Safety Risk Assessment And Improvement Method For Precast/ Prestressed Concrete Industry Plant, Sayali G. Joshi Apr 2021

Safety Risk Assessment And Improvement Method For Precast/ Prestressed Concrete Industry Plant, Sayali G. Joshi

Theses and Dissertations

The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) is the technical institute for precast/prestressed concrete industry. The plant involves activities such as placing high tensile steel strings inside the concrete products before they harden. This process needs the strings to be "stressed" hydraulically with high tension, which provides possibility of breaking the strand. Hence, employees may face a severe injury around the stressing bed. As various activities take place on the plant at the same time, employees must follow certain safety protocols while being around the plant. Another safety concern on the precast plant is silica exposure. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) …

Field Application Of The Pm Device And Assessment Of Early Age Behaviors Of Cement Stabilized Pavement Layers, William Griffin Sullivan Apr 2021

Field Application Of The Pm Device And Assessment Of Early Age Behaviors Of Cement Stabilized Pavement Layers, William Griffin Sullivan

Theses and Dissertations

Cement stabilized material used for subbase or base pavement layers has been a widely accepted practice by many state Departments of Transportation (DOTs); particularly, for DOTs with limited access to quality crushed aggregates for pavement construction. Despite over 100 years of use, construction specifications governing cement stabilized pavement layers have largely remained the same and are primarily method based specifications (i.e. individual components evaluated and construction methods prescribed) rather than evaluating or testing mechanical properties of the end product. With the recent emergence of the Plastic Mold compaction Device (PM Device), multiple agencies are looking to depart from method based …

Laboratory Testing Protocols To Represent Thermo-Mechanical Signatures Of High Strength Concretes In Medium To Mass Sized Placements, Ashley Suzanne Carey

Theses and Dissertations

Structural elements comprised of high strength concrete (HSCs) have gained popularity due to their high compressive strength, increased tensile strength, and low permeability that can be achieved with smaller placements relative to what would be needed with traditional ready mixed concretes. HSCs are also gaining interest for mass placements that are very large. Determining in-place properties of any of these structures is critical to the overall success of a project and elusive to determine prior to placement. In this dissertation, a laboratory based thermo-mechanical framework is outlined to predict in-place properties of modest to mass sized HSC structures using mostly …

Amplified heat from stadium infrastructure substantially impact attendants’ thermal comfort. In order to assess personal heat exposure and mitigate exposure misclassification, temperature and relative humidity sensors (iButtons) were placed throughout Mississippi State University’s Davis Wade Stadium during the 2016 Football Season. iButton measurements established a micro-climate and compared its readings to the Soil Climate Analysis Network site 1.2 miles north of the stadium. The program RayMan Pro modeled a Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) micro-climate to …

Exploring The Intracellular Functions Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Neuronal And Glial Cells, Jewellian V. Welcher Apr 2021

Exploring The Intracellular Functions Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Neuronal And Glial Cells, Jewellian V. Welcher

Honors Theses

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of highly regulated zinc and calcium dependent endopeptidases that have a crucial role in a multitude of biological processes. While the extracellular function of MMPs as effectors of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and their role in cell surface signaling regulation has been well studied, their intracellular function and role in central nervous system (CNS) still tends to be elusive. While the intimidating task of analyzing the 23 different human MMPs with sometimes overlapping function remains an obstacle, models such as Drosophila melanogaster with only two MMPs, dMMP1 and dMMP2, provide an ideal start. To …

An Explainable Method For Prediction Of Sepsis In Icus Using Deep Learning, Kourosh T. Baghaei Apr 2021

An Explainable Method For Prediction Of Sepsis In Icus Using Deep Learning, Kourosh T. Baghaei

Theses and Dissertations

As a complicated lethal medical emergency, sepsis is not easy to be diagnosed until it is too late for taking any life saving actions. Early prediction of sepsis in ICUs may reduce inpatient mortality rate. Although deep learning models can make predictions on the outcome of ICU stays with high accuracies, the opacity of such neural networks decreases their reliability. Particularly, in the ICU settings where the time is not on doctors' side and every single mistake increase the chances of patient's mortality. Therefore, it is crucial for the predictive model to provide some sort of reasoning in addition to …

Modeling Risk Analysis Of A Layered Commercial Solution For A Classified Program When A Patient Attacker Is Present, Marsella Farnam Apr 2021

Modeling Risk Analysis Of A Layered Commercial Solution For A Classified Program When A Patient Attacker Is Present, Marsella Farnam

Theses and Dissertations

Layered security systems pose significant challenges while attempting to monitor security related activities. The varying attributes embedded within each layer as well as the attribute interdependencies within and across layers takes measurement complexity to an exponential state. The many interdependencies at play in an interconnected infrastructure further exacerbates the ability to measure overall security assurance. Then enters the patient attacker who infiltrates one layer of this security system and waits for the opportune time to infiltrate another layer. The ability to simulate and understand risk with respect to time in this dynamic environment is critical to the decision maker who …

Implementation Of Second-Order Correlation Spectroscopy (Socos) Via All- Gaussian Coherent Stokes And Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering, Supriya Nagpal Apr 2021

Implementation Of Second-Order Correlation Spectroscopy (Socos) Via All- Gaussian Coherent Stokes And Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering, Supriya Nagpal

Theses and Dissertations

Powerful spectroscopic techniques increasingly involve nonlinear processes that arise due to the convolution of more than one electric field - input laser pulse. Analyzing the output of optical processes like these demands the utilization of deterministic improvement tools. Three-color coherent Raman scattering represents a complex non-degenerate four wave mixing process that includes contributions from both resonant and non-resonant interaction of the three input fields to generate a signal. In order to quantify these contributions, effective differentiation of the non- resonant (background) from the resonant (coherent signal) is required. These contributions can be differentiated based on how the molecular vibrational modes …

Implementation Of Uas-Based P-Band Signals Of Opportunity Receiver For Root-Zone Soil Moisture Retrieval, Preston Peranich Apr 2021

Implementation Of Uas-Based P-Band Signals Of Opportunity Receiver For Root-Zone Soil Moisture Retrieval, Preston Peranich

Theses and Dissertations

Root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) is an important variable when forecasting plant growth, determining water availability during drought, and understanding evapotranspiration as a flux. However, current methods indirectly estimate RZSM using data assimilation, which requires time-series data to make model-based predictions. This is because direct measurement requires a lower frequency signal, typically P-band and below (<500MHz), to reach root zone depths and, in turn, necessitates a larger antenna to be deployed in space, which is often unfeasible. A new remote sensing technique known as Signals of Opportunity (SoOp) reutilizes transmitted communication signals to perform microwave remote sensing. This means that SoOp platforms need not include a transmitter, but rather rely on passive radar technology to make measurements. This thesis details the development of a UAS-based P-band SoOp receiver instrument. This platform will be used to progress the state-of-art in techniques for direct measurement of RZSM.

Uvc Disinfection Of Covid-19 And Associated Bacteria On Personal Protective Equipment, Ryden Christopher Smith Apr 2021

Uvc Disinfection Of Covid-19 And Associated Bacteria On Personal Protective Equipment, Ryden Christopher Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The COVID-19 pandemic has been an unprecedented public health crisis around the world and has created novel needs in the healthcare industry. Primary among these needs is a vast shortage in personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gloves. This is problematic due to the near constant of COVID-19 cases in hospitals around the United States. In an effort to meet the need for more PPE, new disinfection techniques must be found to "recycle" used PPE. Machine Learning For Wireless Signal Learning, Logan Smith Apr 2021

Machine Learning For Wireless Signal Learning, Logan Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless networks are vulnerable to adversarial devices by spoofing the digital identity of valid wireless devices, allowing unauthorized devices access to the network. Instead of validating devices based on their digital identity, it is possible to use their unique "physical fingerprint" caused by changes in the signal due to deviations in wireless hardware. In this thesis, the physical fingerprint was validated by performing classification with complex-valued neural networks (NN), achieving a high level of accuracy in the process. Additionally, zero-shot learning (ZSL) was implemented to learn discriminant features to separate legitimate from unauthorized devices using outlier detection and then further …

The Fracture Behavior Of Stitched Sandwich Composites, Daniel Adam Drake Apr 2021

The Fracture Behavior Of Stitched Sandwich Composites, Daniel Adam Drake

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the influence of through-the-thickness reinforcements on the fracture behavior of stitched sandwich composites and to develop predictive methodologies to aid in simulating their damage-tolerant capability. Sandwich composites are widely used for their high stiffness-to-weight ratio due to their unique material architecture, which is composed of two rigid, outer facesheets that are bonded to a light-weight internal core. However, sandwich composites are limited by their low interlaminar strengths and can develop core-to-facesheet separation when subjected to low out-of-plane loads. In this study, sandwich composites were manufactured with through-the-thickness reinforcements, or stitches, to act …

Theses and Dissertations

Soybean growers in the mid-southern U.S. face many challenges imposed by adverse weather conditions that vary spatially and temporally. As a result, growers experience variations in soybean seed quality, grain quality, and yield. While not every harvest season experiences extremes in environmental conditions, those that do may result in major quality issues that could lead to significant financial losses. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate quality as it relates to delayed harvest conditions for soybean following common management practices such as fungicide application to mitigate spread of pathogens or harvest aid application to facilitate more efficient harvest. …

Modeling Statistical Distributions And Evaluating Properties Of Mill-Run Lumber, Guangmei Cao Anderson Apr 2021

Modeling Statistical Distributions And Evaluating Properties Of Mill-Run Lumber, Guangmei Cao Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Although it is common to model modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of graded lumber as normal, lognormal, or Weibull distributions, recent theories and empirical practices have cast doubt on these models. Mathematical proofs have been used to shown how the MOR distributions of graded lumber can be derived from the MOR distributions of mill-run populations. The MOR distribution of a graded lumber subpopulation is "pseudo- truncated" and does not exhibit the same theoretical form as the mill-run population from which it was drawn. Therefore, it is essential to explore the properties of mill-run lumber populations and …

Evaluation Of The Rainfastness Of Selected Insecticides In Cotton, Sara Inez Barrett

Theses and Dissertations

Rainfastness of insecticides is an understudied aspect of agricultural research. Little is known about the residual of commonly used products for key pests of cotton, as well as their residual after a rainfall event. This project was designed to evaluate the impact of rainfall on the performance of commonly used insecticides for tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca (Hinds); tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois); and bollworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), management in cotton. Laboratory and field experiments suggest that rainfall occurring within 16 hours after application had a negative impact on the performance of most insecticides. Chemical analyses of leaf …

Once Upon A Product: Online Product Descriptions, Product-Level Narratives, And The Perceived Customization Effect, Christian Barney Apr 2021

Once Upon A Product: Online Product Descriptions, Product-Level Narratives, And The Perceived Customization Effect, Christian Barney

Theses and Dissertations

Nearly every element of human life has a strong narrative component, from music (Kramer, 1991, McClary, 1997) to psychology (McAdams, 2008; Sarbin, 1986) to museums (Austin, 2010) and beyond. In the marketing of products, particularly products online, narratives may be a severely underutilized resource. As the global pandemic has shifted consumption increasingly online (Ecola et al., 2020, Melton, 2020), marketers are challenged to find new ways to make their product appealing to consumers without the ability of physical experiences that help connect a consumer to a product (Thaler, 1980; Peck and Shu, 2009). One way in which product attachment and …

Nitrogen (N) is the most critical fertilizer applied nutrient for supporting plant growth. It is a critical part of photosynthesis as a component of chlorophyl, hence it is a key indicator of plant health. In recent years, rapid development of multispectral sensing technology and machine learning (ML) methods make it possible to estimate leaf chemical components such as N for predicting yield spatially and temporally. The objectives of this study were to compare the relationships between canopy reflectance and corn (Zea mays L.) leaf N concentration acquired by two multispectral sensors: red-edge multispectral camera mounted on the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle …

Multi-Cohort Examination Of Sedentary Behavior, Physical Activity, And Metabolic Syndrome, Robert Edward Booker Jr. Apr 2021

Multi-Cohort Examination Of Sedentary Behavior, Physical Activity, And Metabolic Syndrome, Robert Edward Booker Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Cardiometabolic diseases are the leading causes of worldwide mortality, of which metabolic syndrome is a major contributor. Increased sedentary behavior and decreased physical activity have been independently associated with increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome and subsequent maladies. Likewise, the development of more contemporary methodologies of measuring metabolic syndrome allow for a more nuanced examination of risk. However, these new methodologies lack extensive utilization among the physical activity epidemiology literature. The scarcity of research incorporating the independent relations between sedentary behavior, physical activity, and contemporary methodologies to measure metabolic syndrome warrants additional investigation. This dissertation aimed to further discern these …
