Timing Of Some Of The Molecular Events Required For Cell Fusion Induced By Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, K. G. Kousoulas, S. Person, T. C. Holland
Faculty Publications
The timing of some of the molecular events that are required for cell fusion was investigated. Cell fusion was produced by a mutant of herpes simplex virus type 1 that causes extensive cell fusion during infection. The timing of molecular events required for fusion was established by the use of blocking agents. Phosphonoacetic acid blocks viral DNA synthesis; actinomycin D blocks RNA synthesis; cycloheximide blocks protein synthesis; 2-deoxyglucose blocks glycosylation of glycoproteins; high temperature, NH4Cl, and adamantanone block unknown steps required for cell fusion. For cells infected at a low multiplicity of infection, phosphonoacetic acid decreased the rate but not …
Operant Methodology In The Study Of Learning, D. M. Thompson, J. M. Moerschbaecher
Operant Methodology In The Study Of Learning, D. M. Thompson, J. M. Moerschbaecher
Faculty Publications
A series of experiments is described in which operant methodology is used to study the effects of drugs on 'learning'. Emphasis is placed on the technique of repeated acquisition as a behavioral baseline for studying this type of transition state. In this technique, each subject is required to learn a new discrimination each session. Multiple-schedule procedures are also described in which acquisition is compared to a 'performance' task, where the discrimination is the same each session. The learning baseline is more sensitive to the disruptive effects of a variety of drugs (e.g., cocaine, d-amphetamine, haloperidol) than is the performance baseline. …
Acute And Chronic Effects Of Cocaine On Extinction‐Induced Aggression, Mitchell S. Moore, Donald M. Thompson
Acute And Chronic Effects Of Cocaine On Extinction‐Induced Aggression, Mitchell S. Moore, Donald M. Thompson
Faculty Publications
Pigeons worked individually in a chamber containing a response key and a mirror. Pecking on the key was controlled by a multiple schedule in which a brief period of continuous food reinforcement alternated with a 5‐minute period of extinction. Under baseline conditions, aggressive behavior (responding on the mirror) occurred at the onset of each extinction period. In Experiment I (acute drug administration), the aggressive behavior was decreased by doses of cocaine that had little or no effect on key pecking. Such food‐reinforced responding was disrupted, however, by higher doses of cocaine. An attempt to mimic the disruptive drug effects by …

Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Characterization Of Heme Disorder In Hemoproteins, G. N. La Mar, D. L. Budd, D. B. Viscio, K. M. Smith, K. C. Langry
Faculty Publications
A proton NMR method is described for determining the orientation of a porphyrin within the heme pocket of a hemoprotein. The pattern of the hyperfine-shifted heme methyl resonances in low-spin ferric model compounds is demonstrated to characteristically reflect the position of a localized low-symmetry perturbation on the π system. The specific assignments via deuteration of the two inconvertible sets of methyl resonances observed for deuteroporphyrin-reconstituted sperm whale metmyoglobin cyanide lead to the conclusion that the low-symmetry perturbations on the heme due to the apoprotein components by a 180°rotation about the α-γ meso axis. Hence the heme in the reconstituted myoglobin …

Trends In Mortality From Cerebrovascular Diseases In The United States, 1960 To 1975, Ivan Soltero, Kiang Liu, Richard Cooper, Jeremiah Stamler, Dan Garside
Faculty Publications
A long-term decline in death rates from cerebrovascular diseases in the United States accelerated in 1969, with a further increase in the rate of decline after 1972. This break in the pattern of the mortality curve for stroke was observed in all 4 major sex-color groups, and affected all age groups in which a significant number of stroke deaths occur. The decline for non-whites was relatively and absolutely greater than for the comparable white sex. If the 1960 rates had persisted in 1975, 87,600 more lives would have been lost to cerebrovascular diseases. Although there are no data documenting a …

Estimating Individual Feed Intake Of Group-Fed Steers By Modified Weighing Design, D. E. Franke, T. C. Cartwright, R. L. Ott
Estimating Individual Feed Intake Of Group-Fed Steers By Modified Weighing Design, D. E. Franke, T. C. Cartwright, R. L. Ott
Faculty Publications
An experimental design for estimation of feed intake of individual animals fed in pairs or groups is discussed. Procedures are given to compute 95% confidence intervals of estimates. The accuracy a researcher needs for experimentation will suggest whether he can successfully utilize this procedure for estimation of feed intake of individual animals. Disadvantages of the design appear to be related to numbers of replicates required when large numbers of animals are involved. © 1978, American Dairy Science Association. All rights reserved.

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was conducted to compare the number and types of cases handled by the Family Court System during the period of June 1, 1975 through December 31, 1976. The case records of a random sample of this population was used. The variables used in this study were: age, race, sex, types of crimes committed, income, marital status of parents, whether the parents are buying or renting their homes, court time consumed in processing these cases, and school offender last attended to determine the area with the highest percentage of crime rate. A profile was developed on each case record …
