During the past two decades a substantial amount of educational research has focused on the relationship between socioeconomic status and school achievement. Many researchers believe that a strong correlation exists between these two factors while others present evidence to refute this hypothesis. It appears that most of these investigations fall into one of three categories. Arthur Jensen, a well known advocate of genetic determinism, contended that eighty percent of the variance in intelligence could be accounted for by hereditary factors. The sentencing of individuals is a very important stage in the Criminal Justice System in the United States. The sentence is the basic decision which determines how, where, and for how long an offender should be dealt with by the state (LaBeff, 1978, p. 1). This study will focus on the question of whether or not sentence disparity exists in West Virginia.

As documented in previous research, parents are an important influence in their child’s college selection process. However, little attention had been given to how parents themselves develop perceptions of or preferences for specific colleges under consideration. This study’s research design tested the null hypothesis:

"THERE EXISTS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PARENT(S) OF IN-STATE STUDENTS AND PARENT(S) OF OUT-OF-STATE STUDENTS IN THEIR FORMATION OF PERCEPTIONS AND PREFERENCES FOR WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY (WVU)."

A sample was drawn from a general population that consisted of the following three categories of students who showed interest in WVU for Fall, 1981:

This interview contains detailed information concerning the workings of the West Virginia legislature and the governor's office from approximately 1932 to 1942. James Kay Morgan, a prominent Charleston lawyer and former West Virginia legislator, discusses his years in the House of Delegates, his career in the Air Force, and his subsequent civic and professional work in the Charleston area. The interview also covers the implementation of several important legislative enactments in West Virginia history, such as the 1932 Tax Limitation Amendment and the Consumer's Sales Tax.

In January of 1937, the largest flood of record hit the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys. Lowell Thomas compared the flood of 1937 with the Great Flood of the Bible. While this exaggerates somewhat the magnitude of the disaster, the people of the Tri-State area must have felt their world was coming to an end; indeed, for the individuals killed in the deluge, their world did end. Yet, the Tri-State and the Ohio Valley survived the inundation.
