Understanding The Influence Of Childhood Experiences On The Development Of Female Sexual Perpetrators Against Underage Individuals, Cassandra Marie Hershman Jan 2021

Understanding The Influence Of Childhood Experiences On The Development Of Female Sexual Perpetrators Against Underage Individuals, Cassandra Marie Hershman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Females who are perpetrators of sexual offenses are an understudied population. Due to societies’ failure to recognize that female perpetrators exist and to recognize their abuse when it occurs, sexual abuse completed by females often goes unreported. As a result, females engaging in sexual offenses, particularly pedophilia, is seen as a rare occurrence. However, research suggests that the actual rate of female pedophilic behavior is occurring at a rate three-four times higher than what is actually reported (Cortoni, Babchishin, & Rat, 2017). This study used anonymous data from 2,828 adult females in the IRB approved study [127810-11] Effects of Recalled …

Seasonal Variation In Home-Range And Core-Area Size In Verreaux's Sifaka, Brynn Harshbarger Jan 2021

Seasonal Variation In Home-Range And Core-Area Size In Verreaux's Sifaka, Brynn Harshbarger

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Primates living in seasonal forests must adapt to extreme fluctuation in resource availability. Verreaux’s sifaka ( ) live in Madagascar’s highly seasonal tropical dry forests and experience periods of extreme resource abundance and scarcity. Home- range and core-area size were measured using 95% and 50% kernel estimation, and 95% minimum convex polygons to compare seasonal shifts in space use based on resource availability. There have been no long-term space use studies on Verreaux’s sifaka; therefore, we do not know how their space use changes over time in an environment which is both highly seasonal and highly variable. Our study leverages …

American Mythology: How Storytelling Shapes Modern Cultural Perceptions, Kristin Maynard Jan 2021

American Mythology: How Storytelling Shapes Modern Cultural Perceptions, Kristin Maynard

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis will examine the American storytelling tradition, paying particular attention to American folktales and legends that arose as the nation expanded westward, such as the stories of Paul Bunyan, John Henry, Billy the Kid, etc. This text will utilize a lens of European narrative tradition (especially those which lent themselves to the written records of oral fairy tales and folktales) and trace the cultural significance and social purpose of these formative American stories. I will discuss the reasons why we so readily recognize the echoes of outside narrative traditions in American storytelling and the ethical implications of these narratives …

The Effects Of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals On Plants, Christian Mathew Pridemore Jan 2021

The Effects Of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals On Plants, Christian Mathew Pridemore

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a diverse group of chemicals which can have a detrimental effect on human health, affecting any physiological body system sensitive to hormonal changes. Human exposure to EDCs is inevitable due to their prevalence in modern living; EDCs are integral compounds found in everyday items with which humans interact and ingest. These, along with other indirect avenues leading to EDC exposure, pose a threat to both human health and to the health of wildlife and agricultural environments. Studies on the effects of EDCs on plants can be substantially informative and necessary for progress towards solving the …

Why American Parents Choose Homeschooling, Kimberly Mcfall Nov 2020

Why American Parents Choose Homeschooling, Kimberly Mcfall

Elementary & Secondary Education Faculty Research

This study explored factors that impact parents’ decisions to homeschool their children and examined the relationship between selected demographic factors and families that homeschool using an online survey snowball sample. Past research has focused on four main constructs: religious reasons, school safety, academic instruction, and a child’s special needs. This study elaborated on these four constructs and expanded to include other reasons parents might homeschool such as a need for family time, family travel, distance to school, financial reasons, or wanting to take a nontraditional approach to student learning. Findings suggest that academic instruction, family time and the desire to …

Narratives Of Displacement: Reconsidering Race And Archaeological Research In The Virginia Blue Ridge, Audrey Horning Jul 2020

Narratives Of Displacement: Reconsidering Race And Archaeological Research In The Virginia Blue Ridge, Audrey Horning

ASA Annual Conference

In the 1930s, Shenandoah National Park was established in the Virginia Blue Ridge through the displacement of nearly five hundred Euro-American families. At the time, hackneyed stereotypes about backward mountaineers were mobilized to garner public support for the condemnation of family farms and the institutionalization and sterilization of some of the most impoverished residents. The anger felt by the displaced and now their descendants has barely abated. That said, in the 1990s, a park service-sponsored archaeological project that I directed helped to overturn the prevailing narrative and transform park interpretation. While I am proud of that work, what I want …

“Knowledge Puffs Up”: The Evangelical Culture Of Anti—Intellectualism As A Local Strategy, Mark Ward Sr. Apr 2020

“Knowledge Puffs Up”: The Evangelical Culture Of Anti—Intellectualism As A Local Strategy, Mark Ward Sr.

Sermon Studies

The anti-intellectual strain of American evangelicalism, rooted in the populist Great Awakenings of the 18th and 19th centuries, has prompted much commentary from the 20th century to the present. Analysis of this anti-intellectualism has gained new currency today as evangelicals, who comprise 1 in 4 Americans, reject theories of evolution and manmade climate change. Scholarship on the subject has focused on the discourses of evangelical leaders at the national level. The present study, based on three years of fieldwork at an evangelical church, finds that an animus against intellectual elites is a potent "local strategy" for constructing a satisfying evangelical …

Faculty Perceptions And Teaching Practices For Transformative Change: Culturally Responsive Teaching In Pharmacy Education, Nicole Rockich Winston

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Cultural diversity training in pharmacy education has evolved from standalone lectures to longitudinal courses, service-learning initiatives, rotation experiences, and global health opportunities. This mixed methods study explored the perceptions, attitudes, and pedagogies of pharmacy educators who have incorporated culture diversity into their classrooms and clinic sites. First, 91 online surveys incorporating items from the Teaching Multicultural Attitudes Survey and the Multicultural Competency Teaching Scale were distributed to a random sample of pharmacy faculty who interface with cultural diversity. In total, 36 completed surveys were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and stepwise linear regressions. Following the survey, seven pharmacy faculty …

What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha Apr 2019

What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

The word “frontier” brings to mind certain connotations. The American public might think of Davy Crockett and his trademark coonskin cap, or of what came to be known as the Indian Wars as Americans pushed farther and farther west, conquering the rivers, plains, and mountains that lay just beyond colonial reach. But what was a frontier fort really like at the turn of the 19th Century? This paper explores that question through the study of archaeological artifacts left behind by the inhabitants of Fort Steuben. The fort, constructed in 1787, in what is now Steubenville, Ohio, was home to early …

Implementation Of Curbside Recycling, Samantha Kelley Apr 2019

Implementation Of Curbside Recycling, Samantha Kelley

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

My project is on the program of curbside recycling in Huntington, WV. Recycling came into play around the 1970s when reduce reuse recycle was introduced, since then many laws and implements have been created, some successful, and others not so much. There is a lot of research on recycling and some on curbside recycling but not much on the process of what it takes to implement the program. There have been bans that do not allow our recyclables to go where it once went, many questions to if it even gets recycled, and the education of how to recycle. In …

Graeco-Egyptian Papyrology, Michelle Young Apr 2019

Graeco-Egyptian Papyrology, Michelle Young

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

This research examines a Graeco-Egyptian papyrus in the MU ethnographic collection. The research involved a personal visit to the University of Cincinnati where the manuscript was authenticated, restored, and translated by Dr. Peter Van Minnen. Dated to ca. the 5th Century of the early Byzantine Period, this papyrus originated in the Herakleopolite nome of Egypt, an area which was under the control of Constantinople. This capstone is an endeavor to provide a contextual background, both the economic and social characteristics of the community, as well as the political world at the time. The manuscript provides a list of names, the …

Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas Apr 2019

Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Solar Minimum cycles and historical events

The catastrophic events of the late Holocene Era followed a cyclical pattern of Solar Minimum activity and described by ancient people in literature. Ancient literature documenting catastrophe is often unclear with catastrophic events mixed between fantasy and non-fiction, and consigned to mythology.

This project will demonstrate that environmental cycles impacting ancient civilizations were a result of cyclical patterns of Solar Minimum activity. Cyclical solar activity is historically observable, with warm periods lasting 540 years and cool periods lasting 400 years. The significance of the Solar Minimum activity occurrence shows patterns of civilization rise and …

Stigmatized Suspicion: The Who, What, And Why Of Political Conspiracy Theory, Katie Tennant Apr 2019

Stigmatized Suspicion: The Who, What, And Why Of Political Conspiracy Theory, Katie Tennant

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Political conspiracy theories have been ingrained in American culture since the country’s birth. People have long distrusted government, central authority, and other institutional bodies of power. This capstone research project examines this long-standing distrust in relation to conspiracy theories and the social implications intertwined with such “uncommon” beliefs. This study is conducted through one-on-one interviews with students enrolled in a political conspiracies course at Marshall University, a group containing both believers and non-believers. An additional method of the study is a Qualtrics survey available to all enrolled students of Marshall University. The combination of interviews and survey responses will aid …
