Do You See Yourself? The Effects Of Cultural Binaries Within Fantasy Young Adult Literature, Serena Holcomb
Do You See Yourself? The Effects Of Cultural Binaries Within Fantasy Young Adult Literature, Serena Holcomb
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Teenage years are critical for identity formation. Young adult literature is a form in which teenagers use to help form identities through relating with characters and situations. It is important to have literature available to teenagers that is relatable to a wide audience so that all young adults can find novels that they feel represented by. This study will be looking into the cultural binaries that could limit representation in fantasy young adult literature, such as white/other, abled/disabled, female/male. In this way, people can be aware of what is hindering or enabling, depending on our results, wide representation of different …
Queering Relationships, Ian Clark
Queering Relationships, Ian Clark
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
More research exists on LGBTQ+ populations than ever before, and research has been done on people in polyamorous relationships, but very little research exists on LGBTQ+ people and the way their sexuality/ gender identities influence their relationship dynamics (if they do at all). The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a link between sexuality and gender identity and an individual’s likelihood to pursue non-monogamous or polyamorous relationship dynamics. Participants were recruited through word of mouth and from online forums. The participants fully consented either online or in person for the survey or interview process, respectively. The …
What Steps Countries Are Taking To Prevent Sex Trafficking: The Relationship Between Law Enforcement And Sex Trafficking, Claire Joswick
What Steps Countries Are Taking To Prevent Sex Trafficking: The Relationship Between Law Enforcement And Sex Trafficking, Claire Joswick
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 4.8 million people currently trapped in sex trafficking at a global level. Human trafficking, which can also be referred to as modern-day human slavery, is an issue that never left the planet; only one that which adapted to the changing world. In this study, a large literature review has been complied to analyze the statistics gathered by government and non-federal organizations regarding the issue of sex trafficking, and how law enforcement is tackling this issue at a domestic and global level. Qualitative data collected in the form of interviews took place in …

Advocacy, Opposition And Self Perceptions: A Case Study, Tom Plaut
Advocacy, Opposition And Self Perceptions: A Case Study, Tom Plaut
ASA Annual Conference
This session will describe a fight led by local, largely blue-collar citizens of a town outside of Asheville against a well-funded and politically powerful developer’s proposal to build a 21-unit housing scheme on a three-acre plot bordering a community park heavily used by economically and culturally diverse groups. The paper will focus on changes of participant perceptions of self and of treatment by officials over the course of the controversy.

Re-Vision And Re-Representation : An Exploration Of Awarness And Voice In Marxism, Postcolonialism, Postmodernism And Psychoanalytic Theory, Stacy Sexton
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Awareness and voice are explored through case studies of Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. Karl Marx’s unaware and voiceless lumpenproletariat, Gayatri Spivak’s possibly aware but voiceless subaltern, and Saul Williams’ losers are compared. Williams’ loser may or may not have access to and engage in re-vision and re-representation, since the loser may exist at any point along the continuum of awareness and voice. Capitalism and the superstructure make everyone a loser. Thus, there is an inherent solidarity among losers, and it is this solidarity that may bring re-vision and re-representation to those who are unaware and voiceless. Unlike the …

Mikhail Bakhtin’S Heritage In Literature, Arts, And Psychology. Introduction, Slav N. Gratchev, Howard Mancing
Mikhail Bakhtin’S Heritage In Literature, Arts, And Psychology. Introduction, Slav N. Gratchev, Howard Mancing
Modern Languages Faculty Research
This volume celebrates hundred years of Bakhtin’s heritage: in September 13 of 1919 in the literary journal Den Iskusstva (The Day of the Art) was published the first work of Mikhail Bakhtin, Art and Answerability, the work that became his literary manifesto.
This book aims to examine the heritage of Mikhail Bakhtin in a variety of disciplines. To achieve this end, we drew upon colleagues from eight different countries across the world--United States, Canada, Spain, Great Britain, France, Russia, Chile, and Japan--in order to bring the widest variety of points of view on the subject. But we also wanted …

Seneca's Personification Of The Passions, Hannah Smith
Seneca's Personification Of The Passions, Hannah Smith
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
By personifying anger, life, and time in De Brevitate Vitae through the use of the active verb forms and possessive genitives, Seneca emphasizes the deleterious effect passions have on humans. This personification contributes to the loss of human agency passions produce. Therefore, not only Seneca’s words, but his grammar, support the idea that passions should be completely extirpated in order for humans to have a more controlled life. In making anger a person, Seneca gives it an agency he often doesn’t give humans, and in so doing he elevates this emotion to a level humans cannot control. In this way, …
Folklore And Myth, Michaela Wells
Folklore And Myth, Michaela Wells
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
The research focuses on the function of myth and folklore in society, and how different people view local Appalachian lore. Topics discussed also include common themes among myths of different origins. The study will include surveys sent out to Marshall University students and interviews with local residents. The findings from this research should show who engages in folklore and what it means to them.
Socialization And Solidarity In Workers' Unions Of The 21st Century Appalachia, Hannah Smith
Socialization And Solidarity In Workers' Unions Of The 21st Century Appalachia, Hannah Smith
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
As industrialization brought new jobs to major cities and coal mining to Appalachia in the late 17th century, laborers in the steel and coal industries worked sixteen or more hours a day in terrible conditions. These workers formed labor unions to ensure management provided fair wages, hours, and working conditions. From the mistreated coalminers’ violent fight for a union in Appalachia during the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain to the Wildcat strikes of the 1950s, solidarity in unions has been a significant focal point in the history of Appalachia. Therefore, it is important to interpret if a union continues …
Adopting Ancient Ways: Who Participates And Why, Larry Ross
Adopting Ancient Ways: Who Participates And Why, Larry Ross
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
As digital technologies are now easily accessible and readily available, most all persons in the United States possess a myriad of high-tech devices such as smart phones, laptops, tablets, or some facsimile thereof. Used every day by practically everyone of all ages, and from all demographics, these devices have become commonplace within every aspect of modern living, in the home, workplace, and available for public use. However, in lieu of this exponentially growing phenomena, many people, both on their own and within groups, have decided to engage in a re-learning of more ancient, non-technical living and subsistence strategies. Hence, it …
Public Library Usage Among College Students, Brianna Shelton
Public Library Usage Among College Students, Brianna Shelton
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
In this study, I argue that college students use public libraries in addition to or instead of academic libraries, regardless of whether they are a traditional or nontraditional student. I present research that has been conducted over the last decade about how millennials frequent a public library’s digital services, and that nontraditional students may venture to public libraries to better suit their needs. My own results have generated that students at Marshall University have visited a public library either since coming to college or before coming to Marshall, and that most of the programming and services they suggest would entice …
