Declining pollinator populations worldwide are attributed to multiple stressors, including the loss of quality forage. Habitat management in agricultural areas often targets honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) specifically, with the assumption that native bees will benefit from an 'umbrella species' strategy. We tested this theory using a conservation physiology approach to compare the effects of landscape composition and floral dietary composition on the physiological status of honey bees and Melissodes desponsa in eastern South Dakota, USA. The total glycogen, lipid and protein concentrations were quantified from field collected bees. Next-generation sequencing of the trnL chloroplast gene from bee guts was …

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a burgeoning epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. Abnormal blood pressure variations are prevalent in CKD and potentiate the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Certain genetic variants (angiotensin II receptor type 1 1166 A>C and angiotensin-converting enzyme insertion and deletion polymorphisms) and biomarkers such as interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor, soluble (s) E-selectin, homocysteine, and highly sensitive C-reactive protein have been shown to affect blood pressure variability among non-African CKD, hypertensive. and nonhypertensive CKD population. However, the contributions of the pattern, genetic, and environmental determinants of ambulatory blood pressure in African CKD have not been …

Gene flow between Bt and non-Bt plants can have implications for resistance management. In 2013 and 2014, field trials in Maryland and Louisiana measured gene flow in three refuge systems: (1) structured refuge stand of purple-seeded corn flanked on both sides by stands of yellow corn; (2) seed blend of yellow corn containing purple corn as refuges; and (3) seed blend of purple-seeded corn containing yellow corn as refuges. The presence of cross-pollinated purple kernels was used as a marker to quantify gene flow. In the structured refuge, cross-pollination between Bt and structured refuge plants averaged 5.4% on adjacent rows …

Early Detection Of Parkinson's Disease Using Deep Learning And Machine Learning, Wu Wang, Junho Lee, Fouzi Harrou, Ying Sun
Faculty Publications
Accurately detecting Parkinson's disease (PD) at an early stage is certainly indispensable for slowing down its progress and providing patients the possibility of accessing to disease-modifying therapy. Towards this end, the premotor stage in PD should be carefully monitored. An innovative deep-learning technique is introduced to early uncover whether an individual is affected with PD or not based on premotor features. Specifically, to uncover PD at an early stage, several indicators have been considered in this study, including Rapid Eye Movement and olfactory loss, Cerebrospinal fluid data, and dopaminergic imaging markers. A comparison between the proposed deep learning model and …

Wind power is one of the most potential energies and the major available renewable energy sources. Precisely predicting wind power production is essential for the management and the integration of wind power in a smart grid. The goal of this study is to predict wind power production with sufficient accuracy based on various factors using ensemble learning-based methods that consider the time-dependent nature of the wind power measurements. Essentially, the ensemble learning methods combine multiple learners to obtain an enhanced prediction performance in comparison to conventional standalone learners. In addition, they reduce the overall prediction error and have the capacity …
The Impeachers: The Trial Of Andrew Johnson And The Dream Of A Just Nation, Mark A. Neels
The Impeachers: The Trial Of Andrew Johnson And The Dream Of A Just Nation, Mark A. Neels
Civil War Book Review
Impeachment has been receiving much attention these days. I speak not of current events, however. As the United States continues its commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Reconstruction Era, and as new scholarly works appear on all manner of subjects from that era, it is to be expected that impeachment would get a much needed reexamination. To that end, Brenda Wineapple’s The Impeachers is a welcome—and one might say timely—addition to the emerging scholarship on this dark period in our nation’s past.
For Duty And Honor: Tennessee’S Mexican War Experience, Sam D. Elliott
For Duty And Honor: Tennessee’S Mexican War Experience, Sam D. Elliott
Civil War Book Review
Timothy D. Johnson of Nashville’s Lipscomb University has a well-deserved reputation as a leading historian of the Mexican War. In For Duty and Honor, he studies the political, military and social aspects of the war as it affected Tennesseans of the day, both at home and at the front. The result is a well-written book of remarkable depth that will set the standard for future state and/or unit studies on that oft-neglected war of expansion.

© 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The purpose of this study is to assess if the credit village is an effective way to develop a microcredit programme in China from the perspective of poverty reduction policy and risk monitoring. Cross-sectional household survey data from three credit villages in the Yunan County of China are analysed using 3SLS and IV probit models. The major finding is that the credit village loosens credit restrictions to some extent. However, it has no impact on educational expenditures, medical expenditures, long-term assets, short-term assets and women's rights. It is our observation that the microcredit …
Everyday Crimes: Social Violence And Civil Rights In Early America, Donald Johnson
Everyday Crimes: Social Violence And Civil Rights In Early America, Donald Johnson
Civil War Book Review
Kelly Ryan’s Everyday Crimes provides perhaps the most in-depth study to date of violence against legally-dependent people in early America. Focusing on the legal experiences these oft-abused groups – married white women, enslaved and free blacks, and young servants and apprentices – from the colonial period to the Jeffersonian era, Ryan argues that, through direct action to draw attention to cruelty and resist violence in their everyday lives, these individuals brought about a shift in cultural and legal norms. As a result, by the first decades of the nineteenth century, a tradition of defending vulnerable populations had emerged which, while …
The Three-Cornered War: The Union, The Confederacy, And Native Peoples In The Fight For The West, Alexandra Elise Stern
The Three-Cornered War: The Union, The Confederacy, And Native Peoples In The Fight For The West, Alexandra Elise Stern
Civil War Book Review
In the early 1860s, far from the American Civil War’s traditional Eastern and even “Western” theaters, New Mexico Territory quickly became an American, Confederate, Diné, and Apache battleground for control of the region. Despite its strategic value to all parties and the blood spilt to win it, the Southwest has remained a geographically and intellectually distant frontier in most historians’ conceptions of the war. Pushing back against the region’s neglected status in her latest book, The Three-Cornered War: The Union, The Confederacy, and the Native Peoples in the Fight for the West, Megan Kate Nelson effectively brings the Far …

Cwbr Statement On National Protests
Civil War Book Review
The recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others have called Americans to action in the midst of a national crisis. As historians of the American Civil War and Reconstruction eras, we understand that these tragic events are not isolated, random, or exceptional. They are a part of a broader legacy of racial oppression, economic injustice, and militarized policing that we have failed to confront and resolve as a nation...

Vicksburg: Grant’S Campaign That Broke The Confederacy, Fred L. Johnson
Civil War Book Review
In the “Acknowledgements” for Vicksburg: Grant’s Campaign That Broke the Confederacy, Donald L. Miller states that when he started doing research for the book in 1997, he went to Vicksburg and started exploring “by car, on foot, and in a rented power boat the broken terrain and serpentine waterways that” General Ulysses S. Grant “had to surmount to take the town.” (503) He did that to gain an awareness that empowered him to produce a history of the campaign that had a “palpable feel for the physical setting in which the characters” interacted, and in which “the story …

Spring 2020, Andrew Hargroder
Civil War Book Review
As the grief of spring rolls into the outrage of summer, Americans are witnessing a cataclysm over the soul of their nation. We face a multitude of crises that stem from unresolved pathologies of America’s recent and distant past. The erosion of democratic norms and institutions, systematic racism, income inequality, poverty, and more – all with us before 2020 – have been laid bare and worsened by a pandemic and by toxic leadership at the highest levels of government. Amidst these calamities, we also face a crisis of history and historical memory. At its heart, it is a struggle over …
A Republic In The Ranks: Loyalty And Dissent In The Army Of The Potomac, Allen C. Guelzo
A Republic In The Ranks: Loyalty And Dissent In The Army Of The Potomac, Allen C. Guelzo
Civil War Book Review
American politics is supposed to be about separation -- separation of powers, separation of church and state, and particularly separation of the military from civilian political process. One look back at that series of ‘separations’ reminds us how often separation gets breached in practice, and never more so in the civil-military category than during the Civil War. This should not necessarily be a surprise. The Civil War was an overtly political war, fought over political issues (as opposed to a war of conquest and annexation, like the Mexican War, or national tetchiness, as was the War of 1812). Moreover, Civil …
A Campaign Of Giants: The Battle For Petersburg, Volume One, From The Crossing Of The James To The Crater, Fred L. Johnson
A Campaign Of Giants: The Battle For Petersburg, Volume One, From The Crossing Of The James To The Crater, Fred L. Johnson
Civil War Book Review
While it’s generally acknowledged that the American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – April 9, 1865) was the world’s first modern war, the myriad nuanced characteristics that earned the conflict such a designation may not be as well-known. In A Campaign of Giants: The Battle for Petersburg, Volume One, From the Crossing of the James to the Crater, author A. Wilson Greene peels away the layers of General Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign (lasting from spring and into the summer of 1864) to expose the realities that made the Civil War progressively more horrible in its lethality and …
Soldiers In The Southwest Borderlands, 1848-1886, Samuel Watson
Soldiers In The Southwest Borderlands, 1848-1886, Samuel Watson
Civil War Book Review
Soldiers in the Southwest Borderlands explores the diversity of western soldiers, their service and their lives before and after service, before, during, and after the Civil War. Each essay explores a single individual, all of them enlisted soldiers rather than officers, some U.S. regular army, including African American George Goldsby, others Mexican militiaman Santiago Brito, Nuevomexicano volunteer Homobono Carabajal, and Apache scouts Mickey Free and John Rope. Repeated themes are resilience and the benefits of service, including a notable degree of integration by white soldiers into western society, whether by European immigrants (Emil Bode and Louis Geck) or easterners (Harry …

© 2020 The Authors. Di versity and Distributions Published by SBI. Here we explore the use of community phylogenetics as a tool to document patterns of biodiversity in the Fitzcarrald region, a remote area in Southwestern Amazonia. For these analyses, we subdivide the region into basin-wide assemblages encompassing the headwaters of four Amazonian tributaries (Urubamba, Yuruá, Purús and Las Piedras basins), and habitat types: river channels, terra firme (non-floodplain) streams, and floodplain lakes. We present a robust, well-documented collection of fishes from the region including 272 species collected from 132 field sites over 63 field days and four years, comprising …
Men Is Cheap: Exposing The Frauds Of Free Labor In Civil War America, Holly A. Pinheiro Jr.
Men Is Cheap: Exposing The Frauds Of Free Labor In Civil War America, Holly A. Pinheiro Jr.
Civil War Book Review
Over 2 million men, including African Americans, served in the U.S. army during the Civil War. But questions remain about what may have (or not) motivated men to join the U.S. Army. Recent scholarship moves the historical conversation beyond discussions of military tactics and prominent figures to an important, but often marginalized topic—U.S. Army recruitment's financial logistics. Brian P. Luskey argues in Men is Cheap: Exposing the Frauds of Free Labor in Civil War America, that capitalism, class dynamics, and labor speculation is critical to understanding both the successes and shortcomings of U.S. Army recruitment. Luskey places U.S. Army …
The False Cause: Fraud, Fabrication, And White Supremacy In Confederate Memory, Gaines M. Foster
The False Cause: Fraud, Fabrication, And White Supremacy In Confederate Memory, Gaines M. Foster
Civil War Book Review
A historian on a mission, Adam H. Domby seeks to expose how “white supremacy, fraud, and fabricated memories have fundamentally shaped how Americans, especially white southerners, recalled the past.” He explains how the Lost Cause, or The False Cause, to use the book’s wonderful title, made states’ rights not slavery the cause of the war, ignored the significant dissent in the Confederacy, exaggerated the “military prowess of Confederate soldiers,” made slavery seem benign, and ignored the “role of racism in American history.” At the beginning of the twentieth century, he concludes, “a Lost Cause narrative celebrating white supremacy became …
Lincoln On The Verge: Thirteen Days To Washington, Frank J. Williams
Lincoln On The Verge: Thirteen Days To Washington, Frank J. Williams
Civil War Book Review
During February 1861, President-elect Lincoln traveled by train from his home in Springfield, Illinois to the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. While he crossed through eight states, crowds gathered to greet him at train stations along his route. The trip was both personally and politically perilous, but it offered him an opportunity to establish himself as a visible leader. Widmer’s book shows the president’s trip as his first step to a preordained immortality.
Soul Liberty: The Evolution Of Black Religious Politics In Postemancipation Virginia, Shakeel Harris
Soul Liberty: The Evolution Of Black Religious Politics In Postemancipation Virginia, Shakeel Harris
Civil War Book Review
In Soul Liberty: The Evolution of Black Religious Politics in Postemancipation Virginia, Yale religious studies professor Nicole Meyers Turner designates the black church as the birthplace of black political activity. Turner utilizes a wealth of denominational meeting minutes, government documents and newspaper articles to craft a well-researched religious history. This history is grounded in the actions of black Virginian churchgoers’ quest to achieve a multifaceted form of freedom and autonomy which Turner dubs, ‘soul liberty.’ Religious institutions, the black Baptist churches of Virginia in particular, functioned as safe spaces for communal, social, and political exploration. Baptist conventions featured committees on …
Seceding From Secession: The Civil War, Politics, And The Creation Of West Virginia, Kevin Pawlak
Seceding From Secession: The Civil War, Politics, And The Creation Of West Virginia, Kevin Pawlak
Civil War Book Review
Former Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise famously classified the creation of West Virginia out of Virginia as the “bastard child of a political rape.” The story of West Virginia’s statehood is an intriguing mix of political bandying, court rulings, military actions, and societal differences between prewar Virginians living on either side of the Appalachian Mountains. Eric Wittenberg, Edmund Sargus, Jr., and Penny Barrick—lawyers or judges all—form a team well-equipped to examine Wise’s famous claim. As such, Seceding from Secession highlights the legitimacy of West Virginia’s statehood while placing President Abraham Lincoln and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in the center …
The Women’S Fight: The Civil War’S Battles For Home, Freedom, And Nation, Brianna Kirk
The Women’S Fight: The Civil War’S Battles For Home, Freedom, And Nation, Brianna Kirk
Civil War Book Review
Those familiar with Thavolia Glymph’s Out of the House of Bondage (2008) know how she expertly crafted her narrative and argument by compellingly revealing how the southern plantation household was a shockingly violent place, a public and political space where white plantation mistresses exerted considerable violence against enslaved women. In doing so, she brought new and much needed attention to how the Civil War and emancipation transformed gender roles in the South. Her latest book, The Women’s Fight, continues this impressive thread and expands out to examine the war’s influence and outcome on women across space, race, class, and …

Caught In The Maelstrom: The Indian Nations In The Civil War, 1861-1865, James F. Brooks
Civil War Book Review
The state of Arkansas seceded from the Union on May 6, 1861. Nervous about the political loyalties and strategic vulnerabilities of the Indian Nations that lay west of Fort Smith, the Confederate States of America crafted a military district that encompassed their region. Brigadier Ben McCulloch took command of the district with orders to “guard that territory against invasion from Kansas or elsewhere” with a force of “three regiments of volunteers.” CSA Indian commissioner Albert Pike set out to negotiate treaties of mutual support with the Nations, and soon had the Creeks, Seminoles, Choctaws, and Chickasaws in alliance. The Cherokees, …

© 2019 American Ornithological Society 2019. Published by Oxford University Press for the American Ornithological Society. The typical owl family (Strigidae) comprises 194 species in 28 genera, 14 of which are monotypic. Relationships within and among genera in the typical owls have been challenging to discern because mitochondrial data have produced equivocal results and because many monotypic genera have been omitted from previous molecular analyses. Here, we collected and analyzed DNA sequences of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) from 43 species of typical owls to produce concatenated and multispecies coalescent-based phylogenetic hypotheses for all but one genus in the typical owl family. …
