The Vanquished Christ Of Modern Passion Drama., Lynda Margaret Scott Donaldson Jan 1984

The Vanquished Christ Of Modern Passion Drama., Lynda Margaret Scott Donaldson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The study of "The Vanquished Christ in Modern Passion Drama" selects from the anthropocentric passion imagery in over fifty modern plays written in English between 1864 and 1980. By focusing on the modern passion dramas which appeared during the 1920s and in the postmodern period coinciding with the conflict in Vietnam of 1957 through 1973, the main thrust of this research reveals the modern poetic vision of the Christ figure of passion persona who, like mankind at war, is threatened with extinction. The modern, radical poetic vision differs from the traditional view of the passion demonstrated in pageants such as …

Factors Affecting The Success/Nonsuccess Of Small Farmers In Louisiana., Adell Brown Jan 1984

Factors Affecting The Success/Nonsuccess Of Small Farmers In Louisiana., Adell Brown

Participants' responses were recorded on an 11-point continuum …

The Role Of Religions And Cults In The Plays Of Thomas Middleton., Deborah Rees Griffitts Jan 1984

The Role Of Religions And Cults In The Plays Of Thomas Middleton., Deborah Rees Griffitts

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Most of Thomas Middleton's works, as well as his personal background, indicate that his theological inclinations were Calvinistic. Many of his plays display his regard for "protestant" morality or his contempt for Roman Catholics and fringe elements of the Reform movement. His early and middle plays also satirize Puritans, who, although basically loyal subjects, were offensive to both Elizabeth I and James I because they urged greater reforms within the orthodox Church and criticized practices of which both monarchs were fond. During the reign of James, Puritans, largely from the middle class, became particularly unpopular among the gentry and courtier …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A multi-environmental trial was conducted in Rwanda, located in the highlands of Central Africa. The trial consisted of 26 cultivars of sweet potatoes repeated over 11 environments. Genotype X environment (G X E) interactions were highly significant for vine yield, fresh root yield, number of roots, and dry matter yield. Average root weight was not significant for G X E interactions. The G X E variance component was generally more important than the variance component for cultivars. From pathway analysis it was concluded that the G X E effects of dry matter yield were little determined by the G X …

A Multitrait-Multisource Examination Of The Relationship Between Moral Judgment And Religiousness Of Eighth Grade Students., Kathleen Trudeau Cranford

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Since results have been equivocal about the relationship between religion and moral judgment, this study was undertaken to determine whether there was evidence for the relationship, using a multitrait-multisource technique. Criticisms of Kohlberg's theory of moral development were reviewed in regard to the issue. Teacher, self, and peer ratings were obtained on scales of religiousness, moral judgment, and social skill, which was included as a discriminant variable. A pilot group of 67 eighth graders was assessed to determine the reliability of the rating scales. Thirty-four eighth graders in the sample completed the religiousness, moral judgment, and social skills rating scales …

Electronic Structure Of Small Iron Clusters., Keeyung Lee Jan 1984

Electronic Structure Of Small Iron Clusters., Keeyung Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The linear combination of Gaussian orbitals (LCGO) method has been adopted in developing a spin-polarized molecular orbital calculation code. The calculations are based on density functional theory using local density approximation for the exchange-correlation potential. A variational fitting method is used to obtain a charge density fit to avoid the need for using four-center integrals in evaluating the Coulomb potential. The matrix elements of the exchange potential are evaluated by direct numerical integration using a doubling grid developed for this purpose. Self-consistent solutions have been obtained using this method for Fe(,9) and Fe(,15) clusters with open boundaries and with body-centered …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Due to the potential of iron-ruthenium bimetallic heterogeneous catalysis in a number of high demand, energy related processes, this study was undertaken to synthesis and characterize a series of bimetallic Iron-Ruthenium alloy and clusters. A material science approach was taken which relies on the physical and chemical characterization of catalyst material itself rather than the classical chemical kinetics investigation of the catalytic reaction. Various methods have been employed for the determination of surface and bulk properties of catalysts during dehydration-hydration, and oxidation-reduction treatments. In the case of the bimetallic systems, the use of ('99)Ru and ('57)Fe double labelled Mossbauer experiments …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Effect Of Capital Structure Regulation On The Asset Portfolio Of Commercial Banks., Robert Edward Lamy Jan 1984

An Empirical Investigation Of The Effect Of Capital Structure Regulation On The Asset Portfolio Of Commercial Banks., Robert Edward Lamy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The recent failures of large banks coupled with unstable economic conditions have generated a renewed interest in the regulation of large commercial banks. In particular, the regulation of bank capital by federal banking authorities, which for years, has assumed the role as protector of overall banking soundness, has become a highly debated topic. This issue is by no means indigenous to recent times and the academic and professional literature is replete with studies attempting to solve the capital adequacy dilemma. Exactly how much capital is enough to ensure the soundness of the banking industry has not been agreed upon. But, …

Diagenesis Of Cenozoic Limestones On Enewetak Atoll (Dolomite, Neomorphism, Radiaxial)., Arthur Henry Saller Jan 1984

Diagenesis Of Cenozoic Limestones On Enewetak Atoll (Dolomite, Neomorphism, Radiaxial)., Arthur Henry Saller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cores from Enewetak Atoll afford an excellent opportunity to study diagenetic alteration in carbonates from the modern sediment-water interface to burial depths of over 1,300 m. Intensity of diagenetic alteration in Cenozoic carbonates on Enewetak is largely a function of time which strata have been in diagenetic environments with active water circulation. In Pleistocene strata deposited in back-reef environments, diagenesis is dominated by meteoric processes including dissolution of aragonite, calcite cementation, and alteration of aragonite and high-magnesian calcite (HMC) to low-magnesian calcite (LMC). Petrographic and stable isotope data suggest that aragonite neomorphism occurred by a process of partial delicate intrafabric …

A Time Series Model Of The Controller Functions Of The Human Temperature Regulating System., Mohsen Neghabat

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this study is to develop time series models of the controller mechanisms of the human temperature regulating system. The controller responses are: changes in metabolic heat production, changes in evaporative heat loss and alterations in the surface blood flow. After evaluating the models developed for the controller mechanisms, the models are validated in the context of a complete simulation model of temperature regulation. Additionally, upper and lower limits are set for the controller responses. Because of the nature of the data available for surface blood flow, this controller response is not represented by time series models. Published …

Experimental Investigation Of A Cylinder In Axial Motion At Low Reynolds Number., Tsukasa Jeff Ui Jan 1984

Experimental Investigation Of A Cylinder In Axial Motion At Low Reynolds Number., Tsukasa Jeff Ui

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Measurements were made on the terminal velocity of circular cylinders with length to diameter ratio 4 < L/D < 231 moving parallel to their axes at low Reynolds number in a fluid bounded by a cylindrical container. The drag was found to vary inversely with the boundary diameter as suggested by Wakiya's theory for prolate spheroids. When extrapolated to infinite boundary, the results agree well with the numerical calculations of Youngren and Acrivos, Gluckman et al. and Swanson et al. and the experimental results of Heiss and Coull.

A Regression Model To Measure The Impact Of Actual And Proposed Class Scheduling Policies On Electricity Consumption: A Case Study At Louisiana State University., Enrique Mejorada Jan 1984

A Regression Model To Measure The Impact Of Actual And Proposed Class Scheduling Policies On Electricity Consumption: A Case Study At Louisiana State University., Enrique Mejorada

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Universities have adopted many programs to conserve electricity and counteract its high costs. Electricity can be conserved by adopting a class scheduling policy which schedules a reduced number of classes when the weather is more inclement. A regression model is postulated to measure the impact of the actual class scheduling policy on the 3-hourly electricity consumption at Louisiana State University. This model explicitly considers the effects of students' load, temperature, and humidity, and implicitly considers variables such as electricity prices and implemented electricity conservation programs through dummy variables. Also, two- and three-way interaction effects are considered in this model. Since …
