The Position Of Isleño In Hispanic Dialectology, Lynn Ellen Pearson Jul 1992

The Position Of Isleño In Hispanic Dialectology, Lynn Ellen Pearson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This is a study on Isleño, a vestigial variant of Spanish spoken in Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana by the descendants of Canary Islanders who settled in Louisiana during the 1780's. The goal of this research is to determine the position of Isleño in Hispanic dialectology. Previous researchers have made conflicting claims about the origins of Isleño's linguistic features, e.g. on one hand that Isleño is primarily composed of Canary Island Spanish antecedents, or on the other hand that documented contacts between the Isleños and speakers of other non-Canarian Spanish varieties have influenced Isleño's linguistic make-up. These claims are tested using …

Multiplication, Division, And Shift Instructions In Parallel Random Access Machines, Jerry L. Trahan, Michael C. Loui, Vijaya Ramachandran Jun 1992

Multiplication, Division, And Shift Instructions In Parallel Random Access Machines, Jerry L. Trahan, Michael C. Loui, Vijaya Ramachandran

Faculty Publications

We prove that polynomial time on a parallel random access machine (PRAM) with unit-cost multiplication and division or on a PRAM with unit-cost shifts is equivalent to polynomial space on a Turing machine (PSPACE). This extends the result that polynomial time on a basic PRAM is equivalent to PSPACE to hold when the PRAM is allowed multiplication or division or unrestricted shifts. It also extends to the PRAM the results that polynomial time on a random access machine (RAM) with multiplication is equivalent to PSPACE and that polynomial time on a RAM with shifts (that is, a vector machine) is …

Solid-State Nmr Studies Of Organometallic Complexes, Ae Ja Kim May 1992

Solid-State Nmr Studies Of Organometallic Complexes, Ae Ja Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy has been used to obtain information about electronic structure and molecular geometry for some organometallic complexes. The principal elements of the 13C chemical shielding tensor for a dimetallocyclopropane unit and three square-planar metal cyanides have been determined from a nonlinear least squares fit of the chemical shift powder pattern. For the dimetallocyclopropane unit, the orientation of the chemical shielding tensor with respect to the molecular axis has been assigned based on the dipolar coupling tensor. The principal elements of the 13P chemical shielding tensor for three binuclear platinum diphosphite complexes have been obtained from a …

The Unbearable Heaviness Of Politics: Milan Kundera On Aesthetics, Being And Political Consciousness, Sidney S. Fazio May 1992

The Unbearable Heaviness Of Politics: Milan Kundera On Aesthetics, Being And Political Consciousness, Sidney S. Fazio

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The work of Czech novelist Milan Kundera provides some interesting philosophical and aesthetic reflections upon the nature of human existence. Kundera strives to make concrete discoveries about human experiences through his novels. The role of the novel in revealing concrete existence presents one with a unique means to ponder political questions. Kundera's aesthetic and political philosophy arises from his distinct world view and aesthetic theory, based on three overarching premises, which insist that the most important goals for a novelist (or anyone) are: to make discoveries about existence; to ask questions without offering answers; and to express the fundamental ambiguity …

Nietzsche And Heraclitus, Virginia Lyle Jennings Howard Apr 1992

Nietzsche And Heraclitus, Virginia Lyle Jennings Howard

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Nietzshe's philosophical ideas are closely based upon his early studies of Greek thought. Unless his philosophy is approached from the standpoint of its foundation in the ancient Greeks, Heraclitus in particular, then it can be difficult to gain a coherent picture of Nietzsche's thought. In Heraclitus he found an affirmation of precisely what he loved about the ancient Greek way of life, its most fundamental concept: the contest. The Greeks embrace their apparently terrible characteristics and control them with a rule-governed contest. In the same way Heraclitus's universe consists of opposites which strive for dominion, not through wars of annihilation, …

A Qualitative Evaluation Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Issues Programming Process Using Focus Group Interviews., Fred Eugene Baker Jan 1992

A Qualitative Evaluation Of The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Issues Programming Process Using Focus Group Interviews., Fred Eugene Baker

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Evaluating programs is a necessary and vital function in the management of all organizations. In 1988, the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) began an intensive statewide process entitled "Issues Programming". This is a qualitative evaluation of that process. The study focused on the perceptions of extension agents and community leaders who participated in the process. Four focus group interviews were conducted, two each for agents and leaders. Geographic site selection provided for participant inclusion from all LCES administrative areas. The groups were asked a series of open ended questions designed to draw from them in-depth perceptions about the process in …

The Relation Between Stress And Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus: Physiologic Arousal Or Disruption Of Compliance?, Virginia Diane Garrett Jan 1992

The Relation Between Stress And Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus: Physiologic Arousal Or Disruption Of Compliance?, Virginia Diane Garrett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relations between minor life events, compliance, urinary free cortisol, and blood glucose in 40 adults with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus was examined. Specifically, this study explored whether naturally-occurring minor stressful events had disruptive effects on metabolic control through: (a) an arousal mechanism mediated by cortisol, (b) disruption of the individual's adherence to prescribed treatment, (c) a combination of arousal and disruption of compliance, or (d) a third, unspecified mechanism. Stress did not influence metabolic control, either independently or via a stress-compliance or stress-arousal mechanism although stress was related to cortisol activity. Neither the direct effects of cortisol nor a cortisol …

The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan Jan 1992

The Effects Of Organoclay Adsorption On The Solidification Of Organic Wastes., Adam Faschan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effects of organoclay adsorption on the leaching performance of solidified organic wastes was researched. Adsorption isotherms were developed for the adsorption of 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB), nitrobenzene (NB), and phenol by five different organoclays. Simulated liquid wastes containing DCB, NB, and phenol were solidified utilizing various combinations of Type I Portland cement and the five organoclays. The ratio of cement/clay utilized in each solidification matrix varied from 3/2 to 13/2. Linear and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models were utilized to predict the leaching performance of samples cured for 7, 28, and 90 days. The ratio of the actual leachate concentrations compared to …

The Rhetoric Of Science: A Case Study Of The Cold Fusion Controversy., David Lee Hatfield Jan 1992

The Rhetoric Of Science: A Case Study Of The Cold Fusion Controversy., David Lee Hatfield

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the circumstances surrounding and the rhetoric involved in the cold fusion controversy begun on March 23, 1989, when two University of Utah electrochemists, Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons, announced by press conference the discovery of room-temperature nuclear fusion. The dissertation seeks to determine to what extent a rhetorical analysis of cold fusion discourse may increase understanding of the controversy; the success of Fleischmann and Pons as scientific rhetors; the ways in which scientists' attitudes, values, and assumptions manifest themselves in the discourse; and finally, what may be learned about scientific discourse in general by examining the cold …
