Prior to the passing of the County Unit Law by the West Virginia Legislature in 1933., a number of school districts were transporting children to public schools in the interest of both economy and better school opportunities for the children. By 1933 it was apparent to all that the only way to meet the demands for economy through consolidation of schools was by means of pupil transportation. The school year 1934-35 was the first year when all counties in West Virginia reported the transportation of pupils at public expense. This item is a bound hardback collection of each of the monthly newsletters published in September 1955 through August 1956. The patients created the newsletter, from writing the articles to creating the drawings, for it to be sold to the greater Huntington community in exchange for donations. The newsletters give valuable insight into patient lifestyle, mental healthcare at the time, and various other topics that pertain to the Clinic and Huntington society overall. The patients mostly wrote under pseudonyms to protect identities, but certain staff and doctors are referenced by name. Their work allows the reader to see a unique …

Some Pupil Transportation Problems In The Public Schools Of West Virginia, Henry Leonard Clay Jr.

Pupil transportation is coming to be considered an indispensable service in the West Virginia school systems. In the year 1941-42 more than 132,885 pupils were transported to and from West Virginia schools daily. This was an increase of 77,886 over the number transported in 1932-33 or an increase of about 8,660 annually.
The average daily attendance in the public elementary and secondary schools of West Virginia for the year 1941-42 and 395, 065 which shows that 33.63 per cent of all the pupils attending the public school were transported at public expense. The sum of $2,142,943.40 was spent for transportation, …
