The Isolation Factor, Kevin Oshnock Oct 2016

The Isolation Factor, Kevin Oshnock

ASA Annual Conference

In Appalachian North Carolina, there has been much debate over sympathies towards the Union or the Confederacy during the Civil War. Many modern historians argue that Western North Carolina was strongly pro Confederate and that most pockets of Unionism were either near the Tennessee border or just random. However, the situation is much more complicated than that. Based on enlistment data of Union and Confederate soldiers in Watauga and Buncombe counties, the elevation one lived at was a much better predictor of Unionism than their proximity to the Tennessee border. Folks living at higher elevations were typically more isolated, poorer, …

Food Images In Traditional Appalachian Music: Inventing And Homogenizing A Regional Cuisine, Lucy M. Long

ASA Annual Conference

Old-time Appalachian tune titles and song lyrics frequently reference food and drink. These include specific dishes (for example, cornbread, biscuits, gravy, moonshine), ingredients (corn, cabbage, squirrels, chickens, sack of meal), and cooking implements (skillet, frying pan), as well as ways of obtaining food (hunting, farming, hoeing corn) and cooking it (frying, boiling). These references give descriptions of typical foods of the region, but they also offer an homogenized impression of what constitutes Appalachian foodways. While there are basic ingredients common throughout the area, there is a great deal of diversity in Appalachian foodways that reflects the diverse ethnicities, social classes, …

Ecological Crisis And The Re-Enchantment Of Nature In Jaime Huenún’S Reducciones., Ida Day

Modern Languages Faculty Research

Chilean poet Jaime Huenún’s Reducciones (Reductions; 2012) explores the social and environmental consequences of European colonization since the second half of the nineteenth century, when southern Chile received thousands of German immigrants as part of a state-sponsored colonization plan. Confronted with large stretches of impenetrable native forests, the colonists began a deforestation process in order to prepare the land for agriculture and livestock farming, which left a profound impact on the society, economy, and geography of the region. In less than a century, the region spanning La Araucanía to Chiloé lost at least three million hectares of native forests. The …

Genetic Structure Of Micromeria (Lamiaceae) In Tenerife, The Imprint Of Geological History And Hybridization On Within-Island Diversification, Pamela Puppo, Manuel Curto, Harald Meimberg

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Geological history of oceanic islands can have a profound effect on the evolutionary history of insular flora, especially in complex islands such as Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Tenerife results from the secondary connection of three paleo-islands by a central volcano, and other geological events that further shaped it. This geological history has been shown to influence the phylogenetic history of several taxa, including genus Micromeria (Lamiaceae). Screening 15 microsatellite markers in 289 individuals representing the eight species of Micromeria present in Tenerife, this study aims to assess the genetic diversity and structure of these species and its relation with …

Keeping Rural Medical Students Connected to their Roots: A “Home for the Holidays” Immersion Experience

Abstract

Introduction

Preclinical medical students with an initial affinity for rural practice often experience urban disruption during training. Longer summer rural immersion experiences have been shown to be somewhat effective in keeping rural students connected to their rural roots. Some students cannot adapt their schedules to these longer experiences. In response, a brief practice experience near home during the winter break of the academic year was established.

Methods

Nineteen detailed rural practice assessments were completed by preclinical medical students during school years 2009-2014 and essays …

Significant positional differences in this pattern between two monotypic iurid genera, Calchas and Iurus, are presented. With the analysis of over 100 specimens of genus Iurus, representing many localities in Greece and Turkey, several unique occurrences of neobothriotaxy involving both the chela and patella are discussed and illustrated, representing the first report of neobothriotaxy in family Iuridae.

The True Identity Of Scorpio (Atreus) Obscurus Gervais, 1843 (Scorpiones, Buthidae), Wilson R. Lourenço, Elise-Anne Leguin Jan 2016

The True Identity Of Scorpio (Atreus) Obscurus Gervais, 1843 (Scorpiones, Buthidae), Wilson R. Lourenço, Elise-Anne Leguin

Euscorpius

The true identity of the scorpion Scorpio (Atreus) obscurus Gervais, 1843 is discussed based on new data. The original type material was recently discovered in the collections of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris, which confirms that this old species, originally described by Gervais based on two female specimens from French Guiana, does indeed belong to the genus Tityus C. L. Koch, 1836. Furthermore, an analysis of all morphological characteristics of Tityus (Atreus) obscurus verifies its position as a senior synonym of both Tityus paraensis Kraepelin, 1896 and Tityus cambridgei Pocock, 1897. In this paper, we designate the two …

Rest, Sweet Nymphs: Pastoral Origins Of The English Madrigal, Danielle Van Oort Jan 2016

Rest, Sweet Nymphs: Pastoral Origins Of The English Madrigal, Danielle Van Oort

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis is an interdisciplinary study of the impact pastoral themes in art, literature, and music had on the stylistic and thematic development of the late-Renaissance English madrigal (ca. 1590–1620), specifically works by Elizabethan composers. Madrigals were profoundly influenced by poetry and visual art as the basis for text and subject matter. Consequently, many English madrigals, both light and serious forms, cultivated Arcadian themes presented in Italian idyllic art and literature of the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth centuries. Works discussed throughout each chapter include Jacopo Sannazaro’s poetic collection, Arcadia (ca. 1489), Edmund Spenser’s seasonal eclogues, The Shepheardes Calender (1579), Oliver Isaac’s …
