Design Of 300 Ton Cyanide Tailings Plant And Operation Of Same, Lamar Horacio Hunt

Masters Theses

"The plant in question was designed by the writer, to treat the immense tailings dumps of the Sacramento Gold Mining company at Mercur, Utah, consisting of one-half million tons of old cyanide tailings. The ore is porous and friable, causing much slime, which is impermeable to cyanide solution, by the old leaching system. Slime has always been troublesome, and the above plant was designed to overcome this difficulty"--page [1].

A Method Of Obtaining Lead Concentrates From The Slimes Of The St. Joseph Lead Mill, Lewis Alfred Delano Jan 1909

A Method Of Obtaining Lead Concentrates From The Slimes Of The St. Joseph Lead Mill, Lewis Alfred Delano

Professional Degree Theses

"In the concentrating of lead ores, the water used in the mills carries the tailings from the jigs and tables to chatt tanks. Here the chatts and sands settle while the greater part of the water overflows and enters a sluice or slimes branch to the settling ponds. This overflow water carries with it a great deal of float lead. It is impossible to catch this lead in the mill on moving machinery without using too much power and mill space to effect a profitable saving. Ninety percent of this float will pass through a 140 mesh sieve. there will …

The Relation Of The Composition Of A Mineral To Its Properties, Edwin Phelps Murray

Professional Degree Theses

"The attempt has been made to bring together and to classify the properties of minerals and to show that there is some simple qualitative relation between their composition and physical properties, or in other words, to show that minerals containing different percentages of a certain element will all have similar properties dependent upon the proportion of that element. Further investigation of this subject would be in determining the modifying influence of crystal form"--page 1.

The Oxidation Of Natural Sulphides, Harry Clay Kibe Jan 1909

The Oxidation Of Natural Sulphides, Harry Clay Kibe

Bachelors Theses

"Work upon the oxidation of natural sulphides done at this laboratory indicates that laboratory methods might be successfully employed in seeking explanations of certain actual problems in the theory of ore deposition. This led me to experiment further with galena, sphalerite, and iron pyrite, which work confirms the results of Gottschalk and Buehler, namely, that the course of an oxidation is materially effected when mixtures of sulphides are employed rather than single individual minerals"--page 1.

The Design Of A Dam And The Investigation Of A Water Supply For The City Of Rolla, Missouri, Frank Xavier Nachtman, Ernst Lorenze Chamberlain

Bachelors Theses

"The object of this paper is to investigate a means of supplying the City of Rolla with better water at a reasonable a price as possible. The elevation and distance of the supply from the city were very important factors, also the most economical position for the dam was to be considered. After examining several drainage basins with the above purposes in mind we selected one just west of the City on account of its convenience and high elevation. The watershed includes an area of ever eight hundred acres and is divided into two parts which come together in a narrow …

Design Of Reinforced Concrete Water Tower And Tank, Harvey Oden Garst, Pearl Frederick Michael Jan 1909

Design Of Reinforced Concrete Water Tower And Tank, Harvey Oden Garst, Pearl Frederick Michael

Bachelors Theses

"Theoretically the most economical dimension for a flat bottomed cylindrical tank would be such that the height of the tank is equal to the diameter, but such a tank does not look as well as one which has the height a little greater than the diameter and as the cost will be affected but little by making the height a few feet greater than the diameter, the most economical design will not be strictly carried out in this particular"--Data, page 1.

The Cyanidation Of High Grade Gold And Silver Concentrate, Reginald Henry Brinton Butler, John Warren Beard

Bachelors Theses

"The cyanidation of high grade gold and silver concentrate is a subject that has lately been attracting the attention of metallurgists in different parts of the world, and offers an interesting field for investigation and research. The inducements are especially strong in districts at log distances from the smelter, and where high freight rates and excessive treatment charges obtain"--page 1.

A Study Of The Settlement Of Slimes, William Simpson Hall, James Crawford Compton Jan 1909

A Study Of The Settlement Of Slimes, William Simpson Hall, James Crawford Compton

Bachelors Theses

"The purpose of this thesis, as originally planned, was to determine the effect produced by certain substances called electrolytes upon the mill product known as "slimes". The subject presented an ever increasing number of new problems as it progressed and some work along the line of several of these branches is embodied in the following pages. Reports of investigation and behavior of slimes when treated for quick settlement are few and unsatisfactory. Our results may prove nothing already unknown, but the fact that so little data is easily accesible sic has been the motive for this thesis"--Preface, page 1.

Radiation Losses In Metallurgical Furnaces, Frank Richard Loveridge Jan 1909

Radiation Losses In Metallurgical Furnaces, Frank Richard Loveridge

Bachelors Theses

"The conduction and radiation of heat are of great importance in metallurgy. Metallurgical operations require, in the great majority of cases, temperatures above those of normal atmospheric conditions. Loss of heat is loss of dollars. Furnaces of all kinds allow to pass their walls a greater or less amount of heat, i.e. heat is lost by conduction and by radiation. This heat is often spoken of as radiation loss. It is due to the heat being conducted from the inside to the outside of the furnace. The materials of construction, and manner of building the furnace has much to do …

A Comparison Of The Solvents Used In The Hydrometallurgy Of Silver, Simon Jochamowitz, Enrique Cavazos Jan 1909

A Comparison Of The Solvents Used In The Hydrometallurgy Of Silver, Simon Jochamowitz, Enrique Cavazos

Bachelors Theses

"Potassium cyanide solutions, hyposulphite of soda solutions, and a mixture called the Russell solution, are the solvents most used to win silver from its ores. We are not the first to attempt comparisons of the solvent powers of the different solutions named. It is difficult, at least we have found it difficult, to find tabulated, a comparison of the various solvents from the points of view of speed of action, of consumption of reagents, of suitability of one or another to a given type of ore"--page 1.

The Volatilization And Absorption Of Silver Chloride, Edgar Joseph Wolf, Victoriano Elicano Jan 1909

The Volatilization And Absorption Of Silver Chloride, Edgar Joseph Wolf, Victoriano Elicano

Bachelors Theses

"The purpose of this thesis was to study the relation of the loss of silver chloride to such variables as the temperature, as the type of gangue, as the method of carrying on the roast; to determine what becomes of the silver lost and to attempt to recover it. In our work we consider something seemingly overlooked by many, if not all of the workers; namely, that there is a great loss of silver chloride due to absorption, as well as to volatilization. Volatilization has been the hobby of most of the experimeters. We hope to show as a part …

A Study Of The Losses Of Gold During Cupellation In The Presence Of Tellurium, George Albert Easley, Carl Winthrop Keniston Jan 1909

A Study Of The Losses Of Gold During Cupellation In The Presence Of Tellurium, George Albert Easley, Carl Winthrop Keniston

Bachelors Theses

"It is generally accepted that the presence, in the lead button, of a small amount of tellurium causes, during cupellation, a loss of gold. Little, however, is known as to the loss, when tellurium is present, due to variation in the temperature of cupellation...Our work was carried on with the intention of determining the loss of gold, due to temperature in the presence of known amount of tellurium and to compare this loss with that caused by the temperature alone. Has temperature the same, a greater, or a less effect on the loss of gold during cupellation when tellurium is …

"The object of this thesis was to determine the microstructure of the various grades of steel used in rock drilling and to obtain if possible some general relation between the structure, composition, and hardening temperature. About 35 of the best known grades of tool steel having a carbon content of about 1 per cent or containing an equivalent hardening agent"--page 2.

A Study Of Some Problems In Assaying, Aaron Max Shah Jan 1909

A Study Of Some Problems In Assaying, Aaron Max Shah

Bachelors Theses

"It is known that the lead button which we obtain from fire assay for silver does not represent the true value of the ore. There is always a loss of silver. To investigate the effect of varying the fluxes on the loss in silver is the object of the first part of this thesis...Silver ores often contain copper, part of which, during the fusion, enters the lead button, causing trouble during cupellation, since it must be done at a high temperature. It is, then, important to keep copper out of the lead button. The presence of litharge in the fusion …

Minerals And Their Environment Of Formation, Deforrest Don Jan 1909

Minerals And Their Environment Of Formation, Deforrest Don

Bachelors Theses

"The history of mineralogy began with the development of mining and the use of certain minerals as useful products, such as lime, pigments and precious stones. In order to know how to distinguish these minerals when found and where they were likely to found, it was necessary to study the nature, properties and the modes of occurrence. In order to determine all these properties, it was necessary to classify and compare them with the purpose of ascertaining how they resemble each other, and how they differ"--page 1.
