The History Of The Llano Cooperative Colony, Henry Edward Wilson

After failing to gain political power through the ballot box, a group of California socialists, led by Job Harriman, founded the Llano Cooperative Colony in 1914. Here these Marxians hoped to reap the benefits of cooperation and eliminate the injustices of capitalism. They expanded rapidly until 1917 when there were over 1100 members and numerous industrial and agricultural activities. Then this desert community failed because of a water shortage and a new colony was started in west-central Louisiana.
In Louisiana, steady progress was made toward self-sufficiency despite hardship and privation. Several schisms shook the colony to its foundations, but George …

It was the purpose of the writer to make a study of the Acadian handicraft work and to determine its role in the settlement of Louisiana. It was the problem to secure authoritative information concerning the Acadian handicraft work as it is being done today. This required discovery of each craft’s origin, brief tracing of its development, and its value to the Acadian people. To make this craft study, the writer visited the Acadian settlement in Southwestern Louisiana, interviewed officials, watched the native Acadian craftsmen at work, inspected equipment, took photographs of the craft designs, questioned producer or owner as …

The Socialist Vote In Louisiana, 1912: An Historical Interpretation Of Radical Sources, H Grady Mcwhiney

In 1912, the Socialist candidate for President, Eugene V. Debs received 5,249 votes in Louisiana. This is the only time in the history of the state that such a large radical vote was polled. A similar phenomenon did not occur in other Southern states, and the uniqueness of the Socialist vote in Louisiana is the query of this thesis.
The Socialist Party became active in Louisiana in 1904. Two years later the more militant comrades broke with the mild radicalism of the Socialist Party and joined the Industrial Workers of the World. In 1910, with the forming of the Brotherhood …
