Evaluating The Role Of The Bovine Vaginal Microbiome In Neonatal And Maternal Health Outcomes, Riley D. Messman
Evaluating The Role Of The Bovine Vaginal Microbiome In Neonatal And Maternal Health Outcomes, Riley D. Messman
Theses and Dissertations
The dam vaginal microbiota is the first major microbial inoculating community within the neonate. The composition of the dam vaginal microbiota has implications in calf commensal microbiota development. Alterations of the dam microbial community prior to parturition could alter inoculating communities and immune responses in both the dam and calf. Thus, authors aimed to elucidate the microbial community composition of the bovine dam vaginal and calf nasal microbiota post-partum after utilizing betadine lavages (BL). The dam vaginal and calf nasal microbial communities and immune responses were evaluated at 0-, 15-, 30- and 60-day post-partum. Microbiota composition of the dam haircoat, …

Designing Bioinspired Materials With Tunable Structures And Properties From Natural And Synthetic Polymers, Anandavalli Varadarajan
Designing Bioinspired Materials With Tunable Structures And Properties From Natural And Synthetic Polymers, Anandavalli Varadarajan
Theses and Dissertations
Biological systems are composed of complex materials which are responsible for performing various functions, such as providing structural support, mobility, functional adaptation to the environment, damage repair, and self-healing. These complex materials display excellent mechanical properties and can rapidly adapt to external stimuli. Thus, nature inspires in terms of source materials, functions, and designs to develop new-generation structural and functional materials. Polymers (natural or synthetic) are excellent sources of developing materials to mimic the functions of soft segments in biological systems. This dissertation focuses on synthesizing and characterizing two different materials with tunable structures and properties: complexes from natural polysaccharides …

Isolation And Culture Of Epichloё For Reinfection Of Endophyte-Free Southeastern Wildrye (Elymus Glabriflorus), Bryna Joann Haile
Theses and Dissertations
Mutualistic relationships between endophytic fungi and grasses have shown to improve the hardiness of the host. This relationship is common in grasses, including North American native grasses that are important in both forage and grassland ecosystems. Elymus species, such as Canada wildrye (CWR), commonly host the endophytic fungi, Epichloё, while southeastern wildrye (SEWR) may not. In this study, seed of CWR and seed and leaves from local SEWR were assessed for endophyte infection. Infection status was confirmed via histological analysis of seed squashes and leaf peels. Presence/absence of endophyte was determined by scanning for mycelia within seed and between leaf …

Timing Is Everything: Impacts Of Firing Technique And Season On Plant Communities In The Southeastern United States, Luke Michael Resop
Timing Is Everything: Impacts Of Firing Technique And Season On Plant Communities In The Southeastern United States, Luke Michael Resop
Theses and Dissertations
Prescribed fire is a common land management tool in the southeastern United States. Historical fires occurred primarily in the growing season, but modern day prescribed fire is commonly restricted to the dormant season. Plant community responses to various fire regimes are relatively unknown, and managers require information on how fire regimes impact plant communities. To address these limitations, I studied the impacts of March and June fire on plant communities. Results indicated various woody midstory species respond differently to fire season and community response is driven by species composition. In another study, I examined impacts of February, May-June, and September-October …

Applying Push-Pull-Mooring Model To Investigate Non-Malicious Workarounds Behavior, Nawaf Rasheed Aljohani
Applying Push-Pull-Mooring Model To Investigate Non-Malicious Workarounds Behavior, Nawaf Rasheed Aljohani
Theses and Dissertations
More than half of the violations of information systems security policies are initiated by non-malicious activities of insiders. To investigate these non-malicious activities, we utilized the theory of workaround and argued that the application of neutralization techniques impacts the use of workarounds. We built our model using three theories: the theory of workaround, push-pull-mooring theory, and techniques of neutralization. We identified the elements of workarounds related to non-malicious violations and proposed a theoretical perspective using the push-pull-mooring theory to investigate non-malicious workarounds empirically. We propose that non-malicious activities of insiders can be seen as a switching behavior, with push factors …
Small Area Estimation Of County-Level Forest Attributes Using Forest Inventory Data And Remotely Sensed Auxiliary Information, Okikiola Michael Alegbeleye
Small Area Estimation Of County-Level Forest Attributes Using Forest Inventory Data And Remotely Sensed Auxiliary Information, Okikiola Michael Alegbeleye
Theses and Dissertations
The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program of the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service collects forest inventory data that provide estimates with reasonable accuracy at the national scale. However, for smaller domains, these estimates are often not as accurate due to the small sample size. Small area estimation improves the accuracy of the estimates at smaller domains by relying on auxiliary information. This study compared direct (FIA estimates), indirect (multiple linear regression), and composite estimators (Fay-Herriot) using auxiliary information derived from Landsat and Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) to obtain county-level estimates of forest attributes namely total and …

Theses and Dissertations
Interest in the use of mass timber in building and construction is growing worldwide, this is due to the structural integrity and reduced environmental footprint of timber-based structures. Concerns associated with the biological and environmental degradation of mass timber necessitate the development of adequate protection strategies to ensure the durability of these products. Preservative treatment is a proven technique that increases the durability and performance of wood in-service and can also be applied to large-sized timber panels such as cross-laminated timber (CLT). Therefore, this study focused on investigating the feasibility of treating prefabricated 3- and 5-layer CLT panels with Copper-azole …
Heat And Mass Transfer Modeling Of High-Temperature Moving-Bed Thermochemical Reactors, David Korba
Heat And Mass Transfer Modeling Of High-Temperature Moving-Bed Thermochemical Reactors, David Korba
Theses and Dissertations
With the global deployment of renewable energy generation at record rates, clean energy is steadily becoming competitive with its fossil-fuel counterparts. However, further expansion is limited by the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, wave, etc.), which typically do not match with daily and seasonal variations of global (and local) energy demand. Thermochemical energy storage (TCES) has demonstrated strong potential in being a technological pathway to provide on-demand process heat and handle the intrinsic variations in renewable energy generation and energy demand. TCES works on the premise of excess renewable heat driving an endothermic reduction reaction, in which …

Metabolic Adaptation Of Staphylococcus Aureus Pathogenesis And Therapeutic Approach In Diabetic Foot Ulcers., Carol L. Baker
Theses and Dissertations
37.3 million Americans (11.2% of the US population) currently have Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with over 1.5 million new cases being diagnosed each year. The multifactorial etiology of the patient having neuropathy, overweight/obesity, foot deformities, ischemia, and infection leads to a condition called diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). One in six patients with a DFU will require amputation with infected DFUs have a 155-fold increased risk of amputation. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common bacteria isolated from severe DFU infections that require amputation. Interestingly, diabetics are more heavily colonized with S. aureus compared to non-diabetics suggesting a unique advantageous adaptation …

Providing a sufficient level of personalized feedback on students' current level of strategic knowledge within the context of the natural programming environment through IDE-based learning analytics would transform learning outcomes for introductory programming students. However, providing sufficient insight into the programming process was previously inaccessible due to the need for more complex and scalable data collection methods and metrics with a wider variety for understanding programming metacognition and the full programming process.
This research developed a custom-built web-based IDE and event compression system to investigate two of the five components of a five-dimensional model of cognition for programming skill estimation …
The Cosolvent And Association Effect On Polymer Behaviors, Xiangyu Zhang
The Cosolvent And Association Effect On Polymer Behaviors, Xiangyu Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
The blending or mixing is extensively utilized in diverse processes of polymers to bring about advantageous properties, but the behavior becomes intriguing when associations are involved and multi-solvents are used. Explanations based on chemistry-specific arguments are less than satisfactory in abstracting essential features, and lack the general applicability across various systems. So, this work focuses on capturing the physical force governing the phenomenon of interest by using a generic model. Highly non-trivial behaviors of polymers are often observed in multi-solvent solutions. It is known that polymers swell and dissolve in good solvents, while they tend to collapse and aggregate in …

Tuning The Metal/Acid Functionalities In Hzsm-5 For Efficient Dehydroaromatization, Genwei Chen
Tuning The Metal/Acid Functionalities In Hzsm-5 For Efficient Dehydroaromatization, Genwei Chen
Theses and Dissertations
The increasing production of natural gas liquids attracts both academia and industry to develop on-purpose techniques converting those light alkanes to value-added chemicals. Dehydroaromatization is an alternative path for light alkane conversion to produce aromatics but still lacks active and stable catalysts. This work aims at the development of efficient dehydroaromatization catalysts by tuning the metal/acid bifunctionality of the Pt/HZSM-5 catalyst. Additionally, through co-processing light alkane with ammonia during the dehydroaromatization process, this study also proposes a new reaction system that could directly link the C-N bond for nitrile synthesis.
The results suggested that the activity, selectivity, and stability of …
Self-Referential Processing And Depression: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Amanda Collins
Self-Referential Processing And Depression: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Amanda Collins
Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive theories of depression, including Beck’s Cognitive Theory, suggest that depressed individuals hold negative schemas about themselves and their environment. These negative schemas may influence the extent to which depressed individuals process positivity. Reward Devaluation Theory posits that depressed individuals avoid and devalue positivity. This suggests that depressed individuals may be less likely to hold positive schemas, or may be more likely to associate positivity with negativity. Previous meta-analytic reviews suggest that this is potentially the case, but have not assessed for self-referential stimuli. Self-referential encoding and recall tasks assess for self-schemas and may give further insight into how depressed …
Evaluating The Immunogenicity Of Colonization Proteins Of S. Pneumoniae For Identification Of Vaccine Candidates, Isidora Fereday
Evaluating The Immunogenicity Of Colonization Proteins Of S. Pneumoniae For Identification Of Vaccine Candidates, Isidora Fereday
Theses and Dissertations
Streptococcus pneumoniae is typically an asymptomatic colonizer of the upper respiratory tract but can cause invasive disease in susceptible populations. Pneumococcal vaccines which are currently in use have failed to significantly reduce colonization by S. pneumoniae. To control invasive pneumococcal disease, novel strategies must be utilized. One such strategy is to reduce or eradicate colonization by pneumococcus. Supplementary vaccination with pneumococcal proteins important for colonization could serve to prime the immune system against these targets. This study serves as an initial step towards identification of crucial pneumococcal colonization proteins which may previously have been uncharacterized. Assessing the immune reactivity …
Metacrisis, Not Civil War: Examining France’S Unrest In June/July 2023, Thomas G. Chevalier
Metacrisis, Not Civil War: Examining France’S Unrest In June/July 2023, Thomas G. Chevalier
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
In this commentary, I examine the urban riots that took place in France at the end of June and early July 2023 to assess the levels of violence and the response of the French government. I argue that the unrest did not represent the brink of a civil war, as wrongly claimed by dark journalistic assessments and dominant right-wing political discourses, but pertained to a more profound condition of metacrisis (a state where a crisis enters a crisis of its own and a dangerous situation of social strife ensues). Tracing recent discourses and imaginaries of civil war in France and …

Cost Of Care Conversations: Perspectives From Rural Health Care Providers And Older Adult Patients, Karen L. Franck, Christopher Sneed, Lisa Washburn, Ann A. Berry, Victoria Niederhauser
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Older adults often struggle with health care costs. Cost of care (CoC) conversations are conversations between health care providers and patients to discuss direct and indirect costs associated with health care. These conversations have been found to increase patient compliance, but patients and health care providers often do not have these discussions. This article describes a project to provide Extension education to encourage CoC conversations for older adults and health care providers in rural counties in a southern state. To inform educational material development, 125 older adults and 51 health care providers completed surveys about their cost-related barriers to health …

Predicting Covid-19 Risk Information-Seeking Behaviors In Relation To Food Purchasing Concerns, Taylor Ruth, Quisto Settle, Joy N. Rumble
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
COVID-19 drastically altered the way consumers shopped for food as they had to adhere to recommendations for social distancing. However, the public has been divided across political parties in their assessment of the severity of COVID-19 and must filter through misinformation related to the pandemic to make informed choices for personal safety. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the influences on Oklahoma consumers’ risk information-seeking behaviors about COVID-19 within the context of risk perceptions while shopping for food. The Risk Information Seek and Processing (RISP) model and cultural cognition provided the framework for this study. An online …
Research Informed Guidelines For Couple And Relationship Education Programs With Arab American Immigrant Couples, Sarah Almalki, Lawrence Ganong
Research Informed Guidelines For Couple And Relationship Education Programs With Arab American Immigrant Couples, Sarah Almalki, Lawrence Ganong
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
In this paper, we review the characteristics of Arab immigrants and propose guidelines for couple and relationship education (CRE) programs with Arab immigrant couples. Arab immigrants are a heterogeneous group, yet they share common cultural characteristics and family values that are essential to understand when working with them. Generally, CRE programs with immigrated Arabs should be mindful of (1) strongly valued religious beliefs, (2) extended family as a primary source of support and marital problem-solving, (3) the tendency to follow gender-based roles and responsibilities, and (4) Arabic language and communication norms. Family educators and practitioners who work with recently immigrated …
