The Study Of Kinesiology And Ignatian Spirituality: Parallels Through Exercise, Karl F. Kozlowski Jan 2015

The Study Of Kinesiology And Ignatian Spirituality: Parallels Through Exercise, Karl F. Kozlowski

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Spirituality relates to an internal movement towards the sacred, while kinesiology is the science of physical human movement. Strong, user-friendly communication between spiritual directors and retreatants is important to the development of an individualized productive retreat experience. To better facilitate guidance, it is helpful for directors to understand the parallels between spiritual exercises and the expertise of retreatants and for retreatants to understand comparisons between their professional and spiritual lives. The physical activity of St. Ignatius during his pilgrimage across Spain exemplifies the similarities between Ignatian spirituality and the science of human movement. Comparisons between Ignatian spirituality and kinesiology include …

Grounding Student Affairs In A Catholic Charism: The Journey Of One Faculty Member In Connecting Curriculum With Mission, Rich Whitney Phd, Mark Laboe

Teaching With Ignatius: Justice In Pedagogical Practice, Jeffrey L. Wilson

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The document Justice in the World, released in 1971 by the World Synod of Bishops, is an excellent basis for thinking about pedagogical practice in Ignatian higher education as a constellation of acts of justice. I describe here my personal experience (as an ambiguously Catholic faculty member) of teaching an upper division ethics course in the core curriculum and contextualize it in terms both of Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises and the 1971 Synod document.

Teaching A Catholic Philosophy Of Interpersonal Communication: The Case For “Soul Friendship”, Kathleen Glenister Roberts Sep 2012

Teaching A Catholic Philosophy Of Interpersonal Communication: The Case For “Soul Friendship”, Kathleen Glenister Roberts

Journal of Catholic Education

While social justice education has a rich and ancient history within the Catholic Church, academic disciplines have only recently begun to make the idea of social justice relevant within courses for undergraduates. In the communication discipline, debate about social justice has been lively and varied over the last two decades, and has provided rich entry points for philosophical interpretation. This paper considers interpersonal communication from the vantage point of social justice in the Catholic intellectual tradition. While the importance of friendship for society is nothing new (Aristotle addressed this issue in the Nicomachean Ethics), contemporary cultural hindrances to a just …

Through The Glass Darkly: New Paradigms For Counselors, Courage, And Spirituality In Contemporary Education, Judy Goodell, David C. Robinson Jun 2008

Through The Glass Darkly: New Paradigms For Counselors, Courage, And Spirituality In Contemporary Education, Judy Goodell, David C. Robinson

Journal of Catholic Education

This article proposes a paradigm shift in the view of the school counselor role. Evolving from the dualistic mind/body split of traditional physics, counseling has largely focused on problem identification and attempting to fix what is wrong. The new sciences of chaos and complexity invite a more holistic view, with the psychospiritual development of all students seen as an appropriate part of a comprehensive education. School counselors are well placed to mentor the psychospiritual development of all students and to facilitate the presence of spirituality on school sites. Two complementary models, Courage to Teach/Lead and the Ignatian model of Spiritual …
