This prospectus took me about as long to generate as my 36 - year record of working on the issue of northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM) oxygen deficiency, or so I felt. There was so much to cover, but I focused on the issue of hypoxia on the Louisiana continental shelf from the early 1980s to present and my participation in the research and outreach. Not that I was ignoring other aspects of my academic research career (e.g., stone crab populations and their differences in physiology and larval development along the nGOM coast; settlement of crab megalopae, especially blue crabs, …

Mangroves fringe the coastlines of 54% of the world's nations but convey ecosystem services, such as carbon sequestration, that span administrative boundaries. Despite their high carbon sequestration efficiency and long-term storage capacity, few countries have assembled detailed mangrove carbon inventories. For example, Brazil, which detains the second largest mangrove area in the world, still lacks a detailed inventory on its blue carbon resources, largely due to the scarcity of integrated ecosystem-level (that is, carbon stored in biomass and soil combined) carbon assessments. Here we combine published and unpublished data to derive an inventory on ecosystem-level carbon stocks and carbon sequestration …

The active hydrodynamics and complex circulation patterns in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGoM) provide a dynamic scenario to investigate mesoscale responses of the size structure of phytoplankton communities to environmental variability. In this study, a large in-situ dataset acquired in inland, estuarine and coastal waters of the nGoM and U.S. East Coast were utilized to achieve a regional parameterization of the red-NIR ratio-based chlorophyll a (Chl a) algorithm for the high-spatial and spectral resolution Sentinel 3-OLCI ocean color sensor. Using an adaptive scheme, the algorithm was used in combination with other standard Chl a algorithms such as the Neural …

Aimed at the explanation of clear tidal signal and storm surge signals in a closed inland lake near the coast (the Huguangyan Lake), this work uses a combined approach with observations and model experiments. Huguangyan Lake is a closed inland freshwater coneless volcanic crater lake near the coast in tropical southern China, less than 5 km from an estuary. It has a diameter of about 1.5 km and relatively deep water of up to 20 m. Bottom pressure was measured from an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) for 10 days in September 2018 and 10 days in January 2019. The …

3D printing (3DP) is regarded as an innovation that contributes to automation in civil engineering and offers benefits in design, greenness, and efficiency. It is necessary to objectively analyze the current status and challenges associated with 3DP and identify future research directions to properly understand its construction applications. Previous research has focused more on the technical dimension of 3DP; however, the nontechnical dimension of the technology may hinder its implementation and thus must be paid particular attention to. This study presents a systematic review of the existing literature from both technical and nontechnical dimensions by combining quantitative and qualitative studies. …

This paper proposes a visual analytics framework that addresses the complex user interactions required through a command-line interface to run analyses in distributed data analysis systems. The visual analytics framework facilitates the user to manage access to the distributed servers, incorporate data from the source, run data-driven analysis, monitor the progress, and explore the result using interactive visualizations. We provide a user interface embedded with generalized functionalities and access protocols and integrate it with a distributed analysis system. To demonstrate our proof of concept, we present two use cases from the earth science and Sustainable Human Building Ecosystem research domain.

The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Use Of Academic Library Resources, Ruth Connell, Lisa Wallis, David Comeaux
Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly impacted higher education, including academic libraries. This paper compares the use of library resources (including interlibrary loan, website and discovery tool pageviews, database use, patron interactions, etc.) at three university libraries before and after the pandemic. The latter part of the 2019 and 2020 spring semesters are the timeframes of focus, although two control timeframes from earlier in those semesters are used to determine how the semesters differed when the coronavirus was not a factor. The institutions experienced similar patterns of use across many metrics.

University students expect much from their libraries. They want a place to study and research. They want a place to eat and hang out with their friends. They want to be able to relax between classes and find a quiet place to focus on work. They want a home away from home. As libraries have begun to accommodate these requests and shift away from the traditional ideas of a library, our students’ expectations are contradictory: have we lost the stereotypical idea of a library or are we in a renaissance where libraries are a third place for many students? © 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Research on Kilauea and O‐yama Volcanoes has shown that microbial communities and their activities undergo major shifts in response to plant colonization and that molyb-denum‐dependent CO oxidizers (Mo‐COX) and their activities vary with vegetation and deposit age. Results reported here reveal that anaerobic CO oxidation attributed to nickel‐dependent CO oxidizers (Ni‐COX) also occurs in volcanic deposits that encompass different developmental stages. Ni‐COX at three distinct sites responded rapidly to anoxia and oxidized CO from initial concentrations of about 10 ppm to sub‐atmospheric levels. CO was also actively consumed at initial 25% …

© 2021 American Chemical Society. Different polymer architectures behave differently regarding their dynamics. We have used a combination of dielectric spectroscopy, and fast field cycling nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to compare the dynamical behavior of two different polymer architectures, with similar overall molecular weight. The systems of interest are a bottlebrush polymer and a linear one, both based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). To verify the structure of the PDMS-g-PDMS bottlebrush in the melt, small-angle neutron scattering was used, yielding a spherical shape. Information about the segmental dynamics was revealed by dielectric spectroscopy and extended to higher temperatures by fast field cycling …

Conditional Granger causality, based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time series signals, is the quantification of how strongly brain activity in a certain source brain region contributes to brain activity in a target brain region, independent of the contributions of other source regions. Current methods to solve this problem are either unable to model nonlinear relationships between source and target signals, unable to efficiently quantify time lags in source-target relationships, or require ad hoc parameter settings and post hoc calculations to assess conditional Granger causality. This paper proposes the use of deep stacking networks, with dilated convolutional neural networks …
Second Law Of Entanglement Dynamics For The Non-Asymptotic Regime, Mark M. Wilde
Second Law Of Entanglement Dynamics For The Non-Asymptotic Regime, Mark M. Wilde
Faculty Publications
The distillable entanglement of a bipartite quantum state does not exceed its entanglement cost. This well known inequality can be understood as a second law of entanglement dynamics in the asymptotic regime of entanglement manipulation, excluding the possibility of perpetual entanglement extraction machines that generate boundless entanglement from a finite reserve. In this paper, I establish a refined second law of entanglement dynamics that holds for the non-asymptotic regime of entanglement manipulation.

Neutron-rich nuclei Eu162,164 were produced by bombarding a proton beam on a U238 target at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and mass separating the Eu162,164 products. New level schemes and new γ-ray transitions of the daughters Gd162,164 were identified from β-decay spectroscopy studies. Half-lives of the Eu162,164 were remeasured to clarify the previous ambiguous results. Two quasiparticle band structures were built and compared with neighboring nuclei. The β and γ bands were extended in Gd162 and a γ band was extended in Gd164. Half-lives of the isomeric states at (6-) 1449 keV in Gd162 …

Absorption Spectroscopy Of Quantum Black Holes With Gravitational Waves, Ivan Agullo, Vitor Cardoso, Adrián Del Rio, Michele Maggiore, Jorge Pullin

The observation of electromagnetic radiation emitted or absorbed by matter was instrumental in revealing the quantum properties of atoms and molecules in the early XX century, and constituted a turning-point in the development of the quantum theory. Quantum mechanics changes dramatically the way radiation and matter interact, making the probability of emission and absorption of light strongly frequency dependent, as clearly manifested in atomic spectra. In this essay, we advocate that gravitational radiation can play, for the quantum aspects of black holes, a similar role as electromagnetic radiation did for atoms, and that the advent of gravitational-wave astronomy can bring …

Nuclear Dynamics And Reactions In The Ab Initio Symmetry-Adapted Framework, Kristina D. Launey, Alexis Mercenne, Tomas Dytrych

We review the ab initio symmetry-adapted (SA) framework for determining the structure of stable and unstable nuclei, along with related electroweak, decay, and reaction processes. This framework utilizes the dominant symmetry of nuclear dynamics, the shape-related symplectic Sp(3, R) symmetry, which has been shown to emerge from first principles and to expose dominant degrees of freedom that are collective in nature, even in the lightest species or seemingly spherical states. This feature is illustrated for a broad scope of nuclei ranging from helium to titanium isotopes, enabled by recent developments of the ab initio SA no-core shell model expanded to …

We investigate the lattice and electronic structures of the bulk and surface of the prototypical layered topological insulators Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 using ab initio density functional methods, and systematically compare the results of different methods of including van der Waals (vdW) interactions. We show that the methods utilizing semi-empirical energy corrections yield accurate descriptions of these materials, with the most precise results obtained by properly accounting for the long-range tail of the vdW interactions. The bulk lattice constants, distances between quintuple layers and the Dirac velocity of the topological surface states (TSS) are all in excellent agreement with experiment. In …

Once We Were Slaves: The Extraordinary Journey Of A Multi-Racial Jewish Family, Julie Winch
Civil War Book Review
By tracing the family tree of a multiracial Jewish family in the Atlantic world, Leibman shows how "Racial identity, cultural affinity, faith and family ties counted for so much (and so little) in different settings and to different people," in a work that "resembles a huge mosaic. Each piece is beautifully crafted."

Civil War Book Review
"The digital copy of a diary kept by seventeen-year-old New Orleanian Minnie C. Hunt from August 1866 to March 1867 has recently been added to the Louisiana Digital Library . . . Hunt expresses her love of sewing, playing games, and spending time outdoors, but she also discusses loneliness, family conflict, financial anxiety, and physical pain. Hunt’s candid revelation of her own hardship makes the diary a particularly rich text for research on upper-class white women’s lives at the close of the Civil War, particularly in terms of their challenges and the resources to which they had access."

Civil War Book Review
"This issue of the Civil War Book Review is cohered around the often-intersecting phenomena of domesticity and religion in the Civil War era. Although historians have abandoned the notion that the nineteenth-century domestic sphere was hermetically cordoned from the public, the books reviewed herein demonstrate that studying the home as a distinct space remains an enlightening endeavor, even as the featured authors expand our understanding of what constituted the domestic sphere. The books reviewed in this issue also reinforce our understanding of religion’s significance to nineteenth-century Americans’ lives and identities. The authors further elucidate the ways in which Christianity helped …
