The Effects Of Temperature Stress On The Bovine Pituitary-Adrenal-Ovarian Axis: An In-Vitro Study., Terry Davis
The Effects Of Temperature Stress On The Bovine Pituitary-Adrenal-Ovarian Axis: An In-Vitro Study., Terry Davis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effect of temperature stress on profiles of LH and FSH from pituitary cells; aldosterone, progesterone, cortisol and corticosterone from adrenocortical cells; and estradiol and progesterone from granulosa cells were evaluated using bovine anterior pituitary, adrenocortical and granulosa cells in primary cultures. Cells were grown to confluency in a 37$\sp\circ$C humidified incubator containing 95% O$\sb2$ and 5% CO$\sb2$. Upon reaching confluency, half of the wells were assigned to 40$\sp\circ$C incubation temperature while the other half remained at 37$\sp\circ$C. The 37$\sp\circ$C temperature represented control conditions whereas 40$\sp\circ$C represented heat stress. Various biological substances, that have been reported to alter hormone production, …
Setting Events And Parent-Child Interactions: An Assessment Study., Laura Busch Carper
Setting Events And Parent-Child Interactions: An Assessment Study., Laura Busch Carper
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Recently, the influence of setting events upon parent-child interactions has emerged as a focus of study. While the effects of these setting events on family relationships have been discussed, few researchers have attempted to evaluate systematically the influence of a variety of setting events on parent-child interactions. The purpose of this study was to examine a number of potential setting events, and to determine whether these setting events covary with day to day parent-child interactions. Subjects were 7 mother-child dyads seeking psychological services due to the child's oppositional behavior. This study investigated the relationship between setting events (as measured by …
Classical And Statistical Thermodynamics Of Solid-Liquid Equilibria., John Edward Coon
Classical And Statistical Thermodynamics Of Solid-Liquid Equilibria., John Edward Coon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The research discussed in this dissertation has been divided into two parts. The first portion deals with the classical thermodynamics of compounds that are typically used as model compounds for coal liquids. The bulk of the work has been an experimental study of the solid-liquid solubilities (SLE) for a large number of these compounds in various solvents and a smaller study of the vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) of some of these systems. The second method is the traditional experimental method for obtaining the activity coefficients which represent the liquid phase nonidealities in a system. The first method is an alternative method …
Extending A Theoretical Model: Nursing Career Departure., Barbara Heil Foss
Extending A Theoretical Model: Nursing Career Departure., Barbara Heil Foss
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The intention of this dissertation was to evaluate empirically the generalization of a theoretical model. The model (Tinto, 1987) studied was intended to predict departure from college. In this study the model was extended to departure from career. The basic premise of Tinto's theory is that voluntary departure from the college community is the result of a decreased integration between an individual and the institution. Concepts of the Tinto model were used to develop the career persistence model, which depicts how the preoccupational attributes of academic achievement and educational attainment are a function of precollege goal commitment. These variables plus …
An Analysis Of Industrial And Occupational Stratification In Rural Labor Market Areas., Ann Ziebarth Dellenbarger
An Analysis Of Industrial And Occupational Stratification In Rural Labor Market Areas., Ann Ziebarth Dellenbarger
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The geographic area where workers reside and work defines the labor market area. The opportunities available in labor market areas vary considerably. For workers, these differences represent opportunity boundaries. The employment profile of rural labor market areas and the resulting impact on workers' earnings are the foci of this research. Three research phases are reported. First, a descriptive analysis of labor market area differences is provided. Second, factors contributing to earnings differences are discussed. Third, results of exploratory analysis for farm couples' off-farm earnings are reported. The data used in analysis is the U.S. Census PUMS-D individual level data which …
The Congruence Extension Property For Algebraic Semigroups., Josefa I. Garcia
The Congruence Extension Property For Algebraic Semigroups., Josefa I. Garcia
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A semigroup has the congruence extension property (CEP) provided that each congruence on each subsemigroup can be extended to the semigroup. This property, along with the ideal extension property (IEP) and the group congruence extension property (GCEP) are studied in this work. Whether each of these properties is productive, hereditary or preserved by homomorphisms is determined (except for the homomorphic property for CEP). Conditions under which the homomorphic image of a semigroup with CEP has CEP are established. Disruptive element and disruptive pair theory is developed and shown to be an important concept in the study of CEP and IEP. …
Social Organization, Reproductive Behavior, And Zoogeography Of Some Indo-Pacific Hawkfishes (Cirrhitidae)., Terry John Donaldson
Social Organization, Reproductive Behavior, And Zoogeography Of Some Indo-Pacific Hawkfishes (Cirrhitidae)., Terry John Donaldson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The social organization and reproductive behavior of ten species of hawkfishes was studied at several Pacific localities. In addition, the zoogeography of all Indo-West Pacific cirrhitids was considered in relation to both the Indo-Malayan triangle as a center of species diversity and the isolation of the Pacific and Indian ocean basins during Quaternary events. Patterns of hawkfish distribution and species richness, reflected in high levels of endemism in both the Pacific and Indian ocean basins, support the hypothesis that the Indo-Malayan triangle is not so much a center of speciation as one of the confluence of two distinct centers of …
A Behavior Analytic Model For Nonorganic Failure To Thrive: Observations Of Parent And Child Behavior During Feeding Interactions., Robert Warren Heffer Jr
A Behavior Analytic Model For Nonorganic Failure To Thrive: Observations Of Parent And Child Behavior During Feeding Interactions., Robert Warren Heffer Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was the first to apply a behavior analytic model of assessment to failure to thrive (FTT) by observing parent and child behavior during mealtimes at hospitalization for provisional diagnosis of FTT. Descriptive data (e.g., child growth parameters, temperament, and developmental status; maternal medical history and psychopathology; and demographic information) also were collected. The specific goal, however, was to identify feeding behaviors that differed in rate of occurrence in parent-child dyads in which the child was classified: (a) nonorganic failure to thrive (NOFTT) or Mixed FTT (e.g., physical and psychosocial etiology), (b) organic failure to thrive (OFTT), or (c) …
Behavioral Correlates Of Children's Social Competence: An Investigation Of Two Social Skills Classification Models., Carol Elizabeth Frentz
Behavioral Correlates Of Children's Social Competence: An Investigation Of Two Social Skills Classification Models., Carol Elizabeth Frentz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the study was to investigate behavioral correlates of children's social competence as classified by two different models, one focused on sociometric status, and the other based on more specific social skill deficits. A total sample of 971 junior high school students, either regular education or mainstreamed handicapped, were included in the study. Based on a peer nomination inventory, children classified as popular, controversial, neglected, and rejected, were compared within three different behavioral domains, social skills, academic achievement, and behavior problems. Major findings included the following: (a) popular children obtained relatively higher scores on social skills, followed by …
Dna Methylation, Chromatin Structure And Expression Of Maize Ribosomal Rna Genes., Eldon Ralph Jupe
Dna Methylation, Chromatin Structure And Expression Of Maize Ribosomal Rna Genes., Eldon Ralph Jupe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The restriction endonuclease HpaII was utilized to examine ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) methylation in maize and teosinte leaf DNA. Much of the rDNA was inaccessible to HpaII cleavage indicating that these repeat units were completely methylated. In all of the DNAs examined, a significant fraction (10-25%) of the rDNA was cleaved at least once by HpaII into repeat unit length (9.1 kbp) fragments. The undermethylated HpaII sites mapped to the intergenic spacer (IGS) region of the rDNA. The major site of undermethylation was located in a region near the transcriptional start site. An EcoRI polymorphism, present in the 26S gene …
Landscape Changes On The Mescalero Apache Reservation: Eastern Apache Adaptation To Federal Indian Policy., Martha L. Henderson
Landscape Changes On The Mescalero Apache Reservation: Eastern Apache Adaptation To Federal Indian Policy., Martha L. Henderson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Eastern Apache, once a hunter and gatherer culture group of Native Americans, now reside as a tribe formally recognized by the United States government on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in south central New Mexico. Since Eastern Apache were assigned to the reservation by executive order in 1883, the group has adopted aspects of American culture while maintaining Eastern Apache landscape patterns. This dissertation examines Eastern Apache landscape patterns prior to and after reservation assignment with the use of geographical, historical, ethnographic, and economic data. While United States Indian policy has emphasized culture change, Eastern Apache landscape patterns of land …
A Field Method For Assessing Borehole Friction For Directional Well Casing, Eric E. Maidla, Andrew K. Wojtanowicz
A Field Method For Assessing Borehole Friction For Directional Well Casing, Eric E. Maidla, Andrew K. Wojtanowicz
Faculty Publications
A field procedure to evaluate the borehole friction factor between a pipe string and a borehole was developed. The primary concern of this research was to investigate and mathematically describe the drag associated with casing runs in directional wells through the use of the two-dimensional approach. The borehole friction factor was found, through an iterative procedure, by matching the calculated hook load to the measured one at the surface. The borehole friction factor was calculated as the unique value for the match. This study shows the necessary precision requirements for the hook load measurement instrumentation and presents three different types …

Studies On The Seasonal Biology, Influence Of Temperature On Immature Stages, And Damage To Field Corn By The Chinch Bug, Blissus Leucopterus Leucopterus (Say)., Jose Fermin Negron-Segarra
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Seasonal biology studies of the chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus leucopterus (Say), indicated movement out of overwintering sites in April in central Louisiana. Mass emergence appeared to be influenced by ambient temperatures of 26.7$\sp\circ$C or above. Overwintering populations attacked corn and wheat simultaneously and field invasions were predominantly by flight. Peak overwintering populations in Andropogon virginicus L. occurred in November and December. Overwintering populations decreased consistently beginning in January and culminated with spring emergence. Fall migrations back to overwintering sites began in September and peaked in October. Studies on the effect of temperature on the immature stages of this insect indicated …
The Genetic Variance-Covariance Structure Of The Louisiana Sugarcane Breeding Population., Scott Bradly Milligan
The Genetic Variance-Covariance Structure Of The Louisiana Sugarcane Breeding Population., Scott Bradly Milligan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Genetic variances estimates were obtained for ten traits of the Louisiana sugarcane breeding population. The variances and resulting statistics were derived from a population of three offspring each from 40 biparental crosses of 28 elite parents. The offspring and their parents were grown in replicated tests in five environments (year-location combinations). Narrow and broad-sense heritabilities, genetic correlations, genetic coefficients of variation and genetic gain estimates were estimated. To represent clonal populations in different stages of selection, the population was divided into three subpopulations: offspring, noncommercial parents and commercial parents. For each subpopulation, the genotype x environment (GE) variation was partitioned …

The Effects Of Fire On Forest Community Composition, Structure, And Pattern In Florida Sandhills., Alan John Rebertus
The Effects Of Fire On Forest Community Composition, Structure, And Pattern In Florida Sandhills., Alan John Rebertus
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The influence of fire on turkey oak (Quercus laevis Walt.) and sand live oak (Q. geminata Small) populations was examined in experimental fires in sandhills near Tampa. Turkey oak crown survival was positively related to oak dbh, distance to the nearest longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.), and dbh of the nearest pine. The pyrogenic litter of pines adversely affected survival of small turkey oaks within 10-20 m of the nearest pine, depending on fire severity. Resprouting of crown-killed turkey oaks was inversely related to oak dbh and, in one field, distance to the nearest pine. Poor resprouting away from pines …
Biochemical And Physiological Mechanisms Involved In Insecticide Toxicity And Host Plant Resistance To The Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens (Walker)., Randy Lynn Rose
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Permethrin, fenvalerate, methomyl, acephate and methyl parathion were bioassayed on larvae of the soybean looper, Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) and the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hubner) fed on susceptible (Bragg) versus resistant (PI 227687) soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., cultivars. Soybean loopers reared on resistant leaves were significantly more susceptible to acephate (2-fold) than when reared on susceptible leaves. Velvetbean caterpillars fed resistant leaves were more susceptible to both fenvalerate (1.5-fold) and acephate (1.6-fold) than when fed susceptible leaves. Differences in toxicity of other insecticides due to host plant were not observed. Midgut homogenates from last instar soybean loopers reared on …
Evolution Of The Igneous Activity In Southeastern Costa Rica And Southwestern Panama From The Middle Tertiary To The Recent., Amitava Roy
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Igneous rocks from southeastern Costa Rica and southwestern Panama, a Cenozoic magmatic arc, have been studied. Compositionally, the rocks span the range basalts through andesites to alkali basalts. The young andesites ($<$0.5 Ma) from Chiriqui, in Panama, and San Vito (1-2 Ma), in Costa Rica, have been studied in detail, and can be divided into low-K (high-Mg) and high-K andesites. Similar mineralogy is observed in both the suites, but the high-K andesites contain a higher proportion of hornblende. All the young andesites are characterized by high levels of large ion lithophile elements, such as Ba (550-1550 ppm) and Sr (1000-1900 ppm), and light rare earth elements, La (18-36 ppm). The high-Mg andesites have relatively lower levels of Ba and Sr, but high concentrations of compatible elements Cr (200-300 ppm) and Ni (80-130 ppm). The older rocks of the region are also characterized by high Ba and Sr. A suite of xenoliths, including hornblende gabbro, pyroxenite, and dunite, has been found on the western flank of Chiriqui. All of them have minor but conspicuous phlogopite high in Ba. The hornblende gabbros and the pyroxenite were cumulates from older andesite magmas, unrelated to the young andesites. The dunite came from the upper mantle. The high levels of Ba and Sr in many of these rocks are indicative of mantle metasomatism in the region. The origin of the young andesites can be explained by mixing of a mantle component which produces the Mid-Oceanic Ridge type of basalt and an incompatible element enriched fluid. Geochemistry and ages of the andesites and the older rocks suggest that metasomatism probably has taken place in the region since the Middle Miocene. The Panama Fracture Zone provided an uninterrupted pathway for the eruption of the young andesites. In contrast to most Central American orogenic basalts and andesites, these andesites were not affected by plagioclase fractionation; in addition, olivine fractionation did not occur from the high-Mg andesites.
The Time Course Of Acoustic/Phonemic Cue Integration In The Sensorineural Hearing-Impaired., Donald Joseph Schum
The Time Course Of Acoustic/Phonemic Cue Integration In The Sensorineural Hearing-Impaired., Donald Joseph Schum
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
It has been documented that phonemic featural information is differentially distributed across time in the speech waveform. It is also known that listeners with sensorineural hearing impairment often make errors on phoneme identification tasks. However, there is little documentation available that describes how the hearing-impaired listener uses the various sources of phonemic information which are distributed in the speech waveform. In this investigation, a group of normal hearing listeners and a group of sensorineural hearing-impaired listeners (with and without the benefit of amplification) identified various consonant and vowel productions that had been systematically varied in duration. The consonants (presented in …
Effect Of Cooperative Grouping On Stoichiometric Problem-Solving In High School Chemistry., Joy Bridges Tingle
Effect Of Cooperative Grouping On Stoichiometric Problem-Solving In High School Chemistry., Joy Bridges Tingle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A study of stoichiometric problem solving in chemistry was conducted in three high schools in a rural school district. Students (n = 178) in grades 10-12 solved problems individually or in a cooperative group using a prescriptive problem-solving strategy. This strategy consisted of a statement of the problem, redescription that included not only extraction of the stated and implied information but picture discription, prediction, mathematical solution, and check. The main purpose of the study was to determine empirically whether there was a difference in achievement between students solving problems individually and in cooperative groups. The cooperative groups were heterogeneously based …
Star Formation, Using Three-Dimensional Explicit Eulerian Hydrodynamics., Harold Alden Williams
Star Formation, Using Three-Dimensional Explicit Eulerian Hydrodynamics., Harold Alden Williams
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Evolutions of rapidly rotating, self-gravitating objects initially in axisymmetric equilibrium have been studied using a 3-D Newtonian hydrodynamic computer code with an eye toward understanding angular momentum transport in dynamically evolving protostars. First, a number of evolutions have been modeled using an existing explicit, Eulerian, finite difference code that is accurate to first-order in its spatial differences. The bar-mode dynamic instability has been explored by considering several models with different degrees of compressibility. This instability occurs in models having $\beta > \beta\sb{d} \equiv$ 0.27, where $\beta$ is the ratio of the rotational to the gravitational potential energy. A two-armed spiral, with …
The Army Air Corps Under Franklin D. Roosevelt: The Influence Of Air Power On The Roosevelt Administration, 1933-1941., Jeffery Scott Underwood
The Army Air Corps Under Franklin D. Roosevelt: The Influence Of Air Power On The Roosevelt Administration, 1933-1941., Jeffery Scott Underwood
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
When Franklin D. Roosevelt entered the White House in 1933, the leaders of the Army Air Corps wanted to create an independent air force. Using Billy Mitchell's tactics of public confrontation, exploitation of the Air Corps' poor condition and unproven claims about air power, these officers only antagonized the people who could grant them independence. After 1934, Oscar Westover, H. H. "Hap" Arnold, Frank Andrews, and a number of other Air Corps officers started a concerted effort to promote themselves as "team players" who had given up Mitchell's methods. With demonstrations, like long range flights to South America, they proved …
The Fire-Eaters, The South, And Secession. (Volumes I And Ii)., Eric Harry Walther
The Fire-Eaters, The South, And Secession. (Volumes I And Ii)., Eric Harry Walther
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study is a collective biography of nine prominent secessionists: Nathaniel Beverley Tucker, William Lowndes Yancey, John A. Quitman, Robert Barnwell Rhett, Laurence M. Keitt, Louis T. Wigfall, James D. B. DeBow, Edmund Ruffin, and William Porcher Miles. It explores both the variety of personalities drawn to the secession movement and what motivated them to advocate the creation of a Southern Confederacy. By examining individuals, each chapter dramatizes a particular aspect of southern radicalism. Although the chronological focus is on the secession crisis and the decade preceding the Civil War, the scope of this study includes the entire nineteenth century. …
Stein-Like Estimation And Inference., Lee Chester Adkins
Stein-Like Estimation And Inference., Lee Chester Adkins
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The dissertation addresses three issues in the use of Stein-like estimators of the classical normal linear regression model. The St. Louis equation is used to generate out-of-sample forecasts using least squares. These forecasts are compared to those produced by restricted least squares, pretest, and members of a general family of minimax shrinkage estimators using the root-mean-square error criterion. Bootstrap confidence intervals and ellipsoids are constructed which are centered at least squares and James-Stein estimators and their coverage probability and size is explored in a Monte Carlo experiment. A Stein-like estimator of the probit regression model is suggested and its quadratic …

Cell Division Studies Of Escherichia Coli: Expression And Protein Localization Of Cell Septation Gene, Ftsa., Chong Chon Younghae
Cell Division Studies Of Escherichia Coli: Expression And Protein Localization Of Cell Septation Gene, Ftsa., Chong Chon Younghae
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
FtsA is a gene essential for cell septation. It has been postulated to have both regulatory and structural functions. To study the structural involvement of the FtsA protein in septum formation, four FtsA-LacZ protein fusions were constructed using a mini-Mu transposon (MudII1734). When maxicells containing either ftsA-lacZ or ftsA specifying plasmids were radioactively labelled and fractionated, FtsA-LacZ fusion protein and FtsA were located in both the membrane and cytoplasmic fractions. The FtsA-LacZ fusion proteins were also located in dividing wild type dividing cells by measuring $\beta$-galactosidase activity. Cell envelope fractions from a sucrose equilibrium gradient had $\beta$-galactosidase activity in outer …

'You Are About To Begin Reading': The Nature And Function Of Second Person Point Of View In Narrative., Darlene Marie Hantzis
'You Are About To Begin Reading': The Nature And Function Of Second Person Point Of View In Narrative., Darlene Marie Hantzis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study asserts that second person point of view functions as a distinct category of point of view, which has been discounted by critical theorists. Second person point of view is defined in this study as a particular use of the second person pronoun. The "you" in second person point of view texts generates an alternating pattern of identification and displacement that constructs an intersubjectivity among narrative elements--narrator, actant, and narratee(s). Therefore, common uses of the "you" to refer only to the reader (narratee) of a text or to the actant in a text do not constitute second person point …
