Good For Baby, Good For Mom: The Determinants Of Breastfeeding Initiation And Continuation Among Working Women In The Midwest U.S., Qingyu Jiang, Holly Hatton-Bowers, Julie A. Tippens, Soo-Young Hong, Kara Kohel

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Various factors support or hinder women’s decision to initiate and continue breastfeeding, particularly among working women. Currently, limited literature investigates breastfeeding experiences among working women across time. The purpose of this study was to gain nuanced insight into working women’s breastfeeding experiences during the first year of their infant’s life. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with working women residing in a Midwestern state (N = 25) across two time points (when infants were 3-4 months and 9-12 months). Results showed that twenty-one working women initiated and continued breastfeeding when their infants were 3-4 months old, and 14 women in the …

Evaluating The Feasibility Of A Future Care Planning Program With Older Adults, Jeong Eun Lee, Dahee Kim, Eva Kahana, Boaz Kahana

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Despite potential health care needs, many older adults do not make concrete plans about future care in late life. Prior community programs have not addressed this need via Cooperative Extension systems. To address these gaps, we developed and evaluated the pilot study program, Future Care Planning, designed to help older adults plan for their own personal, health, and environmental care. The Plan Ahead program (Plan Ahead) consists of two sessions implemented over two weeks to teach older adults to plan for their future care across multiple domains, including health communication, aging in place, and end-of-life discussion. Barriers To Becoming Case Certified As Seen By Agriculture Educators, Kristin Witte, Nathan W. Conner, Bryan A. Reiling, Mark A. Balschweid, Christopher T. Stripling

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

There is a need to improve science comprehension in the United States. Incorporating scientific principles into the study of food production provides context to engage youth in STEM education. The Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) is an inquiry-based program that stimulates scientific engagement. While agriscience teachers believe in the concept, less than 20% are certified in Nebraska to teach CASE. Twenty-five active agriscience teachers, who were not CASE certified, individually discussed their reluctance to become CASE certified. Most research participants had a positive view of CASE but were concerned about the apparent stringent program structure. They questioned individualizing the …

Texas 4-H Members’ Sense Of Community Engagement And Attachment, Emily R. Perdue, James R. Lindner, Gary E. Briers

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Previous researchers found that youth in 4-H were four times more likely to actively contribute to their communities, two times more likely to be civically active, and five times more likely to graduate from college than non-4- H members. In addition, youth who were more actively involved in community engagement tended to perform at an increased academic achievement level and were more likely to go to college, according to previous studies. The results of the research reported here described participants’ community service and engagement activities both in and outside of 4-H and their attachment to their home communities. Respondents were …

Latino Volunteerism In The 4-H Youth Development Program, Steven M. Worker, Maria G. Fábregas Janeiro, Lynn Schmitt-Mcquitty

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Nationally, the 4-H Youth Development Program utilizes more than 350,000 adult volunteers annually, and 25% of the nation’s K-12 students identify as Hispanic or Latino; however, there is a dearth of published literature on Latino volunteerism in the 4-H Youth Development Program. Developmental relationships, a critical component of realizing youth development outcomes, are enhanced when adults and young people share cultural values and identity markers. The Cooperative Extension System has an obligation to reach a diverse audience and ensure program participation reflects the demographics of the communities in which youth live. We review the literature on Latino volunteerism in 4-H, …

Using 4-H Animal Science Programming To Improve One Health, Lacie Ashby, April Barczewski, Ashley Travis, Chris Anderson, Sheryl Bennett

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Zoonoses, or diseases that can be transferred between humans and animals, such as variant swine influenza, avian influenza A viruses, and coronaviruses, comprise a large percentage of all newly identified and existing infectious diseases (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). As a result, there is an ever-growing need for a One Health approach towards preventing and controlling zoonotic diseases. To better manage these public health risks at the human-animal-environment interface, Maryland 4-H and Maryland Department of Health initiated a statewide, multi-agency collaborative partnership. Through steps taken to collectively develop and implement long-term strategies to prevent future variant influenza outbreaks …

In March 2020, work at libraries nationwide was upended as COVID safety measures closed public buildings and sent librarians home, often with little support or guidance as to what they could or should do during lockdown. Thankfully, the Digital Initiatives and Web Services team at Mississippi State University Libraries had already laid a foundation that made the transition to remote work quick and easy. From our home offices, we accomplished more work than we ever had in the library: a full redesign and deployment of the MSU Libraries website; usability testing and discussions with library faculty, staff, and student assistants; …

Critical Theory, Fascism, And Antifascism: Reflections From A Damaged Polity, Bradley Macdonald, Katherine E. Young

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

The presidency of Trump has produced an increasing sense that we are possibly moving into a period of fascism in the United States. In this essay, we wish to look closely at conditions which define this current political period by taking seriously Max Horkheimer’s plea to see the necessary relation of capitalism to protofascist potentials and fascist aspirations within our liberal democratic context. Drawing upon the work of Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, and others, we will look more closely at the particular political economic conditions that underlie the development of our one-dimensional society, in which “totalitarian” economic-technical control, rampant consumerism, …

A Systematic Review Of Research On Rural College Access Since 2000, Stephanie Sowl, Andrew Crain Aug 2021

A Systematic Review Of Research On Rural College Access Since 2000, Stephanie Sowl, Andrew Crain

The Rural Educator

Aligning with the NREA's "college and career readiness" research priority, this article presents a systematic literature review of 134 publications regarding the state of rural college access and choice research between the years 2000 and 2020. We use Perna's (2006) college choice model to guide our comprehensive summary of current themes as well as remaining challenges and opportunities. We find that publications generally failed to articulate the rural context in sufficient detail, that studies in the Appalachian region were overrepresented, and that a majority of publications focused on the roles of rural habitus or K-12 and community context in shaping …

Meeting Students Where They Are: Trauma-Informed Approaches In Rural Schools, Maria Frankland Aug 2021

Meeting Students Where They Are: Trauma-Informed Approaches In Rural Schools, Maria Frankland

The Rural Educator

Twenty-five percent of U.S. schoolchildren attend a rural school. Yet, rural school issues are typically subsumed by debates focused on urban problems and the misguided notion of ample resources available for their remediation. These assumptions belie the reality of the spatial mismatch that exists for rural schools, especially around mental health supports. Adverse childhood experiences and trauma disproportionately affect rural schoolchildren, putting them at greater risk of academic underachievement and other negative throughout the lifespan. Trauma-informed approaches in rural schools may mitigate the effects of childhood adversity and help close achievement gaps for rural students. Rural schools and students have …

Relatively Good News Amid Covid-19, Jesse Moon Longhurst, Michael Thier

The Rural Educator

This study examined publicly available data from The Institution of Education Sciences (IES) survey of school leaders concerning modes of instructions offered and subgroups prioritized during the Covid-19 pandemic. We asked: Do national data regarding instructional modes (i.e., remote, hybrid, and in-person) during the Covid-19 pandemic reveal different approaches of U.S. elementary and secondary schools in rural areas versus peer institutions in cities, suburbs, and towns? Our analysis showed that schools in rural areas are more readily and equitably offering in-person instruction than schools in suburbs and cities, particularly in regard to students of color. Additionally, we found that rural …

The essay then details the writing portion and how it has changed over time. The essay ends with a reflection of my work and choices.

What We Know And Where To Go: A Systematic Review Of The Rural Student College And Career Readiness Literature And Future Directions For The Field, J. Kessa Roberts, Phillip Grant Aug 2021

What We Know And Where To Go: A Systematic Review Of The Rural Student College And Career Readiness Literature And Future Directions For The Field, J. Kessa Roberts, Phillip Grant

The Rural Educator

College and career readiness has become a national education policy priority. With more than 9.3 million rural students in the United States, the college and career readiness of rural students is a warranted priority for rural education researchers. Using a combination of Conley’s (2012) college and career readiness model, Perna’s (2006) nested model of college choice, and Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent et al., 2014), we systematically reviewed and analyzed the extant literature on rural students’ college and career readiness. In addition to providing a comprehensive discussion of the prominent themes in the literature, we provide recommendations for future research …

Conceptions Of Choice, Equity, & Rurality In Educational Research, James Bridgeforth, Kate Kennedy, Jacob Alonso, Taylor Enoch-Stevens

The Rural Educator

School choice is often thought of as a rural issue, however, rural communities have also engaged in forms of school choice decision-making. Limited research has explored rural school choice and there is a need for further exploration of rurality and school choice. This review is not intended to advocate for an expansion of school choice policies. Rather, we call for additional research that seeks to better understand how school choice policies are currently operating in rural areas and their implications for educational equity. In this piece, we review the existing literature on school choice and rural education, provide key recommendations, …

An Analysis Of Human Gait Under Slippery Conditions Using Opensim's Musculoskeletal Simulations, Phong K. Phan Aug 2021

An Analysis Of Human Gait Under Slippery Conditions Using Opensim's Musculoskeletal Simulations, Phong K. Phan

Theses and Dissertations

Computational simulations of gait under abnormal conditions provide insights into the actions of muscles, its relationships with external reaction forces and motions of the body during slips, trips, and falls - the leading causes of occupational injuries worldwide. OpenSimTM, an open-source motion simulation software, was utilized to construct musculoskeletal structures and create dynamic simulations of body movements. Gaits of eighteen subjects were studied to extract experimentally difficult-to-obtained variables under slippery conditions. The joint angles and moments of hip, knee, ankle and the forces of four prime muscle groups were analyzed for body corrective movements during slip events. Besides, the connections …

Cfd Investigation Of The Drag Effects On An Aircraft By Means Of Altering The Wing Or Canard Size And Position, Taylor Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The stability and maneuverability of aircraft are some key factors for selecting the locations of wings or canards on the fuselage. Another important variable that is considered in the design of an aircraft is drag force which impacts fuel efficiency. This research investigates how drag force of a surrogate aircraft is affected by the placement of the wing or canard along the fuselage. Unique for this study is the placement of the canard in the fuselage nose region, with the leading edge upstream of the nose, resembling the shape of a hammerhead shark's head. When the leading edge of all …

Using Machine Learning Techniques To Model The Process-Structure-Property Relationship In Additive Manufacturing, Seyyed Hadi Seifi Shishavan

Theses and Dissertations

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a novel fabrication technique capable of producing highly complex parts. Nevertheless, a major challenge is improving the quality of the fabricated parts. While there are several ways of approaching this problem, developing data-driven methods that use AM process signatures to identify these part anomalies can be rapidly applied to improve the overall part quality during the build. The objective of this dissertation is to model multiple processes within the AM to quantify the quality of the parts and reduced the uncertainty due to variation in input process parameters. The objective of first study is to build …
