Accurately estimating cause-specific mortality for immature insect herbivores is usually difficult. The insects are exposed to abiotic and biotic mortality factors, causing cadavers to simply disappear before cause of mortality can be recorded. Also, insect herbivores are often highly mobile on hosts, making it difficult to follow patterns for individuals through time. In contrast, the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton, spends its entire egg, larval, and pupal period inside a host stem. Therefore, with periodic sampling stage-specific causes of mortality can be ascertained. Consequently, we examined C. cinctus mortality in eight barley, Hordeum vulgare L., cultivars in two locations …

Leaf area is an important indicator of photosynthetic capacity in plants. Knowledge of the variation of leaf shape at an individual level or a population level can help by accurately calculate leaf area. Such calculations can help us to understand the life history strategies of plants, and allow us to better understand the influence of climate change on mean leaf area as an indicator of leaf size, which is closely related to stand yields and ecological ecosystem services. The Montgomery equation (ME), which describes a proportional relationship between leaf surface area and the product of leaf length and width, has …

Wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton, is an economically serious pest of cereals grown in North America. Barley cultivars were previously planted as resistant crops in rotations to manage C. cinctus, but due to increasing levels of injury to this crop, this is no longer a valid management tactic in Montana. Therefore, we aimed to understand antixenosis (behavioral preference), antibiosis (mortality), and potential yield compensation (increased productivity in response to stem injuries) in barley exposed to C. cinctus. We examined these traits in eight barley cultivars. Antixenosis was assessed by counting number of eggs per stem and antibiosis was assessed …

© 2020 Elsevier B.V. The FoodImageTM smartphone app transmits users’ photographs of food selection and food waste to researchers, and includes user-tagged information about waste reasons and destination. Twenty-four participants were trained to record food waste using FoodImage, food waste diaries requiring visual estimation of waste quantities, and diaries requiring scale weights. Participants used each method during three staged food-waste scenarios (food preparation, eating, and clean-out) in a randomized crossover trial. Two participants had extreme values for the weighed diary method; therefore, accuracy results are reported with and without these two participants’ data. Error was calculated as waste estimated with …

Unpacking The Decline In Food Waste Measured In Chinese Households From 1991 To 2009, Danyi Qi, John W. Apolzan, Ran Li, Brian E. Roe

Faculty Publications

© 2020 Elsevier B.V. Food waste reduction is an explicit goal for many countries, yet a paucity of high-quality primary measurements of food waste are available to inform policy. We analyze repeated physical measurements of discarded food from more than 37,000 households enrolled in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) from 1991 to 2009 and describe relevant food waste patterns and trends within households over a period of dramatic change. Over a period in which average real household incomes tripled, food discarded per person declined by about 20% on a quantity basis and by about 40% on a Calorie …

Faculty Publications

The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also known as electronic-cigarettes (e-cigs), has raised serious public health concerns, especially in light of the 2019 outbreak of e-cig or vaping product use-associated acute lung injury (EVALI). While these cases have mostly been linked to ENDS that contain vitamin E acetate, there is limited research that has focused on the chronic pulmonary effects of the delivery vehicles (i.e., without nicotine and flavoring). Thus, we investigated lung function and immune responses in a mouse model following exposure to the nearly ubiquitous e-cig delivery vehicles, vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG), used …

Revisiting Nucleation In The Phase-Field Approach To Brittle Fracture, Aditya Kumar, Blaise Bourdin, Gilles A. Francfort, Oscar Lopez-Pamies Sep 2020

Revisiting Nucleation In The Phase-Field Approach To Brittle Fracture, Aditya Kumar, Blaise Bourdin, Gilles A. Francfort, Oscar Lopez-Pamies

Faculty Publications

Twenty years in since their introduction, it is now plain that the regularized formulations dubbed as phase-field of the variational theory of brittle fracture of Francfort and Marigo (1998) provide a powerful macroscopic theory to describe and predict the propagation of cracks in linear elastic brittle materials under arbitrary quasistatic loading conditions. Over the past ten years, the ability of the phase-field approach to also possibly describe and predict crack nucleation has been under intense investigation. The first of two objectives of this paper is to establish that the existing phase-field approach to fracture at large — irrespectively of its …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. A remarkable exposure of tubular authigenic carbonates was found on the seafloor in the Dongsha area of the South China Sea (SCS). The tubular carbonates, around 2–3 cm in diameter and usually less than 10 cm in length, represent broken fragments of once-larger pipes that now protrude from muddy sediments. The morphology, carbon and oxygen stable isotope compositions, and trace and rare earth element contents of the carbonates were analyzed to decipher the mode of carbonate formation. The tubular carbonates exhibit a dark brown coating of iron and manganese hydrous oxides, …

Reduced Order Finite Time Observers And Output Feedback For Time-Varying Nonlinear Systems, Frédéric Mazenc, Saeed Ahmed, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We provide finite time reduced order observers for a class of nonlinear time-varying continuous-time systems. We use the observers to design globally asymptotically stabilizing output feedback controls. We illustrate our work in tracking dynamics for a nonholonomic system in chained form.

Twenty One Years After The Publication Of The Generalized Faustmann Formula, Sun Joseph Chang Sep 2020

Twenty One Years After The Publication Of The Generalized Faustmann Formula, Sun Joseph Chang

Faculty Publications

In this paper, I discuss developments of the generalized Faustmann formula since its publication in 1998. They included the formula for even-aged plantation management, uneven-aged management and forest valuation. These formula were followed by those for forest property taxation and valuation under taxation, the generalized van Kooten model, and the generalized Reed model as well as the uneven-aged management formula with carbon sequestration. The dynamic, incremental solution for the generalized Faustmann formula was then discussed. Pressler's indicator rate formula turned out to be equally applicable under the generalized Faustmann formula. Further, it enables the incorporation of risk preference to deal …

Social Inequalities In Flooding Inside And Outside Of Floodplains During Hurricane Harvey, Kevin T. Smiley Sep 2020

Social Inequalities In Flooding Inside And Outside Of Floodplains During Hurricane Harvey, Kevin T. Smiley

Faculty Publications

While previous research often finds flood impacts outside of conventional flood risk zones such as FEMA's 100-year floodplain maps, we have less of a sense of the social and demographic composition of the areas outside of floodplains that experience these impacts, even though social inequalities in flood risk and impacts more broadly is well-documented in the United States. Using data on 100-year floodplains, flood impacts, socio-demographic characteristics, and residential parcels, this study focuses on race as a primary marker of socio-spatial inequality to examine flooding inside and outside of floodplains during Hurricane Harvey in Greater Houston. Descriptive findings show that …

The literature is replete with clinical studies that characterize the structure, diversity, and function of the gut microbiome and correlate the results to different disease states, including obesity. Whether the microbiome has a direct impact on obesity has not been established. To address this gap, we asked whether the gut microbiome and its bioenergetics quantitatively change host energy balance. This paper describes the design of a randomized crossover clinical trial that combines outpatient feeding with precisely controlled metabolic phenotyping in an inpatient metabolic ward. The target population was healthy, weight-stable individuals, age 18–45 and with a body mass index ≤30 …

Weight loss in response to energy restriction is highly vari-able, and identification of genetic contributors can provide insights into underlying biology. Leveraging 1000 Genomes imputed genotypes, we carried out genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis in 551 unrelated obese subjects of European ancestry who participated in an intensively supervised weight loss program with replication of promising signals in an independent sample of 1,331 obese subjects who completed the program at a later date. By single nucleotide polymorphism–based and sib-pair analy-sis, we show that that weight loss is a heritable trait, with estimated heritability (h2 = 0.49) within the range reported for …

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) in both the United States (U.S.) and United Kingdom (U.K.) are on the rise. Identification of individual-level protective factors can better inform prevention and intervention efforts. However, the protective role of humor and grit are not yet fully understood. The current study (1) identified the potential protective associations of humor subscale (affiliative, self-enhancing, self-defeating, and aggressive) and grit on STBs among adults, and (2) explored the moderating role of country (U.S. or U.K.) on the relation between humor and grit with STBs. Participants (N = 832) completed self-report measures administered online: Humor Styles Questionnaire, Grit …

Obesity, The Most Common Comorbidity In Sars-Cov-2: Is Leptin The Link?, Candida J. Rebello, John P. Kirwan, Frank L. Greenway

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and lung disease. These diseases are the most commonly reported health conditions that predispose individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection to require hospitalization including intensive care unit admissions. The innate immune response is the host’s first line of defense against a human coronavirus infection. However, most coronaviruses are armed with one strategy or another to overcome host antiviral defense, and the pathogenicity of the virus is related to its capacity to suppress host immunity. The multifaceted nature of obesity including its effects on immunity can fundamentally alter the pathogenesis of acute …

Selection, Intake, And Plate Waste Patterns Of Leftover Food Items Among U.S. Consumers: A Pilot Study, Brian E. Roe, Danyi Qi, John W. Apolzan, Corby K. Martin

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Many campaigns promote the preservation and consumption of leftover food items as a critical household strategy to accomplish national consumer food waste reduction goals. We fill a gap in knowledge about the consumption and creation of leftovers in the United States by analyzing data from a pilot study in which 18 subjects tracked food selection, intake, and plate waste across all eating occasions for about one week. Subjects noted which items selected for consumption were leftovers, i.e., previously prepared but uneaten items that were stored for future consumption, and which unfinished items were saved to become leftovers. We found that …

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a commonly used sanitizer in the produce industry despite its limited effectiveness against contaminated human pathogens in fresh produce. Aqueous chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is an alternative sanitizer offering a greater oxidizing potency with greater efficacy in reducing a large number of microorganisms. We investigated the effect of aqueous chlorine dioxide treatment against human pathogens, Salmonella, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes seeded on sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes were spot inoculated (4.2 to 5.7 log CFU/cm2) with multi-strain cocktails of Salmonella spp., E. coli O157:H7, and L. monocytogenes and treated for 10-30 min with 5 ppm aqueous …

Beyond The Social Cost Of Carbon: Negative Emission Technologies As A Means For Biophysically Setting The Price Of Carbon, Brian F. Snyder Sep 2020

Beyond The Social Cost Of Carbon: Negative Emission Technologies As A Means For Biophysically Setting The Price Of Carbon, Brian F. Snyder

Faculty Publications

The social cost of carbon (SCC) is an estimate of the costs that society will incur because of the emission of one tonne of CO2. Because of the large uncertainties in the effects of climate change and the subjectivity of the discount rate, estimates of SCC range widely, from − 10.2 to 105 213$ t−1 in 2010 USD. Despite this range, the SCC has been used or proposed as a basis for a wide variety of policymaking including cost–benefit analysis and carbon taxes. The SCC suffers from several practical and philosophical weaknesses: it is anthropocentric, it neglects the acidification …

Efficient Solvent-Free Microwave Irradiation Synthesis Of Highly Conductive Polypropylene Nanocomposites With Lowly Loaded Carbon Nanotubes, Xingru Yan, Jingjing Liu, Mojammel Alam Khan, Stephen Sheriff, Sravanthi Vupputuri, Rajib Das, Luyi Sun, David P. Young, Zhanhu Guo

Faculty Publications

It was well established that microwave radiation was utilized initially to enhance the electrical conductivity of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) by introducing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) without using any solvent. High electrical conductivity was obtained in polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites with low CNTs loading levels. Under an inert gas protection, the CNTs were heated through the transformation of electromagnetic energy into mechanical vibrations. The surface of PP was easily molten by the heat generated by CNTs, then a well-formed CNTs network was built under proper microwave treatment period and subsequent hot pressing. CNTs loading levels and processing temperatures played an important role in …

We construct bundles Ek(A, F) → M over the complement M of a complex hyperplane arrangement A, depending on an integer k⩾ 1 and a set F= { f1, … , fμ} of continuous functions fi: M→ C whose differences are nonzero on M, generalizing the configuration space bundles arising in the Lawrence–Krammer–Bigelow representation of the pure braid group. We display such families F for rank two arrangements, reflection arrangements of types Aℓ, Bℓ, Dℓ, F4, and for arrangements supporting multinet structures with three classes, with the resulting bundles having nontrivial monodromy around each hyperplane. The construction extends to arbitrary …

Irreducibility Of The Fermi Surface For Planar Periodic Graph Operators, Wei Li, Stephen P. Shipman Sep 2020

Irreducibility Of The Fermi Surface For Planar Periodic Graph Operators, Wei Li, Stephen P. Shipman

Faculty Publications

We prove that the Fermi surface of a connected doubly periodic self-adjoint discrete graph operator is irreducible at all but finitely many energies provided that the graph (1) can be drawn in the plane without crossing edges, (2) has positive coupling coefficients, (3) has two vertices per period. If “positive” is relaxed to “complex,” the only cases of reducible Fermi surface occur for the graph of the tetrakis square tiling, and these can be explicitly parameterized when the coupling coefficients are real. The irreducibility result applies to weighted graph Laplacians with positive weights.

Population Structure Analysis And Identification Of Genomic Regions Under Selection Associated With Low-Nitrogen Tolerance In Tropical Maize Lines, Gustavo César Sant'ana, Fernando Garcia Espolador, Ítalo Stefanine Correia Granato, Leandro Freitas Mendonça, Roberto Fritsche-Neto, Aluízio Borém Sep 2020

Population Structure Analysis And Identification Of Genomic Regions Under Selection Associated With Low-Nitrogen Tolerance In Tropical Maize Lines, Gustavo César Sant'ana, Fernando Garcia Espolador, Ítalo Stefanine Correia Granato, Leandro Freitas Mendonça, Roberto Fritsche-Neto, Aluízio Borém

Faculty Publications

Increasing low nitrogen (N) tolerance in maize is an important goal for food security and agricultural sustainability. In order to analyze the population structure of tropical maize lines and identify genomic regions associated with low-N tolerance, a set of 64 inbred lines were evaluated under low-N and optimal-N conditions. The low-N Agronomic Efficiency index (LNAE) of each line was calculated. The maize lines were genotyped using 417,112 SNPs markers. The grouping based on the LNAE values classified the lines into two phenotypic groups, the first comprised by genotypes with high LNAE (named H_LNAE group), while the second one comprised genotypes …

Behavioral Strategies During Incubation Influence Nest And Female Survival Of Wild Turkeys, Ashley K. Lohr, James A. Martin, Gregory T. Wann, Bradley S. Cohen, Bret A. Collier, Michael J. Chamberlain Sep 2020

Behavioral Strategies During Incubation Influence Nest And Female Survival Of Wild Turkeys, Ashley K. Lohr, James A. Martin, Gregory T. Wann, Bradley S. Cohen, Bret A. Collier, Michael J. Chamberlain

Faculty Publications

Females must balance physiological and behavioral demands of producing offspring with associated expenditures, such as resource acquisition and predator avoidance. Nest success is an important parameter underlying avian population dynamics. Galliforms are particularly susceptible to low nest success due to exposure of ground nests to multiple predator guilds, lengthy incubation periods, and substantive reliance on crypsis for survival. Hence, it is plausible that nesting individuals prioritize productivity and survival differently, resulting in a gradient of reproductive strategies. Fine-scale movement patterns during incubation are not well documented in ground-nesting birds, and the influence of reproductive movements on survival is largely unknown. …

Phyr: Anrpackage For Phylogenetic Species-Distribution Modelling In Ecological Communities, Daijiang Li, Russell Dinnage, Lucas A. Nell, Matthew R. Helmus, Anthony Ives

Faculty Publications

Model-based approaches are increasingly popular in ecological studies. A good example of this trend is the use of joint species distribution models to ask questions about ecological communities. However, most current applications of model-based methods do not include phylogenies despite the well-known importance of phylogenetic relationships in shaping species distributions and community composition. In part, this is due to a lack of accessible tools allowing ecologists to fit phylogenetic species distribution models easily. To fill this gap, therpackagephyr(pronounced fire) implements a suite of metrics, comparative methods and mixed models that use phylogenies to understand and predict community composition and other …
