Inventory Of Western United States Glaciers- 2020, Shrinidhi Ambinakudige, Bernard Abubakari

The dataset employed for delineating glacier boundaries in the Western United States comprises a compilation of original Sentinel-2 images obtained from the European Space Agency's Copernicus website. These images were instrumental in generating the glacier inventory. Additionally, the dataset includes a Python and R script specifically crafted for processing and classifying Sentinel images. The outcome of this process is represented in an ESRI shapefile, which contains an inventory of glaciers extracted from Sentinel images.

In this poster, we share preservice elementary teachers' (PSTs') initial noticings during exploratory data analysis of materials focused on developing content knowledge of statistics as well as normalizing conversations of race in math class. The content covered is typically included in college-level introduction to statistics courses. We summarize PSTs' noticings and wonderings of an interactive data dashboard presenting racial disparities in school discipline.

In this poster we’ll share a powerful classroom activity we designed that aims to broaden students’ definition of what a maths person looks like. We implemented this activity with Black and Latinx middle school students. We noticed a significant difference in students’ portraits with a simple intervention, exposing students to mathematicians from cultures who have historically been marginalized from maths spaces, specifically Black and Latinx mathematicians. These findings suggest that being introduced to mathematicians of color can help broaden students’ perceptions of who belongs in maths spaces and support students’ development of the confidence and skills they need to succeed …

A Bayesian Approach To The Analysis Of Dose-Response Data: Estimating Natural Survivorship Without Abbott’S Correction And Inclusion Of Overdispersion Estimates, Michael A. Caprio, Jose B. Malaquias, Dominic Reisig

We assessed the utility of a Bayesian analysis of dose-mortality curves using probit analysis. A Bayesian equivalent of a conventional single population probit analysis using Abbott’s correction demonstrated the ability of the Bayesian model to recover parameters from generative data. We then developed a model that removed Abbott’s correction and estimated natural survivorship as part of the overall model fitting process. Based on WAIC (information content) scores, this model was selected over the model using Abbott’s corrected data in 196 out of 200 randomly generated datasets. This suggests that considerable information on control survivorship exists in the response to treated …

Several invasion ecology hypotheses explain patterns of invasion, but these effects are often complex and multifaceted. Within the study of aquatic invasive species, small aquatic ecosystems are often neglected, despite them representing most global freshwater bodies. This study uses community composition and environmental and geographic factors to explain the occurrence of invasive species in small lakes in the southeastern United States. Specifically, this study predicted that several ecosystem factors would predict the probability of occurrence of invasive species of the lakes studied. Short rotation woody crops (SRWCs) have potential to provide sustainable aviation fuels and exceptional carbon fiber for numerous products. However, many SRWCs are riparian species and measuring water use will ensure that large-scale plantations do not negatively impact surrounding hydrology. Traditionally, willows (Salix spp.) have been important SRWCs in cooler regions like northern Europe and the northeastern US. However, black willow (Salix nigra Marshall) is native to the southeastern US and could be grown in sites that are marginal for poplar (Populus) including heavy clay soils that tend to remain flooded into the growing season. The dataset consists of 4,590 frames distributed across 15 different video recordings representing diverse lighting and seasonal conditions of honey bee activity. These frames were labeled in three classes: non pollen carrying worker honey bees, pollen carrying worker honey bees, and drone bees. The frames were extracted from videos captured using GoPro Hero 9 and Hero 11 cameras in a research apiary at Mississippi State University. The video recording process was accompanied with data collection of environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, wind direction and speed, solar radiation and other weather conditions. Coal strip mining has left widespread degraded soils throughout the southeastern US. These soils tend to have low pH, high bulk density, impacted hydrologic processes, and an accumulation of heavy metals that limit revegetation efforts. Shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) is an ideal species for these reforestation efforts as it can tolerate the poor conditions on post-mined sites and has the largest native pine range in the southeastern US, overlapping with many post-mined areas. Over the late spring and summer months of 2023, the Southern Rural Development Center (SRDC) worked with 1890 and 1862 Cooperative Extension Service leaders across the Southern Region to gain insights from collaborations that work among the South’s 1862 and 1890 Land-Grant Universities (LGU). Using a mixed methods approach, insights were gained from Extension leaders as well as from project leaders that had successfully collaborated across institutions on an Extension effort. The following information outlines the methods and key findings gained from that process.

Alternanthera philoxeroides is an aquatic invasive weed from South America with a long history of biological control. The well-studied Agasicles hygrophila (alligatorweed flea beetle) successfully controls Al. philoxeroides in some parts of its invaded range, but Ag. hygrophila is unsuitable in other areas due to its intolerance to cold temperatures. An understudied biological control agent, Amynothrips andersoni (alligatorweed thrips) has shown greater tolerance to cold temperatures, but no research has been conducted to determine its ecological niche with respect to Al. philoxeroides. The Perceptual Origin Of Added Glottals In Spanish Loans In Modern Nahuan, Hugo Salgado, Justin Pinta

Spanish vowel-final loans are consistently adopted in modern Nahuan languages with an added glottal phoneme: Spanish mesa > Nahuan mesah ‘table’. This adaptation is puzzling because there is no obvious aspect of the phonological or morphological grammar of Nahuan that motivates it. We present evidence that, due to the weakened voicing of Spanish utterance-final vowels, Nahuan speakers perceive Spanish vowel-final words in utterance-final position as ending in the Nahuan glottal phoneme and adopt the word with it. The Philippines became an American colony after the Spanish-American War of 1898, and complete independence was not granted until 1946. The Philippine Civil Service was established in 1901, and this publication examines the lives of various Mississippians who worked for the Philippine government during the American colonial period, focusing on those who either held a prominent position or spent at least five years in the Philippines.

Capture histories of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) identified using nuclear DNA markers from hair snare samples activated on the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge in Mississippi between 2021 and 2022. Hair snares were active for 8 weeks (occassions) with non-grain attractants placed at the center of each snare. Dat includes unique pig identifiers (Pig_ID), capture histories (Capture_Occassion), and associated capture year (Group).

The Central Highlands ecoregion of the eastern United States represents a hotspot of freshwater biodiversity, with replicated patterns of vicariant speciation east and west of the Mississippi River. Previous phylogeographic investigation of the studfishes (Fundulus subgenus Fundulus) revealed evidence for vicariant speciation in the Central Highlands, but data were limited to a small number of gene sequences generated with Sanger sequencing. We used double digest restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) to improve resolution of phylogeographic patterns and better characterize population genetic variation. In a critical engagement with Marc Crépon's Murderous Consent, this essay revisits Albert Camus's writings on Algeria, from 1939 to the throes of the war of independence. Against the argument that Camus's work can provide a moral and philosophical compass for a critique of violence, it explores the effects that Camus's complex identification with France and its project of settler-colonialism in North Africa has on his understanding of the resistance, and eventually the war, of natives against the pieds-noir and the power of the colonial metropole. This article explores the relationship between contract and status in the context of contemporary social policy. Using examples of contract in the areas of unemployment policy (what is here called the workfare contract) and what has become known as the financialisation of the welfare state (Social Impact Bonds), the article identifies the types of bonds and obligations involved in those contracts and their sources.
