These copied pages from the Fairfax County Deed Book Liber A-1, 1742-1746 contain a deed between Hugh Cotswell and William Williams for one thousand, seven hundred and forty acres in Truro Parish, Fairfax County, Virginia. Handwritten notes on the margin and at the top of the first page of the deed indicated that Myrtis Wineman does not believe the William Williams named in the deed is her ancestor and why.

Charles Beauclerk, natural son of King Charles I and his mistress Nell Gwynne was given the title of Duke of St. Albans in 1684. With the title came land, and the wild game living on it. Letters patent were legal documents normally issued by a head of state to grant something to the recipient, such as money, a title, or a right. This one was issued to William Blackstone (Blaxton), of Gibside in County Durham, squire to Sir Nicholas Tempest, Knight, also of County Durham, and a Mr. Chapman, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, during the reign of James I/IV. The purpose of the document is unknown. William Blackstone went on to become the first European settler of Boston and Rhode Island, in 1625. Written entirely by hand on paper-thin vellum, it is beautifully illustrated, and very small. The complete text probably fit into its owner�s pocket.
