Distribution Of Trace Elements In Olivines And Proxenes - An Experimental Study, Melvin Leroy Bird
Distribution Of Trace Elements In Olivines And Proxenes - An Experimental Study, Melvin Leroy Bird
Doctoral Dissertations
"Olivine, pyroxene, and spinel were crystallized in the ternary system anorthite-forsterite-silica to which trace amounts of the transition metal ions Cr³⁺, Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Cu²⁺ had been added. The resulting concentrations of the transition metal ions in the liquid and crystalline phases were determined using the electron microprobe. The results, given as free energies and partition functions, indicate the order of substitution of the dipositive ions in all crystals to be Ni²⁺, Co²⁺, Mn²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Fe²⁺ according to the predictions of crystal field theory. The ion Cr³⁺ substituted in greater or lesser quantities depending on the crystalline phase. …
Response Surface Study Of A Characteristic Chemical Plant, John Thomas Mason Iii
Response Surface Study Of A Characteristic Chemical Plant, John Thomas Mason Iii
Doctoral Dissertations
"Study of the return on investment response surface of a characteristic chemical plant indicates unimodality in the valid region, but the optimum design condition with this response surface is strongly affected by the correlation used for the investment. The method used for the design of this type of chemical plant incorporates the use of a simulation routine for preliminary estimates"--Abstract, page ii.

X-Ray And Mössbauer Spectroscopy Studies Of The Silicon-Antimony And Bismuth-Antimony Alloys, James Ralph Teague
X-Ray And Mössbauer Spectroscopy Studies Of The Silicon-Antimony And Bismuth-Antimony Alloys, James Ralph Teague
Doctoral Dissertations
"X-ray and Mossbauer spectroscopy were used to investigate two antimony alloys, Bi-Sb and Si-Sb, showing semiconductorsemimetallic transitions or vice versa, depending on the antimony concentration in the host lattice. Resistivity and density measurements were found to be helpful in the analysis of the results. X-ray studies for dislocation-free antimony-doped silicon showed that the lattice constant of the alloy increased as the antimony concentration increased from 10¹⁸ to 10¹⁹ Sb atoms/cc. Rather good agreement was found between theoretical and experimental changes in lattice constant for dislocation-free silicon. Mössbauer studies showed that the isomer shift decreased linearly with increasing antimony concentration, which …
Empirical Bayesian Learning, David R. Cunningham, Arthur M. Breipohl
Empirical Bayesian Learning, David R. Cunningham, Arthur M. Breipohl
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
It is shown that a certain weighted average of the prior distribution and the empirical distribution yields an estimate of the posterior distribution that is consistent with Bayes' theorem. Acomparison of this approach and conventional parametric Bayesian estimation is made for some specific cases. Copyright © 1971 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Deriving Dc Machine Torque By The Principle Of Virtual Work, George Mcpherson
Deriving Dc Machine Torque By The Principle Of Virtual Work, George Mcpherson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The purpose of this paper is to fill a gap which exists in the "textbook" theory of dc machines. The paper shows that the usual expression for dc machine torque can be obtained from the direct application of the principle of virtual work to the machine, making the traditional assumptions. The method provides additional benefits in that it demonstrates the reluctance torque which results from the saliency of the field structure and shows that compensating windings have no effect on the torque under the assumed linear conditions. Some Statistical Inferences For The Bivariate Exponential Distribution, Bruce Mohr Bemis
Some Statistical Inferences For The Bivariate Exponential Distribution, Bruce Mohr Bemis
Doctoral Dissertations
"The bivariate exponential distribution is neither absolutely continuous nor discrete due to the property that there is a positive probability that the two random variables may be equal. Basic properties of the distribution are presented as well as methods of parameter estimation including maximum likelihood. The distribution is shown to satisfy the usual regularity conditions in spite of its possession of a singularity. The maximum likelihood estimates are asymptotically efficient. Two other methods of estimation are compared with the maximum likelihood method in terms of efficiency. Tests of the hypothesis that two random variables each have independent exponential distributions versus …
A Comparative Study Of Experimental And Computed Compressibility Factors Of Methane - Nitrogen - Helium System, Promod Kumar Taneja
A Comparative Study Of Experimental And Computed Compressibility Factors Of Methane - Nitrogen - Helium System, Promod Kumar Taneja
Masters Theses
"The volumetric data for methane, nitrogen, and helium mixtures have been determined experimentally at low temperatures (60ºF to -30ºF) over a pressure range of 1000 to 5000 psig. An attempt has been made to show that the extension of standard techniques viz, "The Law of Corresponding States" for predicting the compressibility factors of pure hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon mixtures is not adequate for mixtures containing even very small amounts of helium. The deviation from the computed compressibility factors is found to be maximum at low temperatures and high pressures (up to 22%) for the mixtures studied"--Abstract, page ii.
Transient Hydraulic Simulation: Breached Earth Dams, D. L. Fread
Transient Hydraulic Simulation: Breached Earth Dams, D. L. Fread
Doctoral Dissertations
"A conceptual method to alleviate flood damages due to over-topping failures of small earthfill dams is the incorporation of a relatively thin erosion retarding layer within the dam. This paper investigates the reduction in the reservoir release due to the hypothetical erosion retarding layer. In addition, the paper provides a method for the determination of an optimal location of the layer so as to minimize the maximum possible reservoir release due to a gradually breached earth dam. The transient reservoir flow is simulated by a numerical model, based upon the solution of the one-dimensional St. Venant unsteady open-channel flow equations. …

Design Of A Semi-Automatic Transmission, Yogendra Prahladray Buch
Design Of A Semi-Automatic Transmission, Yogendra Prahladray Buch
Masters Theses
"Design of a semi-automatic four-speed transmission for automotive engines with moderate horsepower is described. The basic configuration consists of main and countershafts and five pairs of constant-mesh gears. Engine torque is transmitted through an input gear pair to the countershaft, and finally to the output shaft through a selected output gear pair. Selection is accomplished by engaging one of five hydraulically operated clutches located on the countershaft. Engagement fixes the desired gear to the countershaft and engine torque is then transmitted to the mating gear, which is fixed to the output shaft. Fourth speed is obtained by coupling the input …

The Effect Of Diameter On The Film Boiling Behavior Of Liquid Nitrogen, William Joseph Wafer
The Effect Of Diameter On The Film Boiling Behavior Of Liquid Nitrogen, William Joseph Wafer
Masters Theses
"A film boiling heat transfer study was conducted for liquid nitrogen at atmospheric pressure. The heat transfer surfaces used were cylinders with outside diameters of 0.450, 0.650, 0.850, and 1.000 inches. The temperature differences covered were from approximately 150ºF to approximately 600ºF. The data indicate that the heat flux will decrease to a minimum then increase slightly as the diameter of the heat transfer element is increased at constant temperature difference. The heat transfer coefficient is expected to approach a flat plate correlation as the diameter approaches infinity"--Abstract, page ii.
Development Of A Set Of Optimum Synchronization Codes For A Unique Decoder Mechanization, Irv D. Siegel
Development Of A Set Of Optimum Synchronization Codes For A Unique Decoder Mechanization, Irv D. Siegel
Masters Theses
"Synchronization requirements are specified for and a unique decoder mechanization is associated with a particular communication system. Optimum synchronization codes, defined as codes which are the least susceptible to false synchronization indications, are sought. Existing sets of optimum codes are investigated for applicability. This Thesis shows how these sets were developed from selected criteria and demonstrates why their theoretical nature produces unsatisfactory results in the present application wherein all parameters are known. A computer program was written to examine code pattern performance in the specified decoder under actual operating conditions. From an analysis of the results, a recommended set of …
Free Vibrations Of Circular Cylindrical Shells, Sushil Kumar Sharma
Free Vibrations Of Circular Cylindrical Shells, Sushil Kumar Sharma
Masters Theses
"In this report bending theory of shells is used to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of circular cylindrical shells. The governing eighth-order system of differential equations has been put in a form which is especially suitable for numerical integration and application of different sets of homogeneous boundary conditions. The Holzer method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem. During numerical integration of the differential equations, the exponentially growing solutions are suppressed whenever they become larger than previously selected values. Numerical results are obtained for various shell geometry parameters and for three different sets of homogeneous boundary conditions. These …

Thickening And Dewatering Characteristics Of Activated Sludge Containing Metal-Precipitated Phosphorus, Lyle Wayne Merritt
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this research study was to investigate methods for the disposal of activated sludge containing metal-precipitated phosphorus. To accomplish this objective, chemically-treated activated sludge or a mixture of the secondary sludge with primary sludge were thickened and dewatered by vacuum filtration and centrifugation. The putrescibility of the dewatered secondary sludge was also evaluated, and since anaerobic digestion is the usual method of sludge treatment, a digestion study was conducted. Secondary sludge for these studies was produced in five 38-gpd (144-1/day) activated sludge pilot plants operated at the Rolla Southeast Treatment Plant. Ferric chloride and alum were added directly …
The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch
The Integrated Planning Method Of Project Planning, Development And Implementation, Joseph Frank Lynch
Masters Theses
"Present comprehensive planning endeavors lack a consistent methodology which will produce realistic, useable results. The validity of this statement should be obvious after one has read Miller's "Evaluation of City and Region Planning Techniques." This paper contains a methodology, "The Integrated Planning Method," which will go a long way toward correcting this gross inadequacy that planners presently encounter in directing planning efforts. Two government developed planning and analysis procedures that, up until this time have been applied almost exclusively to hardware systems, have been combined into one integrated planning methodology that will provide not only meaningful and rigorous definition and …

Thermal Expansivity And Refractive Index Determinations For Some Hydrosol Systems And Their Similarity To Properties Ascribed To "Anomalous" Water, Gerald Wayne Chappue
Thermal Expansivity And Refractive Index Determinations For Some Hydrosol Systems And Their Similarity To Properties Ascribed To "Anomalous" Water, Gerald Wayne Chappue
Masters Theses
"The characteristic thermal expansion and refractive index of aqueous dispersions of SiO₂ and NaOH were determined for samples contained in quartz micro-capillaries. Comparison is made with the expansivity and refractive properties of anomalous water or polywater as reported by other investigators. The similarity between the properties and behavior of various hydrosol systems and those ascribed to anomalous water is cited as a serious challenge to the hypothesized existence of an allotropic modification of water"--Abstract, page ii.
Contractor Quality Control: A Method Of Construction Inspection, John Scott Treadwell
Contractor Quality Control: A Method Of Construction Inspection, John Scott Treadwell
Masters Theses
"It has become apparent in recent years that the United States Government's construction contract supervision and administration procedures are causing an increase in contractor claims and disputes and that the system itself is becoming prohibitively expensive. To deal with some of these problems, the Department of Defense is attempting to implement a new approach to construction inspection--Contractor Quality control. Under the Contractor Quality Control System the majority of the standard contract inspection and testing responsibilities are placed on the contractor, and the Government relinquishes its traditional step-by-step inspection and testing procedures and withdraws to a position of contract surveillance. The …

Triangular Signal Stabilization Of Nonlinear Systems, Kamaleddin Yadavar Nikravesh
Triangular Signal Stabilization Of Nonlinear Systems, Kamaleddin Yadavar Nikravesh
Masters Theses
"Many nonlinear systems display self-sustained oscillations which are often undesirable. The stabilizing effect of a high frequency input signal on an oscillating system with one nonlinearity is determined by the characteristics of the nonlinear element in the system, the linear portion of the system and the amplitude of the signal. This investigation has been concerned with the effect of a triangular wave stabilizing signal on these self oscillations. The equivalent gains for several common nonlinearities are derived. The pseudo describing function introduced by Oldenburger and Boyer for sinusoidal stabilization has been extended to the triangular wave case, and it is …
