Oral History Interview: Beatrice M. Adkins, Beatrice M. Adkins

0064: Marshall University Oral History Collection

This interview is one of series conducted concerning the Oral History of Appalachia. Beatrice Adkins was a lifelong resident of Kanawha County (WV). She spent most of her childhood living in a coal town (Big Chimney), where her father and brother worked as loggers for the company. When her father died, she left school at age 14 and joined the older of the 12 children in the family to work. She was the only member of the family to attend school. Most of her work experience is with two meat packing companies, P.E. Holtz and Armor, neither of which remained …

They were merely meant to be a voiceless servant to the male gender.

This master’s thesis will examine the racial and gender oppression that Chicanas Cisneros, and Julia Alvarez — focusing primarily on their attempts to establish a gender have faced over the centuries, beginning with the days of Malintzin and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, and continuing until the …

The Narrative Voice Of Lee Smith: Emergence Of A Passionate Narrative Voice Through Body And Spirit, Judith A. Eddy Jan 1998

The Narrative Voice Of Lee Smith: Emergence Of A Passionate Narrative Voice Through Body And Spirit, Judith A. Eddy

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Winding farther and farther off the concrete interstate, climbing higher and deeper into the mountains, leaving two-lane roads behind for a one-lane dirt road, and then leaving the last vestiges of the dirt road behind and forging still deeper and deeper into the mountains, the adventuresome traveler beholds the emerging isolated rural hollows. What kind of people choose to live in this remote southern geographical region known as the Appalachian mountain range which runs from northern Georgia through the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky, the Virginias and Pennsylvania? The people who chose to live in these isolated regions are not the town …

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Local media should carefully consider whether or not their health information coverage provides current and useful information to people living within their viewing area. For example, people living in Appalachia experience health conditions that are not consistent with those experienced in every region …
