We use density functional methods to identify the atomic configurations of H and D atoms trapped by O impurities embedded in bulk Nb. The O atoms are located at the octahedral position in the Nb body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice, and H (D) atoms tunnel between two degenerate tetrahedral sites separated by a mirror plane. Using nudged elastic band (NEB) methods, we calculate the double-well potential for O-H and O-D impurities and the wave functions and tunnel splittings for H and D atoms. Our results agree with those obtained from analysis of heat capacity and neutron scattering measurements on Nb with …

The Intelligence Debate: Bilingualism Vs Monolingualism - A Systematic Review, Muhammad Ayyaz
Communication Sciences & Disorders Graduate Student Work
The primary aim of the study is to find out whether bilinguals are more intelligent than monolinguals. The study synthesized relevant literature on the relationship between intelligence and bilingualism with regard to Raven's matrices, a widely recognized tool to assess abstract reasoning. Given the increasing prevalence of bilingualism because of migration and globalization, gaining insight into its cognitive influence is crucial (Surrain & Luk, 2017). Fluid intelligence (gf), crystallized intelligence (gc), and general intelligence (g) are included in this study. Across multiple databases, including ERIC, PsycINFO, and Web of Science, the study involved a comprehensive literature review of the studies …

Chemotherapy treatment-related side effects are common and increase the risk of suboptimal outcomes. Exercise interventions during cancer treatment improve self-reported physical functioning, fatigue, anxiety, and depression, but it is unclear whether these interventions improve important clinical outcomes, such as chemotherapy relative dose intensity. The National Cancer Institute funded the Exercise and Nutrition to Improve Cancer Treatment-Related Outcomes (ENICTO) Consortium to address this knowledge gap. This article describes the mechanisms hypothesized to underpin intervention effects on clinically relevant treatment outcomes, briefly outlines each project’s distinct research aims, summarizes the scope and organizational structure of ENICTO, and provides an overview of the …

We examined global records of accessible natural history voucher collections (with publicly available data and reliable locality data) for terrestrial and freshwater vascular plants, fungi, freshwater fishes, birds, mammals, and herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) and highlight areas of the world that would be considered undersampled and sometimes called ‘unexplored’ (i.e., have relatively low, or no evidence of, past sampling efforts) under typical Western-scientific descriptions. We also question what ‘unexplored’ may mean in these contexts and explain how replacing the term in favor of more nuanced phrasing (e.g., ‘biodiversity blindspots,’ which emphasizes the lack of publicly available data about specimens) can …

The rising threat of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria emphasizes the need for new therapeutic strategies. This review focuses on bacterial transcription factors (TFs), which play crucial roles in bacterial pathogenesis. We discuss the regulatory roles of these factors through examples, and we outline potential therapeutic strategies targeting bacterial TFs. Specifically, we discuss the use of small molecules to interfere with TF function and the development of transcription factor decoys, oligonucleotides that compete with promoters for TF binding. We also cover peptides that target the interaction between the bacterial TF and other factors, such as RNA polymerase, and the targeting …

Tunnel ionization (TI) underlies many important ultrafast processes, such as high-harmonic generation and strong-field ionization. Among the existing theories for TI, many-electron weak-field asymptotic theory (ME-WFAT) is by design capable of accurately treating many-electron effects in TI. An earlier version of ME-WFAT relied on an accurate representation of the asymptotic tail of the orbitals, which hindered its implementation in Gaussian-basis-set-based quantum chemistry programs. In this work, we reformulate ME-WFAT in the integral representation, which makes the quality of the asymptotic tail much less critical, hence greatly facilitating its implementation in standard quantum chemistry packages. The integral reformulation introduced here is …

The spread of a graph G is the difference between the largest and smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of G. In this paper, we consider the family of graphs which contain no Ks,t-minor. We show that for any t ≥ s ≥ 2 and sufficiently large n, there is an integer ξt such that the extremal n-vertex Ks,t-minor-free graph attaining the maximum spread is the graph obtained by joining a graph L on (s −1) vertices to the disjoint union of (Formula Presented) copies of Kt and (Formula Presented) isolated vertices. Furthermore, we give an explicit formula for ξt …

Louisiana’s fifty-billion-dollar coastal restoration plan relies on selected interpretations of a small dataset of coastwide land measurements. In the 1990’s, the plan’s founders used a mathematically impossible interpretation of an improbable manipulation of the initial (1932-1990) dataset to justify their misconceptions regarding natural conditions; delta-switching; and a failing, 60-year restoration goal. In 2017, the dataset was updated to 2016 and used to suggest that land loss had slowed to -28 km2/yr (-1 football field/100 min) since 2010. We find that the dataset does not support this suggestion. Rather, we find the dataset supports our hypothesis that increasing precipitation in the …

Reilly Center Louisiana Surveys
The 2025 Louisiana Survey is the latest in an annual series of statewide surveys from the Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs at Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Mass Communication.
Reflecting the continuing evolution of survey research, we use two approaches in this year’s survey:
- In partnership with the research firm YouGov, we administered an online survey to a nonprobability sample of Louisiana residents who participate in the YouGov panel, selected to represent the state’s adult population geographically and demographically.
- We use a traditional probability-sampling approach to draw landline and cell phone numbers for a live-interview …

Understanding tropical climatology is essential to comprehending the atmospheric connections between the tropics and extratropical latitudes weather and climate events. In this review paper, we emphasize the advances in key areas of tropical climatology knowledge since the end of the 20th century and offer a summary, assessment, and discussion of previously published literature. Among the key areas analyzed here, we explore the advances in tropical oceanic and atmospheric variability, such as El Niño–Southern Oscillation and the Madden-Julian Oscillation, and how those teleconnection events have helped us to better understand variabilities in tropical monsoons, tropical cyclones, and drought events. We also …

An Early Web History Of Vaccine Skeptical Digital Rhetorics, Miles C. Coleman, Will Mari
Faculty Publications
Vaccine hesitancy is a public health threat stoked by vaccine skeptical rhetorics that circulate via the Web. While there is a body of work that studies the digital rhetorical tactics of vaccine skeptics, most of this work focuses on the Web rhetorics of the “Web 2.0” era, leaving the “Web 1.0” era relatively understudied and, in turn, foreclosing opportunities to look back before moving forward in the current moment. In efforts to yield glimpses into the antecedents of digital culture that have shaped contemporary vaccine skeptical discourses, in this article, we draw on systematically sourced website “snapshots” of vaccine skeptical …

De María De Portugal A Isabel Clara Eugenia: Luisa Sigea Y El Diálogo De Dos Doncellas Como Speculum Reginae, Carmela V. Mattza
Faculty Publications

Using Games And Activities To Increase Inhibitory Control Skills In Kindergarten-Aged Children, Kailyn Lambert, Cynthia F. Dicarlo, Denise Rueter
Faculty Publications
Executive function skills are critical in early development, as they “form the foundation for children’s ability to self-regulate” (McLelland, et al., 2016, p. 242). Inhibitory control, one component of executive function, is the ability to suppress or inhibit responses to distractions when completing a task. The purpose of this study was to improve children’s inhibitory control in the classroom through ageappropriate games, which promote controlling emotions and remaining on task. Three target children were observed in the classroom they attended with their regular teacher. Baseline data revealed that the target children needed improvement on inhibitory control skills, which included controlling …

Due to an abundance of shale gas, manufacturers are interested in meeting increased demands for alkenes, especially n-alkenes, by the dehydrogenation of light alkanes. While the catalysts for these reactions have been studied for many years, alkene selectivity and deactivation remain challenging problems. This work addresses these problems by the substitution of a localized indirect heating method (radio-frequency induction heating, RF-IH) for more traditional process heating employing steam or burners (e.g., natural gas combustion). RF-IH has been applied to the dehydrogenation of n-butane to C4 alkenes by utilizing magnetically susceptible catalysts based on Fe/Fe3O4 susceptors. Magnetic core-shell catalysts with either …

Poromechanical Solution For One-Dimensional Large Strain Consolidation Of Modified Cam-Clay Soil, Sheng Li Chen, Hai Sui Yu, Younane N. Abousleiman, Christopher E. Kees
Faculty Publications
A theoretical model describing the one-dimensional large strain consolidation of the modified Cam-Clay soil is presented in this paper. The model is based on the Lagrangian formulation and is capable of featuring the variability of soil compressibility (inherently due to the direct incorporation of the specific Cam-Clay plasticity model) and permeability, as well as the impact of the overconsolidation ratio (OCR). The derivation starts from the establishment of the incremental stress–strain relations for both purely elastic and elastoplastic deformations under one-dimensional compression conditions, and thereafter the coefficients of compressibility/volume change that are essential to the consolidation analysis. The governing partial …

The absence of formwork in 3D-printed concrete, unlike conventional mold-cast concrete, introduces greater variability in curing conditions, posing significant challenges in accurately estimating the early-age mechanical strength. Therefore, common non-destructive techniques such as the maturity method fail to deliver a generalized predictive model for the mechanical strength of 3D-printed structures. In this study, multiple machine learning (ML) algorithms, including linear regression (LR), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN), were developed to estimate the early-age flexural strength of 3D-printed beams under varying curing conditions, utilizing data collected from embedded sensors. Six input variables were employed for the ML …
Statistical Investigation Of Gypsum Crystallization Kinetics, Azmain A. Akash
Statistical Investigation Of Gypsum Crystallization Kinetics, Azmain A. Akash
LSU Master's Theses
Gypsum, a naturally occurring mineral salt, is frequently encountered in industrial processes such as seawater desalination and power plant cooling. Over the years, significant effort has been devoted to controlling the crystallization of gypsum through various chemical approaches, including acidification, chelating agents, and antiscalant polymers. Nevertheless, the cost associated with chemical treatments may be reduced by incorporating physical operational strategies to complement chemical methods in regulating gypsum crystallization.
This study systematically examines the comparative roles of chemical and physical entropy in the gypsum crystallization process to elucidate their respective influences on gypsum growth kinetics. Chemical entropy is manipulated by adjusting …
