Biased Estimation In The Context Of The Hedonic Pricing Model For Housing., John Ross Knight Jan 1990

Biased Estimation In The Context Of The Hedonic Pricing Model For Housing., John Ross Knight

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation compares eight biased estimators as alternatives to Ordinary Least Squares estimation in the context of predicting residential real estate prices. It considers ridge rule estimation and principal components regressions, techniques that have previously been proposed for this application. It also introduces the use of Stein-like rules for predicting housing prices. The study examines relative performance of these estimators in three data settings and under four separate assumptions regarding loss criteria. The first test of the estimators uses Multiple Listing Service (MLS) data for Baton Rouge, Louisiana between 1984 and 1989 to examine relative predictive effectiveness in a time …

The Synthesis, Characterization, And Reactivities Of Metal Tetratertiaryphosphine Complexes., Scott Anthony Laneman Jan 1990

The Synthesis, Characterization, And Reactivities Of Metal Tetratertiaryphosphine Complexes., Scott Anthony Laneman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The synthesis of the binucleating tetratertiary phosphine ligand R$\sb2$PCH$\sb2$CH$\sb2$ (Ph)PCH$\sb2$P(Ph)CH$\sb2$CH$\sb2$PR$\sb2$ (R = Et, Ph), (LTTP), is described and several new bimetallic systems have been characterized. LTTP ligand design features include the combination of bis(phosphino)methane bridge with bis(phosphino)ethane chelating units. These merging functionalities can coordinate two transition metal centers and allow bimetallic reactivity from intramolecular interactions. eLTTP (R = Et) contains electron-rich alkyl-phosphines which also strongly coordinate and discourage fragmentation of the metal complex. Another class of tetratertiaryphosphines, where the central methylene groups is replaced by a central propylene (eLTTP-pr) and/or p-xylylene group (eLTTP-p-xyl), are synthesized and characterized along with three …

Measurement Of Positron-Electron Going To Baryon-Antibaryon Forward-Backward Charge Asymmetry., Jit Ning Lim Jan 1990

Measurement Of Positron-Electron Going To Baryon-Antibaryon Forward-Backward Charge Asymmetry., Jit Ning Lim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes the measurement of the forward-backward charge asymmetry, A$\sb{\rm b}$, for e$\sp{+}$e$\sp{-} \to$ bb at TRISTAN by the AMY detector. A measurement of the ratio, R$\sb{\rm b}$, of the cross section for e$\sp{+}$e$\sp{-} \to$ bb to the theoretical QED cross section for e$\sp{+}$e$\sp{-}\ \to\ \mu\sp{+}\mu\sp{-}$ is also obtained. A$\sb{\rm b}$ is an effect of the weak-electromagnetic interference. The measurement of A$\sb{\rm b}$ is therefore a direct test of the standard model electroweak theory. TRISTAN is the only e$\sp{+}$e$\sp{-}$ collider in the world to explore the center-of-mass energy region of 50 GeV to 62 GeV, where the effects of …

Molecular Dynamics Of Solutions Containing Water-Soluble Semiflexible Polymer., Mazidah Binti Mustafa Jan 1990

Molecular Dynamics Of Solutions Containing Water-Soluble Semiflexible Polymer., Mazidah Binti Mustafa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The solution behavior of hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) was investigated in detail via molecular probe diffusion. The diffusivities of two very different probes, polystyrene latex spheres and sodium fluorescein dye, in aqueous solutions of HPC of three different molecular weights were measured by quasielastic light scattering (QELS) for latex probes and fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR) for dye probes. In aqueous HPC, the latex spheres have a tendency to form clusters by adsorption of HPC and bridging of the latex spheres. The microviscosities calculated from the Stokes-Einstein relationship using the bare spheres radii exceeded the measured shear viscosities from cone and plate and …

An Exploration Of The "Paradoxical" View Of Coupling Structure And School Effectiveness., Connie Stokes Logan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to utilize the organizational perspective of coupling to extend our understanding of effective schools as complex social systems. Part One of the study focused on the continued development and refinement of the Organizational Coupling Structure Inventory-Teacher Form (OCSI-T) to measure coupling structure in schools (Logan & Ellett, 1989). Part Two of the study focused on the examination of key research questions that bear on understanding the coupling construct and school effectiveness. The findings from Part One of the study support the OCSI-T as a reasonably valid and reliable inventory for measuring five dimensions of …

The Introduction Of A Gene Encoding A Novel Peptide Into Plants To Increase Plant Bacterial Resistance., Pablito Garcia Nagpala Jan 1990

The Introduction Of A Gene Encoding A Novel Peptide Into Plants To Increase Plant Bacterial Resistance., Pablito Garcia Nagpala

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A 38 amino acid long peptide, Shiva-1, was designed and chemically synthesized in our laboratory. Shiva-1 has only 46% amino acid homology with the naturally occurring lytic peptide from Hyalophora cecropia, known as Cecropin B. However, hydrophobic properties and charge density of the natural molecule were conserved at 100% in the synthetic peptide. This novel peptide was shown to be capable of killing a number of different species of plant pathogenic bacteria at nanomolar concentrations. Comparative studies show that Shiva-1 is more effective in this bacteriolytic activity than Cecropin B. The gene for Shiva-1 was chemically synthesized and cloned into …

Discharge-Suspended Sediment Relationships In The Mississippi-Atchafalaya Rivers System, Louisiana., Joann Mossa Jan 1990

Discharge-Suspended Sediment Relationships In The Mississippi-Atchafalaya Rivers System, Louisiana., Joann Mossa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although suspension is the dominant mode of material transport in rivers world-wide, concepts of suspended sediment transport have come mostly from studies of small rivers. This study describes relationships between discharge and suspended sediment in a large river system, the Mississippi-Atchafalaya in south Louisiana. The primary objectives are: (1) to determine whether the suspended silt-clay and sand follow different relationships with discharge because the silt-clay is supplied largely from the basin whereas the sand is supplied largely from the channel perimeter; and (2) to determine whether hysteresis effects differ in high as compared to low discharge years because of conditions …

Narrative And Everyday Experience: Performance Process In The Storytelling Of The Swiss Volhynian Mennonites. (Volumes I And Ii)., John Elmer Mccabe-Juhnke Jan 1990

Narrative And Everyday Experience: Performance Process In The Storytelling Of The Swiss Volhynian Mennonites. (Volumes I And Ii)., John Elmer Mccabe-Juhnke

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines oral narrative performance within the cultural context of the Swiss Volhynian Mennonites in Moundridge, Kansas, whose forebears were members of a congregational group that migrated from the Russian Province of Volhynia in 1874. These immigrants strove to maintain Gemeinde--a mutually supportive community of believers separated from the world. A Swiss Volhynian Mennonite himself, the author tape-recorded interviews with second and third generation descendants of the Russian immigrants. Using the interview transcriptions and personal observation in the Moundridge community as primary data, the author demonstrates how the formative elements of everyday narrative performance both sustain and are shaped …

Designing Efficient Algorithms For Distributed Systems., Mohan B. Sharma

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Search for efficient algorithms for distributed systems has become an important area of computer science. This research is driven by the need to efficiently process and communicate information generated by the system. In distributed systems, topological information plays an important role in the design of fast algorithms for problems such as routing, broadcasting, and sorting. The central focus of this dissertation is the design and analysis of distributed algorithms for determining topological information in asynchronous communication networks. Specifically, we present distributed algorithms for two generic problems: distributed graph problems and network traversal problems. Network location and network recognition are two …

Theoretical Description Of Doubly Excited States Of Molecular Hydrogen., Byungduk Yoo Jan 1990

Theoretical Description Of Doubly Excited States Of Molecular Hydrogen., Byungduk Yoo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study focusses on presenting a global picture to theoretically describe the singly- and doubly-excited states of molecular hydrogen. The non-iterative eigenchannel R-matrix method and multichannel quantum defect theory have been combined for understanding the physics of the wide range of energy and internuclear distances in a unified manner. In this dissertation ab initio calculations for $\sp{1}\Sigma\sb{g}$, $\sp3\Sigma\sb{g}$, $\sp1\Sigma\sb{u}$ and $\sp3\Sigma\sb{u}$ symmetries of hydrogen molecule are performed to test the present approach. The body-frame quantum defects are expected to be mild on energy, but found to be strongly dependent on both energy and internuclear distances in this problem. The …

Ecology Of Small Insectivorous Birds In A Bottomland Hardwood Forest., Wylie Clark Barrow Jr Jan 1990

Ecology Of Small Insectivorous Birds In A Bottomland Hardwood Forest., Wylie Clark Barrow Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Changes in species composition and abundance, habitat use patterns and foraging behavior of 19 bird species in a bottomland hardwood forest in Louisiana were studied during the 1984-1989 breeding seasons. Species that used only one macrohabitat included the Yellow-throated Warbler along oxbow lake margins and the American Redstart, Swainson's Warbler, and Hooded Warbler in non-flooded oak-gum-elm forest. The Northern Parula and Kentucky Warbler used 2 macrohabitats--non-flooded forest and oxbow lake margins. Thirteen species used 3 macrohabitats (non-flooded forest, seasonally flooded forest, and oxbow lake margins). I distinguished 6 groups of species that used similar microhabitat and foraging behavior. Ecological partitioning …

Quantitative Ftir Analysis Of Gas Phase Cigarette Smoke., Rafael Cueto Jan 1990

Quantitative Ftir Analysis Of Gas Phase Cigarette Smoke., Rafael Cueto

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new method, using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), was developed for the simultaneous determination of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide in gas phase cigarette smoke and in model systems. The FTIR method also allows the simultaneous determination of other components. The method uses multivariate least-squares regression analysis, that allows simultaneous quantitation of several components even in the presence of overlapping peaks, and fast data acquisition for kinetic analysis. For the preparation of the gas mixtures an apparatus that uses mass flow controllers, check-valves, and ground glass joints was constructed. This apparatus gives very exact metering, allowing the preparation of …

The study propositions were supported by the data. The participants of the study included new graduates and experienced nurses. The institutions involved and their orientation programs were perceived in a positive manner by the participants. Orientation instructors were perceived …

The Role Of Sonority In Jargonaphasia., Sarah Slack Christman Jan 1990

The Role Of Sonority In Jargonaphasia., Sarah Slack Christman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Sonority Sequencing Principle suggests that the relative sonority rank among sounds can explain intrasyllabic and transsyllabic phoneme ordering patterns in normal speakers. The values of segments can be ranked from most to least sonority as follows: Vowels, Glides, Liquids, Nasals and Obstruents. The unmarked order of segments within an initial demisyllable is O-N-L-G from the periphery toward the peak, and G-L-N-O in a final demisyllable from the peak toward the periphery. The sonority "slope" of an initial demisyllable will be steep to maximize the perceptual saliency of syllable onset. In a final demisyllable, especially if embedded, the slope will …

The Mechanism Of Low Levels Of Nitrogen Dioxide Reaction With Unsaturated Fatty Acid Esters., Aris Ann Gallon Jan 1990

The Mechanism Of Low Levels Of Nitrogen Dioxide Reaction With Unsaturated Fatty Acid Esters., Aris Ann Gallon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nitrogen Dioxide is a toxic air pollutant that exists at less than 0.5 ppm in the atmosphere. This toxic compound is known to initiate autoxidation of unsaturated fatty acids both in vivo and in vitro. When autoxidation occurs in vivo, membrane damage that can lead to cell death can occur. Low concentrations of nitrogen dioxide were shown to react with the polyunsaturated fatty acid esters, methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate, by a H-abstraction mechanism. However, methyl oleate, an unsaturated fatty acid ester, was demonstrated to react with a low concentration of nitrogen dioxide by only an addition mechanism. Although methyl …

The Relationship Between Family Communication And Psychosocial Adjustment Of Cancer Patients., James Micheal Gotcher Jan 1990

The Relationship Between Family Communication And Psychosocial Adjustment Of Cancer Patients., James Micheal Gotcher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between patient-family communication and psychosocial adjustment to cancer. Cancer patients receiving radiation therapy (n = 105) were interviewed using a semi-structured format. The majority of female subjects were being treated for breast cancer and the majority of male subjects for prostate cancer. Questionnaires assessing psychosocial adjustment and patient-family communication were employed. Psychosocial adjustment was tapped by means of the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS). The PAIS provides a global adjustment score and taps seven independent domains of adjustment: health care orientation, vocational environment, domestic environment, sexual relations, extended family …

Computational Neural Learning Formalisms For Perceptual Manipulation: Singularity Interaction Dynamics Model., Sandeep Gulati Jan 1990

Computational Neural Learning Formalisms For Perceptual Manipulation: Singularity Interaction Dynamics Model., Sandeep Gulati

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses a fundamental problem in computational AI--developing a class of massively parallel, neural algorithms for learning robustly, and in real-time, complex nonlinear transformations from representative exemplars. Provision of such a capability is at the core of many real-life problems in robotics, signal processing and control. The concepts of terminal attractors in dynamical systems theory and adjoint operators in nonlinear sensitivity theory are exploited to provide a firm mathematical foundation for learning such mappings with dynamical neural networks, while achieving a dramatic reduction in the overall computational costs. Further, we derive an efficient methodology for handling a multiplicity of …

Transition-Structure Recognition In Polyether-Catalyzed Ester Aminolysis Carried Out In Nonpolar Media., John Charles Hogan Jan 1990

Transition-Structure Recognition In Polyether-Catalyzed Ester Aminolysis Carried Out In Nonpolar Media., John Charles Hogan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism of aminolysis of aryl acetates carried out in chlorobenzene involves rate-determining breakdown of the tetrahedral adduct formed by the nucleophilic attack of an amine on the carbonyl carbon of an aryl acetate ester. The breakdown of this tetrahedral adduct is assisted by the intervention of either a second amine moiety or a weakly basic catalyst moiety. The second amine or catalyst hydrogen bonds to an ammonium hydrogen of the zwitterionic tetrahedral adduct, which stabilizes this adduct by dispersing the positive charge on its cationic (ammonium) portion. Stabilization of the adduct occurs at the expense of a weaker 1,3-dipolar-stabilizing …

A Geographical Perspective On United States Capital Punishment, 1801-1960., Eliza Husband Jan 1990

A Geographical Perspective On United States Capital Punishment, 1801-1960., Eliza Husband

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Geographical anomalies in American capital punishment are a key to interpreting this social practice. A nationwide change occurred after the 1830s from public execution to sequestered penitentiary execution. A regional contrast began developing during the same period that has lasted until now, with some states holding 20 or more executions annually, while others abolished the death penalty 75-125 years ago. The United States furnishes historical geographical conditions for persistence of capital punishment whose aftereffects are unlikely to be overcome. Popular support for the death penalty is efficacious in a democratized, decentralized decision-making process. Popular support has been particularly strong when …

Semilunar Spawning In Killifish, Fundulus Grandis., Shyh-Min Hsiao Jan 1990

Semilunar Spawning In Killifish, Fundulus Grandis., Shyh-Min Hsiao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, spawned daily in aquaria exposed to 12-hr daylengths and 21 to 28$\sp\circ$C temperatures. The number of eggs spawned varied daily producing a peak about every 13.7 days. Ovarian studies indicate that increased maturation of peripheral germinal-vesicle oocytes in preparation for spawning begins five days before the semilunar spawning peak. There is an increase in numbers of hydrated oocytes and ovulated eggs reaching a maximum on or a day before peak spawning. Semilunar spawning cycles of F. grandis are expressions of an endogenous rhythm. Although a specific phase of the semilunar cycle is maintained with respect to …

Fission Track Thermochronology: Methods And Applications In Tectonics., Steven Matthew Jones Jan 1990

Fission Track Thermochronology: Methods And Applications In Tectonics., Steven Matthew Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Time, temperature and the kinetics of reactions are the basic ingredients in this study of thermal history analysis. Unraveling the timing of geological events using absolute dating systems based on radioactive decay is not a trivial task, ages given by most radiometric dating techniques (e.g. fission track analysis) are apparent ages, related to cooling through some characteristic temperature range. Fission tracks are atomic-scale defects in a crystal caused by the passage of fragments from the fission of uranium-238. In apatite, fission tracks are destroyed by annealing at temperatures between $\sim$70$\sp\circ$C and $\sim$125$\sp\circ$C. A quantitative understanding of the kinetics of track …

Small Sample Properties Of Estimators And Test Statistics In Nonlinear Regression: The Box-Cox Transformation., Minbo Kim Jan 1990

Small Sample Properties Of Estimators And Test Statistics In Nonlinear Regression: The Box-Cox Transformation., Minbo Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The dissertation will address small sample properties of estimators and test statistics in a nonlinear regression model. The Box-Cox transformation is attractive to economists because a family of functional forms can be compared simultaneously within the framework of classical statistical inference. Usually, maximum likelihood (ML) methods are used to estimate the Box-Cox model. In the present study, nonlinear two stage and iterative generalized least squares (IGLS) method are considered. The accuracy of probability statements concerning nonlinear models is often questionable in small samples. Therefore, the finite sample distribution of the asymptotic t-statistic in the Box-Cox model is derived using an …

Chromatographic Peak Shape Analysis And Modeling., Mark Stephen Jeansonne Jan 1990

Chromatographic Peak Shape Analysis And Modeling., Mark Stephen Jeansonne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Various aspects of chromatographic peak quantitation and shape characterization are investigated in detail for single and overlapping chromatographic peaks. From the viewpoint of providing better quantitation of real chromatographic data while minimizing computational complexity, the results presented should be easily incorporated into existing routine chromatographic data analysis regimes. Three topics applicable to modern chromatographic data analysis are considered. First, progress in the application of the exponentially modified Gaussian (EMG) function to chromatography is reviewed. The review covers the following areas: (1) equations derived from the model, (2) studies of inherent errors in the quantitation of chromatographic peaks via use of …

The Design And Expression Of A Synthetic Gene Encoding A Novel Polypeptide To Enhance The Quality Of Plant Protein., Jaeho Kim Jan 1990

The Design And Expression Of A Synthetic Gene Encoding A Novel Polypeptide To Enhance The Quality Of Plant Protein., Jaeho Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A novel protein (HEAAE II, High Essential Amino Acid Encoding Protein), rich in essential amino acids (75% of total), was designed and constructed in our laboratory. The monomeric form of the protein consists of 20 amino acid residues with four additional amino acids comprising a potential $\beta$-turn. Circular dichroism and size exclusion analysis demonstrated, that the monomer exists in a stable $\alpha$-helical conformation that self-aggregates in aqueous solution to form higher ordered multimeric structures, which are very reminiscent of natural plant storage proteins. The DNA encoding this amino acid sequence was synthesized, and from this monomeric gene fragment, the tetrameric …

Usage-Dependent Information Systems Design., Jin-Soo Kim Jan 1990

Usage-Dependent Information Systems Design., Jin-Soo Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Usage-dependent phenomenon has been commonly observed in computer information systems (CIS). Since the performance of CIS greatly depends on the phenomenon, how to model it is an important CIS design issue. A usage process model (the Simon-Yule model) for modeling the usage--dependent phenomenon is proposed. The model is modified and successfully applied to the performance evaluation of self-organizing linear search heuristics. Analytical and empirical results indicate that the model provides a realistic performance evaluation of the heuristics and presents a solution to the research open problems which have been unsolved for more than two decades. Furthermore, the results lead to …

Evaluation Of The Crawfish Chitin-Carotenoid Complex And Its Nutritional/Pigmentation Effect In Poultry Diets., Keun Soo Lee Jan 1990

Evaluation Of The Crawfish Chitin-Carotenoid Complex And Its Nutritional/Pigmentation Effect In Poultry Diets., Keun Soo Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present investigation involved utilization of the chitin-carotenoid complex and the whole meal derived from crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) composite byproduct, in controlled broiler diets to determine the biological value of these substrates as potential sources of growth promoters, red intensifying agents, and protein supplements. Included are basic studies of the unique characteristics of the chitin-protein and chitin-carotenoid complexes. The crawfish chitin-carotenoid substrate did not exhibit any deleterious effects on broiler growth performance in terms of animal weight gain and feed efficiency at levels up to 5% of the total diet. Controlled chitin addition to the diet indicated no apparent relationship …

Transgressions And Regressions In The Barataria Bight Region Of Coastal Louisiana. (Volumes I And Ii)., Douglas Ross Levin Jan 1990

Transgressions And Regressions In The Barataria Bight Region Of Coastal Louisiana. (Volumes I And Ii)., Douglas Ross Levin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

At least three delta progradations have contributed to the Barataria geologic framework since 5000 ybp. The Bayou des Families lobe was first (4600 to 3600 ybp) followed by Bayou Blue (2600 and 1900 ybp) and then the Mississippi lobe (1000 ybp to the present). A flooding surface separates the (lower) Bayou des Families from the Bayou Blue progradation (above). The shoreface of the Bayou des Families transgression lies seaward of the present Barataria shoreline. This transgression lasted approximately one thousand years. A flooding surface also separates the Bayou Blue progradation from the Mississippi Delta lobe. This (Bayou Blue) transgression lasted …

Low-Temperature Oxidation Of Silicon Using Point-To-Plane Corona Discharge., Mohammad Reza Madani Jan 1990
