The Effects Of Mechanical Strain On Vascular Calcification And The Canonical Wnt Pathway, Hannah E. Douglas
The Effects Of Mechanical Strain On Vascular Calcification And The Canonical Wnt Pathway, Hannah E. Douglas
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease is a significant health crisis, representing 32% of deaths worldwide in 2019. Vascular calcification (VC), a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, is a regulated biomineralization process whose exact mechanisms are unknown. Additionally, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) significantly contribute to VC by undergoing a phenotypic switch and differentiating into osteoblast-like cells. When factors like hypertension cause disturbed laminar flow in the body’s vasculature, the mechanical stress promotes the phenotypic switch and calcification of VSMCs via mechanotransduction. VC is also induced by the Wnt pathway, which is activated via mineral imbalance and mechanical stimulation. However, the exact mechanisms behind …
Determining The Best Indicators For Targeted Selective Treatment Development Against Gastrointestinal Nematodes In Sheep And Goats In Mississippi, Lindsey N. Dearborn
Determining The Best Indicators For Targeted Selective Treatment Development Against Gastrointestinal Nematodes In Sheep And Goats In Mississippi, Lindsey N. Dearborn
Theses and Dissertations
An understanding of characteristics of sheep and goat producers across the Southeast United States is crucial for the development and vitality of the small ruminant industry. The state of Mississippi (MS) is rich in animal agriculture, and sheep and goats display the potential to become an integral part of the state’s agricultural livelihood. However, sheep and goat producers are constantly combatting the negative effects gastrointestinal nematodes inflict upon their animals. With the anthelmintic resistance status rising across the globe, sustainable methods to control parasites in small ruminants are crucial. Therefore, small ruminant producers must develop an accurate targeted selective treatment …

Effects Of High School Engineering Course Availability And Participation On Engineering School Recruitment, Discipline Selection, Persistence Attitudes, And Self-Efficacy, Kristin S. Sandberg
Theses and Dissertations
The need for engineers in the workforce continues to grow. Filling this need requires recruiting future engineers to colleges and universities and retaining them through to degree completion. However, this is easier said than done. Universities are tasked with attempting to keep up with the demand for new engineers and companies are searching for new engineers to recruit. One avenue that has been established in the attempt to reach students for engineering is offering engineering or STEM classes in K-12 schools.
This dissertation looked at engineering classes offered at the high school level. These courses were analyzed for relationships with …
Loaded Lipid Emulsified Volatile Anesthetics In Canine Primary Hepatocytes, Patricia De Carvalho Ibrahim Obeid
Loaded Lipid Emulsified Volatile Anesthetics In Canine Primary Hepatocytes, Patricia De Carvalho Ibrahim Obeid
Theses and Dissertations
In the 19th century, halothane hepatitis became a sensitive and well-known subject in human anesthesiology due to the production of a noxious metabolite further discovered, trifluoroacetic acid. Subsequently, isoflurane, enflurane, and desflurane were also investigated for potentially causing hepatitis through the same metabolite. Sevoflurane, however, does not generate trifluoroacetic acid and is quickly conjugated and excreted.
For more than four decades these anesthetics have been experimentally developed for intravenous injection by having added either a lipid or fluorocarbon-based carrier to produce general anesthesia with less drug and faster onset of action. The use of intravenous emulsified halogenated anesthetics as an …
Impact Of A Feeding Strategy And Management Practices On The Health And Welfare Of Pullets And Laying Hens, Gerald Rodney Self
Impact Of A Feeding Strategy And Management Practices On The Health And Welfare Of Pullets And Laying Hens, Gerald Rodney Self
Theses and Dissertations
The overall purpose of this thesis is to understand the impact of management on commercial egg layers, whether that be environmental-related, health-related, or other possible stressors within the pullet and post-peak phases. Furthermore, the study seeks to examine what effects to performance and production these impacts may induce within a commercial layer in differing phases, specifically the pullet and post-peak phases. Chapter two explores into coccidiosis within the pullet phase, which induced by a commercial vaccine, can provide stress to a pullet, lowering protection against infection, and seriously compromising its growth and development into peak lay. Chapter three explores into …
Is A Test The Best?, Giulia Ronnette Mcdonald
Is A Test The Best?, Giulia Ronnette Mcdonald
Theses and Dissertations
The test effect (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006) demonstrates that performance on a final test is better when an immediate test is taken after reading a passage rather than rereading. Although transfer appropriate processing has been suggested as a theoretical explanation, the results could be due to elaborative retrieval processes during the immediate test that are not available during restudy. We compared testing to three other strategies using elaborative retrieval—Generating Questions, Read-Recite-Review, Teaching—to determine whether they would be as beneficial as testing. Results showed that each of the alternative strategies produced final test performance equal to that of testing, suggesting not …
Elucidating Self-Assembly Of Semiconducting Polymers In The Presence Of A Low Molecular Weight Gelator, Madhubhashini Lakdusinghe
Elucidating Self-Assembly Of Semiconducting Polymers In The Presence Of A Low Molecular Weight Gelator, Madhubhashini Lakdusinghe
Theses and Dissertations
Semiconducting polymers with a conjugated backbone are important for energy storage, conversion, and biomedical field applications. The self-assembly process of these polymers in solutions depends on the polymer concentration and quality of the solvent. The electrical properties of thin films obtained from the solution phase depend on the self-assembled process. Thin films of conjugated polymer gels with percolating networks of self-assembled structures display improved electrical conductivities. In this dissertation, we studied the impact of the secondary gel matrix formed by a low molecular weight gelator, on the self-assembly of conjugated polymers, the preservation of assembled structures in dried gel films …

Evaluation Of Heat Abatement Use, Vaginal Temperature, And Activity Of Pregnant, Lactating Holstein Cows Housed On Pasture With Or Without The Choice Between Shade And Sprinklers For Heat Abatement., Kevin M. Braman
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis was to determine how pregnant, lactating Holstein cows on pasture interact with shade and sprinklers when offered a choice or no-choice between methods. Authors hypothesized that cows would use shade more then sprinklers, but sprinklers would be more effective at cooling cows. Additionally, authors predicted cows using shade more would have decreased lying bouts and steps and an increase in time lying, compared to cows choosing sprinkler. Results indicate cows will use both methods when offered alone or together. However, cows will choose to be exposed or in shade at lower temperature humidity index values, …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Redox-Noninnocent Pyrazine(Diimine) Iron Complexes And An Inverted Pyridine(Diimine) Ligand, Jaylan Billups
Synthesis And Characterization Of Redox-Noninnocent Pyrazine(Diimine) Iron Complexes And An Inverted Pyridine(Diimine) Ligand, Jaylan Billups
Theses and Dissertations
Cooperativity between the metal center and the ligand has been shown in nature to be an important feature of systems that catalyze two-electron processes that first-row transition metals usually cannot catalyze on their own. In these cases, the ligand acts as a site of reactivity that in many instances can store electrons or react directly with substrates in solution. The design and study of systems where there is synergy between the metal and the ligand have been leveraged to catalyze polymerization and hydrogenation-type reactions as well as the activation of small molecules such as dihydrogen. Specifically, the pyridine(diimine) ligand scaffold …
Gas Permeability Of 3d Stitched Composites For Cryogenic Applications, Shuvam Saha
Gas Permeability Of 3d Stitched Composites For Cryogenic Applications, Shuvam Saha
Theses and Dissertations
This research aims to investigate the influence of 3D through-thickness stitching on the gas permeability and transverse microcracking of cryogenically cycled carbon/epoxy composites. 3D through-thickness stitching can be used to improve the interlaminar properties of polymer matrix composites (PMCs) and produce lightweight, unitized structures for cryogenic storage tanks. To fully utilize stitched composite structures for these applications, their inherent gas permeability challenges must be understood. Therefore, in this study, the stitched composites' damage evolution and gas permeability was experimentally characterized under a) pure thermal stress, b) thermal and uniaxial mechanical stress, and c) thermal and biaxial mechanical stress. Helium gas …
The Interaction Between Predation And Sound Pollution On The Internal And External Microbiome Of The Grasshoppers Melanopus Sanguinipes, Alanna Bond
Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic activities such as construction and agriculture directly affect its surrounding environments. Many studies have focused on how megafauna and flora are impacted by human activities, however, relatively little is known how new occupation of land affects smaller organisms such as insects and microbes. Additionally, other stressors such as predation can impact host physiology. The grasshopper species Melanopussanguinipes was chosen to be used in a study to measure how stress caused by artificial sound and predation can alter exoskeleton and gut microbiomes once exposed to these stressors.

Assessing Drivers Of Overwintering Survival And Annual Range Shifts By The Redbanded Stink Bug, Piezodorus Guildinii (Westwood), Thomas Gustavus Paul
Theses and Dissertations
The redbanded stink bug, Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is a non-native pest of soybeans in the Americas outside of the Carribean. Mortality of overwintering adults due to cold exposure has been implicated as a major driver of interannual fluctuations in the occurrence of P. guildinii in the southeastern United States, but formal investigations of drivers, including factors other than cold temperatures, are rare. We conducted overwintering assays with field-collected P. guildinii to quantify survival and coupled historical occurrence with climatic data to develop a species distribution model. We found that leaf litter provides substantial insulation from lethal temperatures and …

Modeling The Effect Of Neighborhood Competition On Tree Diameter Growth In The Pacific Northwest Coast Range, Htet Lin Naing
Theses and Dissertations
Trees compete for various resources such as sunlight, water, and nutrients, which can be expressed as numerical terms, called competition indices (CI). Competition between individual trees is correlated with their growth and mortality. Therefore, CIs are used as independent variables to develop, improve and modify growth and yield models. This study was conducted to test the effect of neighborhood competition on tree diameter growth among Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg) and red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.), in the Pacific Northwest Coast Range, USA. After testing seven distance-independent CIs and three distance-dependent …
Multi-Objective Design Optimization Of Two Configurations Of Ventricular Shunts For Hydrocephalus, Will Kirkpatrick
Multi-Objective Design Optimization Of Two Configurations Of Ventricular Shunts For Hydrocephalus, Will Kirkpatrick
Theses and Dissertations
Hydrocephalus is developed when the flow of cerebrospinal fluid is obstructed in the ventricles and a pressure build-up is generated within the brain. Ventricular shunts are used to remove excess fluid from the brain, but these shunts have a common problem of failure due to the shunt being obstructed by the build-up of astrocytes. To address this, two sets of 27 designs of ventricular shunts were identified and analyzed with parameters that could potentially reduce obstruction risks. The performance of these designs was examined using fluid simulations on these two sets of 27 designs. One set explored close-tipped shunt designs, …

Identifying Student Challenges In Organic Chemistry: Supporting Student Understanding Through Eye-Tracking, Think-Aloud Interviews And Alternative Questions, Lisa Ann Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Think-aloud interviews are a strategy used to identify misconceptions held by students. We incorporated think-aloud interviews and studied representational competence of novice and expert participants with identifying alkyl halides with multiple representations. We hypothesized that the participants would approach representations differently and think-aloud interviews would reveal misconceptions. Eye-tracking results showed that novice and expert participants differ in their approaches to representations and that novice participants spend more time on representations. Think-aloud interviews revealed that novice participants contain misconceptions on alkyl halide identification. This research provided insights on student understanding in identifying alkyl halides and representations, allowing instructors to use student …

Comparison Of Aging Techniques In Wild Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) Of Unknown Age From The Mississippi Sound., Christa Elizabeth Barrett
Theses and Dissertations
Age determination of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) is a critical tool in understanding their health. There are many methods of aging dolphins including morphometrics, counting growth layer groups (GLGs) of teeth, comparing dentin to pulp cavity ratio on dental radiographs, analysis of the pectoral flipper radiographs, and epigenetic testing. The most common method for aging toothed cetaceans is the counting of GLGs in the teeth. Since there are many challenges associated with aging dolphins based on the counting of GLGs, a processing technique that results in better resolution of GLGs is needed. This is a two-part study that …
An Analysis Of Moisture Environments Associated With Mature North Atlantic Tropial Cyclones, Katherine Berislavich
An Analysis Of Moisture Environments Associated With Mature North Atlantic Tropial Cyclones, Katherine Berislavich
Theses and Dissertations
Tropical cyclone (TC) intensity and structure are affected by their environments, including sea surface temperature, vertical wind shear, and atmospheric moisture. Analyses of TC environments often rely on area-averaged quantities, yet the spatial variability of these fields can affect TC behavior, such as moisture distribution impacting where and how much rain falls. This study identifies spatial patterns of environmental moisture surrounding mature North Atlantic TCs during 2000-2021 in shear of less than 20 knots. Empirical orthogonal function analysis of total column water vapor reveals six dominant patterns. These patterns account for nearly 67% of the variance in the dataset and …

Dune To Shore: The Relationship Between Vegetative Dune Systems And Shoreline Stability In Barrier Islands, Walter Hastings Hogue
Theses and Dissertations
Dauphin, Petit Bois, and Horn Island form the Alabama gulf-barrier chain directly south of Mobile Bay. Many studies have targeted local climate stressors and the flux of longshore currents as factors for erosional and accretional changes on these islands, but little attention is paid to the degradation of their vegetative dune-systems as a contributor to their shoreline morphology (Hanley et al., 2014; Smith, 2018; Byrnes, 2010). This study fills this literary gap, utilizing GIS raster classification and Digital Shoreline Analysis System to measure vegetative health and shoreline change on these islands and verify a relationship between these two factors. The …

Theses and Dissertations
Preemergence (PRE) herbicides are used to control weeds and reduce pressure on postemergence (POST) herbicides. However, knowledge of length of control each herbicide provides, as well as the amount of activation rainfall required for adequate weed control, is unknown in Mississippi soybean production. Twenty-one PRE applied soybean herbicides were evaluated for their duration of residual control for five weeks over twelve site years on three weed species from 2021-2022. Some differences in control following herbicide application used on certain weed species were observed at different times. However, most PRE herbicides resulted in adequate (greater than or equal to 90%) control …
