“Lifted Moments”: Emily Dickinson, Hymn Revision, And The Revival Music Meme-Plex, Sarah Wadsworth Jan 2014

“Lifted Moments”: Emily Dickinson, Hymn Revision, And The Revival Music Meme-Plex, Sarah Wadsworth

English Faculty Research and Publications

This essay focuses on Dickinson’s poem “The Soul has Bandaged moments - ” (Fr360), placing it in relation to several interrelated hymns (Independent, Unitarian, and gospel) that share a common pattern of imagery deriving from the popular “Crowning Day” motif. Through a linked sequence of paired readings, it shows how connections between two loosely related texts sharpen and become meaningful when the two texts are brought into dialog with a third text. Juxtaposing three overlapping pairs of lyrics—first by Daniel Webster Whittle and William Channing Gannett, then by Philip Doddridge and Emily Dickinson, and, finally, by Gannett and Dickinson (with …

Imperially-Minded Britons: A Study Of The Public Discourse On Britain’S Imperial Presence In The Cape-To- Cairo Corridor, Military Reform, And The Issue Of National And Provincial Identity, 1870-1900, Timothy Ramer Lay Oct 2013

Imperially-Minded Britons: A Study Of The Public Discourse On Britain’S Imperial Presence In The Cape-To- Cairo Corridor, Military Reform, And The Issue Of National And Provincial Identity, 1870-1900, Timothy Ramer Lay

Dissertations (1934 -)

The Victorian era was marked by the incremental expansion of the British Empire. Such developments were not only of enormous importance for government officials and the contributors of that expansion, but for the broader general public as well, as evidenced by the coverage and discussion of such developments in the Cape to Cairo corridor in the national and provincial presses between 1870 and 1900. Transcending the discussions surrounding the politics of interventionism, the public’s interest in imperial activities— such as the annexation of the Transvaal, the First Anglo-Boer War, the Zulu War, Gordon’s mission into the Sudan, the Jameson raid …

The Sacramental Foundations Of Ecclesial Identity: Barrier Or Passageway To Ecumenical Unity?, Susan Wood Jan 2013

The Sacramental Foundations Of Ecclesial Identity: Barrier Or Passageway To Ecumenical Unity?, Susan Wood

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Two important events this year make it clear that ecclesiology still deserves a prominent place on the theological agenda. Pope Francis announced the creation of a council of cardinals to assist him in governing the world-wide Catholic Church. During the next assembly of the World Council of Churches the long awaited Faith & Order statement on The Church: Towards a Common Vision will be officially received. In this volume more than 40 authors (among whom well-known theologians such as André Birmelé, William Cavanaugh, Michael Fahey, Bradford Hinze, Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, Paul Murray, Bernard Prusak, Ioan Sauca, Myriam Wijlens, Susan Wood and …

Sacrament And Eschatological Fulfillment In Henri De Lubac's Theology Of History, Joseph Flipper Oct 2012

Sacrament And Eschatological Fulfillment In Henri De Lubac's Theology Of History, Joseph Flipper

Dissertations (1934 -)

Henri de Lubac, S.J. (1896-1991) led one of the most important developments within twentieth-century Catholic theology, the movement known as the nouvelle théologie. De Lubac's signature move was to return to early church sources to renew contemporary theology. This dissertation explores de Lubac's recovery of patristic eschatology for the contemporary age. While certainly responding to secularization, de Lubac also sought to respond to the "messianic" and apocalyptic shape of modern religious experience and political ideology. He argued that the source of secular messianisms was a dictotomy within Christianity between mysticism and the apocalyptic. The nouvelle théologie movement of the 1940s--from …

Why Can’T A Family Business Be More Like A Nonfamily Business? Modes Of Professionalization In Family Firms, Alex Stewart, Michael A. Hitt Mar 2012

Why Can’T A Family Business Be More Like A Nonfamily Business? Modes Of Professionalization In Family Firms, Alex Stewart, Michael A. Hitt

Management Faculty Research and Publications

The authors survey arguments that family firms should behave more like nonfamily firms and “professionalize.” Despite the apparent advantages of this transition, many family firms fail to do so or do so only partially. The authors reflect on why this might be so, and the range of possible modes of professionalization. They derive six ideal types: (a) minimally professional family firms; (b) wealth dispensing, private family firms; (c) entrepreneurially operated family firms; (d) entrepreneurial family business groups; (e) pseudoprofessional, public family firms; and (f) hybrid professional family firms. The authors conclude with suggestions for further research that is attentive to …

Diane Ravitch Revised?, Robert Lowe Sep 2011

Diane Ravitch Revised?, Robert Lowe

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Long associated with conservative views on education, Diane Ravitch recently has won wide acclaim from educators and others who do not identify with conservatism. The publication of The Death and Life of the Great American School System has been central to her newfound popularity because it is an effective critique of the market-based reforms she previously championed and because it defends both public schools and their teachers. As attractive as these stances are to defenders of public education, Ravitch’s book offers little evidence that she has backed away from an underlying conservatism that is complacent about inequalities inside and outside …

Knowledge And Thought In Heidegger And Foucault: Towards An Epistemology Of Ruptures, Arun Anantheeswaran Iyer Jul 2011

Knowledge And Thought In Heidegger And Foucault: Towards An Epistemology Of Ruptures, Arun Anantheeswaran Iyer

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation shows how Martin Heidegger and Michel Foucault, by questioning the very understanding of the subject-object relationship on which all epistemology is grounded, challenge two of its most cherished beliefs: 1. Thought and knowledge are essentially activities on the part of the subject understood anthropologically or transcendentally. 2. The history of knowledge exhibits teleological progress towards a better and more comprehensive account of its objects. In contrast to traditional epistemology, both Heidegger and Foucault show how thought and knowledge are not just acts, which can be attributed to the subject but also events which elude any such subjective characterization. …

Continuity And Development In Roman Catholic Ecclesiology, Susan K. Wood May 2011

Continuity And Development In Roman Catholic Ecclesiology, Susan K. Wood

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

An overview of the conceptualizations of the Catholic Church from the theology of Bellarmine to contemporary understanding of the church as communion shows both continuity and development from one concept to the next rather than an abrupt change to a new model that discards the model preceding it. This essay examines the church as perfect society, church as mystical body, church as sacrament, church as people of God, and church as communion, demonstrating that the various conceptualizations represent development, balance, correction, and a deeper penetration in the understanding and articulation of the prior conceptualizations. The church as body of Christ …

Micro-Ct Characterization Of Human Trabecular Bone In Osteogenesis Imperfecta, John Jameson, Carolyne Albert, Peter Smith, Robert C. Molthen, Gerald F. Harris Feb 2011

Micro-Ct Characterization Of Human Trabecular Bone In Osteogenesis Imperfecta, John Jameson, Carolyne Albert, Peter Smith, Robert C. Molthen, Gerald F. Harris

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic syndrome affecting collagen synthesis and assembly. Its symptoms vary widely but commonly include bone fragility, reduced stature, and bone deformity. Because of the small size and paucity of human specimens, there is a lack of biomechanical data for OI bone. Most literature has focused on histomorphometric analyses, which rely on assumptions to extrapolate 3-D properties. In this study, a micro-computed tomography (μCT) system was used to directly measure structural and mineral properties in pediatric OI bone collected during routine surgical procedures. Surface renderings suggested a poorly organized, plate-like orientation. Patients with a history of …

Malcolm X And The Limits Of 'Authentically Black And Truly Catholic:' A Research Project In Black Radicalism And Black Catholic Faith, Bryan Massingale

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Based on the talk he delivered during the 2010 Annual Meeting, Massingale here tackles head-on the unvoiced questions with which most of us have struggled at some point in our careers and ministries. He begins by unveiling the conflicted ramifications of ‘authentically black and truly Catholic’. Echoing Copeland’s reference in Volume IV to the price that black scholars and theologians must pay to “speak and act and live in truth” (p. 75), Massingale explores Malcolm X’s call for Black Nationalism and its synthesis and coexistence with Integrationism in current Black Catholicism. Finally, he asks a series of haunting questions about …

What Lies Beneath: Uncovering The Health Of Milwaukee's People, 1880-1929, Brigitte Marina Charaus

Dissertations (1934 -)

The true measure of a city's health is the health of its people. To truly understand how Milwaukee came to be known as the "healthiest city" in 1930, one must examine the health needs of common Milwaukeeans from 1880 to 1929. This study seeks to complement Judith Leavitt's pioneering work on public health in Milwaukee by presenting a picture, not of the politics of health reform, but of the personal side of health in the city.

Through an extensive examination of records including, but not limited to, coroner's reports, hospital records, personal correspondence, newspapers, cemetery data, and institutional records, a …

Joseph Smith's Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit Contrasted With Cartwright, Campbell, Hodge, And Finney, Lynne Wilson Apr 2010

Joseph Smith's Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit Contrasted With Cartwright, Campbell, Hodge, And Finney, Lynne Wilson

Dissertations (1934 -)

The dissertation is an historical–critical examination of Joseph Smith’s (1805–1844) sermons and writings from 1830 to 1844 to determine the scope of his doctrine on the Holy Ghost. Many biographers dismiss Joseph Smith as a product of his environment. Superficially, his thoughts on the Holy Ghost appear to fall within the mainstream of the enthusiastic outbursts of the Second Great Awakening, but a closer look shows that they are an abrupt and radical departure from the pneumatology of his day. To clarify the unique parameters of Smith’s pneumatology, it is necessary to place Smith’s views in a historical context by …

The Septuagintal Isaian Use Of Nomos In The Lukan Presentation Narrative, Mark Walter Koehne Apr 2010

The Septuagintal Isaian Use Of Nomos In The Lukan Presentation Narrative, Mark Walter Koehne

Dissertations (1934 -)

Scholars have examined several motifs in Luke 2:22-35, the "Presentation" of the Gospel of Luke. However, scholarship scarcely has treated the theme of nomos, the Septuagintal word Luke uses as a translation of the Hebrew word Torah. Nomos is mentioned four times in the Presentation narrative; it also is a word in Septuagintal Isaiah to which the metaphor of light in Luke 2:32 alludes. In 2:22-32--a pivotal piece within Luke-Acts--nomos relates to several themes, including ones David Pao discusses in his study on Isaiah's portrayal of Israel's restoration, appropriated by Luke. My dissertation investigates, for the first time, the Septuagintal …

Word And Faith In The Formation Of Christian Existence: A Study In Gerhard Ebeling's Rejection Of The Joint Declaration, Scott A. Celsor Apr 2010

Word And Faith In The Formation Of Christian Existence: A Study In Gerhard Ebeling's Rejection Of The Joint Declaration, Scott A. Celsor

Dissertations (1934 -)

In 1998, the theologian Gerhard Ebeling helped to initiate a rancorous, public debate among theologians in Germany over whether the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification presents "a consensus in the basic truths of the doctrine of justification" by co-editing the famous letter of protest. Why would he want to do this? The fact that some argue he held a distinguished position in ecumenical circles during the 1950s and 1960s makes this question somewhat intriguing. Moreover, how will this opposition impact the continuation of ecumenical discussions between Lutherans and Catholics?

Through a comparison of the Joint Declaration and the …
