Spectacle Of Grief: Public Funerals And Memory In The Civil War Era, Meg Groeling
Spectacle Of Grief: Public Funerals And Memory In The Civil War Era, Meg Groeling
Civil War Book Review
Sarah J. Purcell shows how public funerals and grieving of prominent figures of the Civil War era reflected nineteenth-century Americans' attitudes toward their nation, its future, and its tumultuous past.

Two books with two different audiences, Mark Edmundson's Songs of Ourselves: Walt Whitman and the Fight for Democracy and Kenneth M. Price's Whitman in Washington: Becoming the National Poet in the Federal City look at Whitman's poetry in relationship to democracy in the nineteenth century.
The Vibrancy Of Civil War Era Studies, Jeffery Hardin Hobson
The Vibrancy Of Civil War Era Studies, Jeffery Hardin Hobson
Civil War Book Review
The feature essays and books reviewed in this issue cover a range of topics: engagement with unpublished historical documents; the relationship between humans and animals and contagions in the Civil War era; war finance; Native American policies; crony capitalism and “immunocapitalism”; free people of color and their antiracist activism in regional, national, and transnational contexts; nationalism(s) and religion; devotees to democracy; public mourning; and stubbornly committed educators. In short, this issue, like so many previous ones, reflects the vibrancy and dynamism of Civil War-era studies.
Rebels In The Making: The Secession Crisis And The Birth Of The Confederacy, Daniel W. Crofts
Rebels In The Making: The Secession Crisis And The Birth Of The Confederacy, Daniel W. Crofts
Civil War Book Review
In Rebels in the Making: The Secession Crisis and the Birth of the Confederacy, William L. Barney reveals that southern separatists, namely young Breckinridge-aligned planters, succeeded in seceding by propagating “utopian visions” and conspiracy theories that amounted to a nineteenth-century Big Lie, writes reviewer Daniel W. Crofts. In sum, “Barney contributes to the twin causes of racial justice and historical truth,” Crofts concludes.
Love & Duty: Confederate Widows And The Emotional Politics Of Lost, Daniel Kotzin
Love & Duty: Confederate Widows And The Emotional Politics Of Lost, Daniel Kotzin
Civil War Book Review
Angela Esco Elder explores the emotions of Confederate widows in Love & Duty: Confederate Widows and the Emotional Politics of Loss. Not only does Elder reveals Confederate widows’ multifarious emotions but also how the Confederate state exploited their grief to advance the Confederate cause. Esco’s Love & Duty “adds to the growing history of emotions during the Civil War,” and will become required reading for those interested in southern women and emotionality, writes reviewer Daniel Kotzin.
The Man Who Started The Civil War: James Chesnut, Honor, And Emotion In The American South, R. Boyd Murphree
The Man Who Started The Civil War: James Chesnut, Honor, And Emotion In The American South, R. Boyd Murphree
Civil War Book Review
Anna Koivusalo examines arch-secessionist James Chesnut’s emotions in The Man Who Started the Civil War: James Chesnut, Honor, and Emotion in the American South. Reviewer R. Boyd Murphree writes that Koivusalo expands our understanding of honor, which she demonstrates was an emotion, “not just a code of conduct.” The Man Who Started the Civil War “is academic in the best sense of the word: analytic, revelatory, and innovative,” Murphree writes.
Lost Causes: Confederate Demobilization And The Making Of Veteran Identity, Tracy L. Barnett
Lost Causes: Confederate Demobilization And The Making Of Veteran Identity, Tracy L. Barnett
Civil War Book Review
Bradley R. Clampitt explores the “emotional lives” of Confederates as they transitioned from soldiers to civilians in Lost Causes: Confederate Demobilization and the Making of Veteran Identity. Reviewer Tracy L. Barnett writes that by using a large sample of sources including letters, journals, and questionnaires collected from Tennessee soldiers who fought in all the war’s theaters, Clampitt reveals “the Confederate mindset and details the on-the-ground process of southern demobilization” as the soldiers moved from the battlefront to the homefront.
James Montgomery: Abolitionist Warrior, John L.S. Daley
James Montgomery: Abolitionist Warrior, John L.S. Daley
Civil War Book Review
Former journalist Robert C. Conner's James Montgomery: Abolitionist Warrior is, as reviewer John Daley notes, only the second full-length biography of Montgomery, the “least known or written about of those inconvenient heroes” who killed proslavery forces in prewar Kansas. “Conner’s stated mission in this more broadly focused work is to help the reader understand rather than forgive,” Daley writes. He concludes that, “In this [Conner] succeeds.”

Dismal Freedom: A History Of The Maroons Of The Great Dismal Swamp, Ashley Towle Phd
Dismal Freedom: A History Of The Maroons Of The Great Dismal Swamp, Ashley Towle Phd
Civil War Book Review
In Dismal Freedom: A History of the Maroons of the Great Dismal Swamp, J. Brent Morris uncovers the lives of people who self liberated and the communities they developed in the Great Dismal Swamp. Reviewer Ashely Towle writes that among the important revelations the book provides is that the maroons’ communities were more robust and persisted longer than previously understood and their very presence undermined the institution of slavery. Morris’s book “deserves high praise” as it is a “readable and engaging account of the Dismal Swamp marrons and their contributions to ending slavery.”
We The Miners: Self-Government In The California Gold Rush, John Suval
We The Miners: Self-Government In The California Gold Rush, John Suval
Civil War Book Review
Andrea G. McDowell illuminates the informal politics California gold miners practiced in the heady days following 1849 in We the Miners: Self Government in the California Gold Rush. Without governmental institutions, the miners developed their own democratic bodies to establish rules, dispense justice, and confront monopolists who threatened their livelihoods and independence. These bodies’ use of violence, especially against racial minorities, reveal the consequences of unbound democracy, however. Reviewer John Suval writes that McDowell “does admirable work unearthing overlooked dimensions of U.S. democracy and frontier law, while enriching our understanding of a storied chapter of American history.”

When Hell Came To Sharpsburg: The Battle Of Antietam And Its Impact On The Civilians Who Called It Home, Annabelle Blevins Pifer
Civil War Book Review
Steven Cowie reveals what happened when the homefront became the battlefront in When Hell Came to Sharpsburg: The Battle of Antietam and its Impact on the Civilians Who Called it Home. Reviewer Annabelle Blevins Pifer writes that “from the beginning Cowie thrusts you into the lives of Sharpsburg residents” and demonstrates the town’s civilians had no choice but to become part of the war. The two armies interrupted their daily lives, caused damage to their property that was rarely remunerated, initiated ecological changes, and spread disease through their community. When Hell Came to Shaprsburg, Pifer writes, is “a …
The Republic Of Violence: The Tormented Rise Of Abolition In Andrew Jackson's America, Scott Gac
The Republic Of Violence: The Tormented Rise Of Abolition In Andrew Jackson's America, Scott Gac
Civil War Book Review
In The Republic of Violence: The Tormented Rise of Abolition in Andrew Jackson’s America, J. D. Dickey contends the white-supremacist violence abolitionists suffered and repelled was rooted in the Jackson administration, its policies, and the white workingmen’s politics Jackson advanced and relied upon. Reviewer Scott Gac understands Dickey’s impulse to situate Jackson at the headwaters of white supremacist violence but points out that broader anti-black agitation preceded the seventh president.

The Chicago Board Of Trade Battery In The Civil War, Christopher Rein
Civil War Book Review
In The Chicago Board of Trade Battery in the Civil War, Dennis W. Belcher not only illuminates the experiences of the battery’s men, but “also sheds new light on artillery units” which reviewer Christopher M. Reign writes is “a topic of recent interest among military historians of the war.” The book is an “essential building block” from which future researchers will “benefit,” Reign concludes.
The War After The War: A New History Of Reconstruction, Xiaxiao Li
The War After The War: A New History Of Reconstruction, Xiaxiao Li
Civil War Book Review
Historians have long focused on violence’s permeation of the postwar South. However, in The War After the War: A New History of Reconstruction, John Patrick Daly argues that the violence was so elemental to, so pervasive and organized in the postbellum South that it constituted a new war—a Southern Civil War. Reviewer Xiaoxiao Li writes that Daly’s “lively military history” reveals that White southerners waged a war of violent terror to control the former-Confederate states’ governments. Further, Daly finds resonances between the war after the war in the U.S. and the aftermath of other civil wars in world history.

The Weaker Sex In War: Gender And Nationalism In Civil War Virginia, Johnathan M. Ward
The Weaker Sex In War: Gender And Nationalism In Civil War Virginia, Johnathan M. Ward
Civil War Book Review
The Confederate state exploited Confederate soldiers’ wives’ special social status, Kristen Brill exposes in The Weaker Sex: Gender and Nationalism in Civil War Virginia. However, Brill also explains that Civil War soldiers wives leveraged their special social status to advance their own personal interests, though their own political rights were not among the interests they pursued. Reviewer J. Matthew Ward writes that Brill “artfully explains how Southern white women could transcend their traditional household roles without sacrificing those roles,” which makes The Weaker Sex a “significant contribution to the historiography of the Civil War and … to American women’s …
Diversity Of Civil War Era Studies, Jeffery Hardin Hobson
Diversity Of Civil War Era Studies, Jeffery Hardin Hobson
Civil War Book Review
Reading through the contributions to the Fall 2022 issue of the Civil War Book Review, one notices unifying themes among the diverse books our contributors evaluate. The books explore and share subjects and themes including secession, emotions, Confederate widows and wives, extra-legal violence, and formal and informal politics. Though not all reviewed books share common themes, other subjects—maroons in the Great Dismal Swamp, a regimental history, and Civil War era libations—equally enrich our understanding of the Civil War era.

Nekton Community Dynamics Within Active And Inactive Deltas In A Major River Estuary: Potential Implications For Altered Hydrology Regimes, Caleb B. Taylor, John Andrew Nyman, Megan K. La Peyre
Faculty Publications
High fisheries production within estuaries is associated with coastal upwelling, tidal mixing, and land-based runoff facing increasing impacts from climate and human activities. Active river deltas receive large riverine inflows compared to inactive river deltas, providing contrasting estuaries to compare impacts of river inflow on estuarine nekton. We quantified nekton assemblages and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) of commercially important blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 within an active and inactive delta in coastal Louisiana to explore the impacts of differing riverine inflow. Crustaceans dominated estuarine assemblages, differing only by season and not delta type, with summer and fall supporting highest …

An Open Hardware 3-D Printed Device For Measuring Tensile Properties Of Thermoplastic Filament Polymers At Cryogenic Temperatures, Yue Liu, Ju Dong, Terrence R. Tiersch, Qinglin Wu, William T. Monroe
Faculty Publications
With the emerging recognition of open scientific hardware, rapid prototyping technology such as three-dimensional (3-D) printing is becoming widely available for fields such as cryobiology, and cryopreservation, where material selection for instruments and hardware has traditionally been problematic due to extreme low temperatures. A better understanding of the mechanical properties of 3-D printing thermoplastics at cryogenic temperatures is essential to material selection, part design, and printing optimization. The goal of the present study was to explore the feasibility of development for a 3-D printed device (‘CryoTensileDevice’) to hold a test specimen in liquid nitrogen and be mounted in standard mechanical …

Racial Discrimination And Hazardous Drinking Among Black Drinkers: The Role Of Social Anxiety In The Minority Stress Model, Julia D. Buckner, Nina I. Glover, Justin M. Shepherd, Michael J. Zvolensky
Faculty Publications
Objective: Black Americans who consume alcohol experience worse alcohol-related outcomes. Thus, identifying psycho-sociocultural factors that play a role in hazardous drinking among Black individuals is vital to informing prevention and treatment efforts to reduce these disparities. Racial discrimination is related to hazardous drinking among Black adults, suggesting that some may drink (and continue to drink despite drinking-related problems) to alleviate negative affect (e.g., depression, anxiety) associated with discrimination. Yet, despite the social nature of both racial discrimination and drinking, no known research has examined the role of social anxiety in the relations among racial discrimination experiences and hazardous drinking. Method: …

Estrogen receptor–α (ERα) expressed by neurons in the ventrolateral subdivision of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (ERαvlVMH) regulates body weight in females, but the downstream neural circuits mediating this biology remain largely unknown. Here we identified a neural circuit mediating the metabolic effects of ERαvlVMH neurons. We found that selective activation of ERαvlVMH neurons stimulated brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis, physical activity, and core temperature and that ERαvlVMH neurons provide monosynaptic glutamatergic inputs to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). Notably, the ERαvlVMH → DRN circuit responds to changes in ambient temperature and nutritional states. We further showed …

Effects Of A Short-Term Cold Exposure On Circulating Micrornas And Metabolic Parameters In Healthy Adult Subjects, Marc Thibonnier, Sujoy Ghosh, Anne Blanchard
Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications
This discovery study investigated in healthy subjects whether a short-term cold exposure may alter circulating microRNAs and metabolic parameters and if co-expression networks between these factors could be identified. This open randomized crossover (cold vs no cold exposure) study with blind end- point evaluation was conducted at 1 center with 10 healthy adult male volunteers. Wearing a cooling vest perfused at 14°C for 2 h reduced the local skin temperature without triggering shivering, increased norepinephrine and blood pressure while decreasing copeptin, C-peptide and heart rate. Circulating microRNAs measured before and after wearing the cooling vest twice (4 time points) identified …

Tropical leaf phenology—particularly its variability at the tree-crown scale—dominates the seasonality of carbon and water fluxes. However, given enormous species diversity, accurate means of monitoring leaf phenology in tropical forests is still lacking. Time series of the Green Chromatic Coordinate (GCC) metric derived from tower-based red–greenblue (RGB) phenocams have been widely used to monitor leaf phenology in temperate forests, but its application in the tropics remains problematic. To improve monitoring of tropical phenology, we explored the use of a deep learning model (i.e. superpixel-based Residual Networks 50, SP-ResNet50) to automatically differentiate leaves from non-leaves in phenocam images and to derive …

Midlife women commonly experience changes in cardiometabolic, physical, and psychosocial health because of menopause. Importantly, these health changes can negatively affect the overall quality of life. Specifically, women experience changes in metabolism and weight gain (particularly abdominal fat), bothersome vasomotor symptoms (i.e., hot flashes and night sweats), sleep disturbances, mood swings, and reduced bone health. Women may also experience social isolation, loneliness, and changes in gastrointestinal health, which can further reduce their quality of life. In this chapter, we summarize these important health changes and discuss various dietary and lifestyle considerations that healthcare professionals can employ to help their patients …
