Yank And Rebel Rangers: Special Operatives In The American Civil War, Meg Groeling Jan 2021

Yank And Rebel Rangers: Special Operatives In The American Civil War, Meg Groeling

Civil War Book Review

Black approaches his subjects “clearly and without prejudice” in chapters dedicated to specific operatives in both armies. Black’s examination of Union Army ranger C. Lorain Ruggles and President Lincoln’s antebellum service in Captain Elijah Isle’s company of Independent Rangers in the Black Hawk War are of special interest. In the end, Groeling recommends Black’s Yank and Rebel Rangers “to anyone interested in partisan warfare in general and Civil War partisans specifically.”

Criticality In The Collapse Of Spherically Symmetric Massless Scalar Fields In Semiclassical Loop Quantum Gravity, F Benitez, R Gambini, S L. Liebling, J Pullin, F Benitez Jan 2021

Criticality In The Collapse Of Spherically Symmetric Massless Scalar Fields In Semiclassical Loop Quantum Gravity, F Benitez, R Gambini, S L. Liebling, J Pullin, F Benitez

Faculty Publications

In a recent paper we showed that the collapse to a black hole in one-parameter families of initial data for massless, minimally coupled scalar fields in spherically symmetric semiclassical loop quantum gravity exhibited a universal mass scaling similar to the one in classical general relativity. In particular, no evidence of a mass gap appeared as had been suggested by previous studies. The lack of a mass gap indicated the possible existence of a self-similar critical solution as in general relativity. Here we provide further evidence for its existence. Using an adaptive mesh refinement code, we show that echoes arise as …

Relating Dust Reference Models To Conventional Systems In Manifestly Gauge Invariant Perturbation Theory, Kristina Giesel, Bao-Fei Li, Parampreet Singh

Faculty Publications

Models with dust reference fields in relational formalism have proved useful in understanding the construction of gauge invariant perturbation theory to arbitrary orders in the canonical framework. These reference fields modify the dynamical equations for perturbation equations. However, important questions remain open on the relation with conventional perturbation theories of inflaton coupled to gravity and of multifluid systems, and on understanding modifications in terms of physical degrees of freedom. These gaps are filled in this manuscript for Brown-Kuchar and Gaussian dust models, both of which involve three scalar physical degrees of freedom. We establish a relationship of these models with …

The Impulse Of Victory: Ulysses S. Grant At Chattanooga, Charles R. Bowery Jr.

Civil War Book Review

David A. Powell’s The Impulse of Victory: Ulysses S. Grant at Chattanooga combines “personality-centric analysis” with a “solid understanding of the tactical and operational events” surrounding the fight for Chattanooga. The result is an effective understanding of the campaign as well as its “strategic and political context.”

Phenomenological Implications Of Modified Loop Cosmologies: An Overview, B F. Li, P Singh, A Z. Wang Jan 2021

Phenomenological Implications Of Modified Loop Cosmologies: An Overview, B F. Li, P Singh, A Z. Wang

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we first provide a brief review of the effective dynamics of two recently well-studied models of modified loop quantum cosmologies (mLQCs), which arise from different regularizations of the Hamiltonian constraint and show the robustness of a generic resolution of the big bang singularity, replaced by a quantum bounce due to non-perturbative Planck scale effects. As in loop quantum cosmology (LQC), in these modified models the slow-roll inflation happens generically. We consider the cosmological perturbations following the dressed and hybrid approaches and clarify some subtle issues regarding the ambiguity of the extension of the effective potential of the …

Matchless Organization: The Confederate Army Medical Department, Dale C. Smith

Civil War Book Review

Hasegawa shows that phenomena endemic to the Confederacy’s government and culture—namely material want and overwrought independence—hampered attempts to systematize and rationalize the Confederate Army’s medical department. Reviewer Dale C. Smith believes “anyone with a serious interest in the War of the Rebellion medicine should read it.”

Courage Above All Things: General John Ellis Wool And The U.S. Military, 1812-1863, Wayne Wei-Siang Hsieh

Civil War Book Review

Reviewer Wayne Wei-siang Hsieh writes that Harwood P. Hinton’s and Jerry Thompson’s Courage Above All Things: General John Ellis Wool and the U.S. Military, 1812-1863 “embraces multiple strands in the larger literature on the Old Army,” because the general’s career spanned such a long chronology in which important developments in the U.S. Army’s professionalization were made.

So Red The Rose, Meg Groeling Jan 2021

So Red The Rose, Meg Groeling

Civil War Book Review

So Red the Rose relates the Civil War-era sagas of two prominent fictive Mississippi families, both of which are “large, patriarchal, and structured to preserve the fiction of social and racial supremacy.” Historical figures—Grant, Sherman, and the family’s neighbor, Jefferson Davis—appear in the narrative as the families debate secession, sons fight and die for the Confederate cause, daughters fall in and out of love, husbands turn to drink, and their wives support them (while gaining a sense of superiority).

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are among the brightest and most energetic events in the Universe. The duration and hardness distribution of GRBs has two clusters(1), now understood to reflect (at least) two different progenitors(2). Short-hard GRBs (SGRBs; T-90 < 2 s) arise from compact binary mergers, and long-soft GRBs (LGRBs; T-90 > 2 s) have been attributed to the collapse of peculiar massive stars (collapsars)(3). The discovery of SN 1998bw/GRB 980425 (ref. (4)) marked the first association of an LGRB with a collapsar, and AT 2017gfo (ref. (5))/GRB 170817A/GW170817 (ref. (6)) marked the first association of an SGRB with a binary neutron star merger, which also produced a gravitational wave. Here, we present the discovery …

Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants-neutron stars and black holes-are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion …

We report results from searches for anisotropic stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds using data from the first three observing runs of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. For the first time, we include Virgo data in our analysis and run our search with a new efficient pipeline called PyStoch on data folded over one sidereal day. We use gravitational-wave radiometry (broadband and narrow band) to produce sky maps of stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds and to search for gravitational waves from point sources. A spherical harmonic decomposition method is employed to look for gravitationalwave emission from spatially-extended sources. Neither technique found evidence of …

We search for gravitational-wave transients associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi and Swift satellites during the first part of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 April 1 15:00 UTC-2019 October 1 15:00 UTC). A total of 105 GRBs were analyzed using a search for generic gravitational-wave transients; 32 GRBs were analyzed with a search that specifically targets neutron star binary mergers as short GRB progenitors. We find no significant evidence for gravitational-wave signals associated with the GRBs that we followed up, nor for a population of unidentified subthreshold signals. We consider several …

We measured the mid-infrared (MIR) extinction using Spitzer photometry and spectroscopy (3.6-37 mu m) for a sample of Milky Way sight lines (mostly) having measured ultraviolet extinction curves. We used the pair method to determine the MIR extinction that we then fit with a power law for the continuum and modified Drude profiles for the silicate features. We derived 16 extinction curves having a range of A(V) (1.8-5.5) and R(V) values (2.4-4.3). Our sample includes two dense sight lines that have 3 mu m ice feature detections and weak 2175 angstrom bumps. The average A(lambda)/A(V) diffuse sight-line extinction curve we …

We report results of a search for an isotropic gravitational-wave background (GWB) using data from Advanced LIGO's and Advanced Virgo's third observing run (O3) combined with upper limits from the earlier O1 and O2 runs. Unlike in previous observing runs in the advanced detector era, we include Virgo in the search for the GWB. The results of the search are consistent with uncorrelated noise, and therefore we place upper limits on the strength of the GWB. We find that the dimensionless energy density Omega(GW) <= 5.8 x 10(-9) at the 95% credible level for a flat (frequency-independent) GWB, using a prior which is uniform in the log of the strength of the GWB, with 99% of the sensitivity coming from the band 20-76.6 Hz; Omega(GW)(f) <= 3.4 x 10(-9) at 25 Hz for a power-law GWB with a spectral index of 2/3 (consistent with expectations for compact binary coalescences), in the band 20-90.6 Hz; and Omega(GW)(f) <= 3.9 x 10(-10) at 25 Hz for a spectral index of 3, in the band 20-291.6 Hz. These upper limits improve over our previous results by a factor of 6.0 for a flat GWB, 8.8 for a spectral index of 2/3, and 13.1 for a spectral index of 3. We also search for a GWB arising from scalar and vector modes, which are predicted by alternative theories of gravity; we do not find evidence of these, and place upper limits on the strength of GWBs with these polarizations. We demonstrate that there is no evidence of correlated noise of magnetic origin by performing a Bayesian analysis that allows for the presence of both a GWB and an effective magnetic background arising from geophysical Schumann resonances. We compare our upper limits to a fiducial model for the GWB from the merger of compact binaries, updating the model to use the most recent data-driven population inference from the systems detected during O3a. Finally, we combine our results with observations of individual mergers and show that, at design sensitivity, this joint approach may yield stronger constraints on the merger rate of binary black holes at z greater than or similar to 2 than can be achieved with individually resolved mergers alone.

We report an analysis of the planetary microlensing event OGLE-2018-BLG-1185, which was observed by a large number of ground-based telescopes and by the Spitzer Space Telescope. The ground-based light curve indicates a low planet-host star mass ratio of q = (6.9 +/- 0.2) x 10(-5), which is near the peak of the wide-orbit exoplanet mass-ratio distribution. We estimate the host star and planet masses with a Bayesian analysis using the measured angular Einstein radius under the assumption that stars of all masses have an equal probability of hosting the planet. The flux variation observed by Spitzer is marginal, but still …

Stability Analysis For Time-Varying Systems With Asynchronous Sampling Using Contractivity Approach, Frederic Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Miroslav Krstic

Faculty Publications

We provide new sufficient conditions for a generalized exponential input-to-state stability condition to hold. Our proofs use innovative trajectory based contractivity and cooperative systems arguments. Another key ingredient is a new variant of Halanay's inequality, which differs from prior Halanay inequalities because of its use of sampling. Our sufficient conditions allow arbitrarily long intervals between some consecutive sampling times, provided the intervals between consecutive sampling times are frequently small enough. This removes a significant limitation of prior results that relied on versions of Halanay's inequality that did not contain sampling. Unlike standard stability conditions, the upper bounds for the norm …

Caregiver Treatment Consumption In An Experimental Treatment Marketplace, Delaney J. Darragh Jan 2021

Caregiver Treatment Consumption In An Experimental Treatment Marketplace, Delaney J. Darragh

Faculty Publications

Behavioral economics is an approach to understanding consumer behavior by integrating behavioral science with economic principles. Behavioral economics incorporates traditional economic principles with operant learning approaches. There is limited research examining how individuals consume psychological and behavioral treatments. This is especially the case for treatments designed for children. The current study used data from a previously collected sample to explore gender differences in an experimental treatment marketplace (ETM). Experimental treatment marketplaces are generally used to evaluate choices between goods and services (e.g., types of behavior interventions). An ETM was developed to evaluate treatment consumption when levels of evidence differed between …

Stability And Observer Designs Using New Variants Of Halanay's Inequality, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Miroslav Krstic Jan 2021

Stability And Observer Designs Using New Variants Of Halanay's Inequality, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Miroslav Krstic

Faculty Publications

We provide a generalization of Halanay's inequality, where the decay rate is constant but the gain multiplying the delayed term is time varying. While the usual Halanay's conditions require the decay rate to be strictly larger than an upper bound on the gain, our less restrictive results allow times when the gain can exceed the decay rate. This allows us to prove asymptotic stability in significant cases that were not amenable to previous Lyapunov function constructions, and in cases that violate the contraction requirement that was needed to prove asymptotic stability in previous trajectory based results. We apply our work …

© 2021 American Chemical Society. We investigated the influence of an n-alkyl-PEO polymer on the structure and dynamics of phospholipid vesicles. Multilayer formation and about a 9% increase in the size in vesicles were observed by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and small-angle neutron/X-ray scattering (SANS/SAXS). The results indicate a change in the lamellar structure of the vesicles by a partial disruption caused by polymer chains, which seems to correlate with about a 30% reduction in bending rigidity per unit bilayer, as revealed by neutron spin echo (NSE) spectroscopy. Also, a strong change in lipid tail …
