The Fe-Ho Binary System, G. J. Roe, Thomas J. O'Keefe Sep 1970

The Fe-Ho Binary System, G. J. Roe, Thomas J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Fe-Ho phase diagram was determined on the basis of data obtained by X-ray diffraction, metallographic and differential thermal analysis techniques. Since emphasis was centered in the region where intermetallic compounds predominate, neither the iron nor holmium terminal regions were included in this study. Eutectic reactions were found to occur at 16.5 wt pct Fe and 875° C, 61 wt pct Fe and 1284° C, and 79 wt pct Fe and 1338° C. The congruent melting points of the compounds Ho6Fe23 and Ho2Fe17 were found to be 1332° and 1343° C, respectively. Two other intermetallic compounds were found, HoFe2 and …

Rotating Cylinder Apparatus For Rarefied Gas Flow Studies, Darryl J. Alofs, George S. Springer Aug 1970

Rotating Cylinder Apparatus For Rarefied Gas Flow Studies, Darryl J. Alofs, George S. Springer

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A rotating cylinder type apparatus is described, suitable for determining drag in cylindrical Couette flow of rarefied gases, and for evaluating tangential momentum accommodation coefficients at gas-solid boundaries. The apparatus is equipped with a damping device using diffusion pump oil for eliminating undesirable oscillations in the system. Tangential momentum accommodation coefficients of argon on aluminum were determined with an accuracy of ± 2.5%. The results obtained indicate that the apparatus may be used over a wide pressure range, corresponding to free molecule and continuum flow conditions.

A Simplification Heuristic For Large Flow Tables, R. J. Smith, James H. Tracey Jun 1970

A Simplification Heuristic For Large Flow Tables, R. J. Smith, James H. Tracey

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Flow tables specifying large asynchronous sequential circuits often contain more internal states than are required to specify desired circuit behavior. Known minimization techniques appear unsuited for reduction of such large (rows X columns > 250) flow tables, because of excessive computation and intermediate data requirements for problems of this size. The algorithm described here is intended to rapidly produce a simplified-but in general non-minimal-flow table. It is most economical when applied to extremely large tables and was devised primarily for automated design applications. The procedure has been programmed in PL/1 and has been incorporated into an asynchronous sequential circuit design automation …

Electron Emitter Tips And Method, P. D. Ownby

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Boron is deposited on the (110) plane facet at the center of a tungsten electron emitter tip by chemical vapor deposition of boron triiodide. The emission current density is greatest in the center of the emitting area (FIG. 2).

Differential Cross Section For Charged A₁ Photoproduction Using The Regge Exchange Formalism, Keiji Kikkawa, Barbara N. Hale Feb 1970

Differential Cross Section For Charged A₁ Photoproduction Using The Regge Exchange Formalism, Keiji Kikkawa, Barbara N. Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Regge-pole formalism is applied to the calculation of the differential cross section for A1+ photo-production in the region |tmin| < -t < 10µ2. The p, A1, A1-daughter, A2, and π trajectory contributions are considered, and use is made of chiral dynamics to estimate the unknown coupling constants. We find that the π and the A2 trajectories provide the dominant contributions.

Proceedings Of The International Symposium On Low Cost Housing Problems Related To Urban Renewal And Development, Oktay Ural Jan 1970

Proceedings Of The International Symposium On Low Cost Housing Problems Related To Urban Renewal And Development, Oktay Ural

International Symposia on Low Cost Housing Problems

PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION--We are very happy to have a second printing of the Proceedings of the First International Symposium on Low-Cost Housing Problems Related to Urban Renewal and Development. The rather quick and large demand of this publication proved to us, once more, the importance and timeliness of the concern on the topic of housing technology and production. The contributions from eighteen nations painted a real picture of housing conditions and needs around the world.

The fifty-one technical papers included in this volume have been selected intentionally in various aspects of housing to draw a complete and meaningful picture …

Magnetohydrodynamic Stability Of Laminar Flow In The Entrance Region Of A Parallel-Plate Channel, Thomas Eldon Eaton Jan 1970

Magnetohydrodynamic Stability Of Laminar Flow In The Entrance Region Of A Parallel-Plate Channel, Thomas Eldon Eaton

Masters Theses

"The hydrodynamic stability of laminar flow of an electrically conducting fluid flowing in a parallel-plate channel with an applied transverse magnetic field is investigated. The linear perturbation theory of hydrodynamic stability along with the assumption of low magnetic Reynolds number is applied to the governing equations to derive the governing rnagnetohydrodynarnic stability equation. A finite difference scheme is employed to numerically solve the magnetohydrodynamic stability equation. Neutral stability characteristics of the flow in the entrance region are obtained and presented. The neutral stability characteristics of the fully developed Hartmann flow are also re-examined and compared with those of a previous …

An Sem Surface Study Of Nucleate Pool Boiling Heat Transfer To Saturated Liquid Nitrogen Reduced Pressures From 0.1 To 0.9, David Virgil Porchey Jan 1970

An Sem Surface Study Of Nucleate Pool Boiling Heat Transfer To Saturated Liquid Nitrogen Reduced Pressures From 0.1 To 0.9, David Virgil Porchey

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study constituted an examination of both nucleate boiling and maximum heat flux characteristics of liquid nitrogen boiling from characterized surfaces. Several textures of gold plated copper surfaces were studied in addition to silver and silver oxide surfaces. Data were taken over a wide range of reduced pressures. All surfaces were examined using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Data and micrograph comparison revealed that both surface chemistry and surface roughness affect the nucleate boiling characteristics of liquid nitrogen. These effects are separated from each other showing that nucleate boiling is a function of both surface chemistry and topography. Surface roughness …
