This handwritten letter, dated December 17, 1860, is from Abraham Lincoln to G. N. P. Gale Esq., The letter reads "Dear Sir--Herewith I send you my autograph which you request. Yours Truly, A. Lincoln" The letter is located between the unnumbered pages, 5 pages after the title page. The letter is written on a small card that has what appears to be glue stains along the edges. This note was found tipped into volume one of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. Nicolay and John Hay.

Sholinh goes on to say that he believes that they are all responsible gentlemen and should be able to hand this business and all do what is right but that if they cannot, he is willing to let the courts decide. He assures Darden that he intends to address Darden's concerns and will make sure that a lawful title is made.

Sholinh assures Darden that the matter will be settled as he is intent on being a responsible gentleman. Sholinh concedes that the title can be handled in the manner in which Darden suggested.

The letter informs Schurtz of Well's travel plans to Hartford. the back of the letter has Well's name and the date on either end. The letter is written on Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign letterhead with the image of an eagle with expanded wings in the center and the list of the Republic National Committee below it. The pages are stained and creased with some tearing along the right and bottom edges.
