The Effects Of Year-Round Supplemental Feeding Of White-Tailed Deer On Sources Of Disease, Miranda Hsiang-Ning Jacobson Huang
The Effects Of Year-Round Supplemental Feeding Of White-Tailed Deer On Sources Of Disease, Miranda Hsiang-Ning Jacobson Huang
Theses and Dissertations
Supplemental feeding of deer is a common management action. However, concentrating animals, as feeding does, is known to promote the transmission of disease. We examined how feeding alters three sources of disease: aflatoxins, gastrointestinal parasites, and ticks. To do this, we paired 79 feeder sites throughout Mississippi with ecologically-equivalent sites without feeders. Wildlife visitation increased at feeders compared to sites without feeders. For aflatoxins, we sampled during the summer and hunting season and found low prevalence and levels in feeders and bagged/bulk feed. The greater concern was environmental exposure to aflatoxins. All corn piles exposed to environmental contamination in July …
Creation Of The Data Analysis Tool For Ship Simulation (Datss), Morgan M. Johnston
Creation Of The Data Analysis Tool For Ship Simulation (Datss), Morgan M. Johnston
Theses and Dissertations
1980's. A virtual harbor containing validated numerical currents, bathymetric data, and realistic vessel response allows pilots with local knowledge to test channel modifications in a no-risk environment. Current analyzes rely heavily on subject matter experts (pilots) to inform recommendations and does not analyze data output from the ship simulator. The Data Analysis Tool for Ship Simulation (DATSS) allows the user to process raw data from the ship simulator, generate summary information, compare simulations directly, and produce figures by using a rapid, semi-standardized method. This study features a case study of Mobile Harbor which presents three different possible applications of the …
Thimet Oligopeptidases Top1 And Top2 Are Essential Regulators Of Defense Priming And Systemic Acquired Resistance In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Najmeh Nejat
Theses and Dissertations
The effector-triggered immunity (ETI) is activated at the site of pathogen infection and results in a state of enhanced immunity called systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in distal, uninfected plant organs. SAR relays on mobile signals transported from infected cells to distal organs, and on signal amplification which supports transcriptional re-programming associated with priming and execution of SAR. Previous research in our lab has identified the chloroplastic TOP1 and cytosolic TOP2 as salicylic acid (SA)–binding oligopeptidases, non-competitively inhibited by SA. We demonstrate that SAR triggered with P. syringae DC3000 AvrRpt2 is abolished in top2 whereas top1 top2 exhibits a SAR slightly …
Identification And Analysis Of Genes Associated With Drought Tolerance In Rice, Muteb Daham Q Alrifdi
Identification And Analysis Of Genes Associated With Drought Tolerance In Rice, Muteb Daham Q Alrifdi
Theses and Dissertations
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important crop cultivated worldwide, and abiotic stresses limit its productivity. Different approaches were carried out to understand the mechanisms of rice defense responses against abiotic stresses, mainly drought. The NADPH-generating enzymes engaged in response to dehydration and salt stresses during the seedling stage of Nipponbare cultivar were analyzed. Enzyme activities of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH), NADP-dependent aldehyde dehydrogenase, NADP-malic enzyme (NADP-ME) in leaves, and 6PGDH in roots were significantly increased in response to dehydration stress. NADP-ME and NADP-glutamate dehydrogenase activities in roots increased significantly in response to salt stress. These results suggest the involvement of …
Optical Probing Of Spatial Structural Abnormalities In Cells/Tissues Due To Cancer, Drug-Effect, And Brain Abnormalities Using Mesoscopic Physics-Based Spectroscopic Techniques, Prakash Adhikari
Theses and Dissertations
The quantitative measurement of structural alterations at the nanoscale level is important for understanding the physical states of weakly disordered optical mediums such as cells/tissues. Progress in certain diseases, such as cancer or abnormalities in the brain, is associated with the nanoscale structural alterations at basic building blocks of the cells/tissues. Elastic light scattering, especially at visible wavelengths range provides non-invasive ways to probe the cells/tissues up to nanoscale level. Therefore, a mesoscopic physics-based open light scattering technique with added finer focusing, partial wave spectroscopy (PWS), is developed to probe nanoscale changes. Then, molecular-specific light localization technique, a close scattering …

Development And Evaluation Of Ground And Aerial Robotic Systems In Commercial Poultry Houses, Pratik Parajuli
Theses and Dissertations
The live production sector of the poultry industry has a growing interest in robotics. Robotics have the possibility to monitor environmental conditions, assess bird welfare, and reduce labor for farm workers and owners. However, interactions of poultry with robotic systems in commercial poultry house environments is largely unknown. Therefore, the goal of this research was to assess the effect of ground and aerial robots on bird stress using avoidance distance (AD) and fleeing speed (FS) as indirect indicators. A low-cost, autonomous robot was also developed to aid in collecting data on environmental conditions in commercial broiler houses. AD and FS …
A Zoological Spectacular: Conservation In An American Zoo, Rita Bouwens
A Zoological Spectacular: Conservation In An American Zoo, Rita Bouwens
Theses and Dissertations
Accredited US zoos aim to support wildlife conservation and educate and influence the public and create a conservation-minded community by curating immersive multispecies experiences. In this case study, I examine how zoos may practice conservation through the frameworks of biopolitics, spectacle, affect, and mainstream conservation paradigms. To conduct this research, I interviewed 10 zoo staff from the animal, education, development, and retail departments of a Midwestern zoo. Their rhetoric about zoos and how they practice conservation suggests that zoo staff aim to generate affective responses from guests by displaying animals in managed care. These affective responses that staff hope to …

Thermal Experimentation Of Pa6 And Pa66 Thermoplastic Through Transmission Laser Welding, Sarajane Hill
Theses and Dissertations
Thermoplastic welding utilizes a fiber laser to join samples that are clamped together. Laser energy is transferred through the natural sample to the interface with the opaque sample where heat energy creates a weld through conduction and radiation heat transfer modes. The overall goal of this research is to understand the effect of heat source loading on PA6 and PA66 thermoplastic materials from laser through transmission welding that is used to join natural and opaque materials. The welding process is studied through a combination of finite element simulation, experimentation, and design of experiment modeling. The results of temperature profile and …
Experimental Study Of Laminar Burning Speed And Plasma-Stabilized Flame, Saeid Zare
Experimental Study Of Laminar Burning Speed And Plasma-Stabilized Flame, Saeid Zare
Theses and Dissertations
Since being discovered, combustion of fuels, especially fossil fuels in the last centuries, has been the dominant source of energy for human life. However, over the years, the adverse effects and shortcomings caused by the vast utilization of these energy sources have been observed; the three most important of which are unreliable resources, unfavorable natural outcomes, and limited performance. Using biofuels is one of the well-established proposed solutions to the scarcity and environmental issues of fossils as they are sustainable sources of energy with acceptable and even superior combustion characteristics. As a second-generation biofuel, anisole has shown promising results with …
Relationships Between Daily Teleconnection Indices And Oklahoma Tornado Activity, Sean Gabriel Douglas
Relationships Between Daily Teleconnection Indices And Oklahoma Tornado Activity, Sean Gabriel Douglas
Theses and Dissertations
The phasing of various teleconnection patterns has been linked to variability of tornado activity in various geographic regions. These links have been used to improve long-term tornado forecast models. Oklahoma has been long-considered the center of Tornado Alley, has remained vulnerable to tornado hazards despite mitigation efforts, and as such would benefit greatly from improvements to tornado forecasting. This study compares phases of four teleconnection patterns considered to be primary climate influencers in North America (El Niño-Southern Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, Arctic Oscillation, and Pacific/North American Pattern) to tornado activity in Oklahoma. The phases of these teleconnection patterns were individually …

The Potential Of 3d Concrete Printing Technology In Landscape Architecture, Setareh Baniasadi
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing is becoming more popular as a construction technique for various design fields. 3D Concrete Printing is one type of additive manufacturing in which layers of concrete are stacked on top of each other by pushing concrete through a nozzle onto a printing bed. These layers create three-dimensional solid objects from a digital file. 3D Concrete Printing promises to be extremely beneficial for design flexibility, cost, time, safety, environmental impact, and error reduction. This study explores the potential of 3D Concrete Printing technology in landscape architecture by exploring current research, case studies, expert interviews, and design prototype documentation. The …
From Origin To Application: A Study Of Plant Orphan Genes, Seth Jordan O'Conner
From Origin To Application: A Study Of Plant Orphan Genes, Seth Jordan O'Conner
Theses and Dissertations
As sequencing technology has taken off since the late 1990's, a unique phenomenon has been observed repeatedly: genes with little to no conservation across species. For a while, the predominant theory that arose to explain these genes was duplication and subsequent evolution of conserved genes. While this theory can explain some, still many genes have now been proven to arrive de novo - from previously non-coding DNA. This work further investigates the origins of these de novo evolved genes and their practical application relevance in crop biotechnology. This work demonstrates the dynamic nature of plant mitochondrial genomes between even closely …
Weedy Rice (Oryza Sativa Ssp.): An Untapped Genetic Resource For Abiotic Stress Tolerant Traits For Rice Improvement, Shandrea D. Stallworth
Weedy Rice (Oryza Sativa Ssp.): An Untapped Genetic Resource For Abiotic Stress Tolerant Traits For Rice Improvement, Shandrea D. Stallworth
Theses and Dissertations
Rice (Oryza sativa) is the staple food for more than 3.5 billion people worldwide. As the population continues to grow, rice yield will need to increase by 1% every year for the next 30 years to keep up with the growth. In the US, Arkansas accounts for more than 50% of rice production. Over the last 68 years, rice production has continued to grow in Mississippi, placing it in fourth place after Arkansas, Louisiana, and California. Due to increasing rice acreage, regionally and worldwide, the need to develop abiotic stress-tolerant rice has increased. Unfortunately, current rice breeding programs lack genetic …
Impacts Of Season, Single Prescribed Burn, And Winged Elm (Ulmus Alata) Encroachment On Fuel Dynamics In An Upland Oak Stand In Northern Mississippi, Shawn C. Woodard
Impacts Of Season, Single Prescribed Burn, And Winged Elm (Ulmus Alata) Encroachment On Fuel Dynamics In An Upland Oak Stand In Northern Mississippi, Shawn C. Woodard
Theses and Dissertations
In north Mississippi, I evaluated fuel loads in the late dormant season and after leaf fall in unburned areas and after a dormant season burn. Fuel loads beneath winged elm (Ulmus alata) were assessed to determine if this shade-tolerant species impacts fine fuel loads in the area immediately near its bole. I found leaf litter fuel loads are higher after leaf fall suggesting that burns conducted closer to leaf fall may have increased burn intensity. Burning reduced leaf litter fuels and exposed mineral soil which returned to pre-burn levels following leaf fall. Declines in duff layer fuels were not evident …
What Makes A Hurricane Fall Apart? A Multi-Platform Assessment Of Tropical Cyclone Weakening By, Sofia M. De Solo
What Makes A Hurricane Fall Apart? A Multi-Platform Assessment Of Tropical Cyclone Weakening By, Sofia M. De Solo
Theses and Dissertations
Tropical cyclone (TC) rapid intensity change negatively impacts forecast error. Many studies have investigated rapid intensification, but fewer explore rapid weakening, particularly with aircraft observations due to fewer weakening TCs being flown. This study assesses factors contributing to the rapid weakening of Hurricane Lorenzo (2019) and the comparatively slower weakening of Hurricane Florence (2018) using aircraft observations and satellite-based products to enhance understanding of processes related to TC weakening. Intrusion of environmental dry air into Lorenzo's core under persistent moderate vertical wind shear, in conjunction with quickly decreasing SSTs, largely contributed to the TC's rapid weakening. Conversely, SSTs were higher …

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Structure-Property Relations Of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (Swcnt), Partially Unzipped Carbon Nanotubes (Pucnt), And Damage Evolution In Nanocomposites Of Swcnt With Polyethylene (Swcnt-Pe), Sultana Abdullah Ababtin
Theses and Dissertations
This study employs the Modified Embedded Atom Method with Bond Order (MEAM-BO) atomic potential as first used to capture single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) properties accurately. We updated the MEAM-BO potential parameters to produce a MEAM-BO* potential for the SWCNT system. Calculating the wavenumber of the radial breathing mode (RBM), elastic properties, and folding energy (DELTA E) of SWCNT which are all associated with bond curvature was considered. Interestingly, MEAM-BO* including the SWCNT data base, improved the previous fit of the C-H system. Further discussed is how we constructed five different partially unzipped carbon nanotubes (PUCNT) and investigate the mechanical properties …
The Effect Of Pain Tolerance Feedback On Human Aggression, Suzanne C. Amadi
The Effect Of Pain Tolerance Feedback On Human Aggression, Suzanne C. Amadi
Theses and Dissertations
Pain is a sensory experience associated with physical discomfort that is influenced by cognition and emotion and has been linked to an increased risk for aggression. The purpose of the current study was to examine the association between pain and aggression under controlled laboratory conditions using both experimental and non-experimental approaches. The aims of the study were two-fold. First, to manipulate perceived pain tolerance via faux feedback and then observe whether aggression differs as a function of this pain perception manipulation using a laboratory analogue of aggression. Second, to examine whether self-ratings of pain sensitivity and behavioral measures of pain …
The Impact Of Family-Friendly Workplace Practices On Turnover Intentions Of Non-Family Employees In Family Firms: A Conservation Of Resources Approach, Taewoo Kim
Theses and Dissertations
Non-family employees are indispensable resources for family firms as they grow. However, despite the recent scholarly attention toward non-family employees, it is still not clear how such important human resources should be managed and/or retained in family firms. To add to the limited body of knowledge on non-family employees working at family firms, this dissertation highlights the role of family-friendly workplace practices in preventing turnover intentions of non-family employees based on conservation of resources theory. Drawing on a sample of 116 dyad data (family business owner - non-family employee), this dissertation shows that family-friendly workplace practices prevent turnover intentions of …
Evaluation And Mechanisms Of Host-Plant Resistance To The Wireworm-Diabrotica-Systena Complex In Sweetpotatoes (Ipomoea Batatas) And A Commercial Kairomone Lure In Diabroticites, Thomas J. Douglas
Theses and Dissertations
An evaluation of host-plant resistance to the wireworm-Diabrotica-Systena (WDS) complex of root-feeding insects in sweetpotatoes was performed on a total of 15 cultivars and advanced lines over the course of 4 years (2017-2020). It was found that sweetpotatoes varieties can differ significantly in amount of damage incurred. Several mechanisms of resistance were proposed and tested: periderm toughness, dry weight percentage, and volatile organic chemical defenses. No significant difference was found amongst the varieties tested concerning the physical properties. Chemical analysis was limited in scope but did show some differences between a susceptible variety when compared to a resistant variety in …
Using Sentiment Analysis To Craft A Narrative Of The Covid-19 Pandemic From The Perspective Of Social Media, Taylor Breanna Ray
Using Sentiment Analysis To Craft A Narrative Of The Covid-19 Pandemic From The Perspective Of Social Media, Taylor Breanna Ray
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, people have turned to social media to share their experiences with the coronavirus and their feelings regarding subjects like social distancing, mask-wearing, COVID-19 vaccines, and other related topics. The publicly available nature of these social media posts provides researchers the chance to obtain a consensus on an array of issues, topics, people, and entities. For the COVID-19 pandemic, this is valuable information that can prepare communities and governing bodies for future epidemics or events of a similar magnitude. However, clearly defining such a consensus can be difficult, especially if researchers want to limit the amount of …

Patterns Of Carnivore Competition, Time-To-Kill, And Predation Risk On White-Tailed Deer Fawns In A Multi-Predator Landscape, Tyler R. Petroelje
Theses and Dissertations
Identifying factors influencing kill rates or predation risk is crucial to relate predator effects on prey populations. In multi-predator landscapes, some predators may also perceive predation risk which may not only influence their distributions but also their effects on prey populations across landscapes. In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) exist in a multi-predator landscape which includes black bears (Ursus americanus), bobcats (Lynx rufus), coyotes (Canis latrans), and gray wolves (C. lupus). The objectives of this research were to examine spatial relationships among predators and their prey by identifying: 1) competition between wolves and coyotes, 2) …
A Structured Approach To Water Management Of A Multiuse Reservoir, Victoria R. Starnes
A Structured Approach To Water Management Of A Multiuse Reservoir, Victoria R. Starnes
Theses and Dissertations
Water resources for Bluff Lake in Mississippi are managed to achieve objectives related to waterfowl, waterbirds, fish, anglers, and Paddlefish (Polyodon spathula). Annually, the reservoir undergoes a nine-stage seasonal drawdown and re-inundation to improve waterfowl habitat. In addition, weekly discharges are released from the water control structure to encourage Paddlefish spawning and migration each spring. However, additional discharges throughout the year may provide additional passage opportunities. In this study, multiple discharge states were evaluated to identify optimal water releases during each drawdown period given reservoir objectives. First, I developed a hydrodynamic model to predict daily changes in lake volume. Second, …

Theses and Dissertations
Manure nitrogen in dairy cattle represents a substantial economic and environmental loss to the industry. Current strategies used to improve N efficiency (Neff) have shown limited progress and thus, warrant more effective approaches. Considering that the gastrointestinal bacterial community has been associated with various phenotypes of economic importance, the objective of this project was to evaluate the associations between the rumen and fecal bacteriomes and Neff phenotypes in dairy cows. Results showed similarities in the overall bacterial community composition and structure of cows differing in Neff. However, the relative abundance of specific bacterial ASV differed between low and high Neff …
Kinetic Spectroscopic Quantification Of Biomarkers In Practical Samples, Weiyu Peng
Kinetic Spectroscopic Quantification Of Biomarkers In Practical Samples, Weiyu Peng
Theses and Dissertations
Kinetic spectroscopic quantification refers to a subset of chromogenic (CG) and fluorogenic (FG) assays that deduce analyte concentration based on the UV-vis or fluorescence signal obtained during the CG/FG reaction processes. Existing kinetic spectroscopic quantification are based predominantly on reactions that can be approximated as a first-order process. Presented in this thesis is the kinetic spectroscopic quantification that uses higher order CG/FG reactions where the overall reaction can be approximated as combination of two sequential first-order processes. Included in chapter one is the theoretical model and several proof-of-concept applications. This model analyte is malondialdehyde (MDA), a lipid peroxidation biomarker of …
Bioenergy Crop Production's Impact On Water Quality In The Mississippi River Basin Using The Benefit Transfer Approach., William Tillman White
Bioenergy Crop Production's Impact On Water Quality In The Mississippi River Basin Using The Benefit Transfer Approach., William Tillman White
Theses and Dissertations
Biofuel production-driven land-use change in agricultural land can have impacts on ecosystem services. Since there is no planned mandate after the Renewable Fuel Standard, there are questions about what implications will future land-use changes have on water quality and how do water quality changes, resulting from potential bioenergy scenarios, affect changes in people's well-being? To answer these questions, I will estimate the value of the predicted changes in water quality under biofuel policy scenarios in counties inside the Mississippi River Basin. From this study, I found that as the percent of land-use changes increase across each county, water quality decreased. …
Existence And Multiplicity Of Positive Solutions For One-Dimensional P-Laplacian With Nonlinear And Intergral Boundary Conditions, Xiao Wang
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we study the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions to classes of one-dimensional singular p-Laplacian problems with nonlinear and intergral boundary conditions when the reaction termis p-superlinear or p-sublinear at infinity. In the p-superlinear case, we prove the existence of a large positive solution when a parameter is small and if, in addition, the reaction term satisfies a concavity-like condition at the origin, the existence of two positive solutions for a certain range of the parameter. In the p-sublinear case, we establish the existence of a large positive solution when a parameter is large. We also investigate …
A Machine Learning Approach To Predicting Seafloor Properties And Their Application In Estimating A Global Methane Hydrate Inventory, Taylor Runyan Lee
A Machine Learning Approach To Predicting Seafloor Properties And Their Application In Estimating A Global Methane Hydrate Inventory, Taylor Runyan Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Seafloor properties, including total organic carbon (TOC) and the vertical thickness (isochores) of geological units, are sparsely measured on a global scale and spatial interpolation (prediction) techniques are often used as a proxy for observations. Previous geospatial interpolations of seafloor TOC exhibit gaps where little to no observed data exists. Recent machine learning techniques, based upon a suite of geophysical and geochemical properties (e.g., seafloor biomass, porosity, distance from coast) show promise in making globally complete, comprehensive, and statistically robust geospatial seafloor predictions. Here I apply a non-parametric (i.e., data-driven) machine learning (ML) algorithm, specifically k-nearest neighbors (kNN), to estimate …
