed the centrality of immune cell populations such as macrophages, T regulatory cells, dendritic cells, and myeloid-derived suppressor cells in directing osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and the resolution of inflammation. …

A Coupled Thermo-Hydraulic Transfer Model For Soil Freezing, Antai Dong, Xiong Zhang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Frost heave is a common challenge in cold regions, threatening infrastructure stability. Despite decades of research, numerical simulation remains difficult due to the complex nature of coupled processes. This study presents a coupled thermo-hydraulic model for soil freezing, developed within the framework of unsaturated soil mechanics. The model uses suction and temperature as primary variables and incorporates a method to estimate ice content. It employs a soil freezing characteristic surface (SFCS), previously developed in related work, to calculate unfrozen water content as a function of both suction and temperature in partially frozen soils. The model is implemented in COMSOL for …

Skilled labor shortages are a pressing issue in the construction industry. Existing research has primarily focused on the effects of labor shortages at the project or industry level, but there is limited exploration of how these shortages vary across specific trades and their distinct impacts on project outcomes. Evidence indicates that labor shortages vary significantly among trades. This paper addresses this knowledge gap through quantitatively assessing the criticality of key construction trades based on the (1) extent of skilled labor shortages currently witnessed in each trade, (2) impact of these shortages on cost and schedule performance, and (3) degree of …

Blast-furnace slag, which contains high levels of CaO (and MgO), holds potential as a feedstock for CO2 capture and storage. This study investigates the phase transitions occurring during the wet carbonation of ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS), characterizes the physical and chemical properties of carbonated GGBFS (CS), evaluates its pozzolanic reactivity, and examines the microstructure and performance of cement pastes blended with GGBFS or CS. The findings reveal that aragonite and calcite, the primary carbonation products, precipitate on the surface of GGBFS, hindering its dissolution and thereby reducing both the pozzolanic reactivity and the early strength of cement pastes. …

Biaxial Bending Response Of Prestressed Concrete Girders Subjected To Accidental Asymmetric Prestressing Strand Loss, Haitham Abdelmalek, Mohanad Abdulazeez, Ahmed Ibrahim, Mohamed Elgawady
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Bridge prestressed concrete girders are vulnerable to sudden rupture of prestressing strands caused by accidental collisions with over-height trucks. These incidents often result in the asymmetric loss of prestressing strands and concrete sections, generating a biaxial bending moment caused by the combined effects of lateral bending and existing service loads. The induced lateral bending moment reduces the flexural resistance of prestressed concrete (PC) girders. However, the current AASHTO LRFD (load and resistance factor design) provisions for flexural resistance in PC members do not explicitly address the complexities introduced by biaxial bending, leaving the extent of strength reduction uncertain. This paper …

Mining industry is rapidly transforming into an AI-driven cyber-physical ecosystem where safety and operational reliability depend on robust perception, resilient communication, trustworthy distributed intelligence and continuous monitoring of miners and equipment. Real-world mining environments impose severe constraints like poor illumination, dust, occlusion, GPS-denied conditions, irregular underground topologies, and intermittent connectivity. These factors degrade perception quality, disrupt situational awareness, impair trajectory prediction and weaken the reliability of distributed learning systems. Emerging cyber-physical threats, including backdoor triggers, sensor spoofing, label-flip attacks and poisoned model updates, further jeopardize operational safety, particularly as mines increasingly adopt autonomous vehicles, humanoid assistance, and federated learning for …

Real-time traffic forecasting acts as a critical enabling service for IoT-driven Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). While existing Spatiotemporal Graph Neural Networks (STGNNs) achieve superior forecasting accuracy, their intensive computational complexity and high latency create a deployment bottleneck for resource-constrained IoT edge devices. To address this resource-accuracy mismatch, we propose a novel framework termed Dynamic Hub-Aware Knowledge Distillation (DHKD). Unlike traditional uniform distillation paradigms, DHKD introduces a topology-aware strategy to transfer knowledge from a complex teacher to a lightweight Spatiotemporal Multi-Layer Perceptron (STMLP) student model. Specifically, we design a dynamic hub-aware gating (DHAG) mechanism that adaptively identifies time-varying pivotal sensing nodes …

Federated Learning (FL), which facilitates collaborative model training and protects users' privacy, has drawn great interest from the research community. With FL, participants train their models on local data and submit the corresponding updates for aggregation to a server. While concealing the identities of the participants, FL may attract adversaries in order to hamper the underlying model. In this paper, we propose an FL framework, FedDOT, to defend against adversaries performing targeted attacks. FedDOT incorporates two powerful defense algorithms, Maximum Spanning Tree based attacker detection (MSTAD) and Densest graph-based attacker detection (Density-AD), which leverage correlation between weight updates and graph …
