Using Book Clubs To Encourage Middle School Reading Interest: A Qualitative Case Study, Marc Shoemaker
Using Book Clubs To Encourage Middle School Reading Interest: A Qualitative Case Study, Marc Shoemaker
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Reading has been central to my life since my earliest years and has molded me into the adult I have become, for better or worse. My conversations in classrooms, backed by research, has made it plain that today’s students value reading far less than in the past. Books are still read in class, but less out-of-class reading takes place, and a lessening number of students carry a love of reading into adulthood. Student attitude toward reading changes during the middle-school years. As reading increases children’s empathy and critical thinking abilities, this becomes a significant concern. For my research, I chose …

Recycling A Colonial Puritan Sermon: A Case Study, David M. Powers
Recycling A Colonial Puritan Sermon: A Case Study, David M. Powers
Sermon Studies
Notes which the teenager John Pynchon took in the 1640s as he listened to the Rev. George Moxon’s sermons in frontier Springfield, MA, have become the inspiration and the ingredients for sermon performances in 21st century New England. The project began with a word-for-word transcription of a symbol-for-symbol manuscript based on a code invented by Pynchon. Then a very few words which the notetaker skipped, in his rush to record just what he heard, were added to provide essential clarification. So, too, was introductory material to frame the experience by encouraging the listening congregation to “stretch” a bit to appreciate …

Geographic Analysis Of Asbestos Exposure And Mortality In The United States, Ann Lockard
Geographic Analysis Of Asbestos Exposure And Mortality In The United States, Ann Lockard
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
The mineral asbestos is a well-established cause of fatal lung cancers, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. Asbestos use in the United States during the 20th century was commonplace in commercial, military, and residential applications for its usefulness in fireproofing and as an insulation material. Efforts began in the 1970s to heavily regulate asbestos in occupational settings to protect workers. This study examines asbestos occupational surveillance data from the 1970s-80s and asbestos-related mortality from 2006-2016 for 50 states as well as the District of Columbia. Correlation between surveilled injurious exposure and mortality after a sufficient latency period is weak, suggesting that surveillance …
Does Forest Area Within Countries Mitigate Carbon Dioxide Levels?, Nicholas Beaty
Does Forest Area Within Countries Mitigate Carbon Dioxide Levels?, Nicholas Beaty
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Climate change has become a controversial topic on a global scale and has been subject to many debates of how to combat the rising carbon dioxide levels that many argue is causing the Earth’s global temperature to increase. A proposed solution to lower carbon dioxide levels lays right at our feet, as the presence of trees have been acknowledged to mitigate carbon dioxide levels in forested areas. Carbon dioxide mitigation has been a natural response from Earth to lower the carbon dioxide levels by trees being able to absorb the carbon dioxide around them, the effect being amplified more in …
Landsat Analysis Of Urban Growth: The Study Of A Once Rural Community, Jeremy Bozeman
Landsat Analysis Of Urban Growth: The Study Of A Once Rural Community, Jeremy Bozeman
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
The areas in which we live can change rapidly. What is used as a pasture today can become a subdivision of fifty homes in a year. Rapid urban growth puts a strain on infrastructure and resources, making it difficult for urban planners and local governments to identify the areas of greatest need. The use of remote sensing and GIS allows decision makers to monitor the size and scope of urban growth. The purpose of this study is to determine the urban growth of Hardin Valley, an unincorporated community in Knox County, TN using remote sensing and GIS. Land Use/Land Cover …
Population Change In Appalachia Since 1910, Colton Snyder
Population Change In Appalachia Since 1910, Colton Snyder
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Appalachian population trends over the last century have fluctuated from large gains to enormous losses. This has led to extreme economic swings across the region. Past studies have shown Appalachia as a whole saw major growth and development in the early 1900’s due to mining and manufacturing, as well as the fall of the region’s main economic suppliers in the latter half of the 20th century. This study analyzes population variations across Appalachia since the early 20th century. The purpose was to show where population has varied and the links between economic changes among the sub-regions within Appalachia. …

Feminism And Mythology: Hiratsuka Raicho And Japanese Feminism, Edris Akers
Feminism And Mythology: Hiratsuka Raicho And Japanese Feminism, Edris Akers
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
In the early 1900s of Japan, Hiratsuka Raicho started a journal called Bluestocking. In its early years, it focused on women’s literature. Soon after, the focus of the journal shifted to women’s issues. In one of the first issues, Raicho made reference to Japan’s creation myths in an attempt to stress the suppression of women’s rights in Japan. Raicho’s dialog regarding women’s reproductive health stirred innumerable conversations within the community. Through her poetry she made clear her own feelings on women’s rights of the time period. I will introduce the ode to mythology in feminism in Japan in the …

Euscorpius
In 2016-2018, we identified 48 distribution records of Euscorpius carpathicus in the Cozia National Park, from the Romanian Southern Carpathians. The Carpathian scorpion was found between 300 and 847 m a.s.l., in forested regions, being more numerous in the lower areas situated along the Olt River. E. carpathicus is a native species in the region; it populates natural areas with low human impact.
Substituting Open Educational Resources For Commercial Curriculum Materials: Effects On Student Mathematics Achievement In Elementary Schools, John Hilton Iii, Ross Larsen, David Wiley, Lane Fischer
Substituting Open Educational Resources For Commercial Curriculum Materials: Effects On Student Mathematics Achievement In Elementary Schools, John Hilton Iii, Ross Larsen, David Wiley, Lane Fischer
Entrepreneurship Faculty Research
Open Educational Resources (OER) have the potential to replace commercial learning materials in education. An empirical examination of this potential was conducted, comparing the end-of-year mathematics test results of 12,110 elementary school students clustered within 95 schools from five school districts in the state of Washington in the United States of America. Of this group, 6796 students used open learning materials, and 5314 used commercial educational resources. When three years of test scores were considered, there were no statistically significant differences in the exam scores of students who used open versus commercial curriculum materials. The lack of statistical significance may …

The Perceptions And Effects Of Schools' Names On Black Professional Educators And Their Students, Gregg Suzanne Ferguson
The Perceptions And Effects Of Schools' Names On Black Professional Educators And Their Students, Gregg Suzanne Ferguson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
It is obvious that there is a variety of perspectives that the educational environment needs to sensitively reflect to serve a diverse society equitably. In Southern communities, in particular, distortions of heritage are conflated with local governance that control public money, public memory, public value, public health, and public landscape, including the public school environment and marginalizes further historically marginalized groups. This qualitative study was grounded in critical race and cultural geography theories that examined dominant paradigms in the educational environment which shape identity. This dissertation explored the effect(s) of race and racism in the educational environment from the perspective …
The Impact Of Intervention Measures On Sexual Harassment In The Film And Television Industry, Ben Eng, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao
The Impact Of Intervention Measures On Sexual Harassment In The Film And Television Industry, Ben Eng, Ralph E. Mckinney, Lawrence Shao
Management Faculty Research
Since 2017, increased sexual harassment incidents have been reported in Hollywood; yet, little guidance has been offered on how organizations, which are informally governed by their network members, can effectively reduce sexual harassment. Building upon the theory of network governance, this paper suggests social mechanisms, which are used to coordinate and safeguard exchanges between Hollywood organizations, are more effective at reducing incidents of workplace sexual harassment than traditional strategies. These social mechanisms direct change to the macroculture through collective sanctions that damage the perpetrators reputation and restrict access to network opportunities. In essence, perpetrators become toxic assets that Hollywood avoids …
