Beacons Of Liberty: International Free Soil And The Fight For Racial Justice In Antebellum America, Kate Rivington Jan 2021

Beacons Of Liberty: International Free Soil And The Fight For Racial Justice In Antebellum America, Kate Rivington

Civil War Book Review

"One of the most original contributions to the history of the American antislavery movement, and antislavery thought more broadly,” Beacons of Liberty shows that different free-soil havens, such as Sierra Leone, Upper Canada, Haiti, and Mexico each offered distinct possibilities for freedom in Black Americans’ collective consciousness while providing “practical models of Black freedom” as well as destinations for emigrants.

A Glorious Liberty: Frederick Douglass And The Fight For An Antislavery Constitution, Leigh Fought Jan 2021

A Glorious Liberty: Frederick Douglass And The Fight For An Antislavery Constitution, Leigh Fought

Civil War Book Review

"Root . . . appears more interested in proving that the U.S. Constitution, if interpreted correctly, was not a document that would permit racism, especially once abolitionists had prevailed with the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments. The narrative has very little to say about Frederick Douglass, following the highlights of pro- or anti-slavery moments in relation to the Constitution more than the ebb and flow of Douglass’s ideas. Douglass appears less as a man with complex thinking processes that developed over time and in response to multiple factors than as an icon supplying optimistic quotes about the Constitution as a …

Until Justice Be Done: America’S First Civil Rights Movement, From The Revolution To Reconstruction, Ben Davidson Jan 2021

Until Justice Be Done: America’S First Civil Rights Movement, From The Revolution To Reconstruction, Ben Davidson

Civil War Book Review

Masur contends historians have overlooked a decades’-long, Black-led civil rights movement that flourished in the nineteenth century. "Until Justice Be Done is necessary reading for any scholar of U.S. history,” and is a book that should "receive a wide readership beyond academia,” as Masur’s “non-polemical” examination of citizenship rights “may well challenge those of various political stripes to reexamine their idea and strategies for honoring, changing, or using the Constitution.”

(Sl(N),Q) -Opers, The Q-Langlands Correspondence, And Quantum/Classical Duality, Peter Koroteev, Daniel S. Sage, Anton M. Zeitlin Jan 2021

(Sl(N),Q) -Opers, The Q-Langlands Correspondence, And Quantum/Classical Duality, Peter Koroteev, Daniel S. Sage, Anton M. Zeitlin

Faculty Publications

A special case of the geometric Langlands correspondence is given by the relationship between solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the Gaudin model and opers-connections on the projective line with extra structure. In this paper, we describe a deformation of this correspondence for SL(N). We introduce a difference equation version of opers called q-opers and prove a q-Langlands correspondence between nondegenerate solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the XXZ model and nondegenerate twisted q-opers with regular singularities on the projective line. We show that the quantum/classical duality between the XXZ spin chain and the trigonometric Ruijsenaars–Schneider model may …

The Bonds Of War: A Story Of Immigrants And Esprit De Corps In Company C, 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Ryan Keating Jan 2021

The Bonds Of War: A Story Of Immigrants And Esprit De Corps In Company C, 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Ryan Keating

Civil War Book Review

Reviewer Ryan W. Keating touts Diana Dretke’s The Bonds of War: A Story of Immigrants and Esprit De Corps in Company C, 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry as microhistory par excellence. This study of five friends and neighbors who fought alongside one another in the 96th Illinois after having migrated to the United States illuminates “the importance of local community and the ways in which those at home and in arms were bound through the common connection of the war and military service.”

Meade At Gettysburg: A Study In Command, Christopher S. Stowe Jan 2021

Meade At Gettysburg: A Study In Command, Christopher S. Stowe

Civil War Book Review

With Kent Masterson Brown’s Meade at Gettysburg: A Study in Command “a noticeable void has been filled,” reviewer Christopher S. Stowe writes. In this “outstanding campaign history,” Brown challenges the established portrayal of Meade when he argues that the general was “an effective operational commander and a relentless tactical commander who [was] fully aware of the strength and capability of his enemy.”

Unsung Hero Of Gettysburg: The Story Of Union General David Mcmurtrie Gregg, David J. Eicher Jan 2021

Unsung Hero Of Gettysburg: The Story Of Union General David Mcmurtrie Gregg, David J. Eicher

Civil War Book Review

Reviewer David J. Eicher writes that Longacre presents a “fine narrative,” in which the author weaves stories of the general’s personal life together with battle scenes that “are interesting and move along at a fast pace.” Longacre “clearly admires his subject,” Eicher writes, but the work “is not without offering criticism.” With Unsung Hero of Gettysburg, the general “has finally received a biography that delivers the details of a soldier’s full and interesting life,” over a century after Gregg’s death.

A Notable Bully: Colonel Billy Wilson, Masculinity, And The Pursuit Of Violence In The Civil War Era, Lorien Foote Jan 2021

A Notable Bully: Colonel Billy Wilson, Masculinity, And The Pursuit Of Violence In The Civil War Era, Lorien Foote

Civil War Book Review

With his “flair for storytelling,” Cray gives vibrancy to “scholarly conclusions of gender historians regarding the role of violence in nineteenth-century manhood,” Reviewer Lorien L. Foote writes. Foote agrees with Cray’s contention that Wilson’s story is one “’worth knowing,’” and she contends herself that “the story as Cray tells it, is worth reading.”

No Place For Glory: Major General Robert E. Rodes And The Confederate Defeat At Gettysburg, David A. Welker Jan 2021

No Place For Glory: Major General Robert E. Rodes And The Confederate Defeat At Gettysburg, David A. Welker

Civil War Book Review

In “an engaging, readable narrative,” Wynstra shows that “leadership breakdowns” in Rodes’s command “ultimately undid the fighting determination and sacrifice of” Confederate soldiers, which led “to the South’s Gettysburg defeat as surely as did the actions of more popularly famous officers and units.” No Place for Glory “will find a well-deserved place in the Gettysburg shelf of every interested reader’s” collection, reviewer David A. Welker writes.

Civil War Treasures: The Siege Of Vicksburg From Without And Within, Hans Rasmussen Jan 2021

Civil War Treasures: The Siege Of Vicksburg From Without And Within, Hans Rasmussen

Civil War Book Review

Regarding two diaries in LSU's special collections, one maintained by a besieger and the other by a besieged within Vicksburg, Rasmussen writes that while “both diarists continued their entries for several more months, their complementary accounts of the siege of Vicksburg remain the most fruitful part of these invaluable resources for studying the campaign to capture the famous Confederate citadel on the Mississippi.”

Summer 2021, Jeffery Hardin Hobson

Civil War Book Review

Each of the featured books can be considered microhistories, as their subjects range in scope from institutional studies of army-wide special units, community studies of regiments, and biographies of important leaders and men representative of their time. With these microhistories, the authors featured in this slim issue demonstrate the vibrancy and dynamism of Civil War military history.
