The Impact Of Big Data On Chronic Disease Management, Niharika Bhardwaj, Bezawit Wadajo, Anthony Spano, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Introduction: Population health management – and specifically chronic disease management – depend on the ability of providers to identify patients at high risk of developing costly and harmful conditions such as diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The advent of big data analytics could help identify high-risk patients which is really beneficial to healthcare practitioners and patients to make informed decisions in a timelier manner with much more evidence in hand. It would allow doctors to extend effective treatment but also reduces the costs of extending improved care to patients.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to …

“In The Language To Which They Were Born”: A Study Of Audience For The Vernacular Catholic Homilies Of Aelfric, Angela B. Fulk Oct 2017

“In The Language To Which They Were Born”: A Study Of Audience For The Vernacular Catholic Homilies Of Aelfric, Angela B. Fulk

Conference on Sermon Studies

In the final decades before the year 1000, an Anglo-Saxon abbot named Aelfric wrote and distributed three series of homilies in the Old English language, all, or nearly all, of which have survived. David Knowles, in his monumental volume, The Monastic Order in England, describes Aelfric’s place in English church history as “second only to Bede and in direct spiritual descent from him.” Aelfric appears to clearly state his purpose for the composition of his homilies in two prefaces attached to the first series of forty homilies, with the first preface written in Latin and the second in Old English. …

Recycling A Colonial Puritan Sermon: A Case Study, David M. Powers

Conference on Sermon Studies

Notes which the teenager John Pynchon took in the 1640s as he listened to the Rev. George Moxon’s sermons in frontier Springfield, MA, have become the inspiration and the ingredients for sermon performances in 21st century New England. The project began with a word-for-word transcription of a symbol-for-symbol manuscript based on a code invented by Pynchon. Then a very few words which the notetaker skipped, in his rush to record just what he heard, were added to provide essential clarification. So, too, was introductory material to frame the experience by encouraging the listening congregation to “stretch” a bit to appreciate …

American Flooding And National Security, Tavish M. Riley Apr 2017

American Flooding And National Security, Tavish M. Riley

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Flooding is a powerful force of nature that shows no inherent care for where it strikes. This study mapped flood locations and frequencies in the United States. The data presented is an analysis of major flood events in the lower forty-eight states between 1970-2016. The maps reflect the death tolls, locations, and overall cost of their damages, along with precipitation data and stream gauge readings. This study focuses on larger flood events, particularly those resulting in true damage to both the nation’s infrastructure and economy.

Results suggest that there are areas in the United States that have higher potential for …

Indian Gurus Uproot Yoga's Traditions, Alexandra T. Bright Apr 2017

Indian Gurus Uproot Yoga's Traditions, Alexandra T. Bright

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Yoga, an Indian practice with roots over 4000 years old, is a relatively new practice in the United States. The U.S. first welcomed Indian gurus and their yogic spiritual teachings in 1893 with Swami Vivekananda at the Chicago Parliament of Religions. Yoga has been an ever-evolving practice since its start, changing with the times, though this change has been slow and contained within the subcontinent of India. When yoga was introduced to the U.S. it became an American practice with nearly all of its roots and traditions disappearing. The goal of this study is to discover if the Indian gurus …

Does The El Nino Southern Oscillation Play A Role In The Spatial Distribution Of Tornadoes In The United States?, Katarena A. Jarrell

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is an event that is happening in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of South America. During an ENSO event, there are periods where the water off the coast is unusually warm or unusually cold. When the water temperature changes, it causes the air pressure that is above the water to change. The temperature change affects the weather pattern worldwide and along with it severe weather outbreaks. In a 2008 study by Cook and Schaefer, they mapped historical points for winter outbreaks for the three types of years associated with the ENSO event. These …

Poverty And Its Effects On Food And Education In Children, Shari Holland Apr 2017

Poverty And Its Effects On Food And Education In Children, Shari Holland

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Throughout time, there has been a gap between those who are rich in their economic means and those less fortunate. Exemplified by the infamous saying, “the rich get richer as the poor get poorer,” some claim that there is a trickling effect, where all the money trickles down to the poor, equalizing the economy. The individuals who are poor have less opportunities, which would decrease chances of success in life. The economic situations of the adults ultimately impact the most vulnerable, the children. Data from childstats.gov was used for this study and pertained to children living in three family situations: …

Youngstown, Oh: A Shrinking City's New Economic Plan, Kya Williams

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Economic development is important for the success of a city. It helps improve the quality of life for the people and the community. Youngstown, OH was once nicknamed Steel Valley for it was surrounded by steel mills. As the demand for steel declined, so did the economy of Youngstown. Over the years, half of the city’s population relocated. Youngstown is a shrinking city that is targeting investments and new technology. The immediate objective of this research project is to examine economic and community development that is shaping the city of Youngstown. The city came up with the Youngstown 2010 Plan …

Syrian Refugees: Morality Or Security?, Michael H. Fields Apr 2017

Syrian Refugees: Morality Or Security?, Michael H. Fields

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

The Syrian Civil War has been an ongoing conflict and struggle since it began in 2011. Syrian’s may have been unsatisfied with the dictatorship that they were subject to, but certainly they had never hoped for this “revolution” to have such a negative impact on the country and their lives. Thus, the civil war has spawned millions of refugees from Syria. Despite these existing problems, the United States under President Trump decided to take in Syrian refugees no longer. Is there a real justification for this action?

Answering this question requires one to consider why we would fear these refugees …

Protests From The Pulpit: The Confessing Church And The Sermons Of World War Ii, William S. Skiles Jan 2017

Protests From The Pulpit: The Confessing Church And The Sermons Of World War Ii, William S. Skiles

Sermon Studies

This article examines sermons delivered by Confessing Church pastors in the Nazi dictatorship during World War II, and specifically explores the messages of opposition against the regime. The approach of most historians has focused on the history of the Christian institutions, its leaders, and its persecution by the Nazi regime, leaving the most elemental task of the pastor - that is, preaching - largely unexamined. To understand Confessing Church opposition during World War II, I have analyzed 255 sermons delivered in pulpits, published in pamphlets, and broadcast over the airwaves. Furthermore, I have examined sermons delivered "out in the open" …

A Learning Model Of Community Collaboration In West Virginia, Tracy L. Bradley Jan 2017

A Learning Model Of Community Collaboration In West Virginia, Tracy L. Bradley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study tested a grounded theory model, Getting it Together: A Learning Model of Community Collaboration, developed during a six-year study (2004-2010) of a statewide substance abuse prevention program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). The model features the perceptions and experiences of those who were active in community-based collaborative and educational work in West Virginia focused on substance abuse prevention. The study revisited community coalitions from three counties that were part of the original ethnographic research used to develop the community collaboration theory. The grounded theory …

"The Whole Building Is A Classroom": An Oral History Of A School's Role In The Culture Of The Community, Valerie Free Jones

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Edward Lee and Lulu McClain gave the gift of a new high school to the rural Appalachian community of Greenfield, Ohio, in 1915. Inspired in part by John Dewey’s Progressive theories of education, the school became the center of the community, both literally and figuratively, providing the best, most modern education for its students. The school was particularly unique in its focus on the arts, with its spaces carefully crafted and developed; its halls and classrooms filled with over 200 pieces of classic and original art, including murals, sculpture, and other works; and its curriculum inspired by art-based ideas of …

Terror And Territory: A Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Isil, Robert Riley Strider Jan 2017

Terror And Territory: A Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Isil, Robert Riley Strider

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), alternatively the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), is one of many non-state organizations that resulted from the extensive foreign intervention in the Middle East leading up to current conflicts there. Like the wider network that it used to be part of, ISIL is considered to be a great threat to modern first world countries. Using data from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), this paper analyzed the relationship between the amount of territory ISIL held from June 2014 to December 2015 and the attacks it carried out in that time, …
