Tidal And Nonequilibrium Casimir Effects In Free Fall, Justin H. Wilson, Francesco Sorge, Stephen A. Fulling Mar 2020

Tidal And Nonequilibrium Casimir Effects In Free Fall, Justin H. Wilson, Francesco Sorge, Stephen A. Fulling

Faculty Publications

In this work, we consider a Casimir apparatus that is put into free fall (e.g., falling into a black hole). Working in 1+1D, we find that two main effects occur: First, the Casimir energy density experiences a tidal effect where negative energy is pushed toward the plates and the resulting force experienced by the plates is increased. Second, the process of falling is inherently nonequilibrium and we treat it as such, demonstrating that the Casimir energy density moves back and forth between the plates after being "dropped," with the force modulating in synchrony. In this way, the Casimir energy behaves …

Reliable Solar Irradiance Prediction Using Ensemble Learning-Based Models: A Comparative Study, Junho Lee, Wu Wang, Fouzi Harrou, Ying Sun Mar 2020

Reliable Solar Irradiance Prediction Using Ensemble Learning-Based Models: A Comparative Study, Junho Lee, Wu Wang, Fouzi Harrou, Ying Sun

Faculty Publications

Accurately predicting solar irradiance is important in designing and efficiently managing photovoltaic systems. This paper aims to provide a reliable short-term prediction of solar irradiance based on various meteorological factors using ensemble learning-based models that take into account the time-dependent nature of the solar irradiance data. The use of ensemble learning models is motivated by their desirable characteristics in combining several weak regressors to achieve an improved prediction quality relative to conventional single learners. Furthermore, they reduce the overall prediction error and have the ability to combine different models. In this paper, we first investigate the prediction performance of the …

Existence And Uniqueness Of The Karcher Mean On Unital C⁎-Algebras, Jimmie Lawson Mar 2020

Existence And Uniqueness Of The Karcher Mean On Unital C⁎-Algebras, Jimmie Lawson

Faculty Publications

The Karcher mean on the cone Ω of invertible positive elements of the C⁎-algebra B(E) of bounded operators on a Hilbert space E has recently been extended to a contractive barycentric map on the space of L1-probability measures on Ω. In this paper we first show that the barycenter satisfies the Karcher equation and then establish the uniqueness of the solution. Next we establish that the Karcher mean is real analytic in each of its coordinates, and use this fact to show that both the Karcher mean and Karcher barycenter map exist and are unique on any unital C⁎-algebra. The …

Mental Health Help-Seeking In Adolescence: An Exploration Of Variables Associated With Help-Seeking Intent In Schools, Sam Allouche Mar 2020

Mental Health Help-Seeking In Adolescence: An Exploration Of Variables Associated With Help-Seeking Intent In Schools, Sam Allouche

LSU Master's Theses

Internalizing disorders (including anxiety and depressive disorders) affect up to one third of adolescents ages 13-18. Although these disorders are associated with impairments in psychological, academic, social, and family domains, they are often left untreated. Schools have great potential to address this service-underutilization gap by identifying those students at risk for internalizing problems through mental health screening tools and by providing treatment at no cost for students. However, at the secondary level, school personnel partly expect high school students to initiate support for themselves. The present study advances research by exploring the variables related to adolescent mental health help-seeking intentions …

The Influence Of Teacher Parenting Style On Exclusionary Discipline Practices In Urban School Settings, Jennifer Vasquez Mar 2020

The Influence Of Teacher Parenting Style On Exclusionary Discipline Practices In Urban School Settings, Jennifer Vasquez

LSU Master's Theses

The overrepresentation of racial/ethnic minority students in suspensions, expulsions, and office discipline referrals has been a primary focus of research in racial equity in education. Excessive use of exclusionary discipline practices has been tied to decreases in academic achievement, school dropout, and an increased risk for juvenile justice system involvement. To date, much of the research on the exclusionary discipline gap has focused more on establishing that the problem exists than on factors that may be contributing to this phenomenon. What has been examined usually focuses on non-malleable variables, such as student demographic factors and school characteristics, while teacher variables …

Four-months bottom boundary layer observation was conducted to study winter and spring hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in the bay. Hourly waves, tides, currents and bottom suspended sediment concentration were measured using multiple optical and acoustic sensors attached to two tripod platforms. High-temporal resolution data indicated that during winter, salinity at northern bay was mainly controlled by northerly wind during …

Investigating The Role Of Torc1 And The Transcription Factor Sfp1p In The Regulation Of Hmo1 Gene In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Mathew Damien Smith Mar 2020

Investigating The Role Of Torc1 And The Transcription Factor Sfp1p In The Regulation Of Hmo1 Gene In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Mathew Damien Smith

LSU Master's Theses

HMGB proteins are eukaryotic, chromatin-associated proteins that play roles in both DNA dynamics and transcription regulation. Hmo1p is an HMGB protein in Saccharomyces cerevisiae that behaves somewhat like a hybrid between mammalian HMGB proteins and the metazoan linker histone H1. mTORC1, a protein complex containing the Tor1p kinase and a major regulator of cellular growth, is inhibited by both rapamycin and stress. It has also been shown to not only associate with Hmo1p at various gene promoters, but also regulate the HMO1 gene itself through direct binding. In this study, the Hmo1p-mTORC1 relationship was further investigated through two questions: 1) …

Antibiotic Resistance In Bacteria From Songbirds And Fitness Studies Following Environmental Stressors In Vitro, Leah R. Forsyth Mar 2020

Antibiotic Resistance In Bacteria From Songbirds And Fitness Studies Following Environmental Stressors In Vitro, Leah R. Forsyth

LSU Master's Theses

Since their initial discovery in 1928, antibiotics have been utilized for agriculture and human health purposes. The increasing use of antibiotics by humans and the rapid evolution of antibiotic resistance might be leading to the presence of more antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment. Understanding potential relationships between humans, bacteria, and the environment is important in order to study the spread and progression of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Several past studies have focused on oxidative stress, temperature stress, and antibiotic resistance in bacteria, but to my knowledge few if any have done a wide comparison between these environmental stressors and the …

Patronage, Audience And Ownership Of The Psalter Of Blanche Of Castile, Blair C. Gallon Mar 2020

Patronage, Audience And Ownership Of The Psalter Of Blanche Of Castile, Blair C. Gallon

LSU Master's Theses

The so-called Psalter of Blanche of Castile (Psautier latin dit de saint Louis et de Blanche de Castille, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, Paris, MS 1186 réserve) is a well-preserved illuminated manuscript made in Paris in the first half of the thirteenth century. As a devotional book, it witnesses the concerns of a thirteenth century individual of high rank, most likely a woman. As its modern name indicates, scholars link its existence to the Queen of France Blanche of Castile (4 March 1188 – 27 November 1252; r. 1226-34, 1248-52). No firm documentation, however, attests to the circumstances …

Model Development To Assess Groundwater Flooding And Levee Underseepage In New Orleans, Louisiana, Shuo Yang

LSU Master's Theses

Flooding is a major threat to New Orleans due to its geographic location and geologic condition. However, potential groundwater flooding is seldom studied and poorly understood even though groundwater level is expected high in the city. High groundwater level might result in groundwater flooding in low-lying areas. High uplift pore water pressures may cause strong underseepage and risk levee safety. The objective of this study is to assess the impacts of hydrogeology on groundwater flooding and evaluate potential underseepage-induced hazards along levees in New Orleans. In this study, a groundwater flow model development which involves stratigraphy modeling, groundwater flow model …

Inhibiting Iron Mobilization From Bacterioferritin In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Impairs Biofilm Formation Irrespective Of Environmental Iron Availability, Anabel Soldano, Huili Yao, Josephine R. Chandler, Mario Rivera

Faculty Publications

Copyright © 2020 American Chemical Society. Although iron is essential for bacteria, the nutrient presents problems of toxicity and solubility. Bacteria circumvent these problems with the aid of iron storage proteins where Fe3+ is deposited and, when necessary, mobilized as Fe2+ for metabolic requirements. In Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Fe3+ is compartmentalized in bacterioferritin (BfrB), and its mobilization as Fe2+ requires specific binding of a ferredoxin (Bfd) to reduce the stored Fe3+. Blocking the BfrB-Bfd complex leads to irreversible iron accumulation in BfrB and cytosolic iron deprivation. Consequently, given the intracellular iron sufficiency requirement for biofilm development, we hypothesized that blocking the …

Couples' Relationship Qualities And Child Behavior Problems, Erin Wallace Lovett Mar 2020

Couples' Relationship Qualities And Child Behavior Problems, Erin Wallace Lovett

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This dissertation examines couples’ relationship quality on child externalizing behavior problems. Family systems theory and Belsky’s determinants of parenting model posit that child behavior problems stem from problematic familial relationships and lack of support within the couple’s relationship. A secondary data analysis was conducted using data from the National Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. The independent variables represent couples’ relationship quality and are affection/support, relationship instability, and coercion. Dependent variables represent child behavior problems and are aggression measured when children are age five and age nine, and rule-breaking behavior when the child is age nine. To examine what …

Leveling The Viewing Field: The Impact Of Target Prevalence On Searcher's Functional Viewing Field, Juan D. Guevara Pinto Mar 2020

Leveling The Viewing Field: The Impact Of Target Prevalence On Searcher's Functional Viewing Field, Juan D. Guevara Pinto

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

It is well known that target prevalence impacts various cognitive processes. In visual search, rare search targets are more difficult to detect than common targets. The present research investigated novel questions about target prevalence, focusing on observers’ functional viewing field (FVF) during passive search tasks. The FVF is the area in a display where attention is focused and item processing is enhanced. According the FVF framework (Hulleman & Olivers, 2017), the size of the FVF is modulated by the ease of target detections, such that visual search involving difficult target detection reduces the FVF. Although this would suggest that low …

Molecular Structure, Chemical Exchange, And Conductivity Mechanism Of High Concentration Litfsi Electrolytes, Susith R. Galle Kankanamge, Daniel G. Kuroda

Faculty Publications

© 2020 American Chemical Society. High concentration lithium electrolytes have been found to be good candidates for high energy density and high voltage lithium batteries. Recent studies have shown that limiting the free solvent molecules in the electrolytes prevents the degradation of the battery electrodes. However, the molecular level knowledge of the structure and dynamics of such an electrolyte system is limited, especially for electrolytes based on typical organic carbonates. In this article, the interactions and motions involved in lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide in carbonyl-containing solvents are investigated using linear and time-resolved vibrational spectroscopies and computational methods. Our results suggest that the …

Functions Of Cdk/Cyclin Complexes In Endoreplication Regulation By The Cdk Inhibitor Siamese, Kai Wang Mar 2020

Functions Of Cdk/Cyclin Complexes In Endoreplication Regulation By The Cdk Inhibitor Siamese, Kai Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Arabidopsis trichome (leaf hair) is a specialized single cell extended from epidermal cell on the leaves, which is a typical endoreplication and is also known as endoreduplication. Several D-type cyclins were tested to check the cell division in trichome, and the trichome expressing either CYCB1;2 or CDKB2;2 cannot trigger cell division, even if simultaneous expression of CYCB1;2 and CDKB2;2 failed to produce mitosis in trichome. Only CYCD3;1 specifically promotes multicellular trichome. cdkb1;1cdbk1;2 double mutants and sim cdkb1;1cdkb1;2 triple mutants exhibit the phenotype similar to the wild type and very limited cell division respectively. Overexpression of a CDKB1;1 dominant-negative construct that …

Conservation Potential And Mechanisms Of Avian Decline In Experimentally Fragmented And Regenerating Amazonian Rainforest, Cameron Lee Rutt Mar 2020

Conservation Potential And Mechanisms Of Avian Decline In Experimentally Fragmented And Regenerating Amazonian Rainforest, Cameron Lee Rutt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Twenty percent of the Brazilian Amazon has now been deforested, and deforestation rates are increasing. Yet the process of deforestation threatens biodiversity beyond the direct loss of habitat by inducing edge effects and creating forest fragments. In the tropics, among the most vulnerable birds to these human disturbances are a group of insectivorous species that forage on or near the ground. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed to explain these declines, but evidence for these hypotheses remains scare or equivocal. In this study, we examine three proposed mechanisms—physiological constraints to bright light, reduced breeding activity and nest success, and …

Social Contexts And Disconnectedness: A Mixed Methods Analysis Of Interrelated Effects Of Families, Peers, And Schools On African American Youth, Danielle R. Eugene

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Youth disconnection, characterized as no school and no work in emerging adulthood, is widespread in American society with debilitating outcomes for each affected young person. Substantial rates of this phenomenon have been found for all youth groups; however, more recently the disconnection rate for African American youth has increased from 17.2% to 17.9% despite remaining flat or falling for all other major racial and ethnic groups. This study utilized a mixed methods approach to examine features of social contexts that explain how African American youth become disconnected from education and employment. This study involved analyzing qualitative data collected from student …

We determine the equatorial dipole component, through a Fourier analysis in R.A. that includes weights for each event so as to account for the main detector-induced systematic effects. For the energies at which the trigger efficiency of the array is small, the "east-west" method is employed. Besides using the data from the array with detectors separated by 1500 m, we also include data from the smaller but denser subarray of detectors …

Tracking And Parameter Identification For Model Reference Adaptive Control, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We provide barrier Lyapunov functions for model reference adaptive control algorithms, allowing us to prove robustness in the input-to-state stability framework and to compute rates of exponential convergence of the tracking and parameter identification errors to zero. Our results ensure identification of all entries of the unknown weight and control effectiveness matrices. We provide easily checked sufficient conditions for our relaxed persistency of excitation conditions to hold. Our illustrative numerical example demonstrates the performance of the control methods.
