Frequency Of Illicit Use Of Prescription Stimulants Is Associated With Perceived Adhd Symptoms, Justin Mendonca Apr 2021

Frequency Of Illicit Use Of Prescription Stimulants Is Associated With Perceived Adhd Symptoms, Justin Mendonca

Theses and Dissertations

The frequency of illicit use of prescription stimulants (IUPS) was examined in relation to known risk factors. A hierarchical linear regression (N = 903) was used to evaluate self-reported past-year IUPS and demographic variables. Gender (p < .05), race (p < .05), and GPA (p < .01) were significantly associated with the frequency of past-year illicit use. However, Greek organization membership status, perceived ADHD symptoms and access to prescription stimulant medication were not significant individual correlates of past-year IUPS. Additional analyses were conducted on the user subgroup (n = 101) to determine whether these relationships were similar compared to the general sample. Among users, ASRS Inattention and Hyperactivity-Impulsivity Subscale scores were significantly associated with the frequency of past-year IUPS (p < .05), even after accounting for gender, race, and GPA. Interpretations of these findings and implications for future research are discussed.

Investigating Ecological Links Between Floodplain Forests And Aquatic Communities, Conner Owens Apr 2021

Investigating Ecological Links Between Floodplain Forests And Aquatic Communities, Conner Owens

Theses and Dissertations

While there is a clear link between riparian forests and freshwater organisms, floodplain forests are seldom investigated due to difficulties in sampling structurally complex and periodically inundated habitat. This lack of research has led to large knowledge gaps that hinder our understanding of the conservation value of these unique, complex ecosystems for inland fisheries. Therefore, I aimed to determine how bottomland hardwood forests influence fish taxonomic, functional diversity and food web structure. I hypothesized that fish taxonomic and functional diversity are driven by forest complexity and the aquatic food web structure is driven by terrestrial carbon sources, specifically forest vegetation. …

Understanding how habitat amount and configuration affect species richness, occurrence or abundance has been one of the major foci of research in ecology and biogeography, given its central importance for conservation planning and landscape management. We conducted bird point counts within clearcuts and mature pine stands of different sizes and configuration in working pine forest in north-central Mississippi to determine species associations. Early-successional and mature pine focal species showed varying response to the proportion and proximity of vegetation conditions in the landscape. While elements of configuration exhibited a greater influence on predicted avian abundance in this landscape, meaning many species …

Applications Of Battery Energy Storage To Mitigate Disturbances And Uncertainties In Power Systems With High Penetration Of Renewable Energy Resources, Roshan Sharma Apr 2021

Applications Of Battery Energy Storage To Mitigate Disturbances And Uncertainties In Power Systems With High Penetration Of Renewable Energy Resources, Roshan Sharma

Theses and Dissertations

Solar photovoltaic (PV) is the fastest-growing energy resource. The price of energy generation from residential PV has dropped from $0.50 to $0.10 per kWh in the past decade. One challenge with this resource is that the amount of power available depends on the solar irradiance and temperature. Abrupt changes in solar irradiance can cause disturbances to the hosting electricity network and lead to voltage and frequency oscillations. The impact is more severe in a weak grid with high penetration of such resources. Evolving grid interconnection standards are imposing requirements to limit the impacts of these disturbances on the grid. Battery …

Evaluation Of Dicamba Volatility When Applied Under Field And Controlled Environmental Conditions, John M. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Dicamba resistant (DR) cropping technology has increased dicamba use, resulting in observation of dicamba off-target-movement (OTM). Volatility is one form of this movement. Tank mixtures and environmental conditions impact the volatile behavior of dicamba following application. Research was conducted in 2018, 2019, and 2020 to further assess and understand volatility mitigation by understanding tank-mix effects and utility of irrigation on volatility mitigation. Low tunnel and humidome methodology were used to analyze impact of tank mixtures and irrigation on dicamba volatility. Data suggest tank mixing encapsulated chloroacetamide formulations can mitigate volatility when comparing identical active ingredients formulated as emulsifiable concentrates. Tank-mixed …

The Role Of The Endocannabinoid System In Immune Homeostasis With An Emphasis On The Immune Effects Of Carboxylesterase Inhibition By Chlorpyrifos In Murine Lung Tissue, Brittany Nichole Szafran Apr 2021

The Role Of The Endocannabinoid System In Immune Homeostasis With An Emphasis On The Immune Effects Of Carboxylesterase Inhibition By Chlorpyrifos In Murine Lung Tissue, Brittany Nichole Szafran

Theses and Dissertations

The endocannabinoid system is composed of endocannabinoids (eCBs), their cognate receptors, and their biosynthetic and catabolic enzymes. Inhibition of serine hydrolases (catabolic enzymes), such as carboxylesterases (CES), might result in the accumulation of eCBs. eCBs, such as 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), have been shown to increase or reduce inflammation via engagement with cannabinoid receptors on immune cells. This research focuses on exploring the ability of eCBs and their metabolizing enzymes to regulate inflammation. First, a negative feedback mechanism between inflammation and the eCB system was examined by identifying serine hydrolases inhibited by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation in mice. Ces2g activity was inhibited and …

An Nlp Leveraged Approach To Formulate Environment Assertions For Requirements-Based Testing, Austin R. Thompson Apr 2021

An Nlp Leveraged Approach To Formulate Environment Assertions For Requirements-Based Testing, Austin R. Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

In order to mitigate the ever-increasing trend in software failures with far reaching consequences, research has suggested close coordination of requirements engineering (RE) and testing. The literature also advocates the notion of requirements-based testing (RBT) focusing on checking both the quality attributes and implementation of requirements. As requirements reside in the environment comprised of certain problem domain phenomena, the environment assertions connecting some of these phenomena in the indicative mood play a critical part in determining the correctness of a software solution. Although several investigations emphasize the role of environment assertions in testing and QA activities, including RBT, current literature …

Theses and Dissertations

Coastal restoration has become a necessary and ubiquitous practice to enhance and conserve the many ecosystem services lost by marsh degradation. Wave climate is one of the most critical factors to consider for restoration projects. However, knowledge of the ways that waves affect marsh plants and the ecosystem services they provide is limited. The purpose of my dissertation was to improve the effectiveness of coastal marsh restoration by addressing the limitations and gaps associated with plant and ecosystem responses to waves through empirical research with three primary goals: 1) develop and test a low-cost wave gauge, 2) use it to …

The Role Of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum-Mitochondria Interplay In Shaping Pathological Phenotype Development In Cardiac Diseases Marked By Ryanodine Receptor Dysfunction, Brian Tow Apr 2021

The Role Of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum-Mitochondria Interplay In Shaping Pathological Phenotype Development In Cardiac Diseases Marked By Ryanodine Receptor Dysfunction, Brian Tow

Theses and Dissertations

Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) and pre-diabetic cardiomyopathy (pre-DC) are two cardiac diseases characterized by dysfunction in sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+ release channel RyR2. Despite similar defects in RyR2 leading to aberrant Ca2+ release (ACR), CPVT and pre-DC display divergent pathological phenotypes. Recent findings suggest SR-mitochondria interplay could contribute to pathological development; therefore, the role of SR-mitochondria interplay in shaping intracellular Ca2+ signaling was examined in CPVT and pre-DC by pharmacologically modulating mitochondria Ca2+ handling. Mitochondria can affect cytosolic/global Ca2+ dynamics through at least two mechanisms: buffering cytosolic Ca2+, or generating ROS to modulate RyR2 functionality via posttranslational modifications. Our …

Influence Of Boat Activity On Wave Climate In Back Bay Of Biloxi, Ms, Matthew Virden Apr 2021

Influence Of Boat Activity On Wave Climate In Back Bay Of Biloxi, Ms, Matthew Virden

Theses and Dissertations

Wave energy is a major driver for many coastal processes and influences wetland vegetation and shoreline stability. Coastal conservation and restoration projects often include wave climate estimations in the decision-making process for project design. The current method primarily used to estimate a project area's wave climate is the use of wind-wave models. These models use wind speed, wind direction, bathymetry, and fetch to estimate site-specific wave activity. However, these models neglect boat wake which is an important contributor to wave energy in fetch-limited environments. This study used site-specific wave measurements to compare wind-protected and open sites in Back Bay, Mississippi. …

Theses and Dissertations

St. Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze] is a widely used lawn grass in the southeastern United States. St. Augustinegrass is typically vegetatively established from plugs or sod. Establishment of St. Augustinegrass sod can be slowed due to weed competition. Weed-infested sod may not be harvestable and is less desirable by end users. Preemergence herbicides are used to prevent weed infestation; however, preemergence herbicides often negatively affect sod grow-in. Current research evaluated the effects of contemporary preemergence herbicides on St. Augustinegrass grow-in from plugs. Grow-in was evaluated using visual estimates of percentage St. Augustinegrass cover, as well as Normalized Difference Vegetation …

The purpose of this study is to explore how to make persuasive messages effective to sufficiently motivate individuals to form good security practice through two aspects - affect valence-based message and message framing effect. The two emotional appeals examined in this study include traditional fear appeals and humor appeals. Fear appeals, arousing people's fear to persuade them to take precautionary actions, are predominant in the literature of information security. By contrast, humorous messages have been found to induce positive affect, reduce negativity, and enhance message acceptance. In addition, messages can be illustrated in a broader context or can be presented …

The Influenza Ribonucleoprotein Complex And Its Impact On Viral Replication And Evolution, Kaitlyn Waters Apr 2021

The Influenza Ribonucleoprotein Complex And Its Impact On Viral Replication And Evolution, Kaitlyn Waters

Theses and Dissertations

The ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex of influenza A viruses (IAVs) is responsible for replication and transcription of viral RNA and genome, respectively. Mutations in the RNP genes have been identified to play a role in host adaptations and tissue tropisms of IAVs, and compatibility among these genes has been implicated as an important factor for facilitating reassortment of IAVs. Furthermore, mutations and reassortment can drastically impact the polymerase activities of the RNP complex in vitro. However, the simultaneous role both of these mechanisms play in enhancing or diminishing polymerase activities of divergent IAVs remains opaque, and therefore, a greater understanding of …
