For three decades, 1858-1888, A. E. Blackmar of New Orleans, Louisiana, was one of the leading music publishers in the South. During the Civil War he published more titles than any other Confederate music publisher, operating both from New Orleans and also from Augusta, Georgia. After the war, Blackmar engaged in a number of unsuccessful partnerships but continued to publish music until his death in 1888. He also established business in New York and San Francisco for brief periods. It was primarily as a Confederate music publisher that A. E. Blackmar made his greatest contribution to American sheet music publishing. …

The Female Imagery Of Mary Beth Edelson And Ana Mendieta, Nancy Lynn Harris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two major contributors to the invention of a feminine iconography in the 1970's are Mary Beth Edelson and Ana Mendieta. Edelson's method of inventing and defining female imagery concerns psychological and historical concepts. Mendieta's use of body art is seen in the form of regeneration symbols, silhouettes, and animal symbols that relate to primitive cultures which are part of her Cuban heritage.

Estimates for α-transfer strengths based on the pseudo SU(3) model are tested. α-cluster functions are showm to have large overlaps with pseudo SU(3) representations of highest symmetry. Pseudo SU(3) estimates are compared with f 5 2P 3 2P 1 2 shell model predictions for α-transfers from Ni to Zn isotopes. © 1978.

Proposal For Restoration Of Valcour Aimé Site, St. James Parish, Louisiana, Michele Killebrew

Landscape Architecture Historical Capstone Projects

The Creole Area of Louisiana: The southern Louisiana river parishes between Baton Rouge and New Orleans—especially St. John, St. James, Iberville, and Ascension parishes—represent a culturally unique and economically the richest area of the state during the pre-Civil War period (1810–1860). Sociologically, these river parishes represent an area primarily settled by Creole gentlemen-planters. These second-generation Louisianians were the upper echelons of New Orleans society and maintained a very cosmopolitan lifestyle. More often than not, the young gentlemen were educated and traveled abroad. This cosmopolitan lifestyle was reflected in the grand homes they built. Being Creole-settled, this area's cultural and architectural …

Variability Of The Reverse-Flow Concentration Technique Of Measuring Plankton Respiration, R. Eugene Turner Mar 1978

Variability Of The Reverse-Flow Concentration Technique Of Measuring Plankton Respiration, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Results from the reverse-flow concentration method used to determine community plankton respiration vary significantly because of metabolic inactivation or losses of a portion of the concentrated sample during the filtering process. These losses seem to be nearly constant at concentrations greater than 150X. The within sample coefficient of variation is 20-40% and is primarily a result of clumping and inadequate mixing before subsampling. A rapid processing of the samples is critical for best results.
