Conformational Studies Of Carnitine And Acetylcarnitine: Design And Synthesis Of Active-Site Probes Of Carnitine Acetyltransferase., William Jay Colucci
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The conformations of carnitine (Cn) and acetylcarnitine (AcCn) have been investigated through a combination of methods. The solid-state structures of their zwitter-ionic forms have been determined by single-crystal X-ray analyses. The crystal structures reveal different backbone conformations for the two molecules. Carnitine exists in an extended conformation (a,g $\sp-$ conformations for the C1-C2-C3-C4 and N1-C4-C3-O3 torsion angles, respectively), while AcCn exhibits a folded conformation ($g\sp-,g\sp-$). The solution conformations of Cn and AcCn have been investigated by high resolution $\sp1$H NMR coupling data. A simple equation has been developed for the prediction of torsion angles from $\sp3 J$ (HCCH) coupling constants. …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Usefulness Of Current Cost Information In Merger Prediction., Robert Kuaterng Su
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The usefulness of current cost (CC) information, as compared to historical cost (HC) information, has been a focus of debate over the last decade. Inconsistent research findings concerning this question suggest that additional evidence is needed. Given the intensive merger activity in recent years and the significance of mergers to the economy and shareholders, this study empirically investigated the usefulness of current cost information in merger prediction. Fifty-seven firms that were merged between 1981 and 1984 were selected from the FASB databank, and an equal number of nonmerged firms were matched with the merged firms. Using the subsample for 1981-82, …

Applications Of Silicon Compounds In The Synthesis Of Insect Pheromone Analogs., Oanh Thi Vu Nguyen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Pheromones are highly active chemical messengers which are secreted by a member of an animal species and elicit a definite behavior in other members of the same species. The study of insect pheromones has recently attracted great attention because of their purely scientific interest and their favorable prospects for the control of pest insects. The study in this dissertation aims at the elucidation of some important aspects of the mechanism of perception of insect pheromones, which is based on the fact that the cyclic analogs of the natural pheromone have partially fixed conformations, whereas the straight-chain natural pheromone is more …
Repricing Made-To-Order Production Programs., Mehmet Murat Tarimcilar
Repricing Made-To-Order Production Programs., Mehmet Murat Tarimcilar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Planned procurement quantities in made-to-order production programs are often altered after production has started. Cost analysts are concerned about providing cost estimates for alternatives to ongoing programs. This research develops a new model for repricing made-to-order production programs. It is an effort to integrate a theoretically developed production phase prediction model into a comprehensive repricing model. The production model is defined by a cost function that employs the impact of two cost determinants, production rate and learning. It is supported by economic theory and is consistent with our knowledge of made-to-order production process. The theoretical model links the direct costs …
A Search For Neutrino Oscillations., Wai Ching Choi
A Search For Neutrino Oscillations., Wai Ching Choi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A search for neutrino oscillation has been carried out at LAMPF (the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility). The engineering run in the 1986 cycle has demonstrated that the detector works as designed. The probability of oscillation between two neurino types $\nu\sb1$ and $\nu\sb2$ can be parameterized by two variables: (1) the difference between the squares of the masses of two mass eigenstates $\delta$m$\sp2$ $(\equiv\ \vert$m$\sb1\sp2$ - m$\sb2\sp2\vert),$ and (2) the mixing angle $(\theta)$ between the two states. In this experiment, we set limits on the oscillations $\bar\nu\sb\mu$ $\to$ $\bar\nu\sb{\rm e}$ and $\nu\sb{\rm e}$ $\to$ $\bar\nu\sb{\rm e}$ as a function of …

Computer Simulation Of Hydrostatic Co-Extrusion Of Bimetallic Compounds., Mohammad Mohammad Abadi Dehghani
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A study of hydrostatic co-extrusion of a hard-core/soft-clad bi-metallic compound has been conducted. The research employs the Sachs' boring-out technique to determine the residual stress distribution in a hydrostatically co-extruded copper-clad Gildcop composite. A parallel simulation of the residual stress distribution in such composites extruded to extrusion ratios of 2.25, 4.0, and 7.5 was conducted using the ABAQUS finite element code. The version of the code employed uses an elastic-plastic constitutive law for material behavior and does not simulate deformation heating effects. Data for the mechanical properties were obtained experimentally by constant true strain-rate tests on material identical to that …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon-Bridged (1(N))(2,6)Pyridinophanes., Young Je Joo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Pyridine-containing heterophanes, which possess a rigid non-flexible framework, similar to that of porphyrin backbones, are ideal structures to probe the electronic and/or steric effects within a highly electron-rich cavity. The syntheses of heteromacrocycles incorporating the 2,6-pyridino moiety are described. 2-Bromo-6-lithiopyridine, generated from 2,6-dibromopyridine and n-butyllithium, was used to synthesize 2,6-bis (2$\sp\prime$-(6$\sp\prime$-bromopicolinoyl)) pyridine and bis-2-(6-bromopyridyl)ketone in 36% and 63% yield, respectively. Ketalization of these ketones was accomplished by either standard acidic or basic conditions. To model a nucleophilic substitution route for cyclization of the resulting ketals, lithioacetonitriles were allowed to react with bromopyridines to produce symmetrical and unsymmetrical cyanomethine adducts in …
Resolution Proof Technique In Linear Temporal Logic., Krzysztof Jan Kochut
Resolution Proof Technique In Linear Temporal Logic., Krzysztof Jan Kochut
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation presents a resolution proof technique for Propositional Linear Temporal Logic of discrete time with the "Until" operator. The presented proof technique stems from the resolution method developed by L. Farinas del Cerro and A. Cavalli. However, their method is incomplete, and their completeness proof, as originally reported, is incorrect. Unlike Farinas's method, our proof technique incorporated the "Until" operator, which is a very powerful and useful in describing complex temporal relationships which are common in many areas of computer science. Our technique is also proved complete. The presented resolution method for linear temporal logic is similar to classical …

Agnes Moorehead worked as a professional actress for forty-five years. She was employed in all the major entertainment fields of her time--theatre, vaudeville, radio, film, television and the recording industry. A significant reason for this almost constant employment was Moorehead's career as a public reader of literature. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, it seeks to document Moorehead's public reading career with emphasis upon her solo performances of literature and in so doing to provide an investigation of those people and events that most influenced her success as an oral reader. The second purpose is to postulate Moorehead's …
Adaptive Grid Solution Procedure For Elliptic Flows., Fadl Hassan Moukalled
Adaptive Grid Solution Procedure For Elliptic Flows., Fadl Hassan Moukalled
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This thesis deals with the formulation of a computationally efficient adaptive grid system for two-dimensional elliptic flow and heat transfer problems. The formulation is in a curvilinear coordinate system so that flow in irregular geometries can be easily handled. An equal order pressure-velocity scheme is formulated in this thesis to solve the flow equations. An adaptive grid solution procedure is developed in which the grid is automatically refined in regions of high errors and consecutive calculations are performed between the coarse grid and adapted grid regions in the same spirit as that of a Multi-Grid method. In orthogonal coordinate systems, …

Field Evaluation And Genetic Analysis Of {\It Heliothis\/} Spp. Resistance In Advanced Lanthanum Cotton Strains., Stephen James Stringer
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Seventeen advanced La cotton breeding strains having Heliothis spp. resistance attributed to morphological characters and allelochemics were evaluated for field resistance and flowerbud gossypol content at Baton Rouge, LA. in 1982 and 1983. These experimental cottons averaged less than 50% of the Heliothis spp. larvae and feeding-damaged fruit of two cotton cultivars recommended for production in Louisiana. These strains also had at least 25% less feeding-damaged fruit and 15% fewer live Heliothis spp. larvae than two Heliothis spp. resistant cotton germplasm lines. Results suggested that high flowerbud gossypol pigment glandulosity, rather than flowerbud gossypol content per se, played an important …
Experimental And Finite Element Study Of Residual Stresses In Zircaloy-4(R) And Ofhc Copper Tubes., Jahangir Rasty
Experimental And Finite Element Study Of Residual Stresses In Zircaloy-4(R) And Ofhc Copper Tubes., Jahangir Rasty
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Non-homogeneous plastic deformation associated with metal-forming operations results in a state of residual stress in the final product. Complete evaluation of the mechanical behavior of the product under operating condition requires a knowledge of these stresses. In order to evaluate the magnitude and distribution of residual stresses, existing experimental techniques are complemented by computer-aided simulation of the forming process using elastic-plastic finite element method (FEM). It is found the FEM can be effectively utilized to simulate metal-forming operations in order to determine the combination of process variables which optimizes the residual stress distribution in the final product. In the experimental …
