Truman Gates And The Transformation Of Otherness In The Film, Next Of Kin, Roger Guy Oct 2016

Truman Gates And The Transformation Of Otherness In The Film, Next Of Kin, Roger Guy

ASA Annual Conference

Roger Guy will discuss the concept of otherness and kinfolk from down home who come to the aid of Appalachian migrant and Chicago police officer, Truman Gates as conveyed in the film “Next of Kin” by contrasting and evaluating depictions in the film with those in his own work in the social history of Appalachians in Chicago. Truman Gates represents the assimilated urban Appalachian as contrasted with his rural kinfolk down home who convey his past and the transformation possible for Appalachian migrants. He argues that otherness is a dynamic concept being shaped by those it depicts as well as …

Food Images In Traditional Appalachian Music: Inventing And Homogenizing A Regional Cuisine, Lucy M. Long Oct 2016

Food Images In Traditional Appalachian Music: Inventing And Homogenizing A Regional Cuisine, Lucy M. Long

ASA Annual Conference

Old-time Appalachian tune titles and song lyrics frequently reference food and drink. These include specific dishes (for example, cornbread, biscuits, gravy, moonshine), ingredients (corn, cabbage, squirrels, chickens, sack of meal), and cooking implements (skillet, frying pan), as well as ways of obtaining food (hunting, farming, hoeing corn) and cooking it (frying, boiling). These references give descriptions of typical foods of the region, but they also offer an homogenized impression of what constitutes Appalachian foodways. While there are basic ingredients common throughout the area, there is a great deal of diversity in Appalachian foodways that reflects the diverse ethnicities, social classes, …

Motivations And Locavore Tendencies: A Preliminary Visitor Study Of Lexington, Kentucky Craft Breweries, Kenneth J. Berend Jr., Michael J. Bradley, James N. Maples

ASA Annual Conference

The emergence of craft beer in recent years has contributed to increased participation in beer tourism. However, there is a dearth of literature on brewery visitors. A key first step in researching beer tourism is to obtain an initial understanding of who is visiting breweries and why. This may provide information to better market target audiences. This information provides valuable insight for Kentucky brewery management and operations. Although this research concentrates on one state, it may enhance experiences at breweries in other states, increasing initial and repeat visitation. This study hopes to bring forth more information similar to the visitor …

Increasing Rural Tourism: A Demographic Profile Of Visitors To An Ohv Park In Rural Kentucky, Shaunna L. Scott, Michael J. Bradley, James Maples

ASA Annual Conference

As the foundation for their local economies continue to change, communities in rural eastern Kentucky continue to struggle economically. In efforts to help these rural communities recover, leadership and entrepreneurs have identified natural resources in eastern Kentucky as a footing by which to build a new economic structure related to outdoor recreation. As awareness of these areas continues to grow, many outdoor recreation resources and experiences are generating investment and recreation interest. In that outdoor recreation development is already in process in many places, those interested in facilitating these experiences have decisions to make regarding development and marketing. However, there …

Publishing Tools In Sermon Studies, Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

“Green.” “Gold.” “DOAJ.” “APC.” These terms – and many more – are part of the vocabulary of open access publishing, a model that is becoming increasingly prevalent with both established presses and independent journals. In this talk, Robert Ellison surveys current patterns and trends in the open access world, and discusses some of the decisions that must be made when starting a new open access journal. As a case study, he outlines the process of launching Sermon Studies, an online-only, peer-reviewed publication that has recently “gone live” at Marshall University.

Ideational Grammatical Metaphorical Features Of Efl Textbooks, Yuya Kaneso Jan 2016

Ideational Grammatical Metaphorical Features Of Efl Textbooks, Yuya Kaneso

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Various genres of textbooks have been researched from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Although the previous research has been concerned with textbooks covering subject areas in English speaking countries, it has not examined English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks. By analyzing 14 EFL textbooks for junior high school and high school students from the perspective of the SFL grammatical metaphor, this study attempts to examine levels of lexico-grammatical complexity and its sequential features as used in the data. The findings show that semantic junctions whereby semantic elements are incongruently realized at the level of lexicogrammar do not …

Portrayals Of Gender In The Media: A Content Analysis Approach To Identifying Gender Oppression And Legitimation Of Patriarchy In Magazine Advertisements, Autumn M. O’Toole Jan 2016

Portrayals Of Gender In The Media: A Content Analysis Approach To Identifying Gender Oppression And Legitimation Of Patriarchy In Magazine Advertisements, Autumn M. O’Toole

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Advertisements are among the most pervasive forms of media. Portrayals of gender in advertisements constitute a significant subject of social research based on this pervasiveness and the influence that advertising media have on audiences. This influence is based on the notion that media is an institutional vehicle for ideas about products, lifestyles, and oppression. In this study, the institution of media is examined through an analysis of representations of patriarchy and gender oppression in media advertisements. The primary research question is: In what ways can we identify gender oppression and the support of hegemonic masculinity and systems of patriarchy in …

The Effects Of Students' Perceptions Of Campus Safety And Security On Student Enrollment, Brian Andrew Carrico Jan 2016

The Effects Of Students' Perceptions Of Campus Safety And Security On Student Enrollment, Brian Andrew Carrico

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this research was to determine whether student enrollment is affected by the student perception of campus safety and security when choosing a college. As the competition for students increases among higher education institutions, it is important for higher education administrators to know how to effectively present their respective institution and all of its attributes to prospective students. The targeted sample for this study was freshmen from a regional university in the mid-eastern states who are enrolled in new student seminar classes. The research questions were designed to provide information regarding the extent to which the perceptions of …

Assessing The Impact Of A Supermarket Shuttle Model On Supermarket Access Within Cabell County, West Virginia, Doug Wiley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Will the implementation of a grocery shuttle impact supermarket access for residents of Cabell County, West Virginia? The concentration of supermarkets in the City of Huntington has led to a service gap in the outlying census block groups of the study area. Supermarket access is concentrated in the City of Huntington and may provide a positive outcome for families living within the city. The study assesses the impact of the implementation of a supermarket shuttle on supermarket access within the study area, through spatial analysis of supermarkets, transportation networks, and census block groups. The transportation network data and census block …

The Human Manager: Consent Deal, Informal Organization And Routinization, Jennifer Lynn Conrad Jan 2016

The Human Manager: Consent Deal, Informal Organization And Routinization, Jennifer Lynn Conrad

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study explores the quantitative and qualitative data relating to the consent deal, informal work organizations, and how job satisfaction links to both. Using a study done by Laubach and Wallace, I will replicate the results in a different industry and on a broader scale. I developed qualitative data through months of participant observation at the general manager level of fast casual restaurants as well as multiple interviews. I gathered quantitative information from the GSS on aspects of the consent deal and how it affects a worker’s subjective response to their workplace in general and their job satisfaction in particular. …

A Correlational Study Of Self-Regulation And Fine Arts In Education, Rachel D. Hendricks Jan 2016

A Correlational Study Of Self-Regulation And Fine Arts In Education, Rachel D. Hendricks

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Self-regulation positively relates to student behavior and achievement, and fine arts participation has demonstrated similar improvements in behavior and achievement. It was hypothesized that participation in school-based fine arts would positively correlate with self-regulation, and the intensity of students’ fine arts participation would also correlate with self-regulation. Students aged 15 to 19 were administered a self-regulation questionnaire. Responses from students currently participating in fine arts were compared to students with no fine arts participation to find if a relationship exists between fine arts and self-regulation. This study found no significant relationship between fine arts participation and self-regulation, and no significant …

Bodybuilding Is An Art And Your Body Is The Canvas: An Examination Of Bodybuilders And The Built Body, Caitlin Greaf Jan 2016

Bodybuilding Is An Art And Your Body Is The Canvas: An Examination Of Bodybuilders And The Built Body, Caitlin Greaf

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examines the bodybuilding community by conducting interviews and watching the bodybuilding documentaries Pumping Iron, Pumping Iron II, and Generation Iron. Bodybuilders’ performance of the body is not solely acted just on stage for competitions. Rather, bodybuilders are continuously redefining limitations of what we determine a ‘normal’ body looks like. By using the concept of the gaze, I analyze bodybuilders’ bodies as an oddity on and off stage (Mulvey, 1989). The oddity of their body transforms the space it takes up into a stage for entertainment. I then examine gender performances of female and male bodybuilders within the traditionally …

Women Leading To Make A Difference: An Inside Look At A Strength-Based Home Visiting Program In Rural Appalachia, Kathy J. Bialk

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Maternal Infant Outreach Worker Program (MIHOW) is a strength-based home visitation program that uses trained lay women indigenous to the community to mentor and teach parents who are economically disadvantaged or live in geographically isolated areas about healthy and positive pregnancy and parenting up until the child turns age three. This qualitative case study conducted in rural Appalachia at two program sites examined how women involved in the West Virginia MIHOW program – program leaders, home visitors, and mothers – came to recognize their strengths and use them to achieve life aspirations. In addition, this study explored how MIHOW …
