Constructing Large-Scale Complex Aquifer Systems With Big Well Log Data: Louisiana Model, Hamid Vahdat-Aboueshagh, Frank T.C. Tsai

Faculty Publications

This study introduces a lithofacies modeling method to construct a complex Louisiana stratigraphy model up to depth of 900 m using more than 114,000 well logs. Lithofacies intervals in one well log can be as many as 76. Louisiana comprises a number of interconnected aquifer systems and distinct geological features, such as angular unconformities, domes, and faults. The method contains processes of tessellation, discretization, translation, and interpolation to accommodate these geological features. First, the model domain is tessellated into tiles. Formations have the same dip direction within the same tile, but may have varying dip angles. Each tile is then …

Investigation Of Field Rut Depth Of Asphalt Pavements Using Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test, Weiguang Zhang, Xiao Chen, Shihui Shen, Louay N. Mohammad, Bingyan Cui, Shenghua Wu, Ali Raza Khan

Faculty Publications

This paper characterized field rutting performance of asphalt pavement based on Hamburg wheel tracking (HWT) rut depth. The rut depths were collected from 50 field pavement sections, and cores from the same test areas were obtained to conduct volumetric properties measurement and HWT test. The relationship between field measurements and HWT rut depth was evaluated; the ranking of HWT results and field rut depth among mixtures was also compared. An analysis of if the HWT rut depth underpredicted or overpredicted field rut depth, or they were equivalent was summarized. A field rut depth predictive model that consisted of HWT rut …

Potentials Of Sustainable Electricity Production From Sawdust By Small-Scale Wood Transformation Units: A Case Study In Cameroon, Kewir Fannyuy Veeyee, Nde Divine Bup, Dorin Boldor, Nkeng George Elambo

Faculty Publications

Wood processing produces large volumes of residues which, when not properly managed, pose an environmental problem in the vicinity and beyond. These residues mainly constituted of sawdust and wood shavings, possess important energy potentials that are largely underexploited in Cameroon. In this work, we investigate the possibility that sawdust generated by wood transformation units (WTU) in Cameroon can be used sustainably to render them self-sufficientin terms of electricity demands through the production of syngas in a gasification process. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are used in the research. Initially, a questionnaire was employed to quantify the sawdust produced in the …

Effects Of Simulated Nitrogen Deposition On Soil Microbial Community Diversity In Coastal Wetland Of The Yellow River Delta, Guanru Lu, Baohua Xie, Grace A. Cagle, Xuehong Wang, Guangxuan Han, Xiaojie Wang, Aixin Hou, Bo Guan

Faculty Publications

Due to the enhancement of human activities on the global scale, the total amount of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition and the rate keep increasing, which seriously affect the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems. In order to study the effects of N deposition on the soil structure and function of coastal saline wetlands, we established a long-term nitrogen deposition simulation platform in 2012 in the Yellow River delta (YRD). Herein, we analyzed the composition and diversity of the soil microbial community under different N deposition treatments (LNN, MNN and HNN, which stand for 50 kg N ha−1 yr−1 …

Quantum Gravitational Onset Of Starobinsky Inflation In A Closed Universe, Lucia Gordon, Bao Fei Li, Parampreet Singh Feb 2021

Quantum Gravitational Onset Of Starobinsky Inflation In A Closed Universe, Lucia Gordon, Bao Fei Li, Parampreet Singh

Faculty Publications

Recent cosmic microwave background observations favor low-energy-scale inflationary models in a closed universe. However, the onset of inflation in such models for a closed universe is known to be severely problematic. In particular, such a universe recollapses within a few Planck seconds and encounters a big crunch singularity when initial conditions are given in the Planck regime. We show that this problem of the onset of inflation in low-energy-scale inflationary models can be successfully overcome in a quantum-gravitational framework where the big bang/big crunch singularities are resolved and a nonsingular cyclic evolution exists prior to inflation. As an example, we …

Quasinormal Modes And Their Overtones At The Common Horizon In A Binary Black Hole Merger, Pierre Mourier, Xisco Jimenez Forteza, Daniel Pook-Kolb, Dadri Krishnan, Erik Schnetter Feb 2021

Quasinormal Modes And Their Overtones At The Common Horizon In A Binary Black Hole Merger, Pierre Mourier, Xisco Jimenez Forteza, Daniel Pook-Kolb, Dadri Krishnan, Erik Schnetter

Faculty Publications

It is expected that all astrophysical black holes in equilibrium are well described by the Kerr solution. Moreover, any black hole far away from equilibrium, such as one initially formed in a compact binary merger or by the collapse of a massive star, will eventually reach a final equilibrium Kerr state. At sufficiently late times in this process of reaching equilibrium, we expect that the black hole is modeled as a perturbation around the final state. The emitted gravitational waves will then be damped sinusoids with frequencies and damping times given by the quasinormal mode spectrum of the final Kerr …

Characterization, Immobilization, And Polymer Related Applications Of Watermelon Seed Powder, A Practical Source Of Urease Enzyme, Anthony Quan Quoc Mai Feb 2021

Characterization, Immobilization, And Polymer Related Applications Of Watermelon Seed Powder, A Practical Source Of Urease Enzyme, Anthony Quan Quoc Mai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Urease enzyme was crystallized almost a century ago, and to this day its intrinsic stability is not ideal for everyday applications. This work introduces a new process by which a naturally encapsulated material, watermelon seed powder (WMSP), is characterized for its stability and activity. WMSP enzymatic activity has been measured for over a year at various storage conditions—exposed to ambient atmosphere for a year, WMSP retained above 90% activity. In aqueous conditions, the enzyme maintained above 60% activity after two months; with the addition of a preservative that number stays at about 90%. There is a pH shift of the …

A Feedback-Based Pneumatic Compression System For Effective Lymphedema Management, Mohammad Imrul Kayes Feb 2021

A Feedback-Based Pneumatic Compression System For Effective Lymphedema Management, Mohammad Imrul Kayes

LSU Master's Theses

Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is a method of detecting lymphedema- a debilitating medical condition involving swelling of the extremities. Pneumatic compression devices are frequently used in the compression treatment of lymphedema. Although existing compression technology provides relief of symptoms, it has limitations in terms of ease-of-use, portability, and monitoring of treatment progress. Currently, there are no BIA analyzers in the market that run on a low-power microcontroller and a rechargeable battery. Moreover, no such device currently exists that integrate the BIA analysis with pneumatic compression system to offer a feedback-based solution for lymphedema treatment. This work represents the first steps towards …

Application Of Compound-Specific Stable Isotopes And Molecular Biomarkers To Paleoclimatic And Paleoecological Reconstructions, Mingqiu Hou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Compound-specific stable isotope analysis and biomarker-based paleothermometry have been increasingly applied to for paleoclimate and paleoecology studies. The first project aims to reconstruct the paleoclimate in the Qaidam Basin during the last glacial period. Qaidam Basin in the Northern Tibetan Plateau is a critical eolian factory located at a unique geographic location that links the Westerlies and the Asian summer monsoons. However, how the interactions of two climatic systems influence the paleohydrology that in turn impacts the eolian production in the Qaidam Basin has been seldom explored. Our compound-specific hydrogen isotope and UK 37 temperature data found that the …

Investigation Of The Structure And Dynamics Of Novel Battery Electrolytes By Utilizing Multidimensional Infrared Spectroscopic Techniques, Susith Rajitha Abeythunga Galle Kankanamge

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Novel battery technologies are being developed due to the high global demand for energy in many fields where different specifications are required. The battery electrolyte provides a medium for ions to diffuse between electrodes and its composition determines the compatibility with the electrode pair. While many works focus on characterizing novel electrolyte systems to advance new batteries, the understanding of the microscopic structure and dynamics of speciations present in these electrolytes is limited. Many experiment methods have obtained incomplete time-averaged structure information due to lack of instrumental time resolution compared to the molecular intrinsic time sales of electrolytes that range …

Radiation-Induced Grain Growth Of Nanocrystalline Alxcocrfeni High-Entropy Alloys, Jianren Zhou, Md Imdadul Islam, Shengmin Guo, Yi Zhang, Fengyuan Lu

Faculty Publications

Grain growth of nanocrystalline AlxCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloys with varying Al contents (x = 0, 1, 2) is studied. The alloys are fabricated by high-energy ball milling and subjected to a 1 MeV Kr2+ ion irradiation bombardment at room temperature up to a dose of 5.625 displacements per atom (dpa). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations show that the crystal structure is face-centered cubic (FCC) for CoCrFeNi (Al-0) alloy and BCC + FCC for Al1CoCrFeNi (Al-1) and Al2CoCrFeNi (Al-2) alloys. In situ TEM observations show that the grain size increases with irradiation dose from 13.8 ± 3, 7.4 …

The doubly labeled water (DLW) method measures total energy expenditure (TEE) in free-living subjects. Several equations are used to convert isotopic data into TEE. Using the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) DLW database (5,756 measurements of adults and children), we show considerable variability is introduced by different equations. The estimated rCO2 is sensitive to the dilution space ratio (DSR) of the two isotopes. Based on performance in validation studies, we propose a new equation based on a new estimate of the mean DSR. The DSR is lower at low body masses (<10 >kg). Using data for 1,021 babies and infants, …

The Influence Of Geographic Variation In Vegetation Characteristics On Habitat Use And Productivity Of An Endangered Warbler, Ashley M. Long, Heather A. Mathewson, Michael L. Morrison

Faculty Publications

Understanding how geographic variation in environmental conditions influences species’ distributions and population dynamics is critical for effective management of at-risk species and can help us anticipate wildlife responses to future change. The Golden-cheeked Warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia; hereafter warbler) is an endangered migratory songbird that nests in oak-juniper woodland in Texas. From 2009 to 2013, we monitored 895 warbler territories at 90 study sites located across the warbler's breeding range to examine how geographic variation in vegetation characteristics influenced aspects of warbler habitat selection and productivity. We found range-wide variation in the tree species composition and vegetation structure of warbler habitat. …

The control of domain walls is central to nearly all magnetic technologies, particularly for information storage and spintronics. Creative attempts to increase storage density need to overcome volatility due to thermal fluctuations of nanoscopic domains and heating limitations. Topological defects, such as solitons, skyrmions, and merons, may be much less susceptible to fluctuations, owing to topological constraints, while also being controllable with low current densities. Here, we present the first evidence for soliton/soliton and soliton/antisoliton domain walls in the hexagonal chiral magnet Mn1/3NbS2 that respond asymmetrically to magnetic fields and exhibit pair-annihilation. This is important because it suggests the possibility …

Declining Bacteria, Lead, And Sulphate, And Rising Ph And Oxygen In The Lower Mississippi River, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Various air and water pollution issues in the US were confronted in the last 60 years using national policy legislation, notably the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act. I examine changes in the concentrations of bacteria, oxygen, lead, and sulphate at the terminus of the Mississippi River before and after these pollution abatement efforts. Microbial concentrations increased or were stable from 1909 to 1980 but decreased about 3 orders of magnitude after the 1970s, while the average oxygen content increased. A large decline in lead concentration occurred after the 1960s, along with a less dramatic decline in sulphate …

The acquisition of reliable and accurate data to assess environmental changes over large spatial scales is one of the main limitations to determine the impact of eutrophication, and the effectiveness of management strategies in coastal systems. Here, we used a continuous in situ Chl-a fluorometry sensor and L8/OLI satellite data to develop an algorithm and map Chl-a spatial distribution to assess the impact of freshwater diversions and associated high nutrient loading rates in the Barataria Basin (BB) complex, a coastal system in the northern Gulf of Mexico. We collected water quality samples at 24 sampling stations and high-frequency continuous fluorometry …

Determining the dynamics of surface hydrological connectivity in a landscape of multiple lakes with different sizes and depths is challenging. This is especially the case for ungagged, large areas of multi-lake systems. Integrated use of remote sensing and geostatistical analysis can be a useful approach for developing metrics that can be used to identify the hydrological connectivity and their changes. In this study, we conducted a geostatistical analysis of 18 wet and dry binary state rasters derived from Landsat images over a large ungauged multi-lake system, the Momoge National Nature Reserve in Northeast China. Our goal was to investigate applicability …

Estimation of fluid saturation is an important step in dynamic reservoir characterization. Machine learning techniques have been increasingly used in recent years for reservoir saturation prediction workflows. However, most of these studies require input parameters derived from cores, petrophysical logs, or seismic data, which may not always be readily available. Additionally, very few studies incorporate the production data, which is an important reflection of the dynamic reservoir properties and also typically the most frequently and reliably measured quantity throughout the life of a field. In this research, the random forest ensemble machine learning algorithm is implemented that uses the field-wide …
