Three-Dimensional Analysis Of The Effect Of Human Movement On Indoor Airflow Patterns, Arup Bhattacharya, Jovan Pantelic, Ali Ghahramani, Ehsan S. Mousavi

Faculty Publications

Human activity is known to leave significant effects on indoor airflow patterns. These patterns are carefully designed for many facilities such as cleanrooms, pharmaceutical settings, and healthcare environments, where human-induced wakes contribute to the transport of contaminants. Therefore, the knowledge about these wakes as it relates to indoor air quality is critical. As a result, a series of experiments were conducted in a controlled chamber to study the three-dimensional effects of true human walking on airflow. Experiments were designed to capture the effect of human walking under three different flow conditions, and for two different walking schemes. The results show …

© 2021 The Authors Leaf-level gas exchange data support the mechanistic understanding of plant fluxes of carbon and water. These fluxes inform our understanding of ecosystem function, are an important constraint on parameterization of terrestrial biosphere models, are necessary to understand the response of plants to global environmental change, and are integral to efforts to improve crop production. Collection of these data using gas analyzers can be both technically challenging and time consuming, and individual studies generally focus on a small range of species, restricted time periods, or limited geographic regions. The high value of these data is exemplified by …

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Radiotherapy Techniques For Whole Breast Irradiation, Yibo Xie, Beibei Guo, Rui Zhang Mar 2021

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Of Radiotherapy Techniques For Whole Breast Irradiation, Yibo Xie, Beibei Guo, Rui Zhang

Faculty Publications

Background The current standard of care (SOC) for whole breast radiotherapy (WBRT) in the US is conventional tangential photon fields. Advanced WBRT techniques may provide similar tumor control and better normal tissue sparing, but it is controversial whether the medical benefits of an advanced technology are significant enough to justify its higher cost. Objective To analyze the cost-effectiveness of six advanced WBRT techniques compared with SOC. Methods We developed a Markov model to simulate health states for one cohort of women (65-year-old) with early-stage breast cancer over 15 years after WBRT. The cost effectiveness analyses of field-in-field (FIF), hybrid intensity …

Microlensing is a powerful tool for discovering cold exoplanets, and the Roman Space Telescope microlensing survey will discover over 1000 such planets. Rapid, automated classification of Roman’s microlensing events can be used to prioritize follow-up observations of the most interesting events. Machine learning is now often used for classification problems in astronomy, but the success of such algorithms can rely on the definition of appropriate features that capture essential elements of the observations that can map to parameters of interest. In this paper, we introduce tools that we have developed to capture features in simulated Roman light curves of different …

Spatial modes of light constitute valuable resources for a variety of quantum technologies ranging from quantum communication and quantum imaging to remote sensing. Nevertheless, their vulnerabilities to phase distortions, induced by random media, impose significant limitations on the realistic implementation of numerous quantum-photonic technologies. Unfortunately, this problem is exacerbated at the single-photon level. Over the last two decades, this challenging problem has been tackled through conventional schemes that utilize optical nonlinearities, quantum correlations, and adaptive optics. In this article, the self-learning and self-evolving features of artificial neural networks are exploited to correct the complex spatial profile of distorted Laguerre–Gaussian modes …

Accelerated Controller Tuning For Wind Turbines Under Multiple Hazards, Aly Mousaad Aly, Milad Rezaee Mar 2021

Accelerated Controller Tuning For Wind Turbines Under Multiple Hazards, Aly Mousaad Aly, Milad Rezaee

Faculty Publications

During their lifecycle, wind turbines can be subjected to multiple hazard loads, such as high-intensity wind, earthquake, wave, and mechanical unbalance. Excessive vibrations, due to these loads, can have detrimental effects on energy production, structural lifecycle, and the initial cost of wind turbines. Vibration control by various means, such as passive, active, and semi-active control systems provide crucial solutions to these issues. We developed a novel control theory that enables semi-active controller tuning under the complex structural behavior and inherent system nonlinearity. The proposed theory enables the evaluation of semi-active controllers’ performance of multi-degrees-of-freedom systems, without the need for time-consuming …

The Effect Of Mycorrhizal Seed Treatments On Rice Growth, Yield, And Tolerance To Insect Herbivores, Lina Bernaola, Michael J. Stout

Faculty Publications

Associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can increase or decrease plant resistance to herbivory in different crop systems, but the effects of AM fungi on plant tolerance to pests remain largely unknown. We investigated whether inoculation of rice (Oryza sativa) with AM fungi stimulates plant growth, yield, and/or tolerance to rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus) injury. Rice plants were exposed to natural infestations of herbivores during early and mid-to-late season over four field experiments. The experiments followed a 2 × 2 factorial design consisting of two AM fungi seed treatments (inoculated or non-inoculated with AM fungi) and two insecticide seed …

Effect Of Rice Planting Date And Optimal Planting Window For Southwest Louisiana, Tommaso Cerioli, Thanos Gentimis, Steven D. Linscombe, Adam N. Famoso

Faculty Publications

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) yield and grain quality are highly influenced by the planting date; thus, it is crucial to determine the optimal planting window for an area of cultivation. In this study, date of planting experiments conducted at the Louisiana State University (LSU) AgCenter Rice Research Station from 2011 to 2018 were analyzed to quantify the effect of planting date, genotype, and year on key agronomic traits. Planting date was strongly associated with yield across every year, explaining 55.6% of the overall phenotypic variation. A clear relationship was observed between later plantings and reduced yields; and the highest yields …

We present modelling of the long-term optical light and radial velocity curves of the binary stellar system CXOGBS J175553.2-281633, first detected in X-rays in the Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey. We analysed 7 yr of optical I-band photometry from Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment and found long-term variations from year to year. These long-term variations can most likely be explained with by either variations in the luminosity of the accretion disc or a spotted secondary star. The phased light curve has a sinusoidal shape, which we interpret as being due to ellipsoidal modulations. We improve the orbital period to be P = …

Finite Element Approximation Of Nonlocal Dynamic Fracture Models, P. K. Jha, R. Lipton Mar 2021

Finite Element Approximation Of Nonlocal Dynamic Fracture Models, P. K. Jha, R. Lipton

Faculty Publications

In this work we estimate the convergence rate for time stepping schemes applied to nonlocal dynamic fracture modeling. Here we use the nonlocal formulation given by the bond based peridynamic equation of motion. We begin by establishing the existence of H2 peridynamic solutions over any finite time interval. For this model the gradients can become large and steep slopes appear and localize when the non-locality of the model tends to zero. In this treatment spatial approximation by finite elements are used. We consider the central-difference scheme for time discretization and linear finite elements for discretization in the spatial variable. The …

Rigid Connections On P1 Via The Bruhat–Tits Building, Masoud Kamgarpour, Daniel S. Sage Mar 2021

Rigid Connections On P1 Via The Bruhat–Tits Building, Masoud Kamgarpour, Daniel S. Sage

Faculty Publications

We apply the theory of fundamental strata of Bremer and Sage to find cohomologically rigid (Formula presented.) -connections on the projective line, generalising the work of Frenkel and Gross. In this theory, one studies the leading term of a formal connection with respect to the Moy–Prasad filtration associated to a point in the Bruhat–Tits building. If the leading term is regular semisimple with centraliser a (not necessarily split) maximal torus (Formula presented.), then we have an (Formula presented.) -toral connection. In this language, the irregular singularity of the Frenkel–Gross connection gives rise to the homogeneous toral connection of minimal slope …

Transformation Of A Nucleon-Nucleon Potential Operator Into Its Su(3) Tensor Form Using Gpus, Tomáš Oberhuber, Tomáš Dytrych, Kristina D. Launey, Daniel Langr, Jerry P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

Starting from the matrix elements of a nucleon-nucleon potential operator provided in a basis of spherical harmonic oscillator functions, we present an algorithm for expressing a given potential operator in terms of irreducible tensors of the SU(3) and SU(2) groups. Further, we introduce a GPU-based implementation of the latter and investigate its performance compared with a CPU-based version of the same. We find that the CUDA implementation delivers speedups of 2.27x - 5.93x.

Long‐Term Monitoring Reveals Differential Responses Mussel And Host Fish Communities In A Biodiversity Hotspot, Irene Sanchez Gonzalez, Garrett W. Hopper, Jamie Bucholz, Carla L. Atkinson

Faculty Publications

Biodiversity hotspots can serve as protected areas that aid in species conservation. Long-term monitoring of multiple taxonomic groups within biodiversity hotspots can offer insight into factors influencing their dynamics. Mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) and fish are highly diverse and imperiled groups of organisms with contrasting life histories that should influence their response to ecological factors associated with local and global change. Here we use historical and contempo-rary fish and mussel survey data to assess fish and mussel community changes over a 33 year period (1986–2019) and relationships between mussel abundance and their host fish abundance in Bogue Chitto Creek, a tributary …

Clinically significant weight loss is associated with health benefits for overweight and obese adults. Participation in adequate amounts of physical activity is critical for weight maintenance. However, the recommended amount of physical activity needed to promote weight maintenance is based primarily on retrospective studies that quantified physical activity levels through questionnaires which tend to overestimate physical activity levels. In addition, the present literature has provided little data on the impact of these physical activity levels on cardiovascular and diabetes risk factors, which may have equal or more clinical importance than weight changes. The Prescribed Exercise to Reduce Recidivism After Weight …

Religious nonaffiliates who have high certainty in the existence of God or a higher power (theistic nones) have grown rapidly in size in the U.S. in the last 30 years, and are now the fourth largest American religious or secular category. This subgroup has been overlooked in prior research on religion, secularism, and health. We build on recent work on religion and health by distinguishing between atheists, agnostics, and nonaffliliated theists when examining the link between religious or secular identification and self-rated health. Specifically, we advance research on the heterogeneity of secular individuals and health by splitting nonaffiliated theists into …

Background: Bariatric surgery improves cardiovascular health, which might be partly ascribed to beneficial alterations in the autonomic nervous system. However, it is currently unknown whether benefits from surgery on cardiac autonomic regulation in post-bariatric patients can be further improved by adjuvant therapies, namely exercise. We investigated the effects of a 6-month exercise training program on cardiac autonomic responses in women undergoing bariatric surgery. Methods: Sixty-two women eligible for bariatric surgery were randomly allocated to either standard of care (control) or an exercise training intervention. At baseline (PRE) and 3 (POST3) and 9 (POST9) months after surgery, we assessed chronotropic response …

Globally, farming systems are mostly dominated by monoculture, which has the advantage of profitability at the expense of ecological systems. Recent years have witnessed an increasing mo-mentum in global efforts to deploy sustainable agriculture practices that mimic ecological processes, with agroecology at the forefront. In addition to the ecological aspect, agroecology also encompasses economic and social aspects targeting the whole food system. Transformative agroecology has been recognized as a stepping stone to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), due to its great potential to build climate change-resilient farming systems while enhancing ecosystem services and reducing biodiversity loss. Nonetheless, the available …

This paper contributes to the debate on the impact of juvenile crime punishment on high school completion and adult recidivism using administrative data from a southern U.S. state. We exploit random assignment of cases to judges and use idiosyncratic judge stringency in imprisonment to estimate the causal effect of incarceration. We find that juvenile incarceration increases the propensity of being convicted for a drug offense in adulthood while it lowers the propensity to be convicted of a property crime. Juvenile incarceration has also a detrimental effect on high school completion for earlier cohorts, but it has no impact on later …

Ceria has been shown to catalyze the dephosphorylation of phosphate monoesters at ambient temperature. As a step toward understanding the reaction mechanism on ceria, first-principles density functional theory calculations in the GGA-PW91+U approach have been carried out to study the adsorption of phosphoric acid and two model phosphate monoesters, methyl phosphate and para-nitrophenyl phosphate, on CeO2(111). Consistent patterns are found in terms of energetic, structural, electronic, and vibrational properties upon adsorption. For the parent molecules, bonding of the phosphorous atom directly to a surface lattice oxygen atom (Olatt) is the only stable molecular adsorption state. Common entities that reduce Ce4+ …

Rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have shown great potential for grids-level energy storage system. However, the lack of desirable and stable cathode materials remains challenging. Herein, Sn1.5V2O7(OH)2•3.3H2O, in which pyrovanadate V2O74− group pillared with Sn oxide layer, is developed as an advanced cathode for ZIBs and a hidden reaction mechanism in SnVO cathode through in-situ Raman and ex-situ XANEs, involves the opening of V˭O edge bonding and formation of Sn–O–V bonding, which leads to charge screening effect and facilitates the fast diffusion kinetics for zinc ions, as quantitatively verified by kinetic analysis. Additionally, the tetravalent Sn ions bring about stronger ionic …
