The Battle Of The Wilderness In Myth And Memory: Reconsidering Virginia’S Most Notorious Civil War Battlefield, Chris Mackowski
The Battle Of The Wilderness In Myth And Memory: Reconsidering Virginia’S Most Notorious Civil War Battlefield, Chris Mackowski
Civil War Book Review
Being “lost in the Wilderness” is an existential experience as old as the Bible, and therefore it’s no surprise that no Civil War landscape has more metaphoric power than Virginia’s Wilderness. The 1864 battlefield offers a unique Civil War twist that writers have taken advantage of since they started writing narratives about the battle. But aside from Stephen Cushman’s 1999 Bloody Promenade, no writer has examined the mythic power of the Wilderness as a thing unto itself. Adam H. Petty’s systematic study, The Battle of the Wilderness in Myth and Memory, casts light into that dark foliage and, …

From Manassas To Appomattox: Memoirs Of The Civil War In America, George C. Rable
Civil War Book Review
At least since 1867 when James Longstreet wrote a letter urging southerners to accept the reality of military reconstruction, he became one of the most controversial figures of the Civil War era. Political revulsion quickly led to extensive criticism of Longstreet’s military career focusing on his performance at Gettysburg. In letters and articles, Longstreet responded in kind, sometimes inconsistently, often defensively, and the battle has been joined ever since. Defenders of Robert E. Lee and the Lost Cause have often portrayed Longstreet, if not exactly as a villain, at least as a deeply flawed general who had let the Army …

Blind No More: African American Resistance, Free-Soil Politics, And The Coming Of The Civil War, Stephen E. Maizlish
Civil War Book Review
Jonathan Daniel Wells’ Blind No More: African American Resistance, Free-Soil Politics, and the Coming of the Civil Waris based on the Eugenia Dorothy Blount Lamar Lectures that Wells delivered in October 2017 at Mercer University in Georgia. Wells declares that his goal in this volume is to resolve the ongoing “struggle” in the United States to appreciate the role African Americans played in the sectional conflict that preceded the Civil War. By positioning African Americans at the “center of Civil War causation,” Wells believes he can achieve his goal and grant African Americans, slave and free, their rightful place …
The Great Partnership: Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, And The Fate Of The Confederacy, Chris Mackowski
The Great Partnership: Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, And The Fate Of The Confederacy, Chris Mackowski
Civil War Book Review
The cover of Christian Keller’s latest book, The Great Partnership, features a Mort Künstler painting titled Tactics and Strategy. A fatherly Robert E. Lee, seated on a crackerbox, rests a bare hand on the gloved forearm of Stonewall Jackson, crouching beside him and looking attentively at his commander. The 2002 painting captures a key moment in their partnership: the campfire-lit evening of May 1, 1863, at Chancellorsville. The painting’s title suggests their relationship: Jackson the tactician and Lee the strategist.
Alabamians In Blue: Freedmen, Unionists, And The Civil War In The Cotton State, Leonne M. Hudson
Alabamians In Blue: Freedmen, Unionists, And The Civil War In The Cotton State, Leonne M. Hudson
Civil War Book Review
The tumultuous years of the 1860s continues to fascinate Americans long after the truce between Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. Historians and scholars have not slowed in their production of works about the apocalyptic event. Alabamians in Blue by Christopher M. Rein is a recent offering that enriches the literature on the Civil War. It should be noted that this volume is endorsed by the Alabama Bicentennial Commission. This beautifully crafted book is a detailed analysis of the anti-Confederate movement in Alabama during the war. By the time the conflict was over, nearly 8,000 black and …

Camp Oglethorpe: Macon’S Unknown Civil War Prisoner Of War Camp, 1862-1864, Angela M. Riotto
Civil War Book Review
Located along the Ocmulgee River, Macon, Georgia, is known for its International Cherry Blossom Festival, the Ocmulgee National Monument, Mercer University, among other historic and cultural sites. Yet, as Stephen Hoy and William Smith argue in Camp Oglethorpe: Macon’s Unknown Civil War Prisoner of War Camp, 1862-1864, Macon is not known for having been the site of a prisoner of war (POW) camp during the American Civil War. Both long-time residents of Macon, Hoy and Smith recognized that they were living within minutes of an important site that had long since faded from public memory. Taking advantage of their …

An We Ob Jubilee: The First South Carolina Volunteers, Marcus S. Cox
Civil War Book Review
I often tell my students to never go to the movies with a desire to be educated because essentially movies are made to entertain, not educate their audiences. On the other hand, well-made movies are often authentic reflections of an event, time or place that can be educational. The movie Glory is responsible for offering millions of Americans their first glimpse into the contributions of freedmen and the volunteer regiments of former slaves recruited to fight for the Union army. In one scene, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment is joined by the 2nd South Carolina Volunteers Regiment …
Searching For Black Confederates: The Civil War’S Most Persistent Myth, Sharon A. Roger-Hepburn
Searching For Black Confederates: The Civil War’S Most Persistent Myth, Sharon A. Roger-Hepburn
Civil War Book Review
Countless anecdotes, narratives, rumors, half-truths, and myths have circulated since the Civil War. Perhaps the most persistent is the notion that thousands of free and enslaved black men fought as soldiers for the Confederate Army. So-called Black Confederates have been at the center of controversy and debate for decades, particularly in the realm of public opinion. Kevin Levin effectively challenges this myth in his recent book, Searching for Black Confederates. In an extensively researched and readable manner, Levin convincingly refutes the assertion that large numbers of African Americans served and fought as true soldiers for the Confederate States.

© 2020 by the authors. Public research institutions are encouraged to engage in industry sustainable collaboration in China. We develop an analytical framework based on the factor-process-outputs model and use a mechanism model by incorporating four elements (innovation climate, strategic partnership, collaborative mechanism, and the degree of participation) associated with the research institutions and industry collaboration. Using data collected from a face-to-face interview survey of 533 experts located at research institutions in seven Chinese provinces and one municipality who have collaborated with the seed industry, we use a structural equation model to identify important factors that affect innovation behavior. © 2020, © 2020 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group, on behalf of Shanghai Shangyixun Cultural Communication Co., Ltd. Equine parvovirus-hepatitis (EqPV-H) has recently been associated with cases of Theiler's disease, a form of fulminant hepatic necrosis in horses. To assess whether EqPV-H is the cause of Theiler's disease, we first demonstrated hepatotropism by PCR on tissues from acutely infected horses. We then experimentally inoculated horses with EqPV-H and 8 of 10 horses developed hepatitis. One horse showed clinical signs of liver failure. The onset of hepatitis was temporally associated with seroconversion and …

© 2020 the American Physiological Society. There are endocrine and immunological changes that occur during onset and progression of the overweight and obese states. The inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB kinase-ε (IKKε) was originally described as an inducible protein kinase; whole body gene deletion or systemic pharmaceutical targeting of this kinase improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance in mice. To investigate the primary sites of action associated with IKKε during weight gain, we describe the first mouse line with conditional elimination of IKKε in the liver (IKKεAlb-/-). IKKεAlb-/- mice and littermate controls gain weight, show similar changes in body composition, and …

© Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Purpose Studies suggest ketogenic diets (KD) produce favorable outcomes (health and exercise performance); however, most rodent studies have used a low-protein KD, which does not reflect the normal- to high-protein KD used by humans. Liver has an important role in ketoadaptation due to its involvement in gluconeogenesis and ketogenesis. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that exercise training (ExTr) while consuming a normal-protein KD (NPKD) would induce additive/synergistic responses in liver metabolic pathways. Methods Lean, healthy male C57BL/6J mice were fed a low-fat control diet (15.9% kcal protein, 11.9% kcal fat, 72.2% kcal …

Astrocytes generate robust cytoplasmic calcium signals in response to reductions in extracellular glucose. This calcium signal, in turn, drives purinergic gliotransmission, which controls the activity of catecholaminergic (CA) neurons in the hindbrain. These CA neurons are critical to triggering glucose counter-regulatory responses (CRRs) that, ultimately, restore glucose homeostasis via endocrine and behavioral means. Although the astrocyte low-glucose sensor involvement in CRR has been accepted, it is not clear how astrocytes produce an increase in intracellular calcium in response to a decrease in glucose. Our ex vivo calcium imaging studies of hindbrain astrocytes show that the glucose type 2 transporter (GLUT2) …

Practical Use Of Electronic Health Records Among Patients With Diabetes In Scientific Research, Yun Shen, Jian Zhou, Gang Hu
Population and Public Health Science Faculty Publications
AbstractElectronic health (medical) records, which are also considered as patients' information that are routinely collected, provide a great chance for researchers to develop an epidemiological understanding of disease. Electronic health records systems cannot develop without the advance of computer industries. While conducting clinical trials that are always costly, feasible and reasonable analysis of routine patients' information is more cost-effective and reflective of clinical practice, which is also called real world study. Real world studies can be well supported by big data in healthcare industry. Real world studies become more and more focused and important with the development of evidence-based medicine. …

Case-control mother–offspring pair design has been widely adopted for studying early-life and women’s pregnancy health. It allows assessment of pre-and perinatal environmental risk factors as well as both maternal and offspring genetic risk factors. Data arising from this design is routinely analyzed using standard prospective logistic regression. Such data has two unique fea-tures: the offspring genotypes are not correlated with maternal environmental risk factors given maternal genotypes, and offspring and maternal genotypes are related through mendelian transmission. In this work, built upon a novel regression model relating maternal genotypes to environmental risk factors, we proposed a novel retrospective likelihood method …

Background and Purpose The association between hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and stroke risk along with its subtypes is rarely reported. We aimed to investigate the association between HbA1c and the risk of incident stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes based on real world data from three healthcare systems. Methods We performed a retrospective cohort study of 27,113 African Americans and 40,431 whites with type 2 diabetes. Demographic, anthropometric, laboratory, and medication information were abstracted from the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network common data model. Incident stroke events including both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke were defined. Results During a mean follow-up …

In this paper, we introduce intrinsic non-locality and quantum intrinsic non-locality as quantifiers for Bell non-locality, and we prove that they satisfy certain desirable properties such as faithfulness, convexity, and monotonicity under local operations and shared randomness. We then prove that intrinsic non-locality is an upper bound on the secret-key-agreement capacity of any device-independent protocol conducted using a device characterized by a correlation p, while quantum intrinsic non-locality is an upper bound on the same capacity for a correlation arising from an underlying quantum model. We also prove that intrinsic steerability is faithful, and it is an upper bound on …

Fundamental Bound For Time Measurements And Minimum Uncertainty Clocks, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

We present a simple argument leading to a fundamental minimum uncertainty in the determination of times. It only relies in the uncertainty principle and time dilation in a gravitational field. It implies any attempt to measure times will have a fundamental level of uncertainty. Implications are briefly outlined.
Rotation And Spin And Position Operators In Relativistic Gravity And Quantum Electrodynamics, Robert F. O’Connell
Rotation And Spin And Position Operators In Relativistic Gravity And Quantum Electrodynamics, Robert F. O’Connell
Faculty Publications
First, we examine how spin is treated in special relativity and the necessity of introducing spin supplementary conditions (SSC) and how they are related to the choice of a center-of-mass of a spinning particle. Next, we discuss quantum electrodynamics and the Foldy–Wouthuysen transformation which we note is a position operator identical to the Pryce–Newton–Wigner position operator. The classical version of the operators are shown to be essential for the treatment of classical relativistic particles in general relativity, of special interest being the case of binary systems (black holes/neutron stars) which emit gravitational radiation.

Gaia16aye was a binary microlensing event discovered in the direction towards the northern Galactic disc and was one of the first microlensing events detected and alerted to by the Gaia space mission. Its light curve exhibited five distinct brightening episodes, reaching up to I? =? 12 mag, and it was covered in great detail with almost 25 000 data points gathered by a network of telescopes. We present the photometric and spectroscopic follow-up covering 500 days of the event evolution. We employed a full Keplerian binary orbit microlensing model combined with the motion of Earth and Gaia around the Sun …
