Computational Simulation Of Southern Pine Lumber Using Finite Element Analysis, Yali Li Aug 2021

Computational Simulation Of Southern Pine Lumber Using Finite Element Analysis, Yali Li

Theses and Dissertations

Finite element analysis modeling is a powerful technology to predict the response of materials and structures under certain loaded situations including the applied force, the changing temperature and humanity, the alterative boundary condition, etc. In this paper, the mechanical properties of wood material were analyzed with an emphasis on bending behavior under lateral applied force with the finite element simulation in ABAQUS (Dassault Systèmes, 2020 version). Two methods were conducted in ABAQUS commercial software and the modulus of elastic (MOE) attained from the computational results were compared with the data obtained from the experimental records. The simulation model with grain …

Temporal Alterations In Bovine Placental Capacity During Compromised Pregnancies, Zully E. Contreras Aug 2021

Temporal Alterations In Bovine Placental Capacity During Compromised Pregnancies, Zully E. Contreras

Theses and Dissertations

The circadian rhythms are not solely regulated by photoperiod but are also influenced by feed regimen. Therefore, maternal nutrient restriction during gestation could potentially impact the fetal circadian rhythm. Melatonin, a circadian rhythm modulator hormone, has shown to act as an antioxidant reducing reactive oxygen species during stress exposure; and two potential mechanisms have been proposed for melatonin causing vasoconstriction and vasodilation regulating blood flow. In livestock species, nutrient restriction during gestation reduces uterine blood flow, limiting nutrients availability to the fetus for growth and development. Therefore, this project aimed to use beef heifers to evaluate the maternal nutrient restriction …

Penstemon's Centromeric Histone 3 Variation And The Impact Of Soil Steaming On High Tunnel Tomato Production, Xin Ye Aug 2021

Penstemon's Centromeric Histone 3 Variation And The Impact Of Soil Steaming On High Tunnel Tomato Production, Xin Ye

Theses and Dissertations

We evaluated the genetic diversity of Penstemon's Centromeric Histone 3 (CENH3), which localizes to chromosome centromeres in eukaryotes. From RNA extractions of 56 species, we successfully amplified two CENH3s (termed CENH3a and CENH3b), which share approximately 69% sequence homology across the length of the gene and about 85% across the histone fold domain (HFD). CENH3a is generally 72 bp longer than CENH3b and contains seven exons while CENH3b is made of five. Unlike studies of CENH3 in other plants, Penstemon's CENH3 N-tail was found to be highly conserved, indicative that the genus has undergone a short evolutionary history. Surprisingly, of …

Some New Anomaly Detection Methods With Applications To Financial Data, Zhicong Zhao Aug 2021

Some New Anomaly Detection Methods With Applications To Financial Data, Zhicong Zhao

Theses and Dissertations

Novel clustering methods are presented and applied to financial data. First, a scan-statistics method for detecting price point clusters in financial transaction data is considered. The method is applied to Electronic Business Transfer (EBT) transaction data of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). For a given vendor, transaction amounts are fit via maximum likelihood estimation which are then converted to the unit interval via a natural copula transformation. Next, a new Markov type relation for order statistics on the unit interval is developed. The relation is used to characterize the distribution of the minimum exceedance of all copula transformed transaction …

Technology Storylines: A Narrative Analysis Of The Rural Education Research, Eizabeth S. Wargo, Jeff Simmons Jul 2021

Technology Storylines: A Narrative Analysis Of The Rural Education Research, Eizabeth S. Wargo, Jeff Simmons

The Rural Educator

This piece offers a systematic review of rural (P-12) education technology literature. Drawing upon a social change frame (Ogburn, 1922), current rural education technology research within the subfield is collected, examined, and synthesized. Findings explicate that methodological diversity is a strength; however, some populations (e.g., middle school teachers) have thicker coverage than others (e.g., high school students). Additionally, many studies lean on rhetorical structures about what could and should be happening in rural schools, rarely delving into the how’s and whys associated with actual technology use in rural contexts. The piece concludes with a call for scholarship which assists in …

Against All Odds: Facilitating Research On The First Black Legislators In Mississippi, Deedee Baldwin Jun 2021

Against All Odds: Facilitating Research On The First Black Legislators In Mississippi, Deedee Baldwin

UL Publications

Researched and maintained by the history librarian at Mississippi State University (MSU) Libraries, “Against All Odds” (https://much-ado.net/legislators/) is a digital humanities project that provides biographical information, photographs, excerpts from primary and secondary sources, and over 900 newspaper clippings documenting the lives and careers of the first African American men to serve in Mississippi's legislature during and just after Reconstruction. Because information on most of these men is so difficult to find, the site is designed to facilitate research by historians, librarians, students, and family historians alike. It has resulted in a presentation for the Mississippi Department of Archives …
