This pamphlet is a german biography by an intimate Lincoln associate, dedicated to Robert Todd Lincoln, Dr. Canisius (1827-1885), a German-American immigrant living in Springfield, was engaged by Lincoln to establish a pro-Republican German-language newspaper for the 1860 campaign, using a printing press Lincoln had purchased for the purpose. Canisius complied, the result being the Illinois Staats-Anzeiger, no copies of which are known to have survived. Canisius was instrumental in getting Lincoln's endorsement of voting rights for immigrants, and Lincoln's letter to him on the subject was widely reprinted in the press, and was influential in securing German-American support for …
