This project tells the story of a generation, a region, and a unique educational moment in Appalachian history through a series of hand printed, hand bound, illustrated artists books. Capturing the lived experience of elders in the communities of Polk County, Tennessee and Cherokee County, North Carolina, the research expands our understanding of Appalachian education and social work before public education was introduced to the area. The project appropriately merged Dockery’s interdisciplinary work in visual arts, art education and Appalachian Studies and expanded the scholarship on rural education. Utilizing an arts based research methodology, the research introduces the Lynn Bachman …

Burnout Syndrome In Hospital Nurses, Priscilla Holdren, David P. Paul Iii, Alberto Coustasse
Burnout Syndrome In Hospital Nurses, Priscilla Holdren, David P. Paul Iii, Alberto Coustasse
Management Faculty Research
Burnout is a state of mental, physical and emotional stress resulting in a chronic state of pressure or stress at work and is associated with individuals who do “people work” (Aiken and Sloane, 1997), a category into which nurses obviously fall. The number of nurses suffering from burnout has increased over the years, possibly causing negative effects on patient care, working environments and staffing shortages.
Hospitals should focus on creating a healthy work environment in which nurses feel supported by their coworkers and management. Hospitals should also make available stress management programs that address symptoms of burnout and assure safe …

Correlates Of Exhibition-Like Experiences And The Development Of Exhibitionism In Females, Sarah Fouch
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to examine possible events or risk factors that occur during the critical period of learning, before age 18, that influence an individual to engage in exhibitionism or have urges to expose themselves. Anonymous data from 2,201 female participants were obtained using a computer-assisted self-administered questionnaire. Early experiences were examined to determine risk factors for ever having exposed themselves in a public place or ever having had urges to expose themselves in public places using logistic regression analysis. Many of the events that were identified as significant predictors for exhibitionism, such as seeing the mother …

Nuclear Family Dynamics: Predictors Of Childhood Crushes And Adult Sexual Orientation, Natalie M. Campbell
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study investigated the effects of nuclear family dynamics on childhood crushes and adult sexual orientation. Retrospective data was gathered via an anonymous survey administered using a computer-assisted self-interview program. Data was collected from 1,242 non-transsexual males (age range 18-86) and 2,201 non-transsexual females (age range 18-78). Management of parental disagreements, maternal attitude about sex, parental composition of the nuclear family, maternal affection, and parental demonstration of affection predicted the sex of childhood crushes in males and/or females. Management of parental disagreement, parental attitude about sex, nudity practices within the home, parental demonstration of affection, and parental composition of the …

Healthcare Of The Uninsured Population In West Virginia And The United States, Leslie Salyers, Mounica Mummaneni, William K. Willis, Alberto Coustasse
Management Faculty Research
Introduction: The uninsured population in the United States has increased dramatically over the past few years. Hospitals and physicians bear the financial burden of the uninsured by compensating for the billions of dollars in bad debt or uncompensated care they incur each year. Emergency rooms and other healthcare facilities are left with billions in uncompensated care due to 47 million uninsured Americans. Uncompensated care in 2006 was $31.2 billion. Majority of individuals accounting for uncompensated care are those living at or below the federal poverty level and those individuals who can afford health coverage but freely choose to forgo purchasing …

Critical Period Conditioning By Orgasm During Heterosexual Oral Sex, Kristy N. Woods
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Data were obtained retrospectively and anonymously using a computerized survey instrument from 450 female and 489 male participants who had experienced orgasm during oral sex before age 18, as well as 352 female and 151 male participants who had not experienced an orgasm while receiving oral sex before age 18. Female participants who experienced an orgasm during oral sex prior to age 18 were significantly more likely to experience an orgasm during oral sex after age 18. For male participants, although the difference was in the hypothesized direction, it did not reach significance. Female participants who experienced an orgasm during …

Paraprofessionals' Experiences And Understandings Of The Maternal Infant Health Outreach Worker Program (Mihow) In West Virginia, Amy Knell Carlson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
MIHOW, the Maternal Infant Health Outreach Worker Program, is a parent-to-parent home visitation program that aims to enhance early childhood development and parent education in economically disadvantaged and geographically isolated families with children birth to three. This qualitative case study conducted in two rural Appalachian counties examined the perceptions and experiences of paraprofessionals who are trained and work as home visitors in the MIHOW Program. Findings were interpreted in relation to extant literature on the use of paraprofessionals in home visitation. Three themes emerged from the data. The first theme related to the use of a strength-based approach and how …

This panel will report on the progress that has been made on eco-tourism development in an area of the Russell Fork River between Haysi, VA, Elkhorn City, KY, and Millard, KY. Home to approximately 3000 people, this area hopes to build upon its eco -and adventure tourism assets, which include the Breaks Interstate Park, the Russell Fork River (already a river destination for world-class kayakers), and the Pine Mountain Trail, the Great Eastern Trail and the Trans America Bike Trail.
