Some Problems In The Construction Of Artificial And Natural Gas Pipe Lines, Waring Mikell
Some Problems In The Construction Of Artificial And Natural Gas Pipe Lines, Waring Mikell
Professional Degree Theses
"In 900 A.D. the Chinese piped natural gas through bamboo tubes and used it for lighting, and about 1830 artificial gas was carried by three inch wooden pipes in a town in New England. Today there are many thousands of miles of steel pipe bringing gas from Western fields to eastern cities, and many more miles of steel and cast iron pipe for the distribution of artificial and natural gas in the majority of the towns and cities in the United States. This paper will deal with the construction of acetylene welded steel pipe lines, and some of the problems …
The Replacement Of Calcium Carbonate With Calcium Chloride And Calcium Fluoride In A Whiteware Body, Charles Richard Rosenbaum
The Replacement Of Calcium Carbonate With Calcium Chloride And Calcium Fluoride In A Whiteware Body, Charles Richard Rosenbaum
Bachelors Theses
"In the steel industry it is a common metallurgical practice to add fluospar sic (CaF₂), to a slag to render it more fluid. Ladoo states that the fluospar sic , thus added, forms eutechtics with the silica, alumina, calcium and barium sulfates, rendering them more fusible. The fluospar sic does not decompose, but forms solutions or eutechtics with other substances in the slag. He further states that calcium chloride (CaCl₂) has been used for this purpose but is apparently not as active, necessitating larger quantities per charge. It is also probably more expensive. Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) is commonly used as …
The Effect Of Reheating Certain Fire Brick On Pyrometric Cone Equivalents, Francis J. Louney
The Effect Of Reheating Certain Fire Brick On Pyrometric Cone Equivalents, Francis J. Louney
Bachelors Theses
"In a recent survey of the refractories field, especially with respect to the softening point of fire brick, it was suggested to the author that the possibility of reheating certain fire brick, according to the specifications given by the American Society for Testing Materials, might produce a difference in pyrometric cone equivalent from that of the original or unreheated sample. At present, there is considerable lack of knowledge regarding the problem, as evidenced by the utter lack of literature on the softening point resulting from the reheating of fire brick"--Introduction, leaf 1.

Steric Hindrance In The Ketonic Splitting Of Substituted Acetoacetic Ester, Claude Stanley Abshier
Steric Hindrance In The Ketonic Splitting Of Substituted Acetoacetic Ester, Claude Stanley Abshier
Masters Theses
"The phenomenon of steric hindrance has been observed and investigated in a variety of reactions, most of which have been with aromatic compounds. In this branch of study the speeds of reaction of ethyl acetoacetate, α-mono-methyl-ethyl-acetoacetate, α-mono-ethyl-ethyl-acetoacetate, α-mono-propyl-ethyl-acetoacetate in the presence of 0.05 and 0.10 normal hydrochloric acids have been investigated at temperatures between 60⁰C. and 90⁰C. An attempt has been made to explain the results obtained"--Introduction, page 1.
The Relation Between The Mean Molecular Weight And The Absolute Viscosity Of Lubricating Oils, John Isler Moore
The Relation Between The Mean Molecular Weight And The Absolute Viscosity Of Lubricating Oils, John Isler Moore
Masters Theses
"Of all the properties required of a good lubricant the most important is that of the viscosity at the temperature of its use. Most lubricants consist of oils blended or compounded together in such a way as to produce an oil of a desired viscosity, falling in the special group of viscosities expressed by the Society of Automotive Engineers in their tabulations.
There have been several methods developed to enable the refiner to blend quickly and efficiently although Bell stated that the methods were largely that of trial and error. Herschel formed a chart for blending by the logarithmic rule …
A Study Of Methods For Separating The Elements That Interfere In The Electrolytic Deposition Of Lead As Lead Oxide, John Shaw Sabine
A Study Of Methods For Separating The Elements That Interfere In The Electrolytic Deposition Of Lead As Lead Oxide, John Shaw Sabine
Masters Theses
"The electrolytic determination of lead as lead dioxide is a very desirable method, due to its simplicity, accuracy, and the small amount of the analyst's time required. The electrolytic method functions when both large and small amounts of lead are present. The method depends upon the fact that from a nitric acid solution the lead is plated upon the anode as lead dioxide; from the lead dioxide deposit the percentage of lead may be calculated.
An electrolytic method, for determining the lead in samples containing from 5 to 150 mg. of lead, was described in a paper by Schrenk and …
The Preparation And Specific Gravity Of Pure Formic Acid And Its Aqueous Solutions, Leo Henry Merchie
The Preparation And Specific Gravity Of Pure Formic Acid And Its Aqueous Solutions, Leo Henry Merchie
Masters Theses
"Formic acid, the lowest member of the fatty acid series, was obtained as early as the seventeenth century by distilling ants with water. Other methods were later found after the correct constitution of the acid became known. This acid is not difficult to prepare in a water solution, but it is difficult to obtain in the anhydrous state...The purpose of this work is to study the various methods of preparing anhydrous formic acid, to improve a method for preparing the anhydrous acid, and to correct specific gravity tables for aqueous solutions of formic acid"--Introduction, page 1-2.

Highway Bridge Design And Construction In Missouri, James Lingan Pasley
Highway Bridge Design And Construction In Missouri, James Lingan Pasley
Professional Degree Theses
"The design and construction of highway bridges is a subject so broad and includes so many different specialized branches of engineering that volumes would be required to discuss the matter in any detail. With this in mind, the writer will attempt to cover in the following paper only a brief outline of the different phases of the work and to show how a number of the special problems are handled by the Bureau of Bridges of the Missouri State Highway Department. The writer, having had seven years experience as detailer, designer, engineer of construction assignments, and chief draftsman with this …

Mining Methods At The Arevalo Mine, El Chico, Hidalgo, Mexico, John Gay Reilly
Professional Degree Theses
"The Arevalo Mine of the Cia.de Real del Monte y Pachuca is located nine kilometers north of the City of Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico. It is reached by an excellent automobile road from Pachuca. Several different branches of the Mexican Railway System place Pachuca within easy access of the different entries of Mexico"--The Arevalo Mine, Location, page 1.
The Effect Of Grain Sizing On The Strength And Porosity Of Refractory Grog Bodies, Robert Stafford Green
The Effect Of Grain Sizing On The Strength And Porosity Of Refractory Grog Bodies, Robert Stafford Green
Bachelors Theses
"The object of this work was to determine the effect of grain sizing on the strength and porosity of grog bodies. The investigation was carried out by the general method of making up bars of varying grain composition and testing them for strength and porosity"--page 1.
Factors Affecting The Electrolytic Deposition Of Small Amounts Of Lead As Lead Dioxide And The Composition Of The Deposit, Thomas Gordon Day
Factors Affecting The Electrolytic Deposition Of Small Amounts Of Lead As Lead Dioxide And The Composition Of The Deposit, Thomas Gordon Day
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the best conditions for the quantitative deposition of lead when the content of this element is below 5 milligrams and to study the composition of the deposited PbO₂. The following conditions were studied during the course of the investigation. 1. The maximum amounts of copper and zinc permissible for the quantitative determination of lead. 2. Methods of separating lead from zinc when the latter element is present in amounts greater than are permitted in the determination of the lead. 3. The separation of lead from copper when this element is in greater …
