As undergraduate students cultivate their scientific knowledge and abilities, several high-impact educational practices such as undergraduate research and global experiences have proven exponentially beneficial for their development and success. Current literature on underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities has focused primarily on the impact of undergraduate research on this subpopulation. However, fewer studies have explored the impact of global research experiences and women of color in international research experiences. Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Social Cognitive Career Theory, Intersectionality, and Community Cultural Wealth, this present study explored the impact of international undergraduate research experiences on women of color from groups …

Identifying the composition of avian diets is a critical step in characterizing the roles of birds within ecosystems. However, because birds are a diverse taxonomic group with equally diverse dietary habits, gaining an accurate and thorough understanding of avian diet can be difficult. In addition to overcoming the inherent difficulties of studying birds, the field is advancing rapidly, and researchers are challenged with a myriad of methods to study avian diet, a task that has only become more difficult with the introduction of laboratory techniques to dietary studies. Because methodology drives inference, it is important that researchers are aware of …

Instructional Design Framework For Construction Materials Training, Hazem Jadallah, Carol J. Friedland, Isabelina Nahmens, Charles Pecquet, Charles Berryman, Yimin Zhu Jan 2022

Instructional Design Framework For Construction Materials Training, Hazem Jadallah, Carol J. Friedland, Isabelina Nahmens, Charles Pecquet, Charles Berryman, Yimin Zhu

Faculty Publications

The construction industry is suffering, in part, from a lack of training programs offered to the construction workforce. Unfortunately, most construction training and education research focuses on university student education. Integrating education science theory into construction workforce training has the potential to improve industry training but there is a dearth of studies that present details of this integration process. To address this gap, a training framework was developed to educate material stakeholders on material properties, selection, and installation. This framework is based on andragogical and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. An assessment method evaluates training agendas to improve upon …

Women Of Power: Mapping The Spiritual Journeys Of Caribbean Women Across Regional Fiction As Portrayed In The Book Of Night Women, Texaco, And Erzulie's Skirt, Natalie Sandy D'Auvergne-Lamotte Jan 2022

Women Of Power: Mapping The Spiritual Journeys Of Caribbean Women Across Regional Fiction As Portrayed In The Book Of Night Women, Texaco, And Erzulie's Skirt, Natalie Sandy D'Auvergne-Lamotte

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Contemporary Caribbean fiction serves as an active agent for refining and expanding definitions of Caribbeanness. This study aims at demonstrating how Caribbean writers use representations of Caribbean women to contribute to an opaquer regional vision that argues against homogenizing ideas of Caribbeanness. The Book of Night Women, Texaco, and Erzulie’s Skirt, respectively written by Marlon James (Jamaica), Patrick Chamoiseau (Martinique), and Anna-Maurine Lara (Dominican Republic), work by making space for more historically accurate and locally representative images of Caribbeanness through the Caribbean women they portray. Though characters live on different islands (at different times), they still manage to represent …

Distributed Matrix Tiling Using A Hypergraph Labeling Formulation, Avah Banerjee, Maxwell Reeser, Guoli Ding Jan 2022

Distributed Matrix Tiling Using A Hypergraph Labeling Formulation, Avah Banerjee, Maxwell Reeser, Guoli Ding

Faculty Publications

Partitioning large matrices is an important problem in distributed linear algebra computing, used in ML among others. Briefly, our goal is to perform a sequence of matrix algebra operations in a distributed manner on these large matrices. However, not all partitioning schemes work well with different matrix algebra operations and their implementations (algorithms). This is a type of data tiling problem. In this paper we consider a data tiling problem using hypergraphs. We prove some hardness results and give a theoretical characterization of its complexity on random instances. Additionally we develop a greedy algorithm and experimentally show its efficacy.

Brazilian Mangroves: Blue Carbon Hotspots Of National And Global Relevance To Natural Climate Solutions, Andre S. Rovai, Robert R. Twilley, Thomas A. Worthington, Pablo Riul Jan 2022

Brazilian Mangroves: Blue Carbon Hotspots Of National And Global Relevance To Natural Climate Solutions, Andre S. Rovai, Robert R. Twilley, Thomas A. Worthington, Pablo Riul

Faculty Publications

Mangroves are known for large carbon stocks and high sequestration rates in biomass and soils, making these intertidal wetlands a cost-effective strategy for some nations to compensate for a portion of their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. However, few countries have the national-level inventories required to support the inclusion of mangroves into national carbon credit markets. This is the case for Brazil, home of the second largest mangrove area in the world but lacking an integrated mangrove carbon inventory that captures the diversity of coastline types and climatic zones in which mangroves are present. Here we reviewed published datasets to derive …

Biological And Geochemical Proxies In Sediment Cores Reveal Shifts In Marine Predator Population Dynamics Relative To Historic Anthropogenic Exploitation And Recent Climate Change At South Georgia Island Sub-Antarctic, Allyson K. Kristan, Kanchan Maiti, Kelton W. Mcmahon, Michael A. Dance, Michael J. Polito

Faculty Publications

Historical climate change and human exploitation are thought to have played important roles in shaping population dynamics of sub-Antarctic marine predators, such as king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) and Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazelle). For example, Antarctic fur seals on the sub-Antarctic South Georgia Island were nearly hunted to extinction by humans before the early 1900s. However, records of occupation history pre- and post-anthropogenic stress are often sporadic and challenging to interpret. In this study, we investigated paleoecological proxies in sediment cores from South Georgia Island to examine past marine predator population dynamics in the face of climate change and exploitation …

Estimating Water Transport From Short-Term Vessel-Based And Long-Term Bottom-Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Measurements In An Arctic Lagoon Connected To The Beaufort Sea, Chunyan Li, Kevin Mershon Boswell Jan 2022

Estimating Water Transport From Short-Term Vessel-Based And Long-Term Bottom-Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Measurements In An Arctic Lagoon Connected To The Beaufort Sea, Chunyan Li, Kevin Mershon Boswell

Faculty Publications

Acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) are quasi-remote sensing instruments widely used in oceanography to measure velocity profiles continuously. One of the applications is the quantification of land–ocean exchange, which plays a key role in the global cycling of water, heat, and materials. This exchange mostly occurs through estuaries, lagoons, and bays. Studies on the subject thus require that observations of total volume or mass transport can be achieved. Alternatively, numerical modeling is needed for the computation of transport, which, however, also requires that the model is validated properly. Since flows across an estuary, lagoon, or bay are usually non-uniform and …

Isocaloric Low Protein Diet In A Mouse Model For Vanishing White Matter Does Not Impact Isr Deregulation In Brain, But Reveals Isr Deregulation In Liver, Lisanne E. Wisse, Denise Visser, Timo J. Ter Braak, Abdellatif Bakkali, Eduard A. Struys, Christopher D. Morrison, Marjo S. Van Der Knaap, Truus E.M. Abbink

Division of Basic Science Faculty Publications

Objective: Vanishing white matter (VWM) is a genetic brain white matter disorder caused by mutations in eIF2B. eIF2B is central in the integrated stress response (ISR), during which its activity is inhibited by various cellular stresses. VWM is a chronic progressive disease with episodes of rapid neurological deterioration provoked by stresses. VWM patients and VWM mouse models show ISR deregulation in brain, correlating with chronic disease development. ISR inhibition ameliorates the chronic disease in VWM mice. The subacute deteriorations have not been modeled yet. We hypothesized that ISR activation could worsen disease progression in mice and model the episodic neurological …

Obesity: Understanding And Achieving A Healthy Weight, George A. Bray, Catherine M. Champagne Jan 2022

Obesity: Understanding And Achieving A Healthy Weight, George A. Bray, Catherine M. Champagne

Population and Public Health Science Faculty Publications

Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, stigmatized disease process that is increasing in prevalence, affecting both adults and children. It is the result of a small positive energy imbalance from too much food or too little activity. These underlying causes are influenced by many environmental factors. The food we eat is more than “calories,” and focusing on calories alone may not be as productive as focusing on patterns of eating and the role of sugar and fat in the diet. Obesity increases the risk of many diseases and shortens life span, and weight loss provides benefits in reducing health risks and …

Obesity, Body Composition, And Sex Hormones: Implications For Cardiovascular Risk, Prachi Singh, Naima Covassin, Kara Marlatt, Kishore M. Gadde, Steven B. Heymsfield Jan 2022

Obesity, Body Composition, And Sex Hormones: Implications For Cardiovascular Risk, Prachi Singh, Naima Covassin, Kara Marlatt, Kishore M. Gadde, Steven B. Heymsfield

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be the leading cause of death in adults, highlighting the need to develop novel strategies to mitigate cardiovascular risk. The advancing obesity epidemic is now threatening the gains in CVD risk reduction brought about by contemporary pharmaceu-tical and surgical interventions. There are sex differences in the development and outcomes of CVD; premenopausal women have significantly lower CVD risk than men of the same age, but women lose this advantage as they transition to menopause, an observation suggesting potential role of sex hormones in determining CVD risk. Clear differences in obesity and regional fat distribution among …

Guesswork With Quantum Side Information, Eric P. Hanson, Vishal Katariya, Nilanjana Datta, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

What is the minimum number of guesses needed on average to guess a realization of a random variable correctly The answer to this question led to the introduction of a quantity called guesswork by Massey in 1994, which can be viewed as an alternate security criterion to entropy. In this paper, we consider the guesswork in the presence of quantum side information, and show that a general sequential guessing strategy is equivalent to performing a single quantum measurement and choosing a guessing strategy based on the outcome. We use this result to deduce entropic one-shot and asymptotic bounds on the …

Testing Effects Of Lorentz Invariance Violation In The Propagation Of Astroparticles With The Pierre Auger Observatory, P. Abreu, M. Aglietta, J. M. Albury, I. Allekotte, K. Almeida Cheminant Jan 2022

Testing Effects Of Lorentz Invariance Violation In The Propagation Of Astroparticles With The Pierre Auger Observatory, P. Abreu, M. Aglietta, J. M. Albury, I. Allekotte, K. Almeida Cheminant

Faculty Publications

Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) is often described by dispersion relations of the form E-i(2) = m(i)(2) + p(i)(2) + delta E-i,n(2+ n) with delta different based on particle type i, with energy E, momentum p and rest mass m. Kinematics and energy thresholds of interactions are modified once the LIV terms become comparable to the squared masses of the particles involved. Thus, the strongest constraints on the LIV coefficients delta(i,n) tend to come from the highest energies. At sufficiently high energies, photons produced by cosmic ray interactions as they propagate through the Universe could be subluminal and unattenuated over cosmological …

The Cacophony Of Politics: Northern Democrats And The American Civil War, Michael Todd Landis Jan 2022

The Cacophony Of Politics: Northern Democrats And The American Civil War, Michael Todd Landis

Civil War Book Review

J. Matthew Gallman delights in the chaos, offering a dizzying litany of anecdotes and personalities to give readers a sense of the opacity of partisanship in the early 1860s. “One chief goal here is to demonstrate how fundamentally messy, and often inconsistent, Civil War partisan politics really was,” he warns at the start. Buried Dreams: The Hoosac Tunnel And The Demise Of The Railroad Age, Scott Randolph Jan 2022

Buried Dreams: The Hoosac Tunnel And The Demise Of The Railroad Age, Scott Randolph

Civil War Book Review

In Buried Dreams, Andrew R. Black chronicles the largely forgotten effort of Massachusetts to surmount the Berkshires and build a permanent link with the interior in order to retain the Commonwealth’s, and particularly the port of Boston’s economic prominence. This effort, the 4.75 mile-long Hoosac Tunnel, eventually took twenty-four years, ended over one hundred lives, and consumed more than $20,000,000 in state funds. Born of a desire for boundless western bounty, it never fulfilled the lofty expectations its supporters heaped upon it. Predicted by its early enthusiasts (tunnelites) to take but a few years, and presenting few if any …

This study tests the ability of a novel approach to identifying washover beds in coastal lakes. Combined X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and cluster analysis was used to identify hurricane washover beds in sediment cores from Clam Lake on the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge in southeastern Texas. The lake is known to contain washover beds from recent hurricanes, but the washover sediment has similar microfossil, loss-on-ignition and textural characteristics to non-washover sediment and is not readily distinguishable. Sediment cores taken from marshes surrounding the lake do contain visually-recognizable sandy washover beds of Hurricanes Ike, Rita, Carla and Audrey. XRF analysis of these …
