Formation And Transformation Characteristics Of Magnetite (Iron(3)Oxygen(4)) Under Different Laboratory And Field Conditions., Seifollah Nasrazadani

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Formation and transformation characteristics of different kinds of magnetite were studied extensively in this work. Magnetites containing various amounts of cation deficiencies were characterized using magnetization data, lattice parameters, and Infrared Absorption Spectrophotometry. It is shown that $\alpha$-Fe$\sb2$O$\sb3$ nucleates in $\gamma$-Fe$\sb2$O$\sb3$ during the oxidation process of magnetite. Relative defect contents of several laboratory synthesized as well as field samples were obtained and correlated to their IR patterns. Stability criteria of magnetite formed under atmospheric conditions were probed into utilizing laboratory fog tests and it was concluded that in wet/dry cyclic testing continuous wetting or wetting in excess of 90% of …

Attributions Of Teachers And Students In Middle School Science Classrooms., Lennie Holomon Rhys Jan 1990

Attributions Of Teachers And Students In Middle School Science Classrooms., Lennie Holomon Rhys

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to examine: (a) teachers' notions about their students, (b) students' notions about themselves and learning, and (c) important factors that characterize, and possibly influence, these notions. The investigation was based on attribution theory, which proposes a framework for ascribing causes of a person's behavior, given that person's belief system. In this study, five notions, or attributions, were specified: attachment, concern, satisfied, indifferent, and rejection, and were expressed in three forms: oral, written, and behavioral. Subjects included three sixth-grade science teachers, three eighth-grade science teachers, and one science class from each teacher's schedule. For …

Assessing The Potential Impact Of Sugarcane Varieties And Predation On Diatraea Saccharalis (F.) Populations In Southern Louisiana., Ricardo Tomas Bessin Jan 1990

Assessing The Potential Impact Of Sugarcane Varieties And Predation On Diatraea Saccharalis (F.) Populations In Southern Louisiana., Ricardo Tomas Bessin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

To facilitate a better understanding of how varietal resistance and predation affect area-wide sugarcane borer populations, several studies were undertaken before the development of a simulation model. The first study was a 3-year investigation into the compatibility and contributions of varietal resistance, arthropod predation and insecticide toward sugarcane borer control. Insecticides were shown to be the predominant management factor preventing plant injury, but varietal resistance appeared nearly as important in terms of sugarcane borer population regulation in sugarcane. The next study assessed a moth production index in addition to the percentage of bored internodes as a tool for quantifying varietal …

I. Temporal Compression In Chirped Pulse Regenerative Amplification. Ii. Picosecond Time-Resolved Raman Study Of Excited State Charge Transfers., Yong Joon Chang Jan 1990

I. Temporal Compression In Chirped Pulse Regenerative Amplification. Ii. Picosecond Time-Resolved Raman Study Of Excited State Charge Transfers., Yong Joon Chang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The chirped pulse regenerative amplification in Nd:YAG lasers is demonstrated to be able to provide picosecond optical pulses with $\sim$gigawatt peak powers at a repetition rate of 2kHz. By taking advantage of the effects of gain narrowing and gain saturation in the regenerative amplifier, it is shown that the chirped amplified pulse width can be varied systematically from $\sim$12ps to 150ps. These high peak power pulses were utilized to perform several picosecond time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopic experiments. One study involves the investigation of excited state electron transfer in symmetric and asymmetric polypyridineruthenium(II) complexes. The competing influences of solvent relaxation, vibrational …

Stress Begins In Kindergarten: A Look At Behavior During Standardized Testing., Pamela Owen Fleege Jan 1990

Stress Begins In Kindergarten: A Look At Behavior During Standardized Testing., Pamela Owen Fleege

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Children's behavior during standardized achievement testing was explored through a qualitative study of two kindergarten classrooms. The subjects were 36 kindergarten children (10 Black, 26 white; 17 males, 19 females). Data were collected through observations in the classrooms; interviews with children, teachers, and principals; and video taping of the children before, during, and after standardized achievement testing. Findings indicated an increase in behaviors reported to be stress related during the testing situation and a decrease in those behaviors following the testing period. Other frequently observed behaviors included copying and calling out answers during the administration of the test. In addition, …

Evaluation Of Aeromonas Hydrophila Virulence Factors: Role In Natural Epizootics And Their Use As Potential Immunogens., Larisa Ann Ford Jan 1990

Evaluation Of Aeromonas Hydrophila Virulence Factors: Role In Natural Epizootics And Their Use As Potential Immunogens., Larisa Ann Ford

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Aeromonas hydrophila and A. sobria have been identified as major causes of mortalities among commercially raised channel catfish and are the cause of septicemic diseases in a wide variety of other animals. At present, antibiotic therapy is the only prescribed treatment for Motile Aeromonad Septicemia (HAS) in channel catfish. Antibiotic treatment, however, is expensive and often not effective due to the development of resistance in the bacterial strains. Development of immunoprophylatic methods for the prevention of HAS would be of value and use to the commercial catfish industry. Several studies have demonstrated that whole cell vaccine preparations do not confer …

A Functional Approach To Model Management., Lijen Ko Jan 1990

A Functional Approach To Model Management., Lijen Ko

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A model management system (MMS) is a computer-based system which facilitates the management of a wide range of decision support models (DSMs). It is a vital component of a decision support system which helps decision makers using data and DSMs in an integrated fashion. It is desirable that an MMS is knowledge-based, flexible, independent and reflecting users' view of a DSM. In addition, an MMS must manage DSMs at both the macro and micro levels. At the macro level, DSMs are described using descriptive attributes to supply users with general problem-solving capabilities. At the micro level, the components and mathematical …

Itchgrass Interference And Control In Sugarcane In Louisiana., Reed John Lencse Jan 1990

Itchgrass Interference And Control In Sugarcane In Louisiana., Reed John Lencse

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The spread of itchgrass (Rottboellia cochinchinensis (Lour.) Clayton) throughout the sugarcane (Saccharum interspecific hybrids) area is of growing concern to producers in Louisiana. At Maringouin and Thilbodaux, LA, season-long itchgrass interference reduced sugarcane stalk populations, cane yields, and sugar yields 34, 42, and 43%, respectively, compared to no itchgrass interference. Stalk populations and cane and sugar yields were comparable for early-season (from spring until layby on June 12) and season-long itchgrass interference with late-season (from layby on June 12 until harvest) being similar to no itchgrass interference. Good to excellent early-season itchgrass control was obtained with pendimethalin at 2.2 and …

Effects Of Rock/Cutter Friction On Pdc Bit Drilling Performance: An Experimental And Theoretical Study., Ergun Kuru Jan 1990

Effects Of Rock/Cutter Friction On Pdc Bit Drilling Performance: An Experimental And Theoretical Study., Ergun Kuru

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new mechanistic drilling model for PDC bits was derived from the balance of forces acting at the PDC cutter. The model combined the torque and the drilling rate equations, cutter's geometry and rock properties. A new understanding of frictionally generated heat between rock and PDC cutter is introduced. The numerical analysis revealed that neglecting the heat generated at the cutting surface area results in underestimation of the actual wearflat temperature by 10% to 530%, depending upon bit dull and downhole hydraulics. The example bit performance comparison made by calculating the MBP curves showed 18% reduction of drilling rate when …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Scientific-Romantic Synthesis In The Popular Scientific Writings Of Lewis Thomas., Donald Paul Lee Jan 1990

A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Scientific-Romantic Synthesis In The Popular Scientific Writings Of Lewis Thomas., Donald Paul Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As physician, educator, former medical administrator, and member of the National Academy of Sciences, Lewis Thomas has been one of the most eloquent spokespersons for the scientific community. This dissertation analyzes twenty-four of Thomas' popular scientific essays. These essays reveal a union of traditional scientific values and popular romantic themes, what is called here a rhetorical synthesis. The term synthesis is understood as the putting of two or more things together to form a whole, particularly suggesting a reconciliation of two philosophically opposing forces. Thomas' essays reflect a synthesis insofar as they merge what have traditionally been thought to be …

Determination Of Allelochemicals In The Environment Surrounding Ceratiola Ericoides., Elizabeth Douglas Jordan Jan 1990

Determination Of Allelochemicals In The Environment Surrounding Ceratiola Ericoides., Elizabeth Douglas Jordan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

As part of an investigation into the allelopathic interactions of members of the Florida scrub community of plants, the release of allelochemicals by the Florida wild rosemary, Ceratiola ericoides (Empetraceae) was monitored. Aqueous extracts of whole leaves, water-rinses of leaves, aqueous litter extracts, and aqueous soil extracts were monitored monthly, or twice monthly in the summer months, for the dihydrochalcone ceratiolin, its decomposition product hydrocinnamic acid, the microbial degradation product of hydrocinnamic acid, acetophenone, and trans-cinnamic acid. High performance liquid chromatography was used to quantify the four compounds. The amounts of ceratiolin, hydrocinnamic acid, acetophenone, and trans-cinnamic acid in the …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Growth, development and survival of pyrethroid-resistant (PY-R) and -susceptible (PY-S and FIELD-88) tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (F.), and bollworm (CORN-BW), Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), were compared on four cotton lines ('Deltapine 41', La. HG-660, La. HG-063 and PD-0804) and artificial diet. The FIELD-88 and CORN-BW strains had significantly higher 5 and 9 day larval weights compared to the PY-R and PY-S laboratory strains. Larvae fed squares of La. HG-660 and La. HG-063 had significantly lower larval and pupal weights, required significantly more days to pupate and had higher cumulative mortality compared to those reared on squares of a commercial cultivar, Deltapine …

Study Of Doubly Excited Ridge States Of Atoms., Quintin Ricardo Molina Jan 1990

Study Of Doubly Excited Ridge States Of Atoms., Quintin Ricardo Molina

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation on the structure and properties of doubly excited state of atoms, we are interested in states of atoms where two electrons are highly and comparably excited. Such states have been named doubly excited ridge states. Angular and radial correlations of two electrons in such states are of interest. First a semi-empirical study, based on available data, is carried out to test the validity of a pair quantum number descriptions in which a single six-dimensional Rydberg formula is proposed to organize sequences of doubly excited states as a function of energy. Next, we make a detailed analysis of …

Environmental And Economic Influences On The Oyster Fishery Of Lower Barataria Bay, Louisiana., Earl Joseph Melancon Jr Jan 1990

Environmental And Economic Influences On The Oyster Fishery Of Lower Barataria Bay, Louisiana., Earl Joseph Melancon Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A three year study, 1982-85, of eight oystermen bedding on 19 leases in lower Barataria Bay was designed to determine lease production, fuel, labor and energy inputs and the expenses to operate. The data was then incorporated into a bioeconomic model of the lower Bay. Commercial yield ratios (sacks harvested:sacks bedded) per lease ranged from 0.03$-$1.68:1. The two lowest lease yields were the result of vandalism and poaching, respectively. A multiple linear equation developed from the data predicts that as salinity and water temperature increase, lease yields decrease. Utilization of the Bay's bedding leases are dependent on seed obtained from …

Accretion And Canal Impacts In A Rapidly Subsiding Wetland Ii. Feldspar Marker Horizon Technique, Donald R. Cahoon, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Recent (6–12 month) marsh sediment accretion and accumulation rates were measured with feldspar marker horizons in the vicinity of natural waterways and man-made canals with spoil banks in the rapidly subsiding environment of coastal Louisiana. Annual accretion rates in aSpartina alterniflora salt marsh in the Mississippi deltaic plain averaged 6 mm in marsh adjacent to canals compared to 10 mm in marsh adjacent to natural waterways. The rates, however, were not statistically significantly different. The average rate of sediment accretion in the same salt marsh region for a transect perpendicular to a canal (13 mm yr−1) was significantly greater …

Epitope Mapping Of The Monoclonal Antibody Fac2 On The Apoprotein Of Cpa-1 In Photosystem Ii, Laurie K. Frankel, Terry M. Bricker Nov 1989

Epitope Mapping Of The Monoclonal Antibody Fac2 On The Apoprotein Of Cpa-1 In Photosystem Ii, Laurie K. Frankel, Terry M. Bricker

Faculty Publications

Using a combination of cyanogen bromide cleavage and endoproteinase digestion we have shown that the putative epitope for the monoclonal antibody FAC2 lies in the region 360Pro-391Ser on the apoprotein of CPa-1. This region lies entirely within the large extrinsic loop of this protein. We have shown previously that the epitope of FAC2 becomes exposed in oxygen-evolving membranes upon treatment with alkaline Tris which releases all four of the manganese associated with the oxygen-evolving site of photosystem II. The epitope is not exposed, however, after CaCl2 treatment and exposure to low concentrations of chloride, conditions which lead to the release …

Investigation Of Flow Patterns In Various Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Thomas Joseph Martin Jr Nov 1989

Investigation Of Flow Patterns In Various Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Thomas Joseph Martin Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The theoretical hydraulic retention time of wastewater treatment plants is often used to predict the efficiency of treatment and to calculate operational parameters. However, these values are related to the actual hydraulic retention time. When there is a large discrepancy between the actual and predicted values, the actual hydraulic retention time can be determined by marking a parcel of wastewater and recording its passage through the system. This investigation utilized rhodamine WT, a fluorescent dye, to track the movement of wastewater through a stabilization lagoon and a rock-reed filter. The loss of rhodamine WT to sorption, biodegradation and photodegradation was …

Canonical Commutator And Mass Renormalization, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell Nov 1989

Canonical Commutator And Mass Renormalization, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

The question considered is the effect on the canonical commutation rules of mass renormalization in quantum electrodynamics. This is investigated by considering the quantum Langevin equation for a charged quantum oscillator interacting with the radiation field via dipole interaction. Explicit expressions for the commutator are obtained for finite cutoff frequency as well as the large-cutoff limit. The surprising result obtained is that the exactly equal-time (canonical) commutator involves the bare mass, while the corresponding commutator for infinitesimally displaced times involves the renormalized mass. © 1989 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
